Rugby 2019 The 1st XV played WHHS at WHHS on Saturday and were ready for a good hard local derby. Both the sides have a young look to the teams and are building for the season ahead. JPC Started well and went 5 – 0 up with a great forwards try. JPC had the game at their feet but then took the foot off the throttle and let WHHS get back in the game. WHHS scored two quick tries and they took that confidence into half time leading 14 – 5 and were looking like they were going to run away with the victory. The JPC coaches gave an abrupt and direct half time speech which had all the players on notice. The JPC team came out with different intentions and started to play their game and took it to the WHHS team. The passion and intent improved and they outscored WHHS by 26 – 5 in the second half. The end result was a very good 31 – 19 win over WHHS. Massive game for the player of the day Jack Dowd, full of energy and leading from the front. Sam Lennie had his bustling runs back on track and was menacing with the ball in hand. The U14’s had a tough day in the office against Trident. The final score was 40 – 15 win to Trident however the coaches are seeing progress within the team. There were a number of good performances on the field culminating with Harry earning Player of the Day. The referee commended the captain Logan for the manner that he played the game. The learnings from this game will be taken on board and will be worked on in the coming weeks. Photos of our achievers will be in the newsletter next week.

JPC COLLECTING FOOD FOR THE POOR IN ROTORUA This term we begin, as a school community, to collect food for the poor in Rotorua, which will be donated to the SVDP Food Bank where volunteers based at St Mary's Catholic Church, deliver food parcels to needy families.

This term is the lead in to winter, when poorer families will begin to have higher power accounts as heating puts pressure on their finances which are already stretched.

Please, would you as families and students of JPC, donate non perishable food items to the food bank, other than baked beans and spaghetti which they seem to get more of through the Masses offerings. We try to donate things like tinned meal foods, spreads, biscuits, crackers, drink sachets, heat and eat meals in packets etc All food items donated earn 20 house points per item or 100 house points per 4 items. I hope you can help the Food Bank.

Kia ora from the Counsellors Here is some feedback on the recent Community Mental Health Survey which you were invited to

participate in. We received 277 responses from the community, a pleasing uptake for us considering

many families have more than one child in the school.

Some key findings are as follows:

77.6% of respondents thought that their child(ren)'s mental health today is the same or better than

one year ago.

43.6% of respondents noticed an increase in a particular mental health concern/s in the past year

The top 3 concerns noted were: first – Anxiety, second - Confidence issues, third equal -

Internet/technology / Feeling down.

Suggestions for how JPC could further support students’ mental well-being included:

1. Teach strategies for mental health

2. Clearer communication between school and home

3. School culture – encourage greater tolerance, more positive and caring, further

develop peer relationships

4. School Counsellors - whole family sessions, more informal, confidential, provide drop in

service

Parents/caregivers indicated that talking to family would be their first choice in seeking help for

their child regarding mental health concerns, second – GP, third – talk to a friend, fourth – school

counsellor, fifth – outside counsellor.

A child not wanting help sought, and privacy concerns, featured strongly as barriers to help being

sought by parents for young people, while nearly 20% of respondents said that nothing would

stop them from seeking help for their child.

98.7% of respondents said that they would be supportive of JPC providing their children

with strategies to support mental health and well-being.

A full summary of findings from this survey is attached to this email as a report.

A most significant finding in this community survey, evident also in both student and staff survey

responses, is the overwhelming support for programmes of learning and other initiatives around mental

well-being. Following on from this, our intention is to implement various initiatives based on what is

feasible and a best fit for our students, staff and wider JPC community. To enable long term, positive and

authentic change, this will evolve in a measured and carefully considered approach. We will keep you

informed over the course of this year and beyond about programmes of learning, guest speakers,

workshops for students and other initiatives to be implemented in support of student mental well-being. Nga mihi.
