John Bapst students come from more than thirty Maine towns and many foreign countries. What they have in common is a genuine desire to be part of a community of learners.

Working with experienced counselors, students put together a schedule that reflects who they are as individuals. In the junior and senior years, the same counselors provide personalized guidance with the college application process.

The Academic Program

Readiness for globalization means speaking a language other than your own. John Bapst offers four-year programs in Chinese, Spanish, French, and Latin. Each year some of the school’s most successful students practice what they’ve learned in class on school-sponsored trips or independently through travel and homestays abroad.

Reading, Writing, Thinking, and Inspiration

Ready to stretch your mind? The John Bapst English Department invites you to an inspiring conversation with writers like Homer, Shakespeare, Austen, and Hemingway. You’ll meet important contemporary voices, too, as you develop the reading and thinking skills you need to become a good writer.

In the Social Sciences Department, the curriculum is the world. From foundation courses in World and U.S. history, students go on to electives in economics, human geography, political science, European history, sociology, and anthropology.

Outstanding STEM Programs

The STEM fields – science, technology, engineering, and mathematics – are the basis for many of the world’s most important steps forward. Every John Bapst student receives a strong math-science foundation. Students take math every year, reaching trigonometry, pre-calculus, AP Statistics, AP Calculus BC, or beyond.

The school’s laboratory sciences program is knowledge-intensive and hands-on. In biology, chemistry, and physics, you’ll come to understand the natural world. AP courses are offered in all three subjects, along with electives in environmental science, anatomy, oceanography, and astronomy. Since 2006, four John Bapst students and teachers have been recognized by Siemens and the College Board as tops in the state in science and mathematics. Through its programming courses, student-led Technology Team, and elective courses, John Bapst is preparing the next generation of IT innovators and creative problem-solvers. In AP Computer Science, electives, and clubs, students learn programming, graphic design, and robotics.

Arts: In the Spotlight

The creative spirit is alive at John Bapst. Whether you’re a musician, a visual artist, a theater person, or a storyteller, there’s something for you: a group to join, a class to take, a performance to rehearse for.

From the Music Wing come the sounds of the 100-member Concert Band, the 70-member Concert Choir, and the 25-member Chamber Ensemble. The Jazz Band is a 1st-place regional winner. John Bapst singers have produced their own albums, performed in concert, and even sung at Carnegie Hall. Every seven days students perform at the beginning of school assemblies.

John Bapst visual art students display their talents in two annual student art shows. Each year students go on to attend art schools or major in art at the university level. Drawing, painting, photography, ceramics, sculpture, printmaking, history of art, and history of film – all of these areas spark student exploration and self-expression. You just might surprise yourself with a talent you didn’t know you had.

All the world’s a stage at John Bapst when the Fall Play and Spring Musical go into production. Under the direction of talented faculty, students learn to act, sing, dance, build sets, run lights and sound, make costumes, and do makeup. The musical is accompanied by a pit band of John Bapst’s own students, with more than a hundred students involved in a single production.

Athletics: A Winning Tradition

At John Bapst, 70% of the student body is involved in one or more of the 16 interscholastic sports offered. Sports promote growth in many areas as students get involved, get in shape, learn what it means to play a key role on a team, and test themselves. Expect to see enthusiastic crowds cheering at John Bapst games and matches, because this is a school with a proud tradition of competition and sportsmanship. Recent regional and state championships in football, cheering, ice hockey, track, and other sports reflect the passion and talents of athletes and coaches.High school isn’t too late to try your hand at a new sport. Each year, first-time students join golf, field hockey, swimming, skiing, and other sports, looking for that rewarding combination of individual improvement and team spirit. Highlights of the school’s Intramural Program include annual tournaments in basketball, badminton, and ping-pong, with students and faculty forming teams.

English for International Students The international student’s goal is to gain advanced proficiency in English. At John Bapst, that’s our goal, too. John Bapst is an immersion school. Students must be at the intermediate level or above in English to gain admission. International students take English and history classes alongside American students, which speeds up language learning and the process of making friends with native speakers. Depending on their level, international students may take a second English class daily – an ESL support class with lessons in vocabulary, grammar, and pronunciation. Preparation for TOEFL, SAT, and AP is offered at no extra cost.

At John Bapst, your English language skills will improve with the help of daily opportunities to practice with teachers, students, and others. In the evening, houseparents and students who are native speakers provide extra help with homework.

Residential Life Boarding school students transition to college life with remarkable ease. Making new friends, managing your own time, keeping your room organized – in each of these areas you get a head start in John Bapst’s boarding program.

Boarding ProgramAt John Bapst, your new home is just a short walk from the school’s main building. The residence halls for girls and for boys are located in Bangor’s Broadway Historic District. They combine attractive 19th- and 20th-century architecture with contemporary conveniences like high-speed wireless internet.

Living with students are John Bapst faculty and staff. Houseparents know the school’s academic program and offer students an open-door policy for help with homework or just for the chance to have a conversation about how it’s going at school.

On weekends in the Bangor area there’s always plenty to do with your friends, from shopping and restaurants to movies and concerts, including many opportunities within walking distance of campus.

Homestay ProgramThe John Bapst Homestay Program is designed for international students who would like the experience of living with an American family – in most cases, a faculty member or parents of a local student. The Homestay Program is another great way to speed up language acquisition.

John Bapst ScholarsJohn Bapst Scholars serve as student ambassadors in the dormitories. Most come from Maine towns beyond Bangor’s orbit, where a daily commute to and from school would be too long. Students who would like to experience dorm life as a way of preparing for college are encouraged to apply to be John Bapst Scholars.

Where Is John Bapst? John Bapst is nestled in an historic residential neighborhood of Bangor, Maine. Bangor offers the safety of a small city with the amenities of a larger metropolitan area. Bangor International Airport is only ten minutes away.

We should probably tell you that Maine’s motto is “The Way Life Should Be.” With its rocky beaches, picturesque villages, and scenic mountains, Maine is one of America’s most beautiful states.

The Bangor area boasts diverse restaurants, museums, a city symphony, theaters, and shopping. Fifteen minutes from school is the University of Maine. The Appalachian Trail and Maine’s world-famous Acadia National Park are about an hour away. In the winter, downhill skiing and cross-country skiing are available.

Weekend and vacation trips take students to Portland, Boston, New York, Quebec, and other exciting destinations for recreation, culture, and college visits. John Bapst students enjoy an ideal four-season region for learning and living.
