Prevention of marine pollution[14.1] By 2025, prevent and significantly reduce marine pollution of all kinds, in particular from land-based activities, including marine debris and nutrient pollution

Preventive measures of water pollution Sewerage system improvement → POMSSUP (Papua New Guinea) Solid waste management → J-PRISM phase2(9 PICs)

Improvement of legal frameworks Institutional capacity strengthening and human resource development Improvement of pollution control facilities (sewage treatment facility,

Waste treatment facility, and final waste disposal sites, etc.)

a practical system of mutual check-and-balance and collaboration among public and private sectors, and local residents will be established with due considerations of specific contexts of developing countries.

Japan’s technology and know-how on the pollution prevention measures will be utilized through collaboration with Japanese local governments and private enterprises.

Conservation of ecosystems[14.2] By 2020, sustainably manage and protect marine and coastal ecosystems to avoid significant adverse impacts, including by strengthening their resilience, and take action for their restoration in order to achieve healthy and productive oceans

[14.5] By 2020, conserve at least 10 per cent of coastal and marine areas, consistent with national and international law and based on the best available scientific information

Management of marine protected areas Conservation of coral reefs and other vulnerable

ecosystems → several projects with Palau International Coral Reef Center

Institutional development for co-management by all steak holders Capacity strengthening for human resource development Advisory service on improvement of the livelihoods of coastal

communities

• Management of coastal fisheries by co-management with alternative livelihood options → Grace of the Sea project in Vanuatu, etc.

• Conservation of critical habitats of coastal ecosystems such as tidal flats/wetlands, seagrass beds and coral reefs

• Assessment of important local fisheries resources, Management of straddling and highly migratory species (e.g. skipjack and tuna) and Measures against illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing by human resource development → IUU technical training (tentative)

• Aquaculture promotion → construction of Palau Mariculture Demonstration Center

• Value chain development by close collaboration with the private sector.

Management of fisheries resourceS[14.4] By 2020, effectively regulate harvesting and end overfishing, illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing and destructive fishing practices and implement science-based management plans, in order to restore fish stocks in the shortest time feasible, at least to levels that can produce maximum sustainable yield as determined by their biological characteristicsBoost economic benefits and promote small-scale artisanal fishers[14.7] By 2030, increase the economic benefits to small island developing States and least developed countries from the sustainable use of marine resources, including through sustainable management of fisheries, aquaculture and tourism[14.8] Provide access for small-scale artisanal fishers to marine resources and markets

Title of the ProjectProject for Promotion of Grace of the Sea in the Coastal Villages (Phase III)

Overall Goal Integrated Community-based Coastal Resource Management (CB-CRM)

approaches are widely extended in Vanuatu as official standard approach for promoting coastal resource management.

Integrated CB-CRM approach is widely promoted in the Pacific region.

Project PurposeIntegrated CB-CRM approach developed by the Project is practiced throughout the country as well as in neighboring countries within the Melanesian region.

Output 1: Applicability and practicability of integrated CB-CRM approach are strengthened.Output 2: Knowledge and experiences of integrated CB-CRM approach are synthesized and standardized as national training programmes for its effective promotion.Output 3: Integrated CB-CRM approach is introduced through national training programmes as well as technical exchange with neighboring countries within the Melanesian region.
