Chlorine Matrix

1. Simple Formula for Chlorine Release

Volume (gal) X Density (lb

s/gal) X (Concentration(ppm)/1,000,000) = Released Pounds

Notes:

1. Sanitizing make-up solution concentrations will ty

pically be 500 to 2000 ppm.

2. Sodium Hypochlorite is purchased as a 12.5% solution.

3. Sodium Hypochlorite tank storage tank size is 20,000 gallons.

2. Sodium Hypochlorite Density

% Chlorine

Solution Density (lbs/gal)

0.1% (1,000 ppm)

8.4

5.25%

9.0

15.00%

9.5

* Substitute parts per m

illion (ppm) concentration with % concentration by dividing % by 100.

3. Examples

a) 10,000 gallons of hypochlorite solution was sent to

waste treatment where the pH was 6.0. T

he concentration of the hypochlorite solution was 500 ppm, how much chlorine was released?

Volume (10,000 gallons) X Density (8.4 lbs/gal) X Concentration (500 ppm/1,000,000) = 42 lbs of chlorine released if 100% reacted

b) A 30,000 gallon tank of 15.5% hypochlorite ruptured spillin

g 100% of its contents on the ground. A

quick check of the ground pH showed a 4.5 reading and the spilled solution had no

detectable chlorine, how much chlorine was released?

Volume (30,000 gallons) X Density (9.5 lbs/gal) X Concentration (15.5%/100) = 44,175 lbs of chlorine escaped

Handling Releases – Practice

• Run Table Top Drills and Field Exercises

• Information Should be at Your Finger Tips

• Actually Call/Test the Listed Numbers

• Identify and Follow-up on Issues

Handling Releases – Prevent

• Evaluate Transfer/Unloading Areas

• Routine Inspection of Equipment

• Routine Inspection of Containment

• Routine Inspection of SPCC Supplies

• Review of Unloading Procedures

• Audit Practice vs. Procedures
