THE GOOD NEWSREFLECTION FROM OUR YOUTH MINISTER

First, on behalf of Fr. Durkee, Deacon Steve, and the RCIA team, we would like to welcome our newest Catholic adults who received their Sacraments of Initiation in a private Mass held for them and their families last week. Please join me in praying for them by name: Tonya Coleman, David Tucker, Brandy Crouch, Ann Binnie, and Alex Haney. Under normal circumstances this would have occurred at the Easter Vigil, however churches were closed then due to the Virus, and so we were granted permission to hold this most special occasion sometime after re-opening. To these folks we say thank you – thank you for your yes to Christ and His Holy Church. May God continue to watch over and protect you always!

They say repetition is the “mother of all learning.” God must be a fan of this saying. He consistently and repeatedly offers us his promises, his love, and his kindness even when we fail to respond. It seems then that God wants us to take some things to heart. Right now, there is a lot of anxiety around the starting of school and all the decisions around re-opening again as normally and safe as possible; with the unknown comes fear and stress but St. Paul confidently reminds us that nothing can separate us from the love of God in Jesus. This is something worth repeating to ourselves. Suffering in all its many forms (especially now), however awful, will not come between God and us. That is good news worth sharing!

Sharing the good news gives us opportunities to build up the Kingdom of God through action. Today, we hear the story of Jesus performing one of the most familiar miracles - multiplying five loaves and two fish to feed the hungry crowd. Initially Jesus wanted to be alone after learning of the death of his friend and cousin, John, but (this is the key piece of this Gospel) his heart was so moved by compassion for the people that he put himself aside to serve them in their moment of desperation. We too can act like Christ when we put down our sufferings and turn in charity toward others. This allows us to shift satisfying our own needs and desires to providing for our neighbor – something that is certainly a challenge in the consumerism culture we live in where the focus remains on “I.” Let us pray for continued healing in our country and world, and for an end to all suffering.

Peace be with all of you.Steve D

PRO-LIFE NEWS

“We thank you, heroic mothers, for your invincible love! We thank you for your intrepid trust in God and in his love. We thank you for the sacrifice of your life” (EV 86).Pope Saint John Paul II, Evangelium vitae © 1995, Libreria Editrice Vaticana. Used with permission. All rights reserved.

As Catholics, we have a long tradition of engagement in the political process as a means of putting our faith into action. We are called to bring the best of ourselves and our faith to the public square – and yet today, many shy away from such involvement because our national and local conversations are filled with vitriol and harsh language, often directed at people themselves.

When personal attacks replace honest debate, no one wins. This kind of attack, no matter the reason, only serves to further divide our communities. As Catholics, we must model a better way. We invite you to join the Civilize It campaign by taking the pledge below as a way to promote civility, love our neighbors, and build community.

Civilize It is about making room in your heart for those with whom you disagree. We are called to recognize that each one of us is a beloved child of God and to respond in love to that reality. Civilize It is a non-partisan call to focus on the dignity of all people, even when we disagree, and to put faith in action by bearing witness to a better way forward.

Take the pledge as an individual, family, or community. Anyone and everyone can commit together to honoring human dignity through civil conversation at: https://www.wearesaltandlight.org/civilize-it.

ASSUMPTION OF MARY NOVENAAUGUST 6-14

The Assumption of the Virgin,Bergognone (Ambrogio di Stefano da Fossano). Used with permission.www.lacma.org

Mary, Queen Assumed into Heaven, I rejoice that after years of heroic martyrdom on earth, you have at last been taken to the throne prepared for you in heaven by the Holy Trinity.Lift my heart with you in the glory of your Assumption above the dreadful touch of sin and impurity. Teach me how small earth becomes when viewed from heaven.Make me realize that death is the triumphant gate through which I shall pass to your Son, and that someday my body shall rejoin my soul in the unending bliss of heaven. From this earth, over which I tread as a pilgrim, I look to you for help. I ask

for this favor: (Mention your request). When my hour of death has come, lead me safely to the presence of Jesus to enjoy the vision of my God for all eternity together with you.

Amen

AN INVITATION TO MISSION From Mission Cooperative Missionary Sr. Dorothy Fabritze, MSC

“Do not be afraid, I am with you” was the courage of our Sisters - The Missionary Sisters of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus (MSC) - who entered apartheid-ravaged Namibia in 1927 where to this day they continue to minister to youth, women and the underprivileged in the fields of health, education, pastoral work, social work and administration. In fact, we MSC Sisters are doing just this in 21 countries in which we currently serve. We have established firm foundations on which indigenous religious women and priests can continue to build so that all people can know and grow spiritually in the Heart of God.

An Invitation to Mission Today’s spiritual reality for the people in the village of Omakuva in northern Namibia is that they are served once a month by the priest from the nearest mission station which is approximately 20 miles away. Seeking to fill this gap in services, MSC Sisters will build a house and hall in this village to provide spiritual programs and activities that will meet various needs of the people, especially the Namibian youth. Poor and unemployed, the youth lack the spiritual, moral, emotional, social and educational advantages given to others in our world. By focusing our efforts on the young adults, we can make an impact on the whole of the population and answer the urgent need to maintain the values and morals of the Catholic Church at Omakuva village.

In order to complete projects such as this in Namibia and in neighboring Angola where we will build a school, we need your financial support. Your donations will enable our young religious women to be educated in the needed fields of education, health care, and social work. Your dollars will enable us to house our Sisters and to build a hall which in turn will change the lives of the Namibian youth. Your donation will make a concrete difference to people around the world who need us to care and to act as the Heart of God for them. With your support, the MSC Sisters, will continue to “not be afraid. [For] God is with us always.”
