A LETTER from the PRINCIPAL John McCarthy

Dear Friends of JPII:

This past year was truly a year like no other. A year that was moving ahead with such promise for our future was dramatically altered as the worldwide pandemic forced our teachers, students, and planning into a virtual world. Nevertheless, we persevered through it all to emerge stronger and more determined than ever to achieve the dream born many years ago to provide a high-quality, Catholic education to families of the Lowcountry. The challenges are many, but with the support of our friends and benefactors, we are well on our way to achieving this goal.

Much was accomplished last year to advance the quality of our academic program and improve the financial viability of the school. An ambitious strategic plan was developed to guide school planning through 2025. Our commitment to improving academic offerings, particularly in the areas of STEM, have positioned us as a leader in innovation among schools in our region. We are the only school in South Carolina to offer nine pre-AP courses. We have added Project Lead the Way courses in engineering, computer science, and biomedical science, providing cutting edge, project-based learning opportunities to our students. We have added the first course in a two-course sequence allowing students to earn the prestigious AP Capstone Diploma.

Our school enrollment is now approaching capacity and we are envisioning the future expansion of the campus through a new STEAM Innovation Center and expanded athletic facilities. The Master Plan has been revised and the visioning completed to ensure that JPII is positioned to meet future enrollment growth and emerge as the premier school of choice in the Lowcountry.

With the per-pupil cost approaching $15,000 per year, your help is needed now more than ever to keep the school affordable for those it was built to serve. Our Warrior Fund is designed to bridge the gap between affordability and the high-quality education we offer. Any amount of gift, no matter how large or small, is greatly appreciated by all of us at JPII and will make a direct and significant impact on the students we serve. We thank our Golden Circle Donors listed on this page who were instrumental in the birth of our school, and we look forward to partnering with them and our growing list of supporters to build the JPII of the future. Please prayerfully consider joining us in our vision.

Dear Supporters of John Paul II Catholic School,

Thank you!

On behalf of our school community, let me personally thank all the families and community members who, throughout the previous years, have taken a significant role in engaging in our school’s success. Gifts have come in the form of monetary donations, gifts-in-kind, and the gift of time by volunteering.

Thank you to the JPII staff, who had 100% participation in contributing to the annual fund – the third straight year, with a significant dollar-for-dollar increase.

JPII family participation actually dropped to 25% from above 30%. This is one area our community giving needs improvement. As Mr. McCarthy has stated numerous times, no family pays the actual costs it takes to educate their child. So parent participation should be at 100%.

As a small Catholic school, our mission is large. JPII is a school that prides itself in celebrating our Catholic traditions while welcoming all faiths. We have high expectations in academics and provide our students with innovative learning environments.

This past year, the contributions by families listed on the following pages have made it possible for JPII to become the preeminent private school of choice for families of the Lowcountry. Through their donations, a large part of our student body is able to receive tuition assistance. Warrior

Fund monies have also gone to the new STEAM Innovation and Design Center, technology, professional development, and athletics; robotics has grown and even excelled due to your kindness; the school “curb appeal” has flourished with enhanced landscaping, and the Paving the Way Campaign has brought the campus to a new level aesthetically. Donations have been used to fund our annual trip to Washington, DC for the March for Life; for the installation of a new sound system which complements the activities in the Athletic Center, such as Mass and sporting events; and for the purchase of a truck that has made work easier for our facilities department. A few of the improvements have been highlighted on the next page.

I ask our community to stay committed to helping in our mission. We are far from finished with the plan we have developed for our future. Thank you for continuing to be a part of it.

Nolite Timere,

Brian Quinty Director of Development

At JPII our mission

is LARGE!

TUITION ASSISTANCEWhen John Paul II Catholic School was just an idea over ten years ago, the founders were passionate the school should be accessible to all students seeking a Catholic education. Since then, our school has worked at keeping that promise with the help of our generous donors.

This year, over $375,000 of tuition assistance

has been allocated to 75 students.

Spring Island

DONATIONSTotal Pledges and Giving – $239,500.00

Early in the 2019-2020 school year, JPII was approached by Spring Island resident John Cooney about the possibility of a group of Spring Island families donating funds to support the growing STEM program at our school. A restricted fundraising campaign was established and to date we have received almost $250,000 in donations and pledges. JPII will also be applying for a matching grant that could add another $250,000 over five years.

These funds will be used for:

• Science equipment and supplies

• New Project Lead the Way courses such as Medical Detectives, Flight and Space, Principles of Engineering, Cybersecurity, AP Computer Science, and Human Body Systems

• Training for teachers in project-based learning

• Funding a study to design a STEAM Innovation and Design Center

• Conversion of two classrooms into a futuristic makerspace complete with high-tech tools such as 3D printers, a laser cutter, a kiln, and virtual reality software

The PROMISE

Scholarship

Keeping JPII affordable for all families of the Lowcountry has been both a challenge and a commitment for us. Due to our relatively small size and the expansive program we offer, the per-student cost of a JPII education is almost $15,000 per year. At full cost, a JPII education would be out of the realm of possibility for many if it were not for the generous donors to our Warrior Fund and the support of our parishes and Diocese of Charleston. Almost $400,000 in financial assistance is provided annually to ensure the school remains affordable to all.

While we believe every family should pay a minimum amount toward their child’s education, sometimes this minimum is still too much. Therefore, JPII has created the Promise Scholarship, a full-tuition scholarship for students of high financial need who show tremendous promise. We are looking for students who are deeply rooted in their Christian faith and who possess gifts in the areas of academics and athletics or the arts. In other words, we are looking for students who will make a difference in JPII as JPII makes a difference in them.

To make the JPII Promise Scholarship a reality, we need the help of donors committed to making a difference in the life of one of these promising students. It works this way: a donor promises to contribute one-half of the full tuition cost, or approximately $7,000 per year depending on the grade, and the JPII Tuition Assistance Fund will match the other $7,000 allowing the student to attend JPII at no cost. Should the student need transportation, that cost will also be split between the donor and the school, or approximately $500 each. The donor must commit to this scholarship for the student’s entire career at JPII. To date, two Promise Scholarship donors have stepped forward, and we hope to grow this number to a total of twelve over the next few years. Will you be the next to change the life of a promising student?

CASH, CHECKS, CREDIT CARDS – The simplest ways to support JPII: • Please make checks payable to John Paul II Catholic School and mail to 4211 N

Okatie Hwy, Ridgeland, SC 29936 • For online giving please click on the “Donate Now” button on the school website

under Support JPII.

STOCK SECURITIES – For more information regarding the donation of stock to JPII please visit the Diocese of Charleston website.

BEQUESTS AND PLANNED GIVING – For more information regarding bequests and planned giving for JPII please visit the Diocese of Charleston page at http://sccatholic.org/opportunities-your-planned-gift.

GIFTS IN KIND – These non-cash gifts include items that the school needs and uses like paper, furniture, office supplies, or printing services, or if a business can help the school in any other way.

RETIREMENT PLAN ASSETS – To implement your wishes, simply advise the plan administrator of your decision and sign whatever form is required. For an IRA or Keogh plan you administer personally, notify the custodian in writing, and keep a copy with your valuable papers. • Naming JPII the primary beneficiary avoids all income and estate taxes. • Partial savings when you give us a specific amount before giving family the remainder. • Naming JPII the contingent beneficiary allows for greater flexibility. • Donating retirement plan assets could be the most cost-effective gift you can make.

REAL ESTATE – A charitable contribution of real estate to JPII, whether it’s your personal residence, a vacation home, a farm, commercial real estate, or vacant land will give you numerous advantages. • Income tax charitable deduction for the full fair market value. • Avoidance of tax on the property’s appreciation. • No hassle from trying to sell the property. • No gift tax, plus a reduction of your taxable estate.

CORPORATE MATCHING PROGRAM – Corporate matching gifts are a great way for donors, parents, and friends to maximize personal contributions to JPII and increase the impact of their gift. By taking advantage of a company’s matching gift benefit, you may be able to double or even triple the amount of a contribution. Each company has its own guidelines for employees, spouses, retirees, and widows/widowers.

Most corporate procedures are simple: • Request a matching form from your company. • Complete and submit the form to JPII along with your gift. • JPII will verify the completed form and return it to the company. • The company issues a matching gift contribution to JPII.

LIFE INSURANCE POLICIES – Naming JPII the beneficiary of an existing life insurance policy that is no longer needed to provide for dependents offers a simple way to support JPII. If you have questions or would like to learn more about the many ways you can support JPII, please contact the Advancement Office at 843-645-3838.

Our VISION for the Future of JPII

The new STEAM Innovation and Design Center will add approximately 16,000 square feet of additional classroom space allowing us the ability to offer a forward-thinking teaching and learning environment in the areas of science, technology, engineering, the visual arts, and math. This building will increase the school’s capacity to 400+ students, thus ensuring the long-term financial viability of JPII.

Expanding the Athletic Center will create a much-needed home for our performing arts programs while providing multi-purpose space for wrestling, cheerleading, dance, and a fitness center. Storage, as well as restrooms for the athletic complex, will be part of this 4,000+ square foot addition.

The renovation and expansion of the athletic fields will allow the JPII football, baseball, tennis, and track programs to have an on-campus location for practices and games, as well as allow us the ability to add programs in the future. With almost 80% of JPII students participating in at least one sport, playing in front of more students and faculty will create a greater sense of school spirit. When fully built, the new complex will include a synthetic turf multi-purpose stadium with lights for football, soccer and lacrosse, a new baseball field with lights, six tennis courts, a track, and additional soccer fields and parking.

The multi-use Chapel and Performing Arts Hall will

provide our community with a beautiful place of worship. With its excellent acoustics, the Chapel will also serve as

home to our growing choral and instrumental

music programs.
