Current Research Program

Technology. Civil Society, Advocacy and Public Participation: I have studied the impact of high technology on social change organizations and efforts for the past twenty years. My earlier studies helped established the field and some are still cited today. I have endeavored to be a thought leader in this part of the field. My research examines practice techniques, adoption of these techniques by advocacy groups working on social policy issues and the emerging context of advocacy practice with technology (particularly e-government and e-democracy). I have conducted a number of interrelated theory testing studies of this phenomenon, using a wide range of empirical methodologies. I also have secondary areas in the cognate fields of nonprofit informatics, e-government and social welfare policy in an information society. I am currently working on the following issues: 1) Determinants of On-line Transparency in the American States 2) Nonprofit Organizations use of E-Government Information 3) On-line Organizing Strategies of Political Groups and 4) Technology-assisted Leaderless Organizations.

John G. McNutt Curriculum Vitae Revised 10/4/2016 Page 7

Future Plans: My forthcoming directions include (1) additional examination of the context of electronic advocacy and (2) experiments into the effectiveness of electronic advocacy interventions (3) continued exploration into the adoption of advocacy technology, particularly by organizations involved in policy-work for children. Over the years, I have involved colleagues, students and former students and community partners in my research. I have constantly crossed institutional, disciplinary and national boundaries in conducting my research and selecting research collaborators. I have successful mentored new scholars in this area, many who now have their own research programs. PhD Dissertation Committees, Role and Year Completed Completed Dissertations
