John Glenn:from Mercury to Space Shuttle
Thirty-six years ago John Glenn made history when hestrapped himself into a nine-by-seven-foot capsule atopan experimental rocket and became the first Americanto orbit the Earth. Unlike most astronauts, he never gotthe opportunity for a second flight.
Recently he asked NASA if he could fly again toconduct space-based research on aging, but only if hemet the agency's physical and mental requirements.
NASA Administrator Daniel S. Goldin responded bytelling the public that "Not only is John Glenn a Marinetest pilot, an astronaut, and the first American to orbitthe Earth, he brings a unique blend of experience toNASA. He has flight. operational, and policyexperience. He is part of the NASA family, anAmerican hero, and he has the right stuff for thismission."
Since aging and space flight share a number of similarphysiological responses, the study of space flight mayprovide a model system to help scientists interested inunderstanding aging. Some of these similarities includebone and musc1e loss, balance disorders, and sleepdisturbances.
Before NASA made the decision to fly Glenn, thesenator underwent a battery of medical tests conductedby NASA physicians and by independent consultants. They an found him medically qualified for space flight.According to NASA flight surgeons, Glenn's fitnesslevel is excellent.
"We have 42 years of medical history on Senator Glennand we were able to perform an exhaustive medicalevaluation," said Dr. Denise Baisden, a NASA flightsurgeon. "He is medically qualified to fly."
