Jib Sheet July 2017
Hello Everyone,
High winds, cold, rain, wet, high seas, more rain, more cold, and higher winds and seas!
OK, so all of May and a good part of June was just plain bad boating weather. There is no way to spin it. We optimists that launched in early May spent almost the entire month going down to the Club and watching our boats bob aimlessly
on their moorings. On the occasional day when the weather broke and we got a chance to do some boating, I had the very strong sense that our boat was very unresponsive to my direc-tives. I think she was motivated by spite for neglecting her all those weeks. Not really sure - I may be reading in to this?
But hey, we are New Englanders, and I'm convinced that three good months of sailing and cruising lie ahead of us. So I hope to see you on the water soon!
Now this spring was not a total wash out. Our social events were fantastic! The Memorial Day Breakfast was excellent, the covered dish dinner was the best ever, and this past Saturday Wolfgang Scholz and his able crew put on a Summer Solstice Dinner that was remarkable!
Looking forward, the first of these three months - July - is shaping up to be a particularly excit-ing time for the Club. On July 1st we have the first ever Firecracker Pursuit Sailboat Race, fol-lowed the Annual Independence Day Cookout, on the 12th the Club is hosting the Veterans Appreciation Day, and on the 15th -16th we will cruise to the South Shore Yacht Club for the shark infested Invasion Weekend. And Oh, I almost forgot, Arts Night is on the 8th.
All these events are really well organized, priced reasonably – some of them are free - and are terrific opportunities to have a great time and meet new members. You should check out the Calendar on our web site or the information in this Jib Sheet and plan to attend one of these great happenings.
Fair Winds,

2017 SWYC House Cleaning Calendar
In order to keep the house and deck “shipshape” and offer a way for members to earn work assessment hours during the season, we’ll be posting a weekly cleaning calendar in the house kitchen after the club opens. Members (full, partner, and associate) can schedule themselves for a week claiming any open week on the calendar. After the weekly cleaning is done, you’ll fill out a work chit and have it signed by the launch driver on duty, and check-off the “cleaning complete” column on the calendar.
At a minimum, the following tasks should be done weekly:
You are free to perform tasks on your schedule, but please do so during non-peak hours – weekdays are best. Avoid weekends at all costs, unless it’s horrible weather.
If anything needs attention (restocking supplies, broken items, etc.) please send an email to [email protected]

Arts Night
Get your creative groove on at Arts Night.
Mark your calendars to hang out at the club the evening of July 8th
, from 6-9pm for Art Night! Our creative members will be displaying their latest works of art, and serving wine and munchies. Guests are welcome and there is no charge to attend.
Many of the artists will have one-of-a-kind works for purchase, so see you there! Here’s a taste of what you can expect to see:
Barbara Lewis designs Eco-friendly jewelry, and loves salvaging the beauty of something that would otherwise be discarded, creating beautiful and unique pieces of jewelry from found items.
Betty Hearne paints in oils, pastel and acrylics, with works evoking summer days on the water, in the garden and exotic locations.
Dave Lewis has been a photographer for 40 years, and his eye is drawn to-ward seascapes and the beauty found in nature.
Elvira Schoenthal uses her sewing machine to make memories from shirts or ties, or any article of clothing you may have. She can make a memorial pillow, or a weighted quilt to help calm a loved one with Alzheimer’s, or even a teddy bear from an infant’s sleeper. If you think it, she can do it!
Faye Corning will be presenting some watercolors and a group of acrylic sea-scapes on seashells.
Janet Merriman paints in watercolors and Brusho and will be showing some originals and prints of her favorite scenes from sailing, in the garden, and under the sea.
Yulia Cameron will be showing her paintings.
Here are just a few of the pieces of art that you can expect to see.

South Shore Yacht Club Invasion
This year, SWYC will invade SSYC on the weekend of July 15th and 16th. The party begins with lunch when we arrive at SSYC’s dock around noon on Saturday . The evening’s festivities typically begin with cocktails around 6pm and dinner at 7pm. Music and dancing will follow. We’ll have breakfast on Sunday morning before we cruise back to SWYC. The price is $40pp, and the theme is Sharks.

US Coast Guard Auxiliary Vessel Safety Check Day
Vessel Safety Check Day at SWYC was June 24th. Although the weather DID NOT CO-OPERATE early in the day, all those members who signed-up and attended the event were given a vessel safety examination.
The purpose of the USCG AUX VSC is to ensure the rec-reational boaters are properly equipped to comply with US Federal regulations and State safety regulations. There is no cost for this service and Is performed by USCGAUX certified examiners. If your boat does not pass the exam, NO report is filed. Why do We do this? In a word, Safety. You are left with the peace of mind that your boat meets minimum safety standards and that in an emergency, you will have the necessary equipment to save lives and summon help.
Boats that pass the examination are awarded a distinctive USCG VSC decal that alerts the Coast Guard, Harbor Patrol, and other law-enforcement agencies that your boat was found to be in full compliance with Federal and state boating laws. Frequently, such agencies will not detain or board boats displaying a current- year decal that are otherwise operating safely.
Any club member who wants to request an exam, may contact CGAUX certified exam-iners Bob or Anne Olenio, or Steve Daly. We would be happy to help and advise you.
Steve Daly
Summer Solstice
Saturday June 24th-the weather was perfect to celebrate the Summer Solstice SWYC-style. Sunshine, a gentle breeze and ocean views!
Chef Wolfgang had his prep crew arrive ready willing and able at 4:30pm. Thanks to Mary and Gabe Rossi, Amy and Guy Vandoren, Rick Hagis, Kathie and Mike Sweeney, Paul and Sue Tomchyshyn, Chris and Ela Sikorska, and Gail and Benrd Rosenfeldt.

Update from Our Fleet Captain
Hello members,
I hope everyone had the opportunity to see the Tall Ships. Despite the foggy morning, it was an awesome event.
The second event is our annual 4th of July sailboat race – to be held on July 1st. This is always a fun event with many of our veteran sailors participating. A sign up sheet is posted at the club. Lots of fun!
In August we will have another sailboat race for Heritage Days – more details will be coming regarding that as well.
The third event is the Veteran’s Appreciation Boating Day scheduled for Wednesday July 12th with a rain date of Wednesday July 26th. This is an important event as we honor some of our local veterans who have served our country. More details and a sign up sheet is posted at the club.
I am looking ahead toward Labor Day weekend with our annual trip to Charlestown Marina. I should have more specifics very soon.
Let’s all enjoy our club and the beautiful weather we have here in New England.
Enjoy and stay safe.

Boats, Floats, Moorings and Harbormaster News
Paul Tomchyshyn captured all of the fun as our photographer at large – be sure to check out our website for all of the great photos. The menu was fabulous – beautiful appetizers, sal-ads, Swedish meatballs, teriyaki beef, lemon mustard chicken, rice, pasta, and of course the famous whole smoked salmons.
Summer Solstice diners gave rave reviews and saved enough room to enjoy black forest cake for desert!
Looking forward to a fun 2017 season.
Cheers,
Sue Tomchyshyn

From the Mooring Field
New members, please inform the Mooring Chairman and Financial Secretary of your mooring number once you receive it. This allows SWYC to quickly notify you of a problem with your boat if we see it. Otherwise, we would have to call the Harbormaster to get the number, which he may not have access to if he is on the boat and it wastes time contacting you.
I see many pennant lines wrapped around their mooring chain. If we have a blow, the chain will chafe the rope and guess who wins? We have seen pennants completely cut by chain. Look at some of the boats with floatation (pool noodles, pipe insulation, etc.) on their pennants and copy them. Floatation must be at the float, not at the boat!!
Lou Schoenthal, Mooring Chairman
2017 Launch Schedule
Beginning Thursday May 18: Launch will run daily from 9am-9pm Jun 17 - Mon Sept 4: Launch will run daily from 8am-10pm Monday Sept 11 - Closing: Launch will run daily from 9am-7:30pm
Launch Guidelines:
Our launch operators are required to take lunch and dinner breaks. Lunch is 1-1:30 and dinner is 7-7:30. Normally there will be no launch service during these break periods. The last launch will leave the float 10 minutes prior to the breaks and before closing. Please respect the operator’s break time by not requesting service during these times.
Per Coast Guard regulations governing the operation of our launches, we are limited to transporting only six passengers at any given time. During busy weekends, holidays and other times of high demand two launches will be in service. The BOG requests that only two crew members per boat be transported during peak times and that members pick up their remaining crew and guests at the floats. At these times the outboard side of the main float will be reserved for loading and unloading passengers only. The BOG recognizes that during low tide some boats may not be able to use the float. If this is the case, the re-maining crew and guests will be transported during subsequent launch trips two at a time.
Safety
No fuel, gas, diesel or propane may be transported on the launch.
The launch operator is in total command of the launch.
In order for the launch operator to have unobstructed vision all passengers are to remain seat-ed at all times while the launch is underway.
Passengers are to assist the launch operator only if requested.
The launch will cease operation for 30 minutes once thunder/lightning is observed and return to operation 30 minutes after the last thunder/lightning.
During inclement weather members are advised to call the club to ensure the launch is operat-ing.
http://www.SWYC.com Page 7 July 2017
All members are encouraged to be extra vigilant while underway in the mooring area as inflata-bles, kayaks, paddleboards and other small craft frequently pass through and can suddenly emerge undetected from behind a larger moored vessel.
Tipping
While tipping is not required, it is encouraged. Launch operators are paid minimum wage and depend on tips in order to make a decent wage. Tipping may be considered a “user fee system” whereby those who use the service pay for it.
$1 per trip is adequate
$2 per trip is appreciated
$3 per trip the operators will love you
Problems with Operators
Please do not address any problems or issues directly with the launch operators. Should an issue arise, please call me at (978) 741-1501 (h) or (978) 766-0864 (c), or address your con-cerns with any club officer.
I hope you all have a fun and safe boating season and enjoy all of what our club has to offer.
John Regan, Launch Chairman
Sandy Point Sailing
Sandy Point Sailing Association is a youth (and adult) sailing school sponsored by Salem Wil-lows and Jubilee Yacht Clubs. Although sponsored by these clubs, the program is open to anyone including a special age-appropriate "teen" learn to sail program. Programs run for two weeks starting on June 26th and culminating with the Regatta on August 19th.
Check out sandypointsailing.org for more information on the program. Let's get the children out on the water!
Misery Island Mooring
The SWYC mooring at Misery Island is ready for the season. It should accommodate any size boat being a 5000lb concrete block. It is at lat/long 42.33.150N - 70.47.983W (to the right of Cocktail Cove, approx. 1/2 way to the West end of Misery Island, facing West Beach). Look for a 24 inch white ball labeled Y-23 on one side and SWYC on the other side. There is a large gal-vanized pear link on top of the ball to easily pass a dock line through for tying up.
This mooring is available to members on a first come first served basis. If there is another boat on the mooring and you want to use it, you may ask the boater if he/she is a member of SWYC. If the answer is NO, you may ask them politely to leave. Note there are also several other moor-ings labeled BHD at the island for public use as dictated by the Beverly Harbormaster Depart-ment, (BHD). These are also available on a first come first serve basis but you may not ask any-one to leave!

Club Etiquette
Please secure all nine windows, three doors, and turn off all lights if you lock up.
Please don’t leave any trash outside in the park. Seagulls will attack un-covered trash, leaving a pile of empty adult beverage bottles. Please put all your trash in the barrels provided inside the gate.
Please don’t try to help the launch driver by pushing off unless he/she asks you to do so. We had a member almost go in the drink while standing on the gunnel of the launch, holding onto the rail and pushing off with his foot. The driver will frequently ask for help if he or she needs it.
Always keep one hand (or preferably both) free to hold the rail on the launch or a solid part of the boat. If you have a lot of gear, send one per-son across first and then pass the gear.
Please leave the clubhouse a little cleaner than you found it. Remove your dirty dishes from the deck and wash them, and cover the grills if they’re cool. Clean dishes are OK to leave in the rack to air dry. If you use the shower, please wipe it down. If you drop something on the floor, please use a paper towel, broom or mop to clean it up.
Please do not bring your vehicle into the park unless you are on official club business prepping for a function/delivering lumber etc. Use the many carts to bring your gear to the club.
