Through our extensive network of partners and agencies — and the generous support of donors like you — we’re doing a world of good.

For the world.For the community.

Doing a World of GoodPartnering for a Vibrant Jewish Future 76

We have worked tirelessly to define what

Federation will mean in the years to come,

how it will be a relevant and effective

organization guided by a clear, easily

understood and widely accepted mission,

and how it will be built and managed to

fulfill that mission going forward.

This past year has been marked by

innovation and reinvigoration within the

Federation movement and here in our

own community. At home and across

North America, Federations are working

to respond to the needs of the Jewish

community with energy, creativity and

initiative that are aligned with Jewish

values. Just one year after launching our

new name and logo to strengthen our

identity with Federations across North

America, we continue to establish our-

selves as a strong, vital and effective force

in building our community for the future.

We are grateful to our board and staff

who have worked so hard to ensure our

success. The following accomplishments —

our top 10 of the year — can make us all

proud to be part of the Federation family.

1. Name Change

We successfully changed our name and

identity to align more closely with the

North America Federation system and

benefit from national exposure, visibility,

and recognition.

2. 75thAnniversary

In commemoration of this milestone, our

75th anniversary celebration on January

15 was a wonderful night in which we

recognized the leaders who have built

this great organization over the years and

whose efforts have enabled Federation to

do the work it does today.

3. Community Event: Celebrating Jewish Heroes

We hosted a free community event

featuring Natan Sharansky, a true Jewish

hero who traveled to San Diego to help

celebrate the 20th Anniversary of

Operation Exodus, a proud and momentous

time in our history. He shared his story of

heroism and freedom with our community.

Another highlight of the event was a

moving ceremony in support of “Torahs for

our Troops” that provides Torah scrolls for

use by military chaplains all over the world

that began the effort to fund the writing of

a San Diego Jewish community Torah for

use by Jewish military chaplains serving in

the field of battle.

4. Community Planning & Innovation Center

Federation is a catalyst for the develop-

ment of innovative programs and services

through our Community Planning &

Innovation Center. Our Community

Innovation Fund is an exciting, new,

and ambitious approach to funding

that focuses on our top five community

priorities. Twelve projects, including

Moishe House and One Happy Camper,

were initiated through this fund with

the goal of strengthening the San Diego

Jewish community.

Since opening last October, Moishe

House has already hosted more than 40

programs for hundreds of young adults.

And thanks to the One Happy Camper

program, 121 Jewish children from the area

are attending overnight camp for the first

time.

Dear Friends, In 2011, the Jewish Federation of San Diego County celebrated 75 years of service and honored

those whose selfless dedication, visionary leadership and unshakeable purpose brought us to this milestone. Together with our supporters, we have been instrumental in helping to establish San Diego as one of the leading Jewish communities in our country.

Doing a World of GoodPartnering for a Vibrant Jewish Future 98

5. JCrC

One of our biggest accomplishments of

the past year was the introduction of the

new Jewish Community Relations Center

(JCRC), which will soon unveil a new

Jewish Community Relations Council with

representatives from partners across the

diverse spectrum of our community. The

new Center, established with the generous

support of the Leichtag and Viterbi Family

Foundations, is already serving as the

public affairs arm of Federation and the

Jewish community — as well as a place for

the community to come together in times

of crisis, celebration, and commemoration.

6. Jewish Educational services Council

We are very excited about the work

we are doing to ensure a bright future

for Jewish education. Together with

our community partners, the Lawrence

Family Jewish Community Center (JCC)

and its Center for Jewish Culture (CJC),

we are undertaking a new collaborative

framework for the advancement of

Jewish education in San Diego. In August

2011, the Agency for Jewish Education’s

programming, resources, and services were

integrated into the JCC and CJC program

offerings. Federation, in turn, established

the Jewish Educational Services Council

to engage Jewish community educational

stakeholders in a visionary planning and

advisory forum.

7. Young Adult Engagement

We have focused on several meaningful

initiatives to engage young Jewish adults

in the San Diego area and connect them to

our community.

This past year our Young Adult Division

hosted more than 360 events — an

event a day. Our diverse programming

included food drives, fundraising, Shabbat

Connections, business networking, happy

hours, softball and even Jewish speed

dating. In partnership with the Leichtag

Family Foundation, we also made a major

commitment to Birthright Israel. We

collected critical funds to help ensure that

any young Jewish adult in San Diego who

wanted to could participate in a Birthright

Israel trip and thereby strengthen their

personal Jewish identity.

Finally, The 2030 Project, also sponsored

by the Leichtag Family Foundation, is a

new planning initiative aimed at bringing

Jews in their 20s and 30s together to

envision and create a stronger San Diego

Jewish community. Federation offered

subsidies to attend Jewish conferences,

which have a direct correlation to young

adult engagement. As a direct result, 46

young San Diegans were sponsored to

attend TribeFest, JFNA’s innovative and

creative conference for young adults. We

look forward to sharing more about the

outcome of this initiative after a planning

summit of thought leaders convenes to

discuss the future of San Diego’s emerging

adult community.

10. Disaster relief

In this year marked by several major

natural disasters, the San Diego Jewish

Community continued its tradition of

support during times of crisis. Just as last

year when Federation provided critical

aid to those affected by catastrophic

earthquakes in Haiti and Chile, this year we

raised funds for the victims of a massive

earthquake and tsunami in Japan, the

disastrous forest fires in Northern Israel,

and the devastating tornadoes in the U.S.

As always, the Federation movement,

through our partners, responded instantly

to help those in need, and this ability is a

true strength of our Federation.

Looking Ahead

In the coming year, we will continue our

efforts to meet the needs of Jews around

the world and build our community for the

future. We are committed to do more and

look forward to working with each and every

one of you as we look toward celebrating

100 years of Federation in San Diego.

Thank you for all you do for the community.

Your support means so much, particularly

during these challenging times.

Steve Morris President and CEO

8. senior services

As part of our renewed commitment

to ensure quality of life for seniors, we

expanded our support of On the Go. This

senior transportation system — developed

in a partnership of Jewish Family Service,

the Jewish Community Foundation, and

Federation with several other Jewish

organizations — provides a cost-effective

transportation option for seniors. It allows

them to maintain their independence,

manage their health and medical needs,

maintain social activities and stay connected

to Jewish religious and cultural life. Over

the past year, we also revitalized the

Jewish Senior Services Council to focus on

identifying and planning new innovative

programs for the needs of seniors. The

new JSSC will be composed of both

volunteers and professionals.

9. sha’ar HaNegev Partnership

This past year marked the 13th year

of our longstanding partnership with

Sha’ar HaNegev. This Bar Mitzvah year

was an opportune time to re-imagine

our partnership and continue to develop

compelling ways to connect Jews in San

Diego to the people of Israel. We are also

proud of our continued commitment to

fundraising for a safe high school, the

Sha’ar HaNegev Educational Village. Its

grand opening early next year will be an

emotional occasion for all of us.

(09:25:15)

Studies show that kids who attend Jewish camps are 55% more likely to maintain a lifelong connection with the Jewish community. That’s why Federation funds camp experiences in the U.S., in Israel and around the world. Our local One Happy Camper program has enabled more than 121 San Diego area kids to attend Jewish camps for the very first time this past summer.

FEDERATION MATTERS AT EVERY HOUR

(01:46:03)

From armed conflicts to acts of terror to natural disasters, Jewish Federation responds.

Whenever there are Jews in need, Federation and our overseas partners are there to help.

Doing a World of GoodPartnering for a Vibrant Jewish Future 1716

(11:08:16)

More Jews live in poverty in the former Soviet Union than anywhere else in the world. Nearly two thirds of Ethiopian families and one-third of all children in Israel live below the poverty line. Wherever on earth there is poverty, Federation is there with our overseas partners — bringing hope as well as access to critical social services.

(05:55:31)

From kosher food banks and soup kitchens to Meals on Wheels and other food programs Jewish Federation funds prevent and alleviate hunger here in San Diego and all over the world.

(10:35:47)

Federation funds absorption centers across Israel, helping prepare new immigrants for their new lives. For 13 years, the Jewish Federation of San Diego County has funded the work of IBIM, one of Israel’s most effective absorption centers.

(02:26:08)

Responding quickly to the deadly tornadoes that gripped the South and Midwest in 2011, Federation efforts provided medical care and recovery assistance. From Joplin to Tuscaloosa, we were there to help.

Doing a World of GoodPartnering for a Vibrant Jewish Future 1918

(12:35:57)

In keeping with the long tradition of Jewish humanitarianism

during times of crisis, Federation provided critical aid to those

affected by the massive earthquake and tsunami in Japan.

Within hours, the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee

had people on the ground with food and supplies and opened a

field hospital.

(10:15:23)

Federation helps the future leaders of our Jewish community

enhance their connection to Israel and the Jewish people. Since

1999, for example, more than 260,000 young adults from 52

countries have visited Israel on Birthright Israel trips Including

more than 3,000 from San Diego.

(11:48:32)

Through Federation, the San Diego Jewish community has

generously donated over $1 million toward the construction

of a new High School Arts Center for school children in Sha’ar

HaNegev who live under a constant threat of missile fire. The

school, scheduled to open in early 2012, will provide a safe

environment for students and faculty to learn, grow, and

celebrate Jewish life without fear.

(02:36:51)

Federation joined a historic effort to raise $5.5 million to help

bring the remaining 8,700 Falas Mura community members

from Ethiopia to Israel. “Completing the Journey” will close the

circle the Jewish Federations began in the 1980s and 1990s

with Operations Moses and Solomon, which brought more than

100,000 Ethiopian Jews to Israel.

260,000Since 1999, more than 260,000 young adults from 52 countries have visited Israel on Birthright Israel trips.

Community Planning & Innovation Center works with local

and worldwide Jewish communal institutions and organizations

to understand, predict and plan for the Jewish community’s

needs in San Diego, Israel and around the world and strategizes

how to effectively meet those needs. Programs and organizations

include:

Jewish Senior Services Council (JSSC) — This community council

is aimed at improving the quality of life for older Jewish adults

throughout San Diego Country.

On the Go — This program provides cost effective senior

transportation options so that seniors can maintain their

independence, manage their health and medical needs,

participate in social activities and stay connected to Jewish

religious and cultural life.

“Chesed Home is an exciting new concept that will soon become a reality —

the first home of its kind in San Diego, a place where adults with mental

health disabilities can live in a safe, secure and Jewish-oriented environment.

Federation has given us the impetus to move forward, with a generous one-

year innovation grant that has allowed us to explore licensing, zoning and other

logistical issues. More importantly, Federation has provided us with people

resources — experienced trained staff — and knowledge resources that

have been invaluable.” Fern siegel, President of Hope Village, Past President of Jewish Family

service of san Diego and Co-chair of mental Health Committee of JFs

connect24/7/365

In 2010–11, along with a name change, Jewish Federation of San Diego County initiated a new structure: a collaborative effort among several centers, each with a particular emphasis. This structure will enable us to optimize planning for the future; connect Jews in San Diego to Israel, the worldwide Jewish community and each other; provide a voice for our community in the public sphere; and most importantly, be a partner in Jewish giving.

Partnering for a Vibrant Jewish Future22 Doing a World of Good 23

The Community Innovation Fund — This bold, new and ambitious

approach to funding is designed to stimulate grassroots projects

and programs to improve the San Diego Jewish community.

Federation opened the grant application process to the

entire non-profit San Diego Jewish community, receiving 32

applications, in an effort to engage people at various stages

in their Jewish journeys. An Innovation Leadership Gathering,

under the auspices of Jewish Jumpstart, identified the need for

innovation grant funding as a top priority.

After a rigorous review process, the Innovation Review

Committee selected 10 projects to receive a total of $50,000.

Acting as a catalyst for change, Federation-funded projects

include an Israel advocacy project on local campuses, a Jewish

Discovery Expo, Tarbuton, G’Mach-Jewish Gift Closet, Chesed

House for Jewish people with mental health challenges, an

intergenerational program, and a Jewish genetic disease-

screening program.

Other key projects initiated through this fund include Moishe

House San Diego, which opened its doors in October 2010 and

has since hosted 40 plus programs for more than 800 young

adults. Serving young adults in their 20s, Moishe House connects

the post-college Jewish population with each other and the

wider Jewish population to build Jewish identity and foster

Jewish community involvement and learning.

Another key initiative coming out of the Community Innovation

Fund is One Happy Camper, which has already funded first-time

Jewish overnight camp experiences for 121 young San Diegans,

thanks to the cooperation and support of local San Diego

schools, businesses and many area synagogues.

Israel & Overseas Center connects Jews in San Diego to

Israel and the worldwide Jewish community. Programs and

organizations include:

Israel Learning Series — This series of programs is designed to

increase the community’s understanding of Israel’s history and

culture, and its socioeconomic and geopolitical contributions

to the world. A recent program featured Ishmael Khaldi, Policy

Advisor to the Foreign Minister of Israel and Israel’s first Bedouin

diplomat.

Sha’ar HaNegev Partnership — Federation’s partner region,

Sha’ar HaNegev, or “Gate to the Negev,” is a thriving, green oasis

in Israel’s Negev desert. The region sits next to Gaza and is under

constant threat from Kassam rockets. Despite that fact, housing

is increasingly in demand and the community is flourishing.

Federation is proud to help fulfill David Ben-Gurion’s dream of

seeing the Negev bloom. We are pleased to have contributed

over $1 million to the new Sha’ar HaNegev Educational Village,

a state-of-the- art, safe secondary school for the community,

which is scheduled to open in early 2012.

JFNA Negev Coalition — This coalition, in which the Jewish

Federation of San Diego County is partnering with 10 other

Federations nationally, was formed to help provide employment,

education and social service support for family members of the

Israel Defense Forces (IDF) related to their planned relocation

from Tel Aviv to the Negev.

Jewish Community relations Center provides a voice for the

Jewish community in media, government and intergroup affairs.

The Center’s focus is on Israel advocacy, Latino-Jewish relations,

education of government officials, strengthening interfaith

relations, and advancing the San Diego Jewish community

priorities at all governmental levels. Programs and organizations

include:

Israel Action Network (IAN) — Rooted in the conviction that

local communities can and must play a more substantial role in

countering the assault on Israel’s legitimacy, the IAN was created

to mount an effective and strategic response to deal with

boycotts, divestment, and sanctions (BDS).

Israel Advocacy Leadership Forum (IALF) — This is a working

group of community professionals and volunteer leaders who are

actively engaged in the work of Israel advocacy in the San Diego

area. Their mission is to promote Israel as a viable, safe, secure,

Jewish and democratic state.

Secure Community Network — This national organization focuses

on matters of communal safety, security and preparedness in

response to a heightened security concern among national and

local Jewish leadership.

Community Engagement & Leadership Center is one of four

centers envisioned by The Jewish Federation of San Diego

County as part of a bold and innovative plan to build and

sustain a vibrant Jewish future for San Diego. Specifically, the

Community Engagement & Leadership Center will:

Provide the main information and technology portal through

which new and current members of the Jewish community

will get involved and connected to Jewish life in San Diego.

Coordinate a young adult engagement project that brings Jews

in their 20s and 30s together to envision and create a San Diego

Jewish community that is responsive to the strengths and needs

of young Jewish adults.

Partner with San Diego County synagogues to increase

engagement in the San Diego Jewish community.

Become a volunteer clearinghouse within the Jewish

community, engaging individuals and groups in volunteering,

developing volunteer programs, and connecting volunteerism

with Jewish education and leadership development.

Implement leadership development strategies that will

attract, engage and prepare new volunteer community

leaders as well as improve the leadership skills of

current leaders through board member training, succession

planning, and governance enhancement programs for Jewish

organizations of all types. Programs include:

The 2030 Project — Sponsored by the Leichtag Family

Foundation, this new Federation initiative is aimed at bringing

young Jewish adults together to envision and create a strong

San Diego Jewish community by the year 2030. Specifically, the

2030 Project offers subsidies to attend events like TribeFest,

a gathering of young Jews from Federations across North

America, held in Las Vegas this past March. Plans are also in

the works for a summit of thought leaders to discuss the past,

present, and future of San Diego’s emerging adult community.

Community Chaplaincy Program — This program serves the

religious and spiritual needs of unaffiliated Jewish patients,

residents and family members in hospitals and long-term care

facilities.

ISRAEL - SAN DIEGO CONNECTION

sha’ar HaNegev Partnership Community

Federation’s partner region, Sha’ar HaNegev, or “Gate to the

Negev,” is a thriving, green oasis in Israel’s Negev desert. The

region is next to Gaza and under constant threat from Kassam

rockets. Despite that fact, school construction is on the rise and

housing is increasingly in demand. Federation is proud to help

fulfill David Ben-Gurion’s dream of seeing the Negev bloom.

san Diego IBIm Youth Village

The Jewish Federation of San Diego County is a proud funder

of the San Diego-IBIM Student Village in the Sha’ar HaNegev

region. Today, nearly 18 years since it opened its doors, the IBIM

Student Village is at the forefront of young adult Aliyah and youth

absorption. Serving as the first home for student-aged immigrants

from around the world, the Village is not only a place to sleep and

study, it is a place of promise and progress — where residents take

their initial steps as Israeli citizens and build their future in Israel.

Taglit Birthright Israel

Taglit-Birthright Israel provides young Jewish adults, ages 18 to

26, with the gift of a first-time, 10-day, educational trip to Israel.

Its follow-up program, NEXT, inspires all Taglit-Birthright Israel

trip participants and their peers to expand their connections

to the land and people of Israel, to deepen their personal

commitments to Jewish life, and to find or form a community

where Jewish responsibility, learning, and celebration thrive.

Taglit Birthright Israel is a unique partnership between private

philanthropists through The Birthright Israel Foundation; the

people of Israel through the Government of Israel; and Jewish

communities worldwide (including North American Jewish

Federations, Keren Hayesod and the Jewish Agency for Israel).

Jewish Council for Public Affairs (JCPA)

The Jewish Council for Public Affairs (JPCA) serves as the representative voice of the

organized American Jewish community.

Jewish Education service of North America (JEsNA)

For more than 25 years, JESNA has been working closely with local and national partners,

including federations to improve the quality of Jewish education through North America.

An independent and community-based agency, JESNA provides services through three

Partnering for a Vibrant Jewish Future36 Doing a World of Good 37

Our partner 24/7/365 - Jewish Federations of North America (JFNA)Our national umbrella organization, JFNA represents 157 Jewish

Federations and 300 independent Network communities

across North America. Its mission is to mobilize financial and

social resources through its philanthropic endeavors, strategic

initiatives and international agencies to strengthen the Jewish

people. JFNA is also the voice of the Federation movement,

meeting Jewish needs throughout North America and around

the world.

24/7/365support

American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee (JDC)

Founded in 1914, JDC gives global expression to the principle that

all Jews are responsible for one another. Working on behalf of

North America’s Jewish Federations, JDC is dedicated to rescuing

those in danger, providing relief to Jews in distress, and revitalizing

Jewish communities. Active today in more than 70 countries, JDC

and its partners work to rescue Jewish lives at risk, bring relief

to Jews in need, and help to renew lost bonds to Jewish identity

and Jewish culture. The organization is also committed to helping

Israel’s most vulnerable citizens, both Jewish and non-Jewish,

overcome the social challenges they face. In addition, in the spirit

of “healing the world,” JCD offers non-sectarian disaster relief and

long-terms assistance worldwide.

JDC’s reach is global, yet it is uniquely equipped to make a deep

impact locally. For example, in the former Soviet Union, home to

the world’s poorest Jews, a network of JDC-supported Hesed

welfare centers offer relief to 168,000 Jewish elderly in some

2,800 towns and villages, while Jewish Community Centers are

fueling Jewish renewal for all ages across the region. Wherever

JDC works, it is viewed as a trusted partner to propel vulnerable

Jewish and non-Jewish communities from dependency to self-

sustainability.

OUR INTERNATIONAL PARTNERS

Partnering for a Vibrant Jewish Future38 Doing a World of Good 39

Jewish Agency for Israel (JAFI)

This humanitarian organization is committed to the highest

ideals of freedom and equality, and has been the driving force

behind the unique bond between Jews worldwide and Israel. For

over 80 years, the Jewish Agency has served as the link between

the Jewish people and Israel, working to ensure the future of

a connected, committed, global Jewish people with a strong

Israel at its center. Among its many accomplishments, JAFI has

brought over 3 million Jews to the land of Israel.

World OrT

ORT is one of the largest non-governmental education and

training organizations in the world with activities in more than

100 countries past and present and with current operations

in Israel, the CIS and Baltic States, Latin America, Western

Europe, Eastern Europe, North America, Africa, Asia and the

Pacific. A non-profit, non-political organization, ORT has met

the educational, and manpower training needs of contemporary

society with more than 3 million graduates worldwide since its

inception.

24/7/365teamwork

Doing a World of GoodPartnering for a Vibrant Jewish Future 4140

Jewish Caring

Our Jewish community has a long tradition

of humanitarianism. The broad reach of

Federation and our partners JDC and

JAFI assures that we, as a community, can

respond instantly to assist those who are in

need. In addition to emergency response

work, our network of community partners

in the San Diego Jewish community and

across the country focus on providing

basic human services. Together, we

provide the safety net of services upon

which our most vulnerable rely. Under the

current economic challenges faced by our

community, many long-time donors have

now found themselves on the other side of

the table. It has been heartening for many

to find the caring hand they had been

supporting for many years is now there for

them in their time of need.

Jewish Future

An important aspect of the work we do is

to develop and strengthen Jewish identity,

as individuals and as a collective — to

preserve our history and create lasting

cultural con-nections. The strong and

capable Jewish leaders of tomorrow

will require support and education that

instill Jewish values and pride in Israel.

Federation and its partners remain

committed to building and maintaining

a re-silient sense of Jewish identity and

continuity.

Israel & Overseas

Federation and its partner programs

provide unique opportunities to connect

San Diegans to Israel and other Jewish

communities worldwide — working to

strengthen the Jewish people globally.

We feed, shelter and provide healthcare

and medicine to Jews in the former

Soviet Union; rescue Jews whose lives are

threatened in several corners of the world;

and connect the next generation to Israel

as a core part of their identity.

Jewish Advocacy

Now more than ever, there is a need for

clear advocacy on Jewish issues, here in

San Diego, Sacramento and Washington

DC. The Jewish Federation of San Diego

County, and its partners, forge connections

among different Jewish groups and with

the larger community, and take a proactive

role in maintaining Israel’s positive

standing in society.
