1st Sunday of Advent
Today’s Gospel describes the beginning of Jesus’ public ministry. In the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, and Luke (called the Synoptic Gospels), Jesus’ public ministry begins after his baptism by John the Baptist and after his retreat to the desert where he was tempted by the devil. When Jesus returns from the desert, he hears that John has been arrested.
The first part of today’s Gospel places Jesus’ ministry in the context of the writings of the prophet, Isaiah. Matthew wants to show that Jesus is the fulfillment of the prophecies given to the people of Israel, and he refers to Isaiah to do so. Isaiah says that the Messiah will begin his ministry in Galilee, the land of the Gentiles. When Jesus begins to preach in Galilee, Matthew points to his ministry as a fulfillment of Isaiah’s prophecy, proof that Jesus is the Messiah.
When Jesus called his first disciples, the Gospel tells us that the fishermen (Peter and Andrew, James and John) dropped everything to follow Jesus immediately. Yet this Gospel tells us little about the prior experience that the fishermen had of Jesus. Did they know him? Had they heard him preach? What kind of person must Jesus have been to invoke such a response? We can imagine that Jesus was a powerful presence to elicit a response as immediate and complete as these first disciples gave.
The Gospel concludes with a description of the ministry that Jesus begins in Galilee. Jesus inaugurates the Kingdom of God with his work. He teaches in the synagogue and preaches the kingdom. His ability to cure people’s diseases and illness is a sign of the kingdom. In Jesus’ ministry, we already begin to see the Kingdom of God among us.

Can you play the piano, guitar or organ? Other instruments are also welcome! The keyboard accompaniment for our music resources needs either a grade 5 or 6 proficiency. Playing for Mass does require special skills and experience. This will include acknowledging the music ministry as having a servant-leadership role in the parish, knowing the liturgical cues, being able to accompany singers and improvise, and eventually knowing the musical, liturgical and pastoral judgement needed to select music for various celebrations. You will receive good mentoring! You can join an existing group or choir and apprentice with them, or you can be part of some new groups and choirs that are being formed. 1. What does the word “Epiphany” mean?
“Epiphany” means “manifestation”. It comes from Greek roots that mean “to show, to display” (phainein) and “on, to” (epi-).
3. When is Epiphany celebrated?
The Epiphany shows that “the full number of the nations” now takes its “place in the family of the patriarchs”, and acquires Israelitica dignitas (is made “worthy of the heritage of Israel”) CCC 528.

2. What is the feast of the Epiphany about?
According to the Catechism of the Catholic Church the Epiphany is the manifestation of Jesus as Messiah of Israel, Son of God and Saviour of the world. The great feast of Epiphany celebrates the adoration of Jesus by the wise men (magi) from the East, together with His baptism in the Jordan and the wedding feast at Cana in Galilee.
In some countries, Epiphany is a holy day of obligation. Where that is the case, it is celebrated on January 6th. In the United States and Canada, Epiphany is not a holy day of obligation, and its celebration is transferred to the first Sunday after January 1st.

Singers are needed for new music ministry groups in our parish. Three musicians – an organist and two pianists – have responded to our urgent need for music ministry. Now we need singers to join them!
The requirements for being a singer at Masses in our parish are:
- An attitude of service (not performance) reverence and the ability to work as part of a group.
- A regular commitment of time - for practice and for your group’s ministry schedule.
- The ability to carry a tune – you don’t have to have a trained voice, be able to read musical notation, or harmonize, although those abilities are a great help – but you do need to be able to sing on key and have a voice that can blend with others.
If you do have a trained voice, if you sang in a school or church choir when you were young, if you have ever thought about being part of the music ministry at Mass, or if you appreciate the importance of musical leadership for public worship and believe that those who sing pray twice, please become part of one of the three new music ministry groups or choirs we are now forming in our parish!
- The Archdiocesan requirements for all parish volunteers – the attendance to the Called to Protect 2.5 hour workshop and completing some forms (application, covenant of care) will be needed.

The Jessica Martel Memorial Foundation is finalizing construction on Jessie’s House, with plans to open on April 1st, 2020. This facility will offer a shelter from domestic violence to individuals and families within the Sturgeon Region, Alexander First Nation, Edmonton Garrison and the City of St. Albert. Hoping to offer the comfort of a quilt to each client, the Foundation is looking for donations. If you are a quilter, please consider donating a quilt to Jessie’s House.

The month of May is here, a time when the People of God express with particular intensity their love and devotion for the Blessed Virgin Mary. It is traditional in this month to pray the Rosary at home within the family. The restrictions of the pandemic have made us come to appreciate all the more this “family” aspect, also from a spiritual point of view.

Dear Brothers and Sisters,
For this reason, I want to encourage everyone to rediscover the beauty of praying the Rosary at home in the month of May. This can be done either as a group or individually; you can decide according to your own situations, making the most of both opportunities. The key to doing this is always simplicity, and it is easy also on the internet to find good models of prayers to follow.
I am also providing two prayers to Our Lady that you can recite at the end of the Rosary, and that I myself will pray in the month of May, in spiritual union with all of you. I include them with this letter so that they are available to everyone.
Dear brothers and sisters, contemplating the face of Christ with the heart of Mary our Mother will make us even more united as a spiritual family and will help us overcome this time of trial. PRAYER SHAWLS
Members of the same family often bear close resemblances to one another. Sometimes physical resemblances are shared within a family, but often the similarities are behavioral characteristics and mannerisms. We hear this observation affirmed through a number of common phrases: “He’s a chip off the old block” or “She’s her mother’s daughter.” Today’s Gospel points to a mystery of faith that might be examined in light of these familial relationships. In Jesus we see and know the Father. Likewise, the Father is known through the life and work of the Son, Jesus.
Talk together as a family about whether people outside of your family recognize common traits of your family. Are there physical resemblances that people recognize and so know each individual as a member of your family? Are there mannerisms that are shared by members of your family? What are some common interests and work that people might associate with your family? As you read today’s Gospel, John 14:1-12, keep in mind that members of the same family share many characteristics, even though each person in the family is an individual. What does Jesus tell His disciples about His relationship with the Father? The relationship between the Father and Jesus is so close that Jesus says that those who have seen and known Jesus have also seen and known the Father. Jesus promises His disciples that because of their faith in Him and in the Father, they too will be able to do the work of the Father as Jesus did. End your discussion by praying together that others will recognize in your family the work of the Father. Pray together the Lord’s Prayer.

Can you play the piano, guitar or organ? Other instruments are also welcome! The keyboard accompaniment for our music resources needs either a grade 5 or 6 proficiency. Playing for Mass does require special skills and experience. This will include acknowledging the music ministry as having a servant-leadership role in the parish, knowing the liturgical cues, being able to accompany singers and improvise, and eventually knowing the musical, liturgical and pastoral judgement needed to select music for various celebrations. You will receive good mentoring! You can join an existing group or choir and apprentice with them, or you can be part of some new groups and choirs that are being formed. The requirements for being a singer at Masses in our parish are:
- An attitude of service (not performance) reverence and the ability to work as part of a group.
- The ability to carry a tune – you don’t have to have a trained voice, be able to read musical notation, or harmonize, although those abilities are a great help – but you do need to be able to sing on key and have a voice that can blend with others.
- The Archdiocesan requirements for all parish volunteers – the attendance to the Called to Protect 2.5 hour workshop and completing some forms (application, covenant of care) will be needed.
If you do have a trained voice, if you sang in a school or church choir when you were young, if you have ever thought about being part of the music ministry at Mass, or if you appreciate the importance of musical leadership for public worship and believe that those who sing pray twice, please become part of one of the three new music ministry groups or choirs we are now forming in our parish!
- A regular commitment of time - for practice and for your group’s ministry schedule.
Singers are needed for new music ministry groups in our parish. Three musicians – an organist and two pianists – have responded to our urgent need for music ministry. Now we need singers to join them!
The Jessica Martel Memorial Foundation is finalizing construction on Jessie’s House, with plans to open on April 1st, 2020. This facility will offer a shelter from domestic violence to individuals and families within the Sturgeon Region, Alexander First Nation, Edmonton Garrison and the City of St. Albert. Hoping to offer the comfort of a quilt to each client, the Foundation is looking for donations. The month of May is here, a time when the People of God express with particular intensity their love and devotion for the Blessed Virgin Mary. It is traditional in this month to pray the Rosary at home within the family. The restrictions of the pandemic have made us come to appreciate all the more this “family” aspect, also from a spiritual point of view.
For this reason, I want to encourage everyone to rediscover the beauty of praying the Rosary at home in the month of May. This can be done either as a group or individually; you can decide according to your own situations, making the most of both opportunities. The key to doing this is always simplicity, and it is easy also on the internet to find good models of prayers to follow.
Dear brothers and sisters, contemplating the face of Christ with the heart of Mary our Mother will make us even more united as a spiritual family and will help us overcome this time of trial. PRAYER SHAWLS
Talk together as a family about whether people outside of your family recognize common traits of your family. Are there physical resemblances that people recognize and so know each individual as a member of your family? Are there mannerisms that are shared by members of your family? What are some common interests and work that people might associate with your family? As you read today’s Gospel, John 14:1-12, keep in mind that members of the same family share many characteristics, even though each person in the family is an individual. What does Jesus tell His disciples about His relationship with the Father? The relationship between the Father and Jesus is so close that Jesus says that those who have seen and known Jesus have also seen and known the Father. Jesus promises His disciples that because of their faith in Him and in the Father, they too will be able to do the work of the Father as Jesus did. End your discussion by praying together that others will recognize in your family the work of the Father. Pray together the Lord’s Prayer.
Members of the same family often bear close resemblances to one another. Sometimes physical resemblances are shared within a family, but often the similarities are behavioral characteristics and mannerisms. We hear this observation affirmed through a number of common phrases: “He’s a chip off the old block” or “She’s her mother’s daughter.” Today’s Gospel points to a mystery of faith that might be examined in light of these familial relationships. In Jesus we see and know the Father. Likewise, the Father is known through the life and work of the Son, Jesus.

POPE FRANCIS’ PRAYER INTENTIONS
1st Sunday of Advent
The first part of today’s Gospel places Jesus’ ministry in the context of the writings of the prophet, Isaiah. Matthew wants to show that Jesus is the fulfillment of the prophecies given to the people of Israel, and he refers to Isaiah to do so. Isaiah says that the Messiah will begin his ministry in Galilee, the land of the Gentiles. When Jesus begins to preach in Galilee, Matthew points to his ministry as a fulfillment of Isaiah’s prophecy, proof that Jesus is the Messiah.
When Jesus called his first disciples, the Gospel tells us that the fishermen (Peter and Andrew, James and John) dropped everything to follow Jesus immediately. Yet this Gospel tells us little about the prior experience that the fishermen had of Jesus. Did they know him? Had they heard him preach? What kind of person must Jesus have been to invoke such a response? We can imagine that Jesus was a powerful presence to elicit a response as immediate and complete as these first disciples gave.
Today’s Gospel describes the beginning of Jesus’ public ministry. In the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, and Luke (called the Synoptic Gospels), Jesus’ public ministry begins after his baptism by John the Baptist and after his retreat to the desert where he was tempted by the devil. When Jesus returns from the desert, he hears that John has been arrested.
The Gospel concludes with a description of the ministry that Jesus begins in Galilee. Jesus inaugurates the Kingdom of God with his work. He teaches in the synagogue and preaches the kingdom. His ability to cure people’s diseases and illness is a sign of the kingdom. In Jesus’ ministry, we already begin to see the Kingdom of God among us.

DIVINE MERCY MINUTE
Under those guidelines, parishes will still have to meet several conditions for public celebrations of the Mass. These include:
The Catholic Bishops of Alberta are welcoming the news that attendance limits on worship services will be expanded under Stage 2 of the Alberta government’s relaunch strategy.
However, the guidelines for Stage 1 of reintroducing public celebrations of the Mass were developed by a task force the Bishops established under the direction of Archbishop Richard Smith of Edmonton and Bishop William McGrattan of Calgary. Until further notice, those guidelines remain in effect.

- Asking attendees to answer a series of health and travel-related questions, as recommended by Alberta Health Services.- Recording contact information of attendees for the purpose of contact tracing, if necessary.
- Requiring masks for all volunteers and all those who wish to receive Communion.- Extra cleaning of the Church between Masses.
- Sanitizing hands upon entry and exit.
