he world of tomorrow belongs to the young people of today. They are the agents of change, and music is

one of their most powerful and dedicated means, a true universal language of expression.

Since 1945, Jeunesses Musicales International (JMI) has been ‘Making a Difference through Music’, bridging

social, geographical and cultural divides to create an international platform for intercultural dialogue, learning

and understanding.

JMI is the world’s largest youth and music network, developing demand-driven programs to empower youth

on local, national and international levels. JMI works to empire the world’s young people with opportunities

to become musicians and advocates for quality formal and non-formal music education for young people,

JMI champions greater access to music learning for young audiences. Music is an important tool for building

sustainable human development cooperation, as music brings people together, breaks down barriers, creates

platforms for dialogue and boosts creative potential.

It’s often stated that “if you don’t go forwards you are actually moving backwards“ but,

to be able to map out the way ahead, you evidently need to know where you have been.

JMI has a respectful age and a great history, of which we are all really very proud. When

looking at our programs and activities and at the life and structure of our network, a lot

has changed during the past decades. And will continue to keep on changing.

Today’s communication and exchange is certainly very much different to when JMI erupted in the 40-ties and

50-ties. If you take a gander across JMI’s multitude of online social platforms and websites, you are suddenly

able to visualize what making a difference through music really means. That it is far more than just a slogan,

that it is the physical manifestation of a commitment made by thousands of people around the globe who truly

believe in the power of music in shaping the lives of young people for the better.

That being said, it is during these trying times of political change and economic uncertainty that we need

to strive even harder to maintain support for culture as a humanitarian priority. It is a shared responsibility

to preserve our cultural heritage and to foster future creativity and innovation amongst the youth. Let this

message serve as a call to all who read it to double your enthusiasm, your activities and your impact. To, no

matter your social and economic conditions, listen to the voice of the young people and amplify it through

song and sound so that it may play its part in the reshaping of a brighter globally connected future.

A message from the President

Sincerely Yours,Per Ekedahl

from around the world to share their traditions and customs through a peer-to-peer based learning

model that is founded on the principles of intercultural dialogue, learning, friendship and exchange. Through

a combination of jam sessions, seminars, and performances at some of the biggest folk music festivals in

In 2011, seven Ethnos were organised in Belgium

(Flanders), Croatia, Denmark, Estonia, France,

Slovenia and Sweden.

On the 7th of March Ethno - The New Spirit of World

Music brochure was launched in Brussels (Belgium)

featuring a performance by Ethno Flanders.

Between the 28th March and the 1st of April, Ethno

France organized a seminar to further develop

the Ethno concept. The event brought together 35

Ethno organizers, volunteers and musicians for ten

days.

Ethno On The Road brought back to Sweden six of

its most talented young Ethno participants for a

series of school concerts between the 4th and 15th

of October.

Ethno Australia took place for the first time in

December gathering 46 musicians from the

Southern hemisphere, Asia and Europe.

Ethno is the most fun possible to have in a week for a young musician. It also is the most mind-expanding and educational week, and the most tiring! I would highly recommend this opportunity to mix with people from diverse cultures from all over the world, to make friends and understand music from far away.

In Brussels we got to experience a lot of things. New friends from different countries in Europe, new musical influences and a whole weekend of fun. When it became clear that we were the winners of Imagine Festival 2011 all the participants were dancing when we played our songs again, it showed us how ‘not competitive’ this festival is, it’s just good fun with a lot of good music and nice people. To win Imagine can’t be compared to anything else. The opportunities and experiences it has given us are many. This summer we are going to do some gigs in Mozambique, Belgium, Croatia and in the autumn in Cyprus! Later we are also going to record our first album. All this thanks to Imagine.

reated in 1949 The Jeunesses Musicales World Orchestra (JMWO), is the first ever orchestra formed

exclusively by young musicians selected from more than 45 countries worldwide. An outstanding

example of global cooperation, the JMWO has partnered with key international orchestras and worked with

top class young musicians, soloists and conductors including Zubin Mehta, Leonard Bernstein, Charles Dutoit,

Yakov Kreizberg and Kurt Masur. To date, the orchestra has toured over 80 cities from 30 countries in the

most prestigious venues and at high profile events, bringing together over 6,000 musicians and touching a

combined audience of more than 2 million people.

The JMWO was bestowed the title of UNESCO Artist for Peace in 1997. Following the adoption of the new

artistic concept by the JMI AGA in Tanzania 2010, JMI has, with the full support and cooperation of JM

Germany, established a partnership with the Berlin Philharmoniker and formed the JMWO Association based

in Berlin. After a highly successful run of 60 years, JMI has taken up the challenge to redesign an artistic

concept that defines a new mission for the JMWO in order to take back its place in the classical music spotlight

in 2014.
