SEVENTEENT H S U NDAY IN ORDIN ARY TIME
17th Sunday in Ordinary Time, Year A
My Dear Brother and Sisters in Christ,
Today we find ourselves at the midpoint of our liturgical year. We have celebrated well the first 17 weeks of Ordinary Time, and now, we have yet another 17 weeks of Ordinary Time to go. Undoubtedly, for some, time passes quickly while for others, time passes slowly. As most of you keep social distance and choose to pray and worship at home and on-line, it may seem as though this liturgical year is passing at a snail’s pace.
The wonderful invitation given to us is to take this time to enter more deeply into a meaningful relationship with God in daily prayer. In this manner, time that passes slowly gives us pause…allows us to reflect upon the “gift” of time with God. In other words, to lose track of time with God. Such was the case for Solomon in the first reading from the Book of Kings. God speaks to Solomon and says, “Ask something of me and I will give it to you.” Solomon in deep slumber replies; “Give your servant, therefore, an understanding heart to judge your people and to distinguish right from wrong.”
Truly, this reply pleased the Lord and God replies to Solomon; “Because you have asked for this—not for a long life for yourself, nor for riches, nor for the life of your enemies, but for understanding so that you may know what is right—I do as you requested. I give you a heart so wise and understanding that there has never been anyone like you up to now, and after you there will come no one to equal you.” The Lord’s answer to Solomon’s humble request was gracious and no doubt, beyond what Solomon would have ever expected. God answers prayer in ways that we would never have expected.
This is the result of turning to the Lord in prayer and asking, not for ourselves, but that we may be a blessing, be humble, be given kind and understanding hearts. This can only happen when we put the needs of others before our own. This can only happen when we know that the kingdom of heaven is the only treasure that our hearts should long for. In this way, we, like Solomon, have begun to liken our hearts to God, who has given us this gift of time to spend with Him. It is my prayer that ALL of us experience the depth and breath of a life-giving relationship with God in earnest and steadfast prayer. Then, we can look forward to the opportunities that await us as we embrace the final weeks of Ordinary Time and beyond.
May God Bless You, One and All!

SEVENTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
SUNDAY READING REFLECTIONSFirst Reading:During his reign King Solomon ensured peace with Egypt and other nations, built the Jerusalemtemple and palace, and central-ized power. Israel grew so much in wealth and prestige that Solomon’s reign was later remembered as a golden age in the history of Israel. There’s a dark side to Israel’s ascent, but it would only become apparent after Solomon’s death. Solomon’s success is portrayed as being founded on his devotion to God.Why do you think God appears to Solomon?
The Gospel:Like all good parables, both of these are open to multiple interpretations. Here are just a few: 1. God’s kingdom is the only thing a person should want.2. A person must take immediate action to be part of God’s kingdom. 3. People must be willing to give up everything for God’s kingdom, including what-ever or whoever seems important or necessary. 4. Whether stumbling across God’s kingdom or seeking it, one must act quickly to enter into it.What are you searching for? How will you know when you’ve found it?Source: oursundayreadings.wordpress.com

MASS INTENTIONS & READINGS
Feast of St. Martha: Wednesday, July 29Martha was “anxious about many things” but she properly welcomed Jesus into her home. She brought Him food and drink. She probably had His feet washed as He entered, or did it herself. After Jesus told Martha to relax and be with Him instead of running around worrying, she probably did sit at His feet to listen along with Mary and Simon. She must have listened carefully because later on, when Jesus asks her if she believes He is “the resurrection and the life,” she says yes. We who tend to be anxious can learn a lot from this. Even as we are running around being anxious we can welcome Jesus into our lives. We can do that by remembering that Jesus is in the work and in the people we serve. St. Martha, pray for us. News About the Church Pipe OrganHere at St. Michael we are very blessed to have a nice-sized pipe organ to match the majestic space where we gather for prayer and worship. From what I have heard from so many, it is one of the things that attracts people to our great parish - indeed the organ is the ideal instrument for supporting congregational singing, which is a significant part of one’s active participation in the liturgy.
Although a fair portion of the pipework of our organ is in good working order, many of the electrical and mechanical components within the organ date back to the date of its installation in 1965 and are showing their age. These components are worn and are no longer reliable and, in fact, are subject to failure and overheating, making them a very real fire danger. As the age of the organ increases, so too does the cost of repairs as more and more parts become obsolete and irreplaceable. Furthermore, many of these repairs are mere temporary fixes for much larger issues. The cost for the latest repairs, required after the church was not in use at the start of the pandemic, was in the thousands, and this was to simply to make the organ usable for the liturgy again.
Over the last few months, I have been compiling information and proposals for a more permanent solution to the many issues plaguing our aging organ. I will be providing more details on these issues in upcoming bulletin articles but will gladly share a more detailed report to any interested parties. Moving forward, our initial plans are to address the most critically necessary modifications in making the organ safe, hoping to begin by the summer of 2021.
Please feel free to contact me at [email protected] for more information or to express ways that you may be able to provide support.

Updates from St. Michael Catholic SchoolDear Parishioners,
I hope that you are safe and well. Thank you for all of your prayers and support as we ended the school year with distance learning. We are busy getting ready for the 2020-2021 school year. We hope to be able to start the school year with face-to-face instruction, but we will follow the guidance from the Governor, County Judge, the Cardinal, and the Superintendent of Catholic Schools. The school has purchased two disinfecting foggers like the one that the Parish purchased, so that we are ready to clean and disinfect as needed.
We are accepting applications for all grade levels. Currently, we have openings in fourth through eighth grades for the 2020-2021 school year. The admissions application is available on our school websitewww.stmichaelcs.org.
Thank you again for your continued prayers and support!
Blessings,
