Dear Friends,

Welcome to the first edition of what will become our bi-annual agency newsletter. It is my hope that through this communication we will be able to inform you about all the wonderful programs and services offered by Ruth Rales Jewish Family Service (JFS). It has been said that the measure of a society is how we care for our most vulnerable residents. Since 1979, JFS has provided help, hope and humanity through our comprehensive range of programs and services for people of all ages and beliefs. We continue to refine our programs and add new ones as the need arises.

In addition to highlighting our programs and services, our newsletter will also recognize and thank our many generous supporters. We could not accomplish any of our mission without your help – THANK YOU! We also thank our many volunteers without whose help we would not be able to provide many low or no-cost services in the community. Our volunteers visit the home-bound, drive people to doctor appointments and shopping, check in with a phone call, are mentors, help deliver food, lead support groups, and the list goes on and on.

I invite you to consider becoming involved with the agency in whatever capacity you may choose. I love your feedback so as you read through this inaugural publication, if questions arise, please don’t hesitate to contact me or any of our staff.Enjoy!

The Forster Family Kosher Food Pantry at JFS has been providing a vital service since 1996 through bi-weekly food deliveries in our community. These food packages, including non-perishable kosher food, milk, bread and fresh produce, are meant as supplements for recipients... but in many cases actually sustain them! Many community partners continue to support the Forster Family Food Pantry at JFS and this past Thanksgiving season was especially bountiful because of the efforts of our neighbors. Woodfield Country Club residents came together collecting money and volunteers to provide Thanksgiving meals to 63 Century Village recipients. Boxes were decorated, cards were made, and meals delivered in a friendly visit. Thanks to Jessica Roof and her staff and Woodfield residents for providing a heartwarming Thanksgiving for our recipients. Mr. Jeffry Schnee of Janney, Montgomery and Scott and his partner Stacey Englander provided 275 Thanksgiving meals and 23 full turkey packages for our families. Their herculean effort was most impressive and our gratitude and thanks go to you both for caring, and providing such a bounty for our recipients. We received so many calls thanking us for the meal!

Robin Rubin and Amy Ross of St. Andrews Country Club provided a day of community service for teens at the Sandler Center. On Sunday, November 21st, St. Andrews’ women and teens organized baskets and fruit for 63 of our recipients. The teens put together

fruit baskets with handmade cards, stickers, wrap and bows and offered them to our food pantry recipients. This was a wonderful intergenerational collaboration enjoyed by all! B’nai Torah Congregation’s Bar/Bat Mitzvah class came to the synagogue on Sunday, November 21st for a hands-on “fill and deliver” day. Students raised enough money to cover 16 deliveries to our recipients. Coordinator Leslie Viselman, students and parents decorated boxes, made cards, filled boxes with a holiday meal, and made all deliveries. Other recent Food Pantry activities include:

Attendees at the annual Women’s Education Day at Boca West Country Club collected a bounty of paper towels, tuna, and toothpaste which were all donated to support Food Pantry recipients.

Lexington Community held their annual food drive and we received over 10 boxes of food for the pantry.

Weinbaum Yeshiva High School held a food drive that provided a much needed assortment of canned goods and supplemental items for food packages.

Stonebridge Community, under campaign director Dana Vizner, held an annual Chanukah giving campaign and donated close to $6,000 to provide food boxes and meals to the 63 recipients in Century Village and six additional families. Message from Laurie Intondi, Director of Case Management Services

06Senior ServiCeS

At JFS, our case managers help guide seniors and their families through the complexities of aging, helping to choose the direction that best fits the individual situation. Our mission is to respect clients’ needs and wishes, maintain maximum personal independence and ensure a safe environment. Our services include geriatric case management, CareLink, Chaplaincy, socialization programs, Holocaust Survivors Assistance, telephone reassurance and friendly visitors, transportation to doctor’s appointments, as well as linkages to all community services.

This program strives to act as eyes and ears for out-of-state and local adult children who often need assistance coping with aging issues of their parents. The care management team helps families by completing comprehensive assessments of their loved ones, which help to determine plans of care. Our main priority is to honor the client’s and family’s wishes for care, including setting up services in the home to ensure the safety and security of our clients.

Our care managers help families arrange placement in independent or assisted living communities as well as skilled nursing and short-term rehabilitation stays. The care managers work with the hospitals, doctors, home health care agencies, retirement living communities and skilled nursing staff to coordinate the best possible care for your loved ones. We work to help families transfer loved ones closer to them and help orchestrate all logistics of moving with referrals to Jewish Family Services near their new homes. CareLink can give peace of mind to seniors and their families regardless of the distance between them. We are just a phone call away.

The Holocaust program at JFS provides home care and housekeeping for Holocaust survivors, helps with reparations claims and provides emergency grants for housing and medical needs. JFS is proud to once again partner with Bet Tzedek Legal Services in assisting Holocaust survivors to apply for the ZRBG (ghetto) pension.

Through the efforts of local coordinating attorney Kevin Packman of the law firm of Holland & Knight, we have had four free legal clinics in our office in the last six months. Over 30 survivors have received help in filing their applications at these clinics. To date, four of the survivors have received approvals for the pension from Germany with one survivor to receive retroactive payment back to 2005.

Held the 1st and 3rd Thursday each month for Holocaust survivors, this socialization program includes lunch and transportation at no cost with advance reservations.• 10am – 1pm at The Volen Center• February 3 - Come and kvell as the Pre-K

Wednesday, December 15, 2010 JFS held Café Europa at Bnai Torah Synagogue in Boca Raton for a gathering of 425 Holocaust survivors. Graciously sponsored by Cliff & Jill Viner, this luncheon enables survivors from south Palm Beach County to meet old friends, make new friends and on occasion connect with someone from the “old country.” Café Europa will be held again June 15, 2011 and is sponsored by the Claims Conference.

An out-of-town adult child contacted JFS concerned with family members needing immediate help. A visit to the home of a 92-year-old extremely frail father with recent post bladder cancer treatment and 89-year-old mother who is almost completely blind, incontinent and suffering from dementia. Also in the home is a 60-year-old son diagnosed with traumatic brain injury and depression. JFS arranged for cleaning help, a home health aide with a specialty in dementia to visit the mother, a home health aide to relieve the father of a portion of his caregiver responsibilities and a specialist to provide life planning needs for the son. Quality of life has definitely improved for this family, and the out-of-town child has had a great deal of his anxiety relieved.

News from Sue Davis, Director Welcome Home Program

The fall season was an exciting time for the members of the Welcome Home Program as we moved into our new space in the Shirley & Barton Weisman Delray Community Center. The room is flooded with natural light from the floor to ceiling windows and has proven to be more therapeutic for the members then we had anticipated.

Our annual recognition dinner and fundraiser was held in October and was a great success – well attended by program members, their families and our generous donors. As a result, JFS has introduced some exciting new components to Welcome Home: a pet therapy program with the help of our friends from Tri County Animal Shelter, and an art therapist who will be working with interested members on developing their artistic talents as well as assisting them in understanding their emotional responses to different mediums and color scapes. Our arts and crafts teacher continues to work with the members on different crafts throughout the year and is assisting us in preparing for an arts and crafts fair where the members can display and sell their crafts to create revenue for the program.

During construction, several program members asked about a garden area outside the new program room. A 20’ by 25’ garden plot was created and the Garden Club at the Welcome Home Program was initiated. Home Depot provided the supplies needed to begin our garden project. We have a volunteer leader and two high school students who regularly assist us with maintaining the garden.

Welcome Home is a nonsectarian community-based drop-in center for adults with persistent mental illness and/or developmental disabilities. Welcome Home is designed to increase self-esteem, educate and provide clients with everyday skills needed to foster their independence. This program meets four days each week.

The Clinical Services department at JFS has seven full and part-time social workers on staff to provide counseling services to the community as well as two social work interns from FAU. We also employ two per diem therapists who help us out during our most busy times. JFS is pleased to announce that in January, licensed psychologist Dr. Jill Schwartzberg joined our staff to treat clients and conduct evaluations for children and adults. Dr. Schwartzberg recently relocated to South Florida from New York where she was the supervising psychologist for a very large birth-to-five agency. At JFS, she will also supervise two master-level psychology interns from Nova University. To refer a child for an evaluation or treatment, please contact the JFS intake department at 561.852.3333.

Jarden Consumer Solutions Employees Support JFS Program For Second Year

On October 20, 2010, Jarden employees presented a check for $5,000 to JFS for the agency’s Welcome Home Program.

Every contribution helps make a tangible difference in the lives of the people who need it most. Donations support the full range of vital programs and services and direct funds to where the most pressing need is at any given time.

Memorial and Tribute Gifts: When your tax-deductible gift is a “tribute” for a special occasion, or in honor or memory of someone special, you get the satisfaction of giving a truly meaningful gift and we take care of sending the card.

Legacy Giving: Consider a “Promise for the Future” by including JFS in your estate plans. Your legacy gift allows you to invest and strengthen the future of the people we serve in the community and at the same time maintain control of your assets during your lifetime. Giving opportunities include bequests, named endowment funds, life income plans, charitable gift annuities, charitable remainder trusts, charitable lead trusts, gifts of stock and retirement plan gifts. You may also name JFS as the owner and beneficiary of a life insurance policy.

Matching Gifts: Many employers sponsor matching gift programs and will match charitable contributions made by their employees. Ask your employer or human resources department if they participate in a matching gift program. With a matching gift you can sometimes double or triple your contribution to JFS.

Message from Betsey Greenspan, Big Pal Mentoring Program Coordinator

Betsey Greenspan has been a social worker for the past thirteen years in a variety of settings. She has worked with emotionally disturbed children in foster and residential settings, youth and adults in substance abuse rehabilitation and in a skilled nursing facility. Prior to returning to graduate school for social work, Betsey started her own business called “Healing Spaces,” creating personalized therapeutic interiors for homes and offices. She lives in Boynton Beach with her two dogs and three cats and enjoys ocean swimming, biking and people-watching at the dog park.

Betsey started at JFS in November and is so pleased to be working with mentors and experiencing “how many people are willing to give of themselves of their own volition. It is a beautiful thing.”

Our volunteer “family” is growing larger with the opening of the Shirley & Barton Weisman Delray Community Center. Over 200 prospective volunteers offered their services to act as greeters and receptionists; staff the Blume Café; facilitate a variety of groups including current events, book clubs and Bintel Briefs; teach art, computer skills, knitting and crocheting; and conduct exercise classes.

We are always in need of volunteers to serve as friendly visitors to the frail elderly, drive agency clients in our Kibbitz & Ride program, and mentor children from single parent families in our Community Mentoring Program.

“I am only one, but I am one. I cannot do everything, but I can do something. And I will not let what I cannot do interfere with what I can do.” ...Edward Everett Hale

Message from Howard Horowitz, LCSW Supervisor Chaplaincy & Senior Services Outreach

We are truly blessed to have 29 volunteer parachaplains who service the needs of Jewish residents/patients in 19 facilities in Boca Raton and Delray Beach including hospitals, independent living facilities, assisted living facilities, and nursing homes. Whether they are saying a prayer for a patient in the hospital, leading Shabbat services on Friday afternoon in one of the facilities, or just chatting with a resident/patient, our parachaplains are living and fulfilling the request that we make in our prayers “do not forsake us when we are old.” These interactions truly embody the spirit of Judaism’s goal of being divine-like in our actions (just as the Almighty is kind and compassionate, so must we be kind and compassionate).

If you have 2 to 3 hours a week and would like to bring comfort and often times a smile to a Jewish person in a hospital or facility, we would like you join our group of wonderful parachaplains. There are a number of facilities that have requested services that we are not able to serve without more volunteers. I look forward to hearing from you.

January marked the tenth annual NATIONAL MENTORING MONTH and here at JFS, we’d like to celebrate all the wonderful mentors in our Community Mentoring Program (Big Pal and Grandparenting Programs). Research has shown that mentoring can change the direction of a young person’s life, reduce substance abuse and improve academic performance. Youth development literature states that in order to succeed, youth need caring adult role models. In the JFS Community Mentoring Program, volunteers from our community are matched with children and teens age 3-17.

The roles of a mentor are many and varied, depending upon the specifics of the child’s family situation, age, health and emotional state of the child, school situation and other factors. Among other things, a mentor is a special friend to a child, a positive adult role model, a transmitter of social and cultural values, a confidant, a good listener, a source of encouragement, an entrée to otherwise unavailable experiences, someone who cares, someone who is consistent and dependable and FUN! Why would anyone want to be a mentor? “I came from a home where my parents had a very difficult divorce and I know it is very important to have someone around who can be a positive influence, someone to talk to you, listen to you, teach you things and make you feel good.”

“I am a child of divorce. I know very well what this can do to a child emotionally and psychologically. Single parent households are difficult.”

“I want to give back, help a kid, maybe guide and inspire him or her.”

“Our own grandchildren live far away and we like kids. Giving back is important to us.”

“My own children are basically grown and I feel I could bring friendship to a child.”

The expression “getting more than you give” sums up the experience for most mentors. In fact, research has reported that for mentors, some of the most common positive effects include feelings of accomplishment and creation of networks of volunteers. The Community Mentoring Program offers opportunities throughout the year for mentors and youth to enjoy group activities together as well as continuing education meetings for mentors. The Community Mentoring Program is a non- sectarian program and requires a one-year commitment on the part of both the family and mentor. However, the rewarding experience leads many of our matches to continue for years.

The Shirley & Barton Weisman Delray Community Center opened in October and has been welcoming about 100 visitors and participants per day. The Diamond Club for the 75 plus seniors has been in operation for over 30 years in the Delray area but since coming to the new Center has tripled its members. Our schedule is packed with new classes, lectures, support groups and recreation activities. All of the classes fall under the four general categories of Health and Wellness, Education, Entertainment and Jewish Education.

Risa Demato, the new Site Director for the Center is thrilled to be a part of this exciting time for JFS and the Delray and surrounding area community. “I have met some of the most interesting people from all backgrounds, many of whom are willing to share their life experiences and/or passions with the community as facilitators and instructors at the center. There are retired professors, Holocaust speakers, writers, actors and passionate artists who have been and will be major contributors to the success of the Center. I can’t believe the number of volunteers that want to help at the Center, who go to great lengths to come here and give of their time and exuberance,” Demato says as she beams with joy.

The buzz is in the air and the employees and volunteers are all excited for the coming year as we create a place where one comes to learn, enjoy, laugh and have a nosh and schmooze with friends, both new and old.
