Prince William and fiancéeKate Middleton have revealedeagerly-awaited details oftheir forthcoming wedding. The pair will have the eyes ofthe world on them on Friday,

Information released includes the route bywhich the bride will travel to the Abbey andconfirmation that the Archbishop ofCanterbury, Rowan Williams, will marry thecouple.

Miss Middleton will travel by car to theAbbey along a route which will include TheMall, Horse Guards Parade, Whitehall andParliament Square.

A royal spokesman could not confirm ifthe bride would depart for the 11amceremony from Buckingham Palace, ClarenceHouse, St James’s Palace or a privateaddress.

Dean of Westminster, the Very Rev DrJohn Hall, will conduct the service.

The Archbishop of Canterbury will marry

Prince William and Miss Middleton, with theBishop of London, the Rt Rev RichardChartres, giving the address.

The newly-weds will return toBuckingham Palace in a carriage processionalong a route including Parliament Square,Whitehall, Horse Guards Parade and TheMall, St James’s Palace said.

Once inside the palace, the Queen willhold a reception for the couple with guestsrepresenting the couple’s official and privatelives.

The Prince of Wales will give a privatedinner, followed by dancing, at BuckinghamPalace in the evening for the couple and theirclose friends and family.

The pair announced their engagement inNovember, nine years after meeting asstudents at St Andrews University, and theirwedding is expected to draw a hugeworldwide audience.

wedding they wanted in a venue they chosefor its “staggering beauty” and 1,000-yearroyal history.

They are also keen on making the day anational celebration and a concert in HydePark to mark the occasion has been proposed.

Although Prince William and KateMiddleton have announced many of the mostimportant parts of their wedding plans, anumber of key details about their big dayhave yet to be confirmed. They include:

The wedding dress

Miss Middleton, who is already renownedfor her fashion sense, will keep the design ofher dress a secret until her wedding day, royalaides say.

Bridal experts predict that she will opt forsomething traditional but with a modern twist– and very different from the voluminousfairytale dress with a 25ft train worn byWilliam’s mother, Diana, Princess of Wales, when she got married in 1981.

The guest list

William is not yet the heir to the throne sothe wedding will not be an official stateoccasion, but the guests are expected toinclude a number of foreign heads of state.

There has been speculation about whetherthese will include glamorous political couplessuch as Barack and Michelle Obama, and

Nicolas Sarkozy and Carla Bruni.

The honeymoon

William proposed to Miss Middleton onholiday in Kenya in October, and bookmakershave predicted that the newlyweds will returnto the African country for their honeymoon.

Other popular possibilities include Scotland,Wales and the exclusive private Caribbeanisland of Mustique.

The cake

When William’s parents tied the knot theyopted for a five-tier masterpiece created by theRoyal Navy Cookery School at Chatham.

It was reported that every raisin in the whitecake was hand-picked and that it took half anhour to crack all of the eggs needed.

The flowers

Kate could follow in the footsteps of Dianaand the Queen and include in her bridalbouquet a sprig of myrtle from the bush grownfrom the original myrtle in Queen Victoria’swedding bouquet.

Diana’s flowers consisted of white and goldstephanotis, gardenias, orchids, lily of thevalley and yellow Earl Mountbatten roses. TheQueen chose white orchids for her bouquet.

After both of the women wed, theirbouquets were later sent to Westminster Abbeyand laid on the tomb of the Unknown Warrior.

The couple were said to be “completely over themoon” after getting the spring wedding theywanted in a venue they chose for its “staggeringbeauty” and 1,000-year royal history“ ”

Royal occasions often have crowds waiting in The Mall. This lively throng gathered for theQueen’s Golden Jubilee celebrations in 2002. Below, Buckingham Palace

The majority of us will behuddled around our TVs onApril 29th as we watch PrinceWilliam and Kate Middletonbecome husband and wife inthe spectacular Westminster

Abbey.But North Lincolnshire couple, Gemma

Pitchfork and Shane Bryan, will be busyexchanging their own vows.

Last year, in April 2010, Gemma andShane, from Bottesford, booked their weddingat Cave Castle in South Cave, but didn’texpect to be sharing it with the rest of thecountry.

“We weren’t sure at first if it would be agood or a bad thing, but so far it hasn’tcaused us any problems and has even added alittle bit of extra excitement to the build-up,”says Gemma, a finance manager at Carers’Support Centre in Brigg.

The couple went to school together, buttheir love story began a few years ago whenthe pair bumped into each other again andthey both said it was love at first sight.

Shane proposed to Gemma on holiday onthe balcony of their Tunisian hotel room inApril, last year.

And there’s no fear the royal couple willsteal their limelight.

“Getting married to each other is what’simportant to us, not who else we will besharing it with. We would still have chosenthis date even if we had known the royalcouple were marrying, because this is the date

which is right for us,” says Shane, anemployment coach at Action ForEmployment.

William and Kate are set to marry at 11am,whereas Gemma and Shane will be walkingdown the aisle a few hours later at 2pm.

“We are sure some of our guests will bewatching it before they attend our wedding,”says Gemma.

Like all brides-to-be, not too many secretsare being let out, but the couple will behaving 50 guests in the day and about 80 onthe evening to help celebrate their wedding, which will have a modern theme with avintage twist.

And it will be a very special day for therest of the family, too. Gemma’seight-year-old son, Ethan Graham, will bewalking her down the aisle and the couplewill be joined by Gemma’s goddaughter,eight-year-old Megan Lee and Shane’sdaughter, three-year-old Olivia Bryan, as theflower girls.

And Shane’s nieces, Lauren and KellySharp, will be the bridesmaids.

After the wedding and reception, the newMr and Mrs Bryan will be jetting off toAmerica for their honeymoon and will bespending time in New York and SanFrancisco.

Getting married on the same day as thefuture king is certainly going to be amemorable day and one which no one willforget.

Our wedding daywill be just as

special as PrinceWilliam and Kate’s

DRESSES

We may only just beentering the spring/summer weddingsseason of 2011, butnewly engagedladies are already

looking ahead to the end of the year.Brides-to-be who are getting married this

summer will have their dresses sorted andwill be on to the stages of final fittings.

So, for those who have just embarked onthe journey of finding their dream dress, what’s in store?

Many who will be starting to gather ideasabout their dress will probably be planning tomarry towards the end of the year, so theywill be looking to the autumn/winter trends.

According to Sue Anable, owner of TheBridal Design Studio in Oswald Road,Scunthorpe, every bride-to-be wants a bit of“bling” on her wedding day.

“For this year’s autumn/winter season, white is making a comeback,” said Sue.

“We will also see a lot of lace, but onslimmer fitting dresses. Another fabric whichis in demand is chiffon.

“This can be used in bigger gowns as itreally flows.

“Tulle skirts will be popular and satin is afabric that is always a great choice for bridesand will probably continue to be the numberone.

“As far as styles are concerned, we canexpect a variety down the aisle later this year, but women have to consider their size andshape before settling on a particular design.

“Drop-waisted gowns are continuing ontrend as women are opting for a completedress. Ruching is always flattering andcreates an attractive look in many fabrics.”

Deborah Moore, who owns DeborahMoore bridal, prom and occasion wear, in

Hessle, said our love of vintage styling willcontinue this year, together with the adoredconcept of the English country gardencelebration.

“We will see bridal gowns adorned withlashings of Swarovski crystals and touches oflace,” said Deborah.

“If lace isn’t your look, then try vintageveils, lace boleros or ruffled jackets instead.

“These will be accessorised with beltswith jewelled accents and flower details, bothsubtle and flamboyant.

“Feminine florals and petals will danceacross voluminous skirts and we will seemany basques with embellished waistbands, shoulder straps or corsages, which can bepositioned to taste.”

Bridal gowns often reflect current catwalktrends and Sue is getting requests forone-shoulder dresses and floral corsages.

“We also see feathers in small amounts

as decoration or as full skirts,” said Sue.

“As brides will be buying dresses for thewinter months, little feather or fur wraps, bolero jackets – in both lace and satin – are apopular choice and will add that touch ofglamour to the bridal outfit.

“Although the veils will be plain in design,a scattering of crystal highlights thisaccessory.”

Deborah predicts lots of 1930s and 1950ssilhouettes with a touch of Hollywoodglamour.

“There will be nipped-in waists andoversized skirts, with short, flirty andfull-length ball gowns,” said Deborah.

“Column-style gowns, fishtail skirts, ruffles and touches of pearls or vintagebrooches will also be seen.”

DESIGNER CHOICESROYAL bride-to-be KateMiddleton is rumoured to havepicked her wedding dressdesigner, with speculationgrowing that fashion supremoBruce Oldfield has been giventhe job.

The coveted commissionwould be a enormous coup forthe designer, whose career hasseen him dress everyone fromDiana, Princess Of Wales, toHollywood stars such asCatherine Zeta Jones.

Interviewed in 2008 by TheTimes newspaper, Oldfield saidPrince William’s girlfriend wouldbe the perfect person to designfor.

He said: “Kate Middleton israther pretty. She’d be a lovelyperson to dress.

“I think she’d look good inmy clothes, I think she’s got avery nice figure.”

Miss Middleton’s mother,Carole, and sister, Pippa, werephotographed recently meetingOldfield at his boutique inLondon’s Knightsbridge.

The designer spent more thanan hour with the pair at his shop, which sells couture creations andoff-the-peg outfits.

But directly opposite wasOldfield’s “wedding emporium”,described on his website as a“one-stop wedding shop” sellingcouture, custom-made andready-to-wear dresses andaccessories for the big day.

An Oldfield creation is likelyto cost tens of thousands ofpounds and take many weeks tocomplete.

It is thought William’s fiancéewill keep the creator of the gowna secret until the marriageceremony, when the Princefinally sees her wearing the dress.

A source said: “This is acompletely private matter, butMiss Middleton would like herdress to be a surprise on herwedding day.”

Oldfield’s ten-year fashionrelationship with Diana began in1980 when he started creatingcouture for the Princess whom,he said, was “very open tosuggestions”.

William and Miss Middletonwill wed in Westminster Abbeyon April 29.

A St James’s Palacespokesman declined to commenton who might be asked to makeMiss Middleton’s wedding dress.

PRINCESS CHICFashion boss Harold Tillman has predicted a“beautifully elegant and chic” ensemble fromKate Middleton at her wedding.

Mr Tillman, who is chairman of theBritish Fashion Council (BFC), praised the“demeanour” of the royal bride-to-be and saidshe had a natural ability to wear clothes well.

But Mr Tillman said he had no idea whowould be the designer behind the dress – thedetails of which are top secret.

After opening London Fashion Week atSomerset House, he said: “I’m sure she’sgoing to be beautifully elegant and chic.

“Her demeanour says she’s going to bebeautifully chic.

“This is all about whether you can or can’twear clothes and she looks great.”

But he stressed that he is equally lookingforward to seeing what supermodel KateMoss will wear at her expected wedding toJamie Hince.

He sad: “There are two Kates gettingmarried this year, Moss and Middleton, and Idon’t know what either is going to wear. I’msure Moss’s outfit will be interesting.”

He added the highly anticipated royalceremony on April 29 was a “blessing” thatwill keep all eyes on Britain.

“A royal wedding of this magnitude issomething we’re blessed as a country to have, and of course we’ve got the Olympics nextyear so we’re blessed again,” he said.

“There’s a huge wealth of events in theUK that will keep the focus on us.”

Mr Tillman spoke after Paul Costelloe’sshow, which launched the six-day fashionevent. Despite noting that Government cutswere a “concern” to British businesses andorganisations such as the BFC, Mr Tillmansaid he was confident the storm could beweathered.

“There’s more strength in fashionbusinesses than in most,” he said.

“You have new business twice a year infashion. There’s a lot of power in fashiondesigners and businesses.”

All sewn up

Working as aSaturday girl in abridal shop, DonnaAllenby wouldspend her timehanging dresses

and helping brides-to-be find their dreamdress. From the minute she started, sheknew this was the industry she wanted tobe in and her passion for bridal dressesgrew into a career.

“I worked my way up the ranks frombeing a Saturday girl, re-hanging dresses andanswering the phone in a boutique,” saidDonna, who is now a wedding dress designerwith her own brand, Donna Lee Designs.

“Ten years later, I worked for a mid-pricebridal brand – there aren’t many jobs withinthe bridal industry that I haven’t done.”

As far as Donna is concerned, she has thebest job in the world. Every day she is livingin a “girly” world, filled with beautifulfabrics, sparkle and smiles.

“I get to be a very small part of the bestday of a girl’s life – that’s my trueinspiration,” she told me.

Donna set-up her company in January lastyear, but launched her first collection –Fairytale – in September.

The fairytale theme was a natural choice,as she believes “every bride is looking for herhappily ever after”.

“It was all about endless romance, sheerelegance and traditional shapes with amodern twist,” said Donna, who is fromScunthorpe, but now lives in Leamington Spain Warwickshire.

“There is something in Fairytale foreveryone,” she said.

Every bride has their own unique style andidea about how they want to look on the dayand Donna felt that, by taking traditionalfairytales as a starting point and playingaround with them, she could pretty muchcover the style and personality of every21st-century bride – from the grace andelegance of Swan Lake through to the girlysassiness of Alice In Wonderland, to thediva-ish and iconic Queen Of Hearts.

Luxury fabrics were sourced from all overthe world, including French taffeta, Italianhand-made lace and silks, and high-qualityembellishments such as Swarovski crystalsand seed pearls.

“My first collection comprises a diverserange of commercial designs,” said Donna.

“I spoke to many retailers for feedbackabout what they wanted, what their brideswere asking for and what was not availablein their price bracket.

“Time and again, retailers came back tome with the same answers: Quality, structureand luxury fabrics, so having that impeccablefit within my collection was a must.”

Donna’s Fairytale Collection was so wellreceived that her business picked up the titleof Best New Bridal Brand Award at theAttire Bridal Supplier Awards.

“Winning the award for it was great. Itwas based on the stockists’ reaction to ourcollection from their customers,” said Donna.

“I work on the manufacturing side a lot ofthe time, so I always deal with stores, but wewere getting calls from brides to say thanks.

“It means a lot.”

The past few months have been spent onDonna’s second collection – Diva – whichhas just launched.

“Fairytale was very dreamy, but this is

totally different,” said Donna.

“I was inspired by the old Hollywoodstyle. I grew up watching black and whitefilms with actresses such as Audrey Hepburnand Marilyn Monroe – real women with realshapes who looked amazing.

“I have taken tips from that era to makeour brides beautiful, glamorous and stylish.”

For someone who spends their timemaking gorgeous dresses, I wondered ifDonna had a particular favourite.

“It’s really difficult to pick one out that Ilike best,” said Donna.

“My Diva collection is a dream come true.I worried about my second collection, asFairytale was such as success. I wonderedhow I would top that.

“But I love all the dresses from bothcollections. I would wear every single one.”

LAURA GREENDALE meetsthe dress designer who isliving her own fairytale ...

UNVEILED?ROYAL bride-to-be Kate Middleton will weara “modest” dress on her wedding day that willcover up any bare flesh, fashion designerBruce Oldfield has predicted.

Oldfield, who is rumoured to have won thecoveted commission to create MissMiddleton’s bridal gown, said PrinceWilliam’s fiancée’s outfit will have sleeves butwill still provoke a strong reaction from thewatching world.

In keeping with the tradition of past royalweddings, most famously Diana, Princess OfWales’s wedding, she will also wear a veil.

But for the evening dinner and dance, hosted by her future father-in-law the PrinceOf Wales, Miss Middleton will change intoanother dress, he said.

When asked on the US breakfast showGood Morning America if there would be twodresses on the wedding day, Oldfield replied“yes” but remained tight-lipped about hissources and whether he had beencommissioned to create the wedding gown.

The designer said: “Whatever happens, there’s going to be a sharp intake of breath:‘Shhh – oh my God, what is she wearing?’ or,‘Oh, doesn’t she look fabulous?’.

“I’m sure the dress is going to be modest interms of coverage – it has to be. It will havesleeves, it has to have sleeves.

“You can’t walk down Westminster Abbeyin a strapless dress. It just wouldn’t happen.

“It has to suit the grandeur of that aisle, it’senormous. I can predict she will wear a veil.

“Whatever she wears, she is going to lookgreat because she is gorgeous.

“She’s slim, she’s elegant, she is aware ofherself.

“When you see her moving, she is not ashy, shrinking violet.

“But she is a normal, ordinary girl whohappens to have bagged the big one.”

HATS

Hat’s theway to do it

When it comes to hercareer, you couldsay AnnabelAnderson leads adouble life. At thebeginning of the

week, she can be found carrying out herduties as a senior research scientist incardiology and biochemistry at HullRoyal Infirmary, but come Thursday,Annabel ditches her lab coat to spendtime making stunning creations as amilliner.

“My millinery business and my career as ascientist are two completely different worlds, but I love having the variety in my workingweek,” said Annabel, who owns TheBeverley Hat Company in Lairgate,Beverley.

“I enjoy the medical research and havingmy science to concentrate on for a few daysand then getting involved with fashion, colour and creativity towards the end of theweek.

“I don’t let them cross over – it’s not likeI’m ordering hats while on my lunch hour atthe hospital. It keeps it all stimulating andexciting.”

Hat-making was a hobby that spiralledinto a bigger passion for Annabel and led herto open her own shop two years ago.

“It all started ten years ago, when Icouldn’t find a hat for the races,” saidAnnabel, who moved to the area fromManchester in 2000.

“I had a look on the internet and saw howexpensive some hats were, so thought Iwould embrace my creative side and do amillinery course.”

She called the Leeds College Of Art AndDesign to enquire about sitting in on amillinery class to see what it involved andthen spoke to the course leader, Peter

Kingston-Youel, a former designer at luxuryaccessories brand Liberty of London, whoencouraged her to take part.

“I did the course part-time and finished in2004,” said Annabel, who tells me hercreative side comes from her mother andgrandmother, who was a weddingdress-maker.

“It was something I enjoyed so much thatI wanted to continue and ended up entering amillinery competition run by Hat Magazine.

“I made it to the semi-finals and was theonly person who was a non-professionalmilliner, which I was proud of.

“I also took part in a few millinerymasterclasses – one was with Rose Cory, who was milliner to the late Queen Mother. She taught me how to dye feathers and maketiaras.”

Annabel spent the next four years makinghats in the front room of her Beverley homewhen she had some spare time, whichbecame a talking point in her neighbourhood.

“I used to display all the bespoke hats inmy front-room window,” laughs Annabel, who spends any free time working on her1820 Georgian terraced house, which shetells me is an “ongoing project”.

“I would be commissioned to createone-off hats for customers and would do itfrom home. The neighbours loved walkingpast and seeing my latest projects in thewindow.

“People still come into the shop now andask me, ‘Are you the hat lady who lives inMinster Moorgate’?”

It was in June 2008 that Annabel wasapproached by a friend to open her own shopin the town. Susan Oliver, who previouslyran The Dog Shop from the Lairgatepremises, asked Annabel if she was interestedin selling her hats from the shop – and shegladly accepted.

“I think having a milliners in Beverley is agood thing for the town to have, especiallywith the racecourse being nearby,” saidAnnabel.

“I try to source as many materials as I canfrom the UK. My feathers come from a farmin Devon and my cocque feathers come fromlocal farms.

“The sheepskin is from Somerset and Ilove my Fairtrade products, such as the sunhats from Brazil and the Panama hats fromEcuador.

“The men’s hats come from all over theworld – Germany, the US and Australia.”

Annabel’s stock varies from season toseason, with winter and summer productsselling well.

Annabel took the time out to show mesome of the fabulous headwear – includingan eye-catching blue peacock feather

fascinator, finished with blue Swarovskicrystals.

Winter may have only just left us, butAnnabel turned her attentions to upcomingspring/summer trends months ago, ready forthe flurry of weddings.

She predicts bright, striking colours willbe popular this year.

“Jade green and poppy red are tipped tobe big this spring/summer,” said Annabel.

“Like last year, blue will also be big, but Ithink it will be shades like French navy thatpeople will go for. Primrose yellow will alsobe in demand.

“I spent a lot of time scouring the internetand department stores, seeing what othermilliners are doing, and some are going forneutral safari colour.

“Latte is always the most popular colour

As the summer wedding season approaches, LAURAGREENDALE speaks to milliner Annabel Anderson abouthats for the big day . . .

HEADWEARTHE Beverley Hat Company stocks somestunning creations by top milliner VivienSheriff, who has designed hats for KateMiddleton and the Duchess of Cornwall inthe past and has three commissions fromroyal wedding guests for the big day onApril 29.

Vivien created the headpiece Kate worelast month for her first royal engagementwith William and has also beencommissioned to make the headwear forher sister, Pippa Middleton, at the wedding.

Although these designs are firmly underwraps, we asked Annabel Anderson herthoughts on headwear for Will and Kate’swedding day.

She said: “At the marriage of PrinceEdward and Sophie, Countess of Wessex, nobody wore hats – the Queen had to weara fascinator – so, there is a chance therewill be no hats at the royal wedding inApril.

“However, Kate Middleton has beenpictured wearing hats at various events andis quite traditional, so we could see somefantastic headwear at the wedding.

“Depending on who it’s for, I have afew ideas about what I would make for the

royal wedding guests, and what I think theywill go for.

“For the Queen, I would probably optfor a French navy hat with a touch ofcream. Camilla is a fan of shades of brown,so I’m guessing she will go for somethingin this colour range.

“I think the younger royals will go fornon-traditional headwear, perhaps ahattinator – a creation that’s not quite a hat,but more than a fascinator.

“Zara Phillips wears some lovelyclothes, so I think she will go forsomething trendy.”

Kate Middleton has commissionedflamboyant hat-maker Philip Treacy tocreate headgear for the royal weddingparty.

The royal bride, who is keeping herdress a state secret, is a big fan of Treacyand wore a broad-rimmed hat of his toPrince William’s passing-out parade atSandhurst in 2006.

Kate, 29, recently met Treacy after theDuchess of Cornwall recommended hisdesigns for the senior members of thewedding party, including mother-of-the-bride Carole.

with my customers, so I think that will bepopular. Black is a safe bet and is a colour wesell well.”

And as for styles, Annabel tells me thatlots of people are going for a traditional hat, with a modern twist.

“After Kate Middleton was picturedwearing a pillbox hat at a winter wedding, wehave had a lot of requests,” said Annabel.

“The size of these hats has becomesmaller, but with more detail. People want net

and quills and are adding sequins and pearlsto make them elegant and ornate.”

For anyone who loves their hats, TheBeverley Hat Company’s base, tucked awayin Lairgate, is like an Aladdin’s cave, withshelves to the ceiling full of bright andextravagant creations.

“There’s a lot of etiquette to wearing ahat,” said Annabel.

“Not only do we sell hats, but we offeradvice on what will suit people and

complement the rest of their outfit.

“The Mayoress of Beverley and Mayoressof Withernsea have come to me to find hatsthat are suitable for civic functions. I’ve alsohad visits from people who are attending theQueen’s Garden Party and need something towear.

“The general rule if you are wearing a hatis that it should be no wider than yourshoulders, or else the hat wears you. Also, ifyou are small in height or have a small frame,

the brim needs to be quite small.

“For weddings, it’s always best to have asmaller hat in a muted colour, as you willneed to think of the practicalities of getting inand out of cars, kissing people and to makesure you don’t have a shadow over your facewhen pictures are being taken.

“It’s quite amusing when women comerunning in – with their husbands waitingoutside in the car – on their way to a weddingand need something to go with their dress. It’s good fun.”

Here comesthe mother

(of the bride)Yummy mummies are always looking for new ways to shine, and when better to lookthe part than on your daughter’s big day? LAURA GREENDALE checks out the fashionsto place the mother of the bride centre-stage ...

The choice of wedding outfit forthe mother of the bride isalmost as important to them asthat of the couple actuallygetting married. The mother ofthe bride plays a vital role on

the day and spend a lot of time walkingaround, meeting and greeting people, solooking their very best is top priority.

For this summer’s weddings, brightcolours are key and accessories are becomingbigger and bolder.

“We have been selling a lot of purples, reds and fuchsias,” said Joyce Clappison, owner of Wats On, in Willerby Road, Hull.

“In the past month, we have had turquoiseon display in our windows and we had a lotof ladies purchasing lime green outfits forearly spring weddings.

“Although bright colours will be big forspring and summer, neutral shades, such ascream and champagne, will still sell well.”

In addition to the bright colours set to bepopular this season, Joyce also tells me that afew prints are coming in for mother of thebride outfits.

“We are also seeing a few prints in silk –which are ideal for high summer weddings inthe Caribbean,” said Joyce, who tells me a lotof women are going for colour themes withtheir outfit.

Making sure you are dressed to stand outfrom the crowd, while also complementingthe bride, is a number one priority.

Colour choice is one of the first thoughtswhen it comes to choosing an outfit for themother of the bride.

However, another important element toconsider is style. With summer almost here, dresses and skirts will be the best options, with long and knee-length styles in demand.

“There is a wide variety of styles that willbe popular for the mother of the bride thissummer,” said Joyce.

“One of our brands, John Charles – whichwon Best Occasionwear Collection, at theBridal Buyer Awards – has brought out alittle, straight dress, which is great for themother of the bride attending a summerwedding.

“John Charles, along with designer IanStuart, has brought out lots of boleros tocomplement his dresses, instead of jacketswith buttons.

“They are a great choice for the warmermonths.”

No outfit is ever complete without a fewaccessories and, this season, hattinators aretipped to be the must-have item for themother of the bride.

“Women will be going with rather wackyhattinators – they will be much bigger thisseason,” said Joyce.

Deborah Denton-Mayne, owner of WayIn, Brigg, echoes the thoughts of Joyce andsays colour will be the stand-out feature inthis summer’s mother of the bride outfits.

“Our view of the spring/summer 2011collections is, it’s one of the best I’ve seen inmy 25 years in the business,” said Deborah.

“Colour is paramount this season with silkfabrics being designed in stunning vibrantcolours reminiscent of sweet peas in anEnglish country garden.

“Whether the mothers of the bride andgroom want floaty and feminine, or simpleand elegant, there is something to suit alltastes.

“Styles are much younger, with a funelement reflecting how us ladies feel – wedon’t want dresses that are too formal orstaid and frumpy any more. We want to havethat ‘wow’ factor and look glamorous.”

Deborah adds that hats are now back atthe forefront of fashion and they completethe look just like the icing on a weddingcake.

“There will be lace, appliqué, beadworkand ruffles on dresses,” said Deborah.

“Once you remove the jacket, the dressescome into their own. The versatility nowmeans you have a beautiful dress that willcarry over into the evening, letting you getmaximum wear from your outfit.”

BUDGET

Although there may beonly two people in amarriage, often weddingsinvolve many more. Fromthe jewellers for theengagement ring to the

travel agent who books the honeymoon, there’s a different person for every stageand the cost can end up spiralling. But as a bride-to-be, Kate Youdale

couldn’t think of anything worse and took onthe daunting task of planning a home-madewedding.

She used the creative talents of closefriends and family to put together her dreamday on a budget.

“I always intended to do a lot for mywedding but, in the end, we did pretty mucheverything,” said Kate, who got engaged toher other half, James, on Christmas Eve in2009.

“Two days after we got engaged, I wastrawling the internet for ideas and startedgathering thoughts on what parts of thewedding we were going to do ourselves.

“Our families are quite creative and wedidn’t have a huge budget, so it was theperfect option for us.”

Kate, who owns dressmaking companyThe Party Frock, not only made her ownwedding dress, but five bridesmaid dressesand waistcoats and ties for the groom, groomsmen and fathers of the bride andgroom.

In addition, she hand-made all of thebridesmaids’ accessories and, along with hermum, Jacky Birkett, made the stationery andbridal flowers.

Kate’s sister-in-law – who is also calledKate Youdale – owns Kate Elizabeth’sCupcakes and provided cakes for the big day.

The only elements of the wedding handledby other businesses were the chair covers,

topiary trees, corsages and balloons.

“It was great to involve our close friendsand family and to create our dream weddingtogether,” said Kate, who lives in ScawbyBrook, near Brigg. “Although my mum madethe stationary, the bridesmaids all gottogether one night to help out.

“James and I wanted our wedding day tohave a personal touch and we wanted to putour stamp on it. By doing things ourselves,we made sure our wedding was different toeveryone else’s.”

The wedding took place at Reeds Hotel, inBarton-Upon-Humber, on October 16, 2010.

For James and Kate, the day was not onlymagical, but also extremely personal with allthe hand-made touches.

Kate’s dresses were stunning and all madeto suit each bridesmaid’s individual shape.

“I wanted my wedding outfit to be a bitdifferent from everything else available andfor my bridesmaids to have flattering dressesthey could potentially wear again,” said Kate.

“Although my dress was traditional, Iwore a shiny pair of sequin Converse shoesunder my dress, which was a nice hint ofco-ordination as the groom and groomsmenwere wearing matching Vans trainers.

“Making the dresses got a bit stressful, asI was also working on five bridesmaids’dresses for another couple, who were gettingmarried on the same day as us.”

Kate Elizabeth’s Cupcakes designed asurprise wedding cake, which was far fromtraditional, but perfect for the couple.

A tier of more than 100 cupcakes wastopped with a two-tiered black andred-themed cake, covered in stars and toppedwith a spray of shooting stars and feathers.

Not only did Kate provide the cake andcupcakes, but she also made “cake pops” asthe wedding favours and created a “candybuffet” – a table full of sweet treats. “Cakepops” are a new cake craze to hit the UK,with the cake on a stick, similar to a lollipop.

The result of everyone’s hard work was afantastic and trendy wedding day, whichdidn’t break the bank.

“It was a good way to save a few penniesand we all enjoyed it,” said Kate, whosephotographer, Lauren Meadows, of LaurenDanielle Imagery, is a friend from work.

“I work from home and make dresses, soit was fairly easy to sort things out – it mightbe more difficult for people who work longhours, as they may not have the time.

“Everyone wants a different style ofwedding and, by planning and creating yourown, you can have something really unique.”

WEDDING VOWS

One of the most specialmoments of anywedding day has to bewhen the vows areexchanged. And moreand more people than

ever are opting to make this part of thebig day even more personal by writingtheir own wedding vows.Rachel Salter and her wife Laura (née

Spittlehouse) are just one couple whodecided to come up with their own words fortheir civil wedding ceremony.

The couple, from Barton-Upon-Humber,got engaged in 2008 after a romantic mealand married on November 20 last year atArties Mill Lodge, in Brigg, with 50 guests.

“The registrar was helpful as they gave usfour or five different versions of the standardvows we could use for our ceremony,” saidRachel, who planned the wedding in just sixweeks. “It might be right for some people, but we very quickly came to the conclusionthat we didn’t really want to say the samethings as other couples.

“We went away for a couple of weeks andwrote down our feelings on our own. Whenwe got together to compare, we had writtenmany of the same things, which made lifeeasier. From there, we strung the vowstogether, trying to keep it simple, and to saythe things we would naturally say to eachother.

“This made it special and really ‘mean’something – our words, our thoughts and ourcommitment to each other.”

Writing your owns vows isn’t foreveryone, but Rachel says it made their dayexciting and unique.

“Everyone is different and it’s really notfor us to say whether other people should orshouldn’t use traditional vows or create theirown,” said Rachel. “My advice would be totake a look at the vows from the registrarfirst. If they say and mean what you wantthem to, then they might be right for you.

“Personally, writing our own vowsallowed us to reaffirm everything we felt. Itwas a declaration of our love and the respectwe have for one another, said in the way that

we wanted to say it. There is somethingspecial in creating your own and I think thisadded to the excitement and uniqueness ofthe day. Our guests loved them and there

were a few tears of happiness.”

Rachel and Laura finished their perfectday by heading off to a cottage in the NorthYorkshire Moors for their honeymoon.

“I’ve met lots of brides who want a sexy, plunging bra, that is backless, strapless andpretty – which doesn’t really exist,” saidAngela.

“Women also come to us with this visionof a basque, stocking and suspenders to wearthroughout their day ready for the night, butthis isn’t always practical – especially not ona really hot day.

“Every dress and every bride is different,so you need to find what is best for you.”

Smooth bras are a good option if youwant that flawless look under your gown and

strapless bras are best for a strapless dress.

“Some brides look horrified when Isuggest a nude bra under their dress,” saidAngela. “They want to go for white or ivory,to match their dress, but what they don’trealise is that nude will appear invisibleunderneath.

“A nude bra can be worn with somelovely knickers during the day, and we oftensuggest a bra to match the pants for theevening.

The right underwear can make or break a bridal outfitand, as LAURA GREENDALE discovers, the right supportcan slim, enhance curves and make you feel great, too

Your chosen wedding dress, the one you have dreamt ofsince you were a little girl, should fit every curve youwish it to and flatter the bitsthat you are trying to

disguise. But finding “the one” would not matter a

jot if you didn’t think about supporting yourfeminine bits and pieces properly.

And choosing the perfect lingerie to gounder your wedding gown is no mean feat.

It needs to enhance the overall look ofyour outfit.

And if you choose well, it will not onlymake your day, but your groom’s as well.

You will be spoilt for choice in the locallingerie shops as they offer the prettiest laces, and the sexiest silks.

Beautiful they may be. However, they willnot be worth the money you paid for them ifthey are not comfortable.

And, as some brides wear their dressthroughout the whole celebration, morning, noon and night, they will need to feel snugand safe.

Angela Brown, owner of SerenityLingerie Boutique, in Hessle, East Yorkshire, says brides-to-be should start organisingunderwear for their big day in plenty of time.

“It’s not a good idea to leave it until theweek before, as items may have to beordered in,” said Angela.

“It may even be best to consider theunderwear before the dress, to make sure youwill be comfy and look great on the day.”

Many brides find their perfect dress andthen expect to be able to to find the perfect

making a comeback and shades such as nude, talc and milk are set to be popular forbrides.”

As well as the bra, brides must alsoconsider what other underwear they will bewearing.

Angela says this is up to the individual, but she advises people to buy a size above.

“Slightly bigger knickers and thongswon’t dig in and create love handles,” saidAngela. “They will also hide that unsightlypanty line and will give a smoother finish, especially if it is a fitted dress.

“Old-fashioned slips, offering a bit of

support, are also making a comeback.”

Aside from the lingerie she sells in herboutique, a large part of Angela’s business isa mastectomy range.

She has worked hard for a number ofyears to let women who have suffered frombreast cancer know they can feel pretty andfeminine, so specialises in a range ofgorgeous mastectomy underwear.

“For those brides-to-be who require amastectomy bra, there are styles available,”said Angela. “We have some nude,multi-way bras with clear straps, which canbe worn with a variety of dresses.”

When visiting a lingerie shop, bridesshould take their dress with them if at allpossible. Alternatively, take a photo of it sothe assistant will be able to have a look at theneckline and cut of the fabric.

They will make sure there are nounnecessary straps, edges or lines showingthat shouldn’t be and that no labels arevisible.

LINGERIE HINTS Remember to choose areputable range of lingerie. Don’t guess your size. Ask afitter to tell you yourmeasurements. Feel good all day and nightlong by buying a set of sexylingerie for the evening, too. Don’t buy the lingerie tooearly, as you may lose weightoff your bust. Or leave it until the last day –you may not get what yourequire. And, last but by no meansleast, never settle for wearing“any white”. HAIR

Lusciouslocks

As soon as AlexanderTurnbull finished a day atschool, he would hop onhis bike and go to work.Pedalling as fast as hecould through the streets

of Kirk Ella, where he grew up, hecouldn’t wait to reach Mark Hill’s hairsalon where he could practise his basichairdressing skills.

“I started there as a Saturday boy when Iwas 14,” Alexander tells me, as he finishessomeone’s colour in his Anlaby salon.

“I would go there every night to practiseand practise. The amount of work I put inwas paramount. In this industry, it is socompetitive that you have to stand out fromthe rest. If you want to get to the top, youhave to put the work in.”

That is exactly what Alexander did, and itseems to have paid off.

The award-winning hairdresser has justpicked up his most impressive accolade todate – North Eastern Hairdresser Of TheYear at the British Hairdressing Awards.

Having been a finalist in the British Men’sHairdresser Of The Year contest, shortlistedin The World Image Awards and a runner-upin the prestigious Afro Catwalk HairdresserOf The Year, Alexander was moredetermined than ever to bring this new titlehome to Anlaby.

Like many top hairdressers, Alexander isin demand. He travels the world styling hairfor celebrities and models.

One minute he could be working on aphoto shoot for a creative magazine and thenext he could be performing at a hair showanywhere in the world.

“I work in London every other week, as Ihave lots of clients down there,” saidAlexander, who lives in Swanland with hisfiancée, Emma Chatterton.

“I work on lots of shows around the worldand I also teach new techniques. One day, Ican be in my salon, the next I could be flying

to Dublin for a hair show. Things get prettyhectic at times and it can put my familyunder pressure.

“My fiancée Emma is very supportive. If Iam stressed, she is there to help me.”

Aside from the jet-setting and famousfaces, Alexander loves nothing more thancoming home and working with his clients atthe salon.

He also gets many requests to create theperfect hair for brides on their wedding dayand is excited about the styles that willfeature in the coming year.

“The styles will be across the board thisyear, which I think is fantastic,” saidAlexander.

“There has been a massive influx of late1920s glamour and we are seeing a lot of the1950s coming back.

“The 1920s will show smooth sharp andelegant beauty with the dresses oozing ofCoco Chanel glamour.

“With the 1950s style you will see big hairand movement in the dresses – the cuts of thedresses will be detailed and very feminine.

“However, my favourite for this year willbe heading right back to ancient Greecewhere you will see dresses that are simply

timeless in gold, cream and ivory.

“The hair will be beautiful plaits, softbraids and stunning soft curls.”

With finer hair, a scraped back chignonwill work well as the hair will lay very flatand look very clean and the chignon can bemade out of hairpieces, giving the illusion ofhaving more hair than you actually have.

For brides with really thick, long hair, halfup and half down styles are a great choice.

“Take the side of the hair back off the faceand put a simple fresh flower in the back,”said Alexander.

When Alexander has clients who have hadshort hair for years, he often tells them tostay with what they are comfortable with, even if this means not growing their hair.

“The bride wants to feel her best and, most importantly, herself on her big day,”said Alexander.

“People don’t necessarily have to havedrastic changes for the wedding.

“As far as hair goes, the most changepeople want to go for is to grow their hair aslong as possible to give them as manyoptions as possible on their big day.”

It is really important to make sure yourhair is always in good condition. You can do

this by seeking salon advice on shampoosand treatments you use throughout the year.

Also, if you are growing your hair, it isimportant you still keep having the endstrimmed as you don’t want to split the hairshaft.

When using heat appliances – such astongs, straighteners and heated rollers – it isreally important to use heat protectionproducts as this will shut down the cuticleand protect it from fatigue.

Consultations for a wedding is paramountand practice is also needed.

“You will generally receive two to threeattempts before you master the big do for thebig day,” said Alexander.

“This avoids confusion and upset andeliminates any stumbling blocks you mighthave rather than approach it off the cuff.”

For Alexander, 2011 is going to be a busyyear, with many projects and plans in thepipeline, including a TV appearance.

Being crowned North Eastern HairdresserOf The Year in November was the icing onthe cake and finished off 2010 nicely.

“This title for a salon is like a Michelinstar for a restaurant,” said Alexander.

“My photographer, Andrew O’Toole, flewin from Australia and my models came fromItaly and the Czech Republic.

“The award was judged on a collection ofeight photographs, so I spent about a yeargetting prepared for it all.

“All my friends, family and staff were atthe awards ceremony, which was held atGrosvenor House in Mayfair, London. I waselated when the result was announced.”

However busy this year gets for Alexanderand his team, he has one date in his diary thathe has to keep free.

“Emma and I are getting married in Spainin September,” Alexander tells me.

“So I won’t be entering any awardsaround that time. It will be the mostimportant date in this year’s calendar.”

North Eastern Hairdresser Of The YearAlexander Turnbull styles a bride’s hair

With all eyes on KateMiddleton on April 29, NorthEastern Hairdresser Of TheYear Alexander Turnbull tellsus what hair style he thinksKate Middleton will go foron her big day.

“The Grecian dress theme

is the hot trend in weddingcouture, so Kate may go forsomething along these lines,”he says. “But you would haveto make the hair as timelessas the period the dress camefrom.

“I would make the hair

soft and structured, probablya very delicate curl scoopedup letting the odd strand toescape to soften the face.

“She may possibly go fora top knot with a beautifultiara or a very clean chignonwrapped into the neck.”

“The best wedding make-up is subtleand unobtrusive, yet reveals andenhances everything that’s most beautifulabout the bride’s face,” says Jemma.

“With her glowing skin, rosy cheeksand softly defined eyes, Kate has alreadymastered this natural make-up look.

“The key consideration for herwedding day will be choosing productsthat are long-lasting and formulations thatlook good in daylight, artificial light andflash photography.

“I would recreate Kate’s radiant glowby using an illuminating base, likeMannequin Skin Complexion Enhancerin Canvas, under sheer foundation.

“Line the upper and lower lash lineswith a gunmetal grey eyeliner, likeI-Conic Eyes Pencil Liner in Rock Chic, before applying lashings of Ultra PlushVolumising Mascara in Stage Black forlong, defined lashes.

make-up on your big day ...

Skin: Use a facial serum to keep skinplump and hydrated. Pat some serum intoyour skin and let it sink in for five minutesbefore applying your moisturiser as usual – itwill leave you with a healthy glow.

Foundation: Moisturise your skin well asmake-up applied to dehydrated skin willappear blotchy and uneven.

Next, use a facial primer which acts as anundercoat, providing a smooth base forfoundation, preventing shine and ensuringyour make-up lasts longer.

Then apply foundation – mineralfoundation gives a soft, natural finish, hasgreat staying power and is kind on the skin.Alternatively, use a liquid or crèmefoundation and set with a fine dusting oftranslucent powder.

For a finishing touch, use a make-upfixing spray like MAC Fix+.

Glow: A highlighter is perfect for adding a

radiant glow and illuminating your skin.

Use a cream highlighter on the higherplanes of your face – along your cheekbones, brow bones and the bridge of your nose – theidea is to mimic the effect of light on theface. Silvery colours work well with fair skintones, while peachy/gold tones complementolive skin.

Maid tomeasure

A ROYAL GIFT

Celebrate an unforgettable moment in Britain’shistory with Pandora’s Royal Wedding Charm.

This limited edition charm has been createdexclusively for the Royal Wedding this April.

This beautiful memento is hand-finished insterling stone silver with a blue stone thatsymbolises the blue sapphire in Kate Middleton’sengagement ring.

Initials have been encrusted on the back as areminder of the happy couple.

These exclusive charms are priced at £45 andare available from April to October in all stockistsnationwide, due to royal protocol.

It is seen to be a great honour tobe asked to be a bridesmaid –and a great responsibility, too.Not only do they have to lookfantastic on the day, but alsohelp out with all the major

planning and organisation that goesinto a wedding.

From arranging the hen do to helpingout with dress fittings, the bridesmaid’srole is an important one.

The number of bridesmaids you chooseshould reflect the size and style of yourday and it is a good idea to choose one tobe the “chief” or maid of honour, as she isalso known.

You’ll want total control of yourspecial day, but remember, yourbridesmaids are there to make your lifeeasier, so let them.

They can scour cities for theirbridesmaid dresses, research hotels for

guests and address invitation envelopesand write place cards.

And, on the big day itself, they can bethere at your side, helping you to getready, put your dress on and calm youdown before you step out in front of somany people, with all eyes on you.

As well as acting as your right-handwoman during the months leading up tothe wedding, the bridesmaids will alsoneed to look stunning on the big day.

This is why it’s important to take a lotof care when choosing their dresses. Theywill need to complement your dress, which you will have probably chosenvery early on in the proceedings, so youwill know the colour and style you aregoing for.

Get your bridesmaids booked in assoon as possible for fittings, so there isplenty of time for alterations if needs be.

Another thing that needs to beconsidered early is the colour scheme, as

this should be reflected in what thebridesmaids are wearing, whether this bein the dress itself or accessories.

If you haven’t yet chosen a colour, why not opt for one of this season’spopular shades?

“Stronger colours our filling our orderbooks for this summer,” said MaggieBlackband, of Belle & Bouquet, inWellingore, Lincoln.

“Peacock blue, light chocolate, huntergreen and navy are all shades which arein demand.

“With bridesmaid trends, there are a lotof chiffon gowns around in empire-style,falling to soft draped skirts in bothtea-length and full-length.

“Styles with a soft strap on oneshoulder, decorated with roses or frills, are also a new look for this season.

“Vintage is still a popular design andtaffeta is a favourite fabric.”

Miss Middleton’s younger sister,Philippa, 27, has been given therole of maid of honour.

Prince William’s futuresister-in-law, known as Pippa toher family, is no surpriseappointment as she is often seenby Kate’s side and they are said tohave a close relationship.

She has received substantialmedia attention since her sisterbegan her relationship with thePrince and is often photographedout with Kate.

After graduating in Englishfrom Edinburgh University, Pippaworked as a party planner and isrumoured to be a “gatekeeper” forher sister.

She recently raised eyebrowsover an interview conductedshortly after the engagement

announcement, with some accusingher of using her sister’s wedding asan opportunity to promote thefamily’s mail-order company,Party Pieces.

It has been rumoured Kate’sparents, Michael and CaroleMiddleton, would like theiryounger daughter to play a moreprominent role in their business inthe future.

ACCESSORIES

Finishingtouches

With so many styles, colours andfashions in bridaldresses nowavailable, therehas been a

corresponding increase in the variety ofaccessories.Veils, tiaras and headpieces are still very

popular – particularly with brides who havechosen a very simple, elegant dress design.

“Side tiaras are really big at the moment,”said Diana Osborne, owner of NathalieFrench in Scunthorpe.

“These are like headbands, but encrustedwith lots of crystals and embellishment. Theycan be worn with veils at the back, or evenwith them off-centre at the side of the head.

“We have also been getting a lot ofwomen coming into the shop asking forbirdcage tiaras, which have mini veils on theside.

“We are bringing out about four newdesigns of these in the summer.”

Accessories are often an afterthought formany brides, with the dress taking numberone priority, but they are just as importantand can finish the look perfectly.

Veils are still a popular choice for bridesand are a traditional item to complement thebridal gown.

“Lots of women are going for veils,” saidDiana.

“They can range from simple ones tothose with lace and tiny stones attached to theedges to give a bit of sparkle. They lookreally pretty.

“Those who are getting married abroaddon’t really go for veils – they seem to bepopular with those getting married inchurch.”

Not every bride will want a veil, but if youdo, think about the style and length of yourdress.

“Brides that are choosing to wear a veilare going for either a plain style with a satinedge, or one scattered with tiny crystals,” saidSuzie Bilton, of Samantha’s in Hull.

“The length of the veil depends on thedress. Most go for a waist-length veil, butsome opt for a longer one to the floor, to givea fairytale effect.

“The vintage look is big this year and a lotof brides are going for headresses with sidecombs or headbands, covered in pearls orcrystals.”

Again, the best idea is to keep a very openmind about what you want your overall lookto be and to not be afraid to try out a numberof different ideas before deciding on thefinished result.

Many brides are opting for no colourwhen it comes to accessories, going forneutral, pale shades.

“Brides are leaving the colour to theirbridesmaids and guests,” said Diana.

“Purple and burgundy are two shades thatare in fashion at the moment.”

As well as pretty, delicate accessories for

the hair, lots of brides are spending timelooking for the perfect shoes for their bigday.

Bling is big when it comes to footwear –and it’s important to budget.

“We sell an awful lot of shoes covered inSwarovski and Dubai crystals, which retailbetween £250 and £299,” said Diana, whotells me that some women choose their shoesfirst and work around this when they startlooking for their dress.

“Brands that are popular at the momentinclude Benjamin Adams, which has createdan iconic shoe called Catherine, to celebratethe royal wedding.

“This is a limited edition style, adornedwith lavish crystals, with an elegantcombination of soft mesh inspired by thealluring style and sophistication of KateMiddleton.

“Paradox is another popular brand, as allof its shoes have a cushioned sole, which isimportant as a bride will be on her feet allday.

“We get a small number of women whowant flat shoes, but most want heels for theirbig day to give them an extra few inches.”

JEWELLERY

A gift to treasureRIGHT: Nikki Blowers, of Ian Blowers Jewellers inSavile Street, Hull, with some of their jewellery.ABOVE: A pendant from the Nota Bene range

PICTURE: PETER HARBOUR

For a young bridesmaid, they could add piecesto the pendant when aspecial birthday comesaround“ ”

As well as the dress and thevenue, accessories, jewellery and gifts are allimportant things that mustbe considered in therun-up to the big day.

As a thank you to the bridal party and thegroomsmen, many people show theirappreciation with a piece of jewellery.

Whether this be cufflinks or a watch forthe men or a necklace or earrings for thewomen, it makes a lovely gift that can betreasured forever and offers a lasting memoryof a special day.

Jeweller Nikki Blowers, of Ian BlowersJewellers in Hull, has been showcasing herown range – Nota Bene – at selectedwedding fayres, which makes a great gift forbrides and bridesmaids.

Ian Blowers Jewellers has always soldhand-made pieces of diamond jewellery, which is what Nikki wanted to get involvedwith when she joined the business.

The collection of diamond jewellery at theshop is top of the range, hand-made 18ct goldand diamond set jewellery, a tradition whichis continued in the Nota Bene range.

Nikki’s Nota Bene designs offer areasonable price point so her customers canadd to their chosen pieces and build theircollection piece by piece.

“I wanted to design and develop thecollection myself” said Nikki. “I came upwith the idea of designing a few key piecesthat could be mixed and matched to createdifferent looks for different occasions .

“Working in the industry, I’m alwayskeeping an eye on current trends and therewere lots of interchangeable jewellery rangescoming out, which I loved the idea of.

“But there was a gap in the market for thissort of jewellery which is hand-made,exclusive, luxurious and modern.

I sketch out my ideas and then work

alongside our craftmen at our Hatton Gardenwork shop to hand produce the finisheditems.”

Nikki decided to design elegant, contemporary pendants with interchangeabledrop charms that could also be attached toearrings or a bracelet.

Tiny hearts and flowers were just some ofthe ideas, set with diamonds, rubies, pearlsand sapphires and bespoke pieces can bedesigned for something totally unique andpersonal.

“I worked hard to get the designs right andconsulted the guys at the workshop to see if itwould work,” said Nikki.

“We devised a mechanism that wouldattach the charms to the jewellery that wassecure, but didn’t look too bulky – wewanted to keep all the designs delicate.”

Nikki had her first meeting with themanufacturers just over a year ago and byspring last year, she was selling her firstitems.

“Designing my own range was amazing,”said Nikki. “When the first pieces wereready, it was so good to see my designs turninto reality. What was even better was whencustomers came in to buy the jewellery.

“I’d already mentioned to a few peoplewho had popped into the shop that I wasbringing out my own range and they couldn’twait to have a look.

“As soon as we got the first Nota Benerange in, they sold out.”

Nikki took Nota Bene to her first weddingfair last year and she found that brides lovedit.

Because of the different pendants that canbe attached, and the lower price points, Nikkirealised it was a great gift for bridesmaidsand was ideal for bridal jewellery.

“A pendant with just a couple of dropswould be a good choice for bridesmaids,”said Nikki.

“The idea of the collection is that peoplecan add to it and build up their jewellery. Fora young bridesmaid, they could add pieces tothe pendant when a special birthday comesaround.”

In addition to gifts for members of thebridal party, brides and grooms usually senda special gift to each other either the nightbefore their wedding, or in the morning –often accompanied with a bottle ofChampagne.

Popular choices for the groom includecufflinks or a watch.

Nikki’s brother, Mark, followed his fatherinto the industry some years ago, specialisingin the Ian Blowers Jeweller’s watch business– which deals in some of the world’s finestpre-owned wrist watches.

“Brides will have an idea of what type ofwatch her husband would like and it’s a greatgift for him to wear on the day,” said Nikki.

“Diamond-set cufflinks are another giftidea which can be given to the groom thenight before his wedding.”

When it comes to a gift for the bride, thereare plenty of options.

A lot of brides will have chosen whatjewellery they are going to wear by the timethe night before comes around, so many menchoose something they can wear afterwards.

“A single solitaire diamond pendant orcross are popular among brides, as arediamond stud earrings,” said Nikki, who tellsme diamonds and pearls are often chosen bybrides when it comes to wedding jewellery.

“With Nota Bene pendants, items can bechosen to fit the theme of the wedding andalso added after the wedding day, perhaps onspecial occasions such as anniversaries.

“A diamond-set heart and pearl dropswould be a good choice to add to a simplependant as a momento from the weddingday.”

With all the planning that goes into thewedding, brides often think about their dressbefore any sort of jewellery or accessories, but it’s the small things that give that extrabit of sparkle.

“It’s very much down to personal taste, but most brides tend to go for simple andelegant jewellery for their big day,” saidNikki.

“If you go for chunky jewellery, it cantake away from the dress. When we speak tobrides, they let us know about the style of thedress and what the neckline is like. This way,we can see what will suit.

“Bridal jewellery is predominantlydiamond and pearl, with white gold a currenttrend.

“Although the rule is, generally, to keepthings simple, more women are going forvintage-style earrings.

“We also get a lot of commissions forbespoke pieces, with some inspiration fromhigh street costume jewellery. People seesomething they like the look of, but want itmade in precious metal and diamond.”

THE PERFECT VENUE

A stately settingW

ith all the whispersand talk of theupcoming royalwedding and allthe touchesinvolved, more

brides-to-be are planning their big daywith a grand theme in mind.

Although other couples won’t be marryinginto the monarchy – with a ceremony atWestminster Abbey followed by a receptionat Buckingham Palace, like Kate and William– they still want this prestigious influence.

That’s why stately homes across thecountry are becoming a popular choice forthose who are organising their weddingvenue.

One person who has noticed this trend isactress Cindy Marshall-Day, who opens upher Georgian country house for bespokewedding celebrations.

Cindy has been mistress of Walcot Hall, near Alkborough in North Lincolnshire, since2004.

After restoring the Grade II-listed propertyto its former glory, she has made it one of themost exclusive wedding venues in the county– and beyond.

Not least because she only allows 12weddings a year to be held at her magnificenthome.

“I think country house weddings are thenumber one want for brides-to-be,” saysCindy.

“With Walcot Hall, although we only hold12 weddings a year, we have about 30enquiries a week.”

Walcot Hall is situated in the middle ofthe country – perfect for couples in the northor south.

And with its close proximity to twointernational airports, its rural location issurprisingly convenient.

“It was never our plan to have weddingshere, but after we’d finished therefurbishment, which took two years, peoplekept asking me if they could have theirweddings here.

“We decided we would do just 12 a year,”says Cindy, who has teamed up with ForestPines to offer preferential rates to Walcot’swedding guests.

“I could do one every weekend becausethe demand is so high, but it’s my home andI wanted to keep it exclusive for the couple.

“I found a real niche in the market for anexclusive, bespoke place to get married.”

Originally from London, Cindy was aboarder at Cranborne Chase, a girls’ schoolin Dorset.

“Then I went to finishing school and it

just about finished me off,” she laughs.

“I wasn’t very academic, but I was veryartistic and I rode horses as a child,” saysCindy, who is a keen horse rider.

She met husband Tony 13 years ago inLos Angeles and, after settling back inEngland, the hunt for a horse-friendly countryhouse started.

“I got a job working on Crossroads – notthe one with Benny in it, the new one – andbecause of my love for horses, we needed tofind somewhere that was very pro-horse,”says Cindy, whose own wedding wasfeatured in OK! magazine.

At the time she was a hostess on ThePrice Is Right and the magazine devotedseveral pages to her big day.

“We saw the house in Country Life and

came to see it, although I’d already decided Iwanted it,” she says. “We didn’t do anystructural changes because the house is GradeII-listed, but we had to refurbish it from topto bottom, as well as doing an enormousamount in the garden. I didn’t do any actingfor two years, I just worked on the house.”

With floristry training under her belt (adegree in floristry design from Bishop BurtonCollege, where she also took a cookerycourse), Cindy can offer brides a hassle-freewedding.

“The idea is to make it as easy for thebrides as possible,” she says. “They come inand we can get everything sorted in a coupleof hours.”

THE NIGHT BEFOREROYAL fiancée Kate Middleton isrumoured to have booked herself into aluxury hotel for the night before herwedding ceremony.

Miss Middleton is expected to spend herlast evening as a single woman at theGoring in Belgravia, central London, whichwas a favourite of the Queen Mother.

It is thought the family and friends ofPrince William’s fiancée have alreadymade plans to stay at the five-star hotelwhich celebrated its centenary last year, according to the Daily Mail.

The Edwardian establishment is a shortwalk from Buckingham Palace, where thewedding reception and evening dinnercelebrating the marriage will be held.

William’s mother Diana, Princess ofWales spent the night before her weddingat Clarence House, the then home of theQueen Mother, marrying the Prince ofWales the next day – July 29, 1981.

Fashion designers David Emanuel andElizabeth Emanuel, who created thePrincess’s famous wedding dress, writingin their book A Dress For Diana, said:“When we arrived at Clarence House, wefound Diana relaxed in a white towellingdressing gown and having her hair andmake-up done, while her bridesmaidswatched television.”

But they added that the relaxed moodsoon changed: “The whole thing was runlike a military operation. We hadclipboards, we had guys telling everyonethat at so many hundred hours, Lady Dianashould get into the dress; at so manyhundred hours she should descend to thecarriage, and so on.”

If Miss Middleton stays at the Goring, itis likely it will also become a hive ofactivity, with a team of people preparingthe bride for her big day on April 29.

Chief executive Jeremy Goring is thefourth generation of his family to run thehotel established by his great-grandfatherOtto Richard Goring in 1910.

When first opened, each bedroom haden suite bathrooms – claimed to be a firstanywhere in the world – and rooms costseven shillings and six pence.

Today, the price of a room with a queenbed is more than £400, but guests can stayin even greater luxury with costs rising tofour figures.

The hotel is a favourite with foreignroyalty and other famous guests includeTerry Wogan and Vanessa Redgrave.

into the elegant and spacious dining room, where the ceremony takes place.

After they have taken their vows, thehappy couple walk down a path lined withcandles and crystals across a bridge lit withfairylights, to enjoy champagne and canapeson the Fountain Terrace.

Small wedding parties can dine in thehouse and larger parties (Cindy caters for upto 150) take their seats in a marquee in thegarden.

Cindy can do everything from the floraltable settings to the bride’s bouquet, in freshflowers or silk, and she will never repeat adesign.

“Again, everything has to be exclusive,”

she says. “And it has to be right. When I firststarted, the service we received from outsidesuppliers was very disappointing at times.

“I also have a brilliant weddingco-ordinator, Carol Davies, who co-ordinatesthe whole event and I just do the fun thingslike style the venue and create the flowers.

“On her big day, the bride should not tobe asked questions about where peopleshould be and what is happening next. She isthere to look beautiful, not worry about thelogistics.”

To relax, Cindy loves spending time withher friends.

“I will do a big lasagne if I have a lot offriends coming over,” she says.

“I love Sunday lunches and I absolutelylove my Aga.”

And she adores Walcot Hall.

“I did a Country House Studies degree atthe University Of Hull because I love countryhouses, but especially Walcot.

“Imagine writing essays on the differencebetween Baroque and Palladian architecture. Iam passionate about Walcot and keeping italive, but it costs a lot of money.

“The reason for doing the weddings is tobe able to maintain the house and make sureit is safeguarded for future generations.”

As much as people like to saymen take very little time to getready and choose an outfit, they don’t. And especially notwhen it comes to theirwedding suit.

Like the bride with her gown, the groom willhave to get his outfit sorted early.

Getting the groom’s clothing to match thechosen colours of the wedding party is crucial.

His outfit will have to complement the bride’sdress and work with the colours of thebridesmaids’ dresses, flowers and decorationsrunning through the day.

Once a colour scheme has been chosen andagreed by both the groom and bride-to-be, it’stime to get measured up.

If the groom, the best man, his ushers andpage boys are going for the same suits – which isusually the case – you can either go together to trythem on or just gather everyone’s measurements.

Grooms this year are expected to take a stepback in time when it comes to their wedding dayattire.

For those couples who are planning a traditionalwedding, you will be pleased to hear the classictop hats and tails are coming back into fashion.

“We have had a number of requests for tophats, gloves and tails,” said Maurice McDougall, manager at Len Beck tailors, in Hull.

“We are seeing a renaissance with morningwear and this year will see classic outfits in dovegrey and black stripes.

“Grooms have been asking us for ruches – aloose tie – and cravats, too, to match theirwaistcoats.”

Whether you are having your suits made

especially for the day, or are planning to hire them, you will need to plan ahead.

Whatever look the groom wishes to go for, be ittraditional Edwardian-style frock coats, morningwear, dinner suits or perhaps a lounge suit, all canbe found in a range of colours.

Waistcoats and cravats also come in a variety ofshades and fabrics, with plain, patterned orembroidered designs to choose from.

Materials can be matched up with bridesmaids’dresses if that’s what you desire.

Ivory is tipped to be a popular colour optionamong grooms this summer, but for those whowant something in a different shade, you canbrighten up with a waistcoat.

“Len Beck offers a great selection ofwaistcoats, as we hire from two differentcompanies, so lots of colours are available,” saidMaurice.

“Lots of couples want a colour theme to runthroughout, so we ask them to bring in the fabricfrom the bridesmaids gowns and we can match itperfectly to the groom’s outfit, creating a ruche orhandkerchief.”

Some wedding shops also offer a full range ofaccessories to hire, including top hats, gloves andfob watches, although these aren’t as popular atthe moment.

“Men usually go for what they can afford andwe don’t have many requests for old-fashionedaccessories such as watches and canes,” saidChristine Clapham, sales advisor at Toppers &Tails, in Lincoln.

“At the moment, men are going for morningsuits with tails – mainly in grey. This colour seemsto have overtaken black and is a shade that’s indemand at the moment.

ALL THE GROOM’S MENPrince William has chosen to have hisbrother Harry at his side as his best man onhis big day, St James’s Palace have said.

Kate Middleton’s maid of honour at thewedding on April 29 will be her sister,Philippa.

The couple have selected fourbridesmaids and two page boys – two ofwhom are the Prince’s godchildren.

The bridesmaids are Lady LouiseWindsor, 7 , Margarita Armstrong-Jones, 8,Eliza Lopes, 3, and three-year-old Gracevan Cutsem – Prince William’sgoddaughter.

The page boys are WilliamLowther-Pinkerton, 10, and eight-year-oldTom Pettifer. Tom is the godson of PrinceWilliam.

Grooms in royal weddings traditionallychoose a “supporter” instead of a best man. However, Prince William opted to have abest man rather than a supporter, a StJames’ Palace spokesman confirmed.

When royal bridegrooms select theirsupporters there is usually more than one, with a chief supporter taking the main role, but because William has only chosen onecompanion on his wedding day he decidedto use the term best man.

The Prince of Wales chose hisbrother Prince Andrew to be his mainsupporter when he married LadyDiana Spencer at St Paul’s Cathedralin 1981.

Harry, who is training to flyApache attack helicopters, is likely tohave the role of planning William’sstag do.

On the wedding day he could be taskedwith looking after Kate’s weddingring. He may also have to give aspeech at the privatereception following theceremony.

Harry said he was“delighted” about theengagement when it wasannounced.

He said: “I amdelighted that my brotherhas popped the question. Itmeans I get a sister, which I have alwayswanted.”

The brothers are onlytwo years apart and havebeen close since theirmother died in 1997.

After the engagementwas announced, bookieshad tipped Thomas vanStraubenzee – one ofWilliam’s closest friends –to be a supporter.

Mr van Straubenzee, also known as “Van”, metthe prince at Ludgrove PrepSchool and he accompaniedWilliam on his first official tour toNew Zealand. William and Harryare patrons of a memorial funddedicated to Tom’s brother Henrywho was killed in a car crash in 2002.

KEEPING WITH TRADITIONWith speculation still surroundingwho will make Kate Middleton’swedding dress, it appears her fiancéPrince William’s attire will be easierto pick.

William is expected to followroyal tradition and marry in militarydress with his RAF uniform likely tobe the one selected.

It is reported Savile Row tailorsGieves & Hawkes, which alreadysupplies suits to the royal, has beenchosen to make the outfit.

Over the decades many royal menhave married in military uniform with

the prince’s father and grandfather, the Prince of Wales and Duke ofEdinburgh respectively, both walkingup the aisle in Royal Navy dress.

But William is an RAF officerserving as a helicopter pilot with theSearch and Rescue Force (Sarf) atRAF Valley in Anglesey, NorthWales.

Flight Lieutenant Wales graduatedas a fully operational Sarf pilot inSeptember last year and is known tofind his job stimulating and exciting.

The prince will one day be head ofthe Armed Forces and so retains his

commissions as officers in the RoyalNavy and the Army, within theHousehold Cavalry.

But it is expected he will chooseto wear the RAF uniform inrecognition of his present role.

William is a Knight of the Orderof the Garter and on his wedding dayis likely to wear the Order’s bluesash, with its attached badge, andstar.

The royal has received onemilitary honour and will proudlywear his Queen’s Golden JubileeMedal.

“They are matching this with pale lilacs, greys andivory on their waistcoat.

“We have also had a lot of interest in bright shadesfor the summer months, such as fuschia pink and whatwe call ‘Cadbury’s purple’.”

On the day itself, it’s important for the groom to lookgreat and like the bride, he can indulge in somepampering treatments before the big day to get himlooking his best.

He may want to join a gym to tone up and get rid of

that beer belly before the big day. The photographs fromthe wedding will be around for years to come, so he willwant to look in shape.

Also, as much as men turn their noses up at the idea, they could book in and have a massage at a beautyretreat to get them relaxed for the wedding day.

There are many spas and beauty salons that offertreatments for men and a calming massage or facial canleave the groom-to-be feeling refreshed.

And remember, all eyes won’t just be on the bride . . .

Lots of couples want acolour theme to runthroughout, so we askthem to bring in fabricfrom the bridesmaidsgowns and we canmatch it perfectly to thegroom’s outfit

A SUMMER WEDDING

The prospect of planning awedding is exciting and fun initself, but this year willcertainly see a brand new rangeof options and possibilities onoffer to brides and

grooms-to-be.This will make the decision process a little

harder, but the prospect of a magnificentwedding, a near certainty.

Last year saw the explosion of vintage –from dresses to headpieces, and from invitesto transport.

Vintage was the key word and allowednearly-weds across the country to experimentand add their own stamp, breaking away fromtraditional wedding style, while remainingromantic. This was a huge success allowingbrides to combine family heirlooms, birdcageveils, lace gloves and ornate shabby-chicdecor into a theme, which will look great inyears to come.

As with most couples, the balance needs tobe struck. A wedding that is contemporaryand on-trend – yet looks timeless in thephotos – is a good choice.

It’s something you will look back on inyears to come with pride and a real sense ofidentity throughout, without the regret of apoor hairstyle or dress choice.

This year is all about flexibility. Thechoices are like never before allowing you togo as mad as you like, or remain within thetraditional.

Some of the biggest trends can beimplemented in a way that is apparent, yetsubtle, or obvious and loud – it’s all up to youand the style of wedding you want to achieve.

With a new breed of wedding becomingmore evident in the media throughprogrammes such as Here Comes The Brideand Big Fat Gypsy Weddings, the trend forbigger and better is fast growing.

We guarantee to giveyou peace of mind fromthe planning to the bigday. You can rely on usto organise every detail, knowing that we careabout your big day asmuch as you do.

Come in and discuss your plans to experience firsthand our philosophy of “first impressions count”.

But if it’s not to your taste, simply adaptand stay true to your own personalities andpreferences.

The biggest fashion trends for summer2011 include an array of exciting weddingalternatives from old memory, “scrapbook”style wedding stationery to ribbonedaccessories and fluffy feather wedding gowns.

Romantic ruffles are set to be huge in theworld of bridesmaid fashion, in rich sultrydamsons, lilacs and greys, with shorterhemlines, but maximum sculptured shape.

For perfect save-the-date cards, invites andtable cards, think layering.

Beautiful, patterned cards layered with

plainer colours, ribbon and quirky fonts willall ensure your wedding stationery is cuttingedge in the wedding trend stakes, adding areal sense of fun from the minute your guestsrealise you’re getting married. Do yourresearch into scrapbooking for a vintage,memory-book feel. Too much of the wrongthing could leave your invites looking messyand thrown-together.

Ribbons are the ultimate addition towedding couture this year, whether worn as aheadband with a sleek Audrey Hepburnbeehive style or around the waist, even asbows dotted around your dress. It is thewedding fashion hot pick for 2011 if youaspire to a sleek, classic themed wedding.

Ribbon can also be integrated elsewhere, for example, criss-cross wrapped around yourcake for a modern twist on the traditionaldecoration.

If you favour something a little morecutting edge, ruffles and feathers are the wayto go.

For striking impact, opt for a dress with afull, voluminous skirt made from chiffonruffles or ostrich feathers.

For something more subtle, the look can beachieved through your bridesmaids, perhapsby an asymmetric ruffled shoulder dress or an

ostrich feather purse. As a continuation fromlast year, the emphasis really is on creating awedding which is bespoke and personal toyou both. For every aspect of the day, thinkhow you can do it differently. Special littletouches like giving a box of fragrant teas andhome-made biscuits, or some miniatureliqueur bottles with hand-made truffles asfavours, instead of the fail-safe sugaredalmond, is one way of adding your ownpersonal twist.

Overall, let your creativity shine and you’llundoubtedly have a super stylish wedding.

THE JOURNAL39

Wedding expert PHILLIPA BARRASS, of KellingtonWeddings, explains how you can keep your guestsentertained throughout your big day ...

Unfortunately, it is often thecase that weddingentertainment is left as anafterthought, with thequick realisation that thereis a gap in proceedings

during the big day or there is the dreadedprospect of silence during the reception. This is usually where panic sets in and the

long lost cousin who does a bit of DJingsteps in.

It doesn’t have to be like this. There is avariety of musical and theatrical optionsavailable which will enhance the theme ofyour wedding and keep guests entertained.

As a starting point for deciding on whatentertainment you would like, think about thetheme of your wedding.

If the wedding day is quirky – with thegroom and best men dressed in fitted suits, skinny ties and trilbys, while the bride andbridesmaids show off bright 50s-style teadresses – you could consider a live band

playing your favourite music. If yourwedding day is classic and sleek, yet with avintage feel, think about hiring a swing bandwhich will cover traditional big band musicand Rat-Pack classics.

Although it’s important to choose a stylewhich you like, remember your guests, too.

Motown and soul bands are great forgetting everyone involved, without leavingany of the older guests feeling uncomfortableabout going up for a dance.

It’s a really good idea to check out theband prior to your wedding and to alsoconfirm their attire.

To have a string quartet dressed in black1920s flapper-style dresses and headpieceswould look great for a black and whitewedding or if you are hiring a tribute band, ensure they dress as the band they areimitating would have done.

It really will make all the difference anddemonstrate your attention to detail.

Not only do you need to think about the

evening disco, but you may want to considersome background music while your guestsenjoy their reception drinks.

A simple soloist playing a harp, cello orguitar is a great idea and usually reasonablypriced for an hour’s set.

What would also make a really great touchwould be to have them play your first dancelive and acoustically. That will have everyonereaching for the tissues.

Casinos are another great entertainmentoption, especially if you are organising yourwedding around a Las Vegas theme.

Most games are quick and easy to learnconsisting of black jack, roulette and pokerand the croupiers will be happy to advise youand your guests on which games to choose, whether your guests are novices orexperienced.

ENTERTAINMENTGet theparty started

At the end of the night, prizes such as abottle of Champagne can be awarded to thosewho have won the most.

One of the newest and most enjoyableentertainment experiences has to be theall-involved music video starring the bride andgroom and all of your guests.

Set to a music track of your choice, videographers are available to recordindividuals and groups singing along. Theywill then edit it afterwards to produce a video.

They can be as serious or as ridiculous asthey like, but the finished product can betreasured and brought out to embarrass, too.

Wedding entertainment can really add thatextra something to your wedding day, so it is avery important aspect worth thinking about andwith such an enormous selection ofentertainment options available to you, you cango as extravagant as you like.

Wedding entertainment can really add that extra something to your big day.

BOOSTING THE COFFERSThe royal wedding could give the Britisheconomy a £620 million boost, retailresearchers have claimed.

Sales of engagement merchandisealone could be worth between £12 millionand £18 million to retailers, according toresearch company Verdict.

Shops and businesses across thecountry are already striving to cash in onthe 29th April wedding between KateMiddleton and Prince William withcommemorative mugs, spoons, calendars, clothing and postcards already on sale.

Verdict’s consulting director NeilSaunders said: “Although times havechanged since the last big royalengagement of Prince Charles and LadyDiana, many people will still be keen tobuy some form or keepsake or mementoand retailers will rush to capitalise on themerchandising opportunities.”

Mr Saunders predicted that in the UKwedding-related merchandise sales couldeasily surpass £26 million, with groceryand food retailers likely to see sales inexcess of £360 million as the countrycelebrates the royal wedding.

According to the consulting director anestimated additional £216 million couldbe added to that once the benefits oftourism and travel are considered.

“In total that means we are looking ata £620m consumer spending boost,” MrSaunders added.

GIFTS

Lots of brides and grooms put awedding wish-list inside theirinvitations, telling their guestswhat they would like to begiven as presents. Or, the giftlist is lodged either with a

relative or friend who will circulate it toguests and others who wish to givesomething. The bride and groom-to-be can also pay a

visit to a department store or wedding shopand set up a list there.

Then those wishing to give a gift mayperuse the list and sign their names againstthe item that appeals to them or comeswithin their budget.

Some register with independent ornational retailers and you can check withthese stores which gifts are still available topurchase.

This is a clever way of ensuring thepresents are not being duplicated and alsothe shop knowing who bought a particulargift, and when, without the couple knowinguntil it is delivered to the reception.

Lots of these gift shops will also wrapbefore they deliver.

However, you may want to buy thehappy couple something that is unique tothem and this will take time andconsideration.

Wedding gifts are traditionally items thathelp the couple set up home and includethings such as kettles, toasters, foodprocessors, electric tin openers and mixers, orhousehold goods such as table linen andtowels.

But with so many couples setting up homebefore they get married these days, these sortof gifts are no longer the norm.

A lot of people will ask for vouchers fortheir favourite store, so they can buy anyhousehold items they may not have.

Another current trend for wedding giftsseems to be currency for the honeymoondestination. This could be used for spendingmoney.

When you set out to select a wedding gift, always give serious consideration to buyingsomething you would like to receive. Don’tspend more than you can afford – no onewould wish this. If several of you areattending a mutual friend’s wedding and all ofyou are a touch short of funds, club together.Your joint contributions could well buysomething really spectacular.

Finally, don’t leave the shoppingexpedition till the last minute – it will justmake you buy something in a panic, orsomething you cannot really afford.

Take time to choose and you can then besure your selection will be the right one for allthe right reasons.

MENU

Once the venue is set foryour big day, you needto think about whatfood you want to feedyour guests.Three-course meals

seem to be the tradition, with perhaps abuffet at the reception for people tonibble between dancing.Like most elements of the wedding day,

lots of people are thinking of ways they canadd a modern twist, without breaking thebank or being too quirky.

When it comes to wedding menus, it’sdown to what the couple want and the budgetneeds to be considered.

Many venues set a price per head, whichcan get costly if you want a fancy packageand have lots of guests.

Another option is to hire caterers, who canoften help you come up with some differentideas for food.

“The ideas that have worked really well atweddings this year are based around a coupleof themes,” said Angela Trickett, of Dine OnThe Rowe, in Beverley, East Yorkshire, thatcaters for weddings.

“One is having hamper baskets for eachtable, with food such as a joint of roast ham,a large sourdough loaf, lots of salads, olives, dips, roast vegetables and tartlets.

“The twist is that, in each basket, there isan apron, chef’s hat, wooden board, carvingknife and fork, and a menu with instructionstied with a ribbon.

“Someone at each table has to play chef, which gets all the guests socialising andinteracting and it’s great theatre.

“Another – using the same principles asabove, but with a hot meal with different

courses – is that, for the main course, wesend out a board with a big rib steak of beef.

“The beef is garnished and can beaccompanied by a choice of sides. This alsogets everyone talking and interacting.

“This whole idea of getting tablesinvolved in the serving of food revolvesaround the bride and groom’s theme, butadds some great theatre into the day and thewedding breakfast.”

At both of the weddings Dine On TheRowe has created like this, there was a photoshoot for the chefs before the meal.

The interaction at each of the tables wasgreat and people who have not met beforeopened up to make for a great day.

The idea for this theme was developedafter working with White Rose Polo Club, inNorth Cliffe, Yorkshire. Angela and her teamcater for its Summit Media Cup every year.

The food and menus were created at theclient’s request and they thought it wouldmake a fantastic idea for weddings.

“There is no limit to what sort of foodcould be used in this theme,” said Angela.

“It would work well with Moroccan food, such as a slow-cooked lamb shoulder, or fora Greek theme – slow-cooked shoulder ofpork caramelised with lemon and rosemary.”

Before a wedding menu is chosen, flavours and tastes are discussed.

The couple can also rest assured that thefinest ingredients will be used and will belocal if possible.

With Dine On The Rowe’s themed menus,

Food for thought

the food and theatre become an important partof the special day.

Angela said: “Each event we do is designedon a bespoke basis, so we can work aroundany ideas the couple may have.”

The newwave ofweddings

From Las Vegas-style weddings held at night to gay ceremonies in church, the rulesregarding marriage are getting ever more relaxed. SUSAN GRIFFIN reports on thenew wave of weddings

If you’ve always fancied marrying inthe moonlight or declaring yourvows as the dawn rises, it’s time topop the champagne. Archaicrestrictions relating to whenweddings can take place are

expected to be lifted later this year.As it stands, a 175-year-old law dating

back to the Marriage Act of 1836 preventsweddings taking place outside the hours of8am and 6pm, but the Government hasannounced that it is determined to returnpower to the people.

“We don’t believe that government shouldtell people the time of the day when they canand can’t get married or register a civilpartnership,” explains a Home Officespokesman.

The changes affecting civil ceremonies willcome about thanks to the Your Freedomwebsite, created to find out which laws andregulations the public wants to see abolished. The result is the Protection Of Freedoms Bill, expected to gain Royal Assent by late thisyear or early next year.

“The laws regarding wedding times areold-fashioned and date back to the time beforeartificial lighting,” says Paul Stacey of MyOK! Wedding, an iPhone planning app.

“They were put in place to ensure vicarscould identify the bride and groom. It’s abouttime they were brought up to date.”

Considering that romance has historicallybeen well-served by night, the change couldallow lovers’ imaginations to run wild.

Hotel chains are already predicting anincrease in evening weddings, both indoorsand out, when guests could toast the couple ina candlelight ceremony or perhaps against abackdrop of fireworks.

And considering how the British love theirlong summer evenings, it seems likely itwon’t take long for invitations to state “fromdark till dawn”.

But spontaneous lovers, drunk on love andlooking for a Las Vegas-style wedding, should take heed. Twenty-four hour walk-inchapels of love sadly aren’t yet on the cards. At least 15 days’ advance notice will still berequired.

SERIOUS VOWSThe last significant change relating toweddings was in 2002, when rules werealtered in order to widen the choice of venue. And for many people, an extension of thepermitted hours can’t come soon enough.

According to wedding specialist NicolaStoddart, the introduction of a more flexibleapproach will do more than just change thelighting, it could have a profound effect onwedding planning.

“At the moment, couples are waitinganything up to two years to book dates atsome very popular venues and this shouldprovide more availability,” she says.

It could also have a positive impact on thepurse strings.

“Venues may offer discounts if people

marry at less popular times and couples maywish to host smaller receptions, involvingcanapes, rather than a full blown sit-downdinner, which will cut costs dramatically,”adds Nicola.

But with freedom comes responsibilityand the post-ceremony party may needfurther thought if guests are to be allowed toparty without persecution.

A licence to get married doesn’tautomatically include a licence to drink. So ifyou want to get married at 3am or 6am, yourvenue will need a 24-hour alcohol licence.

Carolyn Bavister, owner of Danby CastleEvents in North Yorkshire, says: “Ourpremises’ licence ends at midnight, so wewould need to apply for an extension.

“We’d also need to check whether we’dneed a health and safety risk-assessmentregarding the suitability of ceremonies beingheld at night.”

But these are merely practicalconsiderations and, while Carolyn imaginesthere will be little call for 3am weddings, shesays she “can see the romance in gettingmarried at midnight”.

Adam Huckle’s film company regularlyrecords weddings and he knows just howpressurised the day can become.

He agrees the change could make lifeeasier, saying: “If couples know they must bemarried by 6pm, it can sometimes be verylimiting.

“Delays to weddings are not uncommonand this can result in hurrying through aservice to make sure it meets the deadline.”

He says many beautiful wedding venuesbecome even more atmospheric andpicturesque as the day progresses.

“The Roman Baths in central Bath is agorgeous venue in the daytime, but it comesinto its own when it becomes dark, illuminated by torchlight,” he says.

GAY WEDDINGSFor now the timings of weddings in Anglicanchurches are still fixed, though the Church

could be ringing in its own changes byallowing same-sex couples to marry inreligious buildings.

“Weddings are important ritual momentsin people’s lives,” says Peter Edge, professorof law at Oxford Brookes University, whohas been campaigning for civil partnershipsto be allowed in places of worship.

“The current rules disadvantage religiouscommunities supportive of same-sexpartnerships. A simple change like allowingregistered places of worship to be used forcivil partnerships could make an importantdifference.”

Currently, civil partnership ceremonies, which were introduced in 2005, can’t containany religious element but industry insiderswelcome the proposed plans.

“There are plenty of gay people who arealso religious, so it makes sense that somewould want to have their ceremony in a placeof worship,” says Adam Huckle.

While some may consider these reforms tobe radical, the rules mark a more relaxedattitude to wedding ceremonies and place theemphasis firmly on the wishes of the couple, which is, after all, what the day is all about.

DESIGNERWEDDINGSA round-the-clock licence opens up thepossibility of all kinds of new types ofweddings. Kate Thompson, ofwww.confetti.co.uk, suggests a few options:

Star-gazing wedding: For keenastronomers, a night-time wedding ceremonywould be a romantic opportunity to star-gazeas couples take their vows. Guests could evenbe invited to view the couple’s own star, which they’ve had named for the occasion(www.starregistry.co.uk).

A midsummer night’s dream: The courseof true love could run smooth with acandlelit, dream-like midnight wedding in aforest surrounded by loved ones and nature.Visit www.thenewforest.co.uk for inspiration.

Dawn risers: Sun worshippers could holdtheir wedding ceremony at dawn to catch thesunrise as they take their vows. All you needis a decent horizon and forgiving guests.

A real wedding breakfast: Coupleswanting to keep the party going as long aspossible could marry early in the morning sothat the traditionally-named weddingbreakfast could be just that – a lavishbreakfast of croissants, pastries and tropicalfruits, or even a full English served withBucks Fizz.

A 24-hour wedding: Moroccan weddingstraditionally last for seven days, Hinduweddings for two, but in England mostreceptions finish relatively early in the night.New regulations could see a shift to afestival-style 24-hour wedding with thecelebrations kicking off in the morning andnot ending until sunrise.

As romance has historicallybeen well-served by night, lovers’ imaginations couldsoon be able to run wild

It’s not every day that someone is asked tocontribute to a royal wedding and forcake-maker Dawn Blunden, it was a dreamcome true. In 2005, she was commissioned tomake the cake for the wedding of the Princeof Wales to Camilla Parker Bowles.

The opportunity arose through her son, Darren, whoruns an outside catering company as well as owning arestaurant, Brambles in Dorset, and has cooked forPrince Charles for the past six years.

“He mentioned that his mother owned and ran asmall cake shop in the middle of the countryside,” said54-year-old Dawn, who owns Sophisticake in WoodhallSpa, Lincolnshire.

“About a year before the wedding, I received a phonecall asking me if I would send some cake down for thePrince to try. He liked it and, from there, I was asked tosupply three types of little cakes to be sold in the giftshop at Highgrove.

“I made fruit cake, which is a family recipe that goesback five generations, apple cake, which was a recipefrom one of the Prince’s former nannies and a spongecake.”

After the success of her little cakes, Dawn wasinvited to a meeting at Clarence House to discuss theroyal wedding cake, where she was up againstwell-known names such as cake-maker Jane Asher andchef Anton Mosimann.

“Designs and ideas were discussed and I advised andlistened to what was required,” said Dawn.

“At the end of the meeting, I was told I would bemaking the wedding cake for the future king ofEngland.”

For such a huge project, Dawn was only given fourweeks to make the 17st fruit cake – which included400lbs of dried fruit, 36 bottles of alcohol and astaggering 1,080 eggs.

“We were knocking on the doors of every farm in thearea, buying up eggs,” laughs Dawn, who tells me thecake took 130 hours to decorate.

“I think all the chickens in Lincolnshire wereworking overtime.

“In the initial meeting, they were concerned about thesize of the project, as we were only a tiny workshoptucked away in a village arcade.

“We had to make 1,500 cakes for the gift shop and2,500 slices to go into commemorative tins for theguests at the wedding, as well as the huge weddingcake.”

As soon as Dawn found out she had secured thecommission, she contacted her business partner at thetime, sister-in-law Mary Robinson.

“We went out to lunch,” said Dawn, who also givestalks and holds adult education classes in cake-decorating and sugarcraft in her shop.

“We sat and tried to work out the amounts of eachingredient we needed and how we were going to do it.With just four weeks to get it all done, life was prettyhectic.”

“The top of the cake was octagon-shaped and wecouldn’t find a company anywhere to make a tin thesize and shape needed. In desperation, I called mybrother who, at the time, was an engineer and he offeredto make it for us.

“Mary and I were used to baking from home, so itwas going to be a logistical nightmare.

“We have a relative who lived opposite a smallbakery in Norfolk, so we asked if we could borrow thebakery for three days and, thankfully, they agreed.”

Like most royal occasions, the details of the royalwedding cake was kept firmly under wraps and Dawnhad to contain her excitement until the big day.

Even now, a lot of local people don’t know that thisroyal wedding cake was created in a small workshop inLincolnshire – despite the 93 12-inch fruit cakes thatwere piled up in Sophisticake’s shop at one point.

“My son Darren and a royal chef spirited the finishedcake down to Windsor Castle in readiness for thewedding,” said Dawn.

“At one point, when we started decorating the cake, more privacy was needed, as people started to askquestions.

“So, we asked the local minister if we could use thechurch. We had to tell him what it was for, but if youcan’t trust a man of the cloth, then who can you trust?”

The stressful task of creating a royal wedding cakewas well worth it, as famous figures such as the Queen,Joanna Lumley and Rowan Atkinson were given thedelicious cake on the day.

“I received a wonderful thank you letter from the

Prince and the Duchess of Cornwall,” saidDawn.

“It was a real success and the followingyear, I was asked to make a sugar flowerspray for the Queen’s 80th birthday cake.

“I also made the Duchess’s 60th birthdaycake in 2007, which was an arrangement of 11gift boxes with sugar ribbons.

“In 2008, I had the honour of making the60th birthday cake for Prince Charles, too,

which was a replica of the walled garden inHighgrove.”

Since then, Dawn has made all sorts ofcakes for the royal family – an impressiveachievement for someone who took up thehobby by accident.

“It all started when I was in my twenties,”said Dawn, who is originally from Poole inDorset.

“My sister-in-law suggested we did some

HAVE YOUR CAKE ...JANE Seddon, cakemakerand decorator, of Hull-basedCake-licious, gives us herviews on what she imaginesto royal wedding cake will belike.

Apparently Kate andWilliam plan to have alow-key and modern weddingcake, but this does not meanit will be the same price asyour standard wedding cake.

They have a budget of£5,000 – possibly as much assome brides have to spend ontheir entire big day in thiscurrent financial climate.

I would expect the cake tobe a tall, structured and quitearchitectural four orfive-tiered fruit cake.

Recent royal weddingcakes have been ornatelydecorated with monograms, badges and figures.

I would expect Williamand Kate to have some ofthese traditional elements, butwould hope that somemodern features, possiblysuch as intricate stencilling, would appear – maybe evena touch of bling withdiamantes and feathers.

I understand that Kate isdetermined to put her stampon the wedding and therefore, whatever the cake’s design,I’m sure it will be chic andstylish.

If I was to be luckyenough to have the job ofmaking the royal weddingcake, I would do a round,five-tier, stacked cake with amixture of fruit/flavouredsponge tiers.

It would be cream withivory damask stencillingcombined with monogramsof the couple’s initials on

every other tier which wouldbe brushed with a lustre dustto give them a subtleshimmer.

The cake would be toppedwith an arrangement ofdelicate cream sugar flowerswhich would be accentedwith a few diamantes andivory feathers.

Not very traditional, butsomething very modern for ayoung couple.

sort of night school class, as we were botharty and wanted to try something new.

“I was a full-time mum and we werelooking for something to do that was creative.

“We wanted to try pottery or painting, butthe classes were full, so we thought we wouldgive the cake and sugarcraft sessions a go.

“After the first couple of hours, I washooked. To me, it was like falling in love.”

Dawn was taught by well-known cake-maker Mary Ford, who made a cake for thewedding of Prince Charles and Diana, thePrincess of Wales.

“It’s strange how things come full circle,”said Dawn.

“She made a cake for the Prince’s firstwedding and had it on show in her shop, shetaught me and I was commissioned to makehis second and a replica is now on show inmy shop.”

In the years that followed, Dawn had avariety of jobs including running a pub,

working for Marks & Spencer andhand-made cosmetics company, Lush.

But as her cake making started to take off,she realised she wanted to start her ownbusiness.

“My cake making started off with practiceand lessons and then went on to me makingcakes for friends and relatives in my sparetime,” said Dawn.

“It was like ripples on a pond and demandjust grew. People would see one of my cakesat a party and ask me to make one for them.

“Before I knew it, I was making cakes, running a house, raising my child and thingsgot hectic. I juggled everything, whichwomen do well anyway, but I soon felt that Icould make a living out of making cakes.

“Now it’s my career and I can’t think of abetter reason to get out of bed in themorning.”

PHOTOGRAPHY

A picture perfect wedding

Your wedding day will be thehappiest day of your livesand you want to make itpicture perfect. Weddingphotos may be passedthrough families and looked

at for years to come.As you looked your best on the day, you

want to choose a photographer who can makethat look eternal.

The wedding photographer plays a keyrole in assisting in the co-ordination of thewhole day’s events so you must choose yourwedding photographer carefully.

Their photographic skill and style areobviously paramount, but so are theirinterpersonal and organisational skills.

Before you book your photographer, askfriends who have recently wed for advice andtake a look at their wedding album.

Make a shortlist of photographers and askto see their work from the past year.

Make a list of what you want as a coupleand make sure the photographer you chooseis willing to work to your instructions, but beopen to their suggestions, too.

Take time to discuss all your arrangementswith the photographer during a consultationprior to booking to ensure you are on thesame wavelength.

You can then decide on any specialimages you wish to ensure are taken to

design your perfect wedding album.

A good photographer will want to assistyou as much as possible and help design theperfect wedding for each bride and groom.

Ensure you have the opportunity to look atsample albums and a selection of imagesfrom previous weddings.

One of the biggest costs can be the album,so ask to see samples before you sign themup.

Don’t be afraid to consider newphotographers. The rules are the same – askto see their work and don’t pay upfront, butdon’t write them off.

If you want more artistic pictures, thinkabout looking at photographic artists forideas. They may even be willing tophotograph your wedding, too.

Again meet up with them, take a look attheir previous work and make sure they canmeet your requirements.

A pre-wedding shoot prior to the eventwill give you and your photographer theopportunity to get to know each other anddevelop a relationship of trust.

On a more practical note, thephotographer may discover that, for example, the bride may be susceptible to blinking a lot.

It is important to know this beforehand.

Consider carefully the timing of yourwedding with regards to good light forphotographs, especially in the winter months.

A big no-no for your wedding is to ask afamily member to take your photos, unless

they are professional photographers.

It is a massive pressure and could ruintheir day with worry.

One thing you can ask of your guests is totake pictures during the wedding breakfast.

You don’t want to miss a thing, so putdisposable cameras on each table and askyour guests to snap away.

Simply ask your bridesmaid to collectthem up at the end of the meal.

Packs of cameras can be bought from allhigh street photo developers and, if you payextra for the packs, you may get theprocessing fee thrown in and save money inthe long run.

Another large consideration for capturingyour big day is on video.

A lot of photographers can now film yourwedding as part of a package, or you can optto organise this alongside your still images.

A wedding video will not only capture thesights of the day, but also the sounds. Youcan have the emotional build-up to theceremony on film, perhaps even theceremony itself (check with the church orvenue first) as well as the celebrations after.

Even the first dance, with music and all,can be caught on camera, put on a DVD andenjoyed for years to come.

So, before you book your photographer, consider all of your options and, of course, your budget.

Don’t forget to relax and enjoy the day.Oh, and smile.

PHOTOGRAPHER Hugo Burnand isrumoured to have been chosen to takePrince William and Kate Middleton’sofficial wedding pictures.

The coveted commission appears to havebeen given to the man who was the officialphotographer at the wedding of the Princeof Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall in2005.

During his career, Mr Burnand hasphotographed Michael Jackson, painterLucian Freud, former prime minister LadyThatcher and businessman John Magnier.

But it may have been his work with theRoyal Family that has earned him one ofthe most important jobs on any weddingday.

Charles asked Mr Burnand to take thebirthday image that marked his 60th year in2008.

In the picture, the heir to the throne worethe ceremonial uniform of the WelshGuards but was shown in a very relaxedseated pose with his arm across the back ofan ornate chair.

Mr Burnand has also taken pictures ofWilliam, Prince Harry and the Queen.

The royal wedding is being held atWestminster Abbey and it is likely thephotographer will capture the image ofWilliam, his new wife and senior guestsafter the ceremony at Buckingham Palace.

Take time to discuss all your arrangements with the photographer during a consultation prior tobooking to ensure you are on the same wavelength

CAMPER VANS

Vantastic!Y

ou only have to switch onthe TV to see some of theweird and wonderfulweddings people areplanning. From huge, fluorescent pink dresses on

Channel 4’s Big Fat Gypsy Wedding, toceremonies where everyone is starknaked on Sky Living’s Four Weddings,it is clear to see that more and morepeople are moving away from tradition. This is true for wedding transport, too, as

people are travelling in style in more quirkyoptions.

One person who realised this wasVolkswagen enthusiast John Every, ofCottingham, in East Yorkshire.

He launched Dub Tails, a VW camper vanchauffeuring service for weddings and otheroccasions, in June 2009.

Mr Every now has two vans, Sweet Peaand Ringo Starr, and is currently preparingfor this year’s wedding season to get into fullswing.

The idea for this bustling niche businesswas first sparked more than two years ago.

“I was with my brother-in-law and sister, who had come to visit, and we were talkingabout weddings and VWs,” said John, whotells me that Dub Tails is the only companyin the Hull area that offers the VW service.

“They said ‘we would love to get a VWfor our wedding’ and I said ‘that’s a brilliantidea’ and it was one of those moments whenI said ‘I am going to do it’.”

He found his first van, Sweet Pea, inSkipton in March 2009 after an eight-monthsearch.

He purchased the second van, Ringo Starr, from a Hull couple and is still in the processof renovating the vehicle.

He said: “It’s been a labour of love.

“Every time I go to a mechanic’s, I know itis going to cost.”

He believes Dub Tails has the potential togrow into a profitable business due to thewidespread popularity of the VW campervans.

Mr Every said: “It’s going well. I want topromote the fun of VWs in Hull.

“What I have found is even when you drivearound in it people jump out and take pictures.

“Everyone has got memories of this –either camping trips with their parents, orsurfing or whatever it is.

“They’re such iconic vehicles.”

His optimism is supported by Shai andAllyander Vure who got married in August2009.

On their wedding day, the pair travelled toAllyander’s childhood home in Leven inSweet Pea.

The vehicle was booked by Allyander’sfather as a surprise for the newlyweds.

Allyander said: “We really wanted aunique wedding and we agreed that a moretraditional wedding wouldn’t really suit us.

“We wanted something a bit more quirky,

so the VW was a surprise from my dad. I’vehad three Beetles and always wanted a VWvan.

“It absolutely made our day, it gave itsome personality.”

Mr Every receives orders as far asManchester, Nottingham and Harrogate.

HONEYMOONS

When travel writerEmma Gibbsmarried EastYorkshire actorMatthewWoodcock they

pooled their talents to create a fairytalewedding.

The wedding venue couldn’t have beenmore apposite or special – Shakespeare’sGlobe Theatre on London’s South Bank, withthe ceremony room located in the theatre’svisitor centre next door to the reconstructionof the original open-air Elizabethanplayhouse.

“With views across the Globe and outacross the Thames, looking towards St Paul’sand the Millennium Footbridge, it was amagical experience,” said Matthew, whoselatest performances have included theWireless Theatre Company’s radio play, TheSt Valentine’s Day Murder” at the NewDiorama Theatre and a role in two playspresented by the Theatre of the Damned, theUK’s only horror theatre company.

It was with the honeymoon that Emmabrought her expertise to bear. A travel writerand editor for Rough Guides, whose latestbooks have included The Rough Guide toEurope on a Budget and The Rough Guide toLaos, she organised a near four-week tour ofSouth Africa, which included time in Durban,at Kosi Bay near the Mozambique border, avisit to KwaZulu Natal’s major game park, the spectacular Drakensberg Mountains, anight in Bloemfontein followed by the starksemi-desert of the Karoo and then on toPlettenberg Bay, one of the Garden Route’sseaside towns, before finishing up inMontagu, an historic town on the edge of theWinelands, and then Cape Town itself.

“Choosing your honeymoon destinationneedn’t be a minefield, though it’s hard not tofeel the pressure to get it right,” Emma said.“Even working in travel doesn’t exempt youfrom this – I drove Matthew mad withdithering between countless destinations, which stretched from Brazil to Vietnam toAustralia and, finally, to South Africa.

“The truth is, wherever you go will beamazing, because you’ll have just gotten

married, and that alone, holiday or noholiday, is a fantastic feeling.”

But as with her own honeymoon, Emmawanted to let people know that it’s not just acase of buying a travel package “off theshelf”. With the world literally your oysterand some magical but less-well-knownlocations to choose from, she decided shewanted to share her knowledge.

And so her specialist honeymoon website,the honeymoonproject.com, was born . . .

“The Honeymoon Project is yourdedicated guide to all things honeymoon –whether you’re looking for a two-weekbeachside trip with nothing more strenuousthan ordering another glass of champagne, ideas for getting off the beaten track, or helpfinding that perfect romantic hideaway,” shesaid.

The site includes Emma’s guides todestinations around the world, advice andsuggestions on exclusive honeymoonsmonth-by-month, plus tips on when to book, what to pack and first-hand accounts of realhoneymoons, including her own.

“If I had to recommend one place that youreally should go in South Africa, it would beKosi Bay,” she said. “It’s relativelyuntouristy at the moment and worth the factthat it takes a little while to get up there. Thearea is famous for its four interconnectinglakes, which eventually empty out to theIndian Ocean at Kosi Mouth, and it’sabsolutely beautiful.

“We spent our three days there enjoyingthe various activities on offer, which includedzipping around the larger lakes on the lookout for hippos before a picnic on the beach

and a splash in the sea, and snorkelling atKosi Mouth – where even the shallow waterwas home to some amazing fish.”

But importantly, she says: “It’s up to youhow much you want to spend on yourhoneymoon – and you mustn’t spend loads onit just because you feel you should. Moneyisn’t directly proportional to how much funyou’ll have – you’ll be married, which willmake even the cheapest of honeymoons prettyspectacular and you’ll be much more likely toenjoy yourselves if you’re not worrying aboutmoney the whole time.”

For information on all things honeymoon, visit www.thehoneymoonproject.com. Ifyou’ve got a honeymoon-related question orwant to share your own honeymoon as part ofthe site’s “real honeymoons” section you canemail [email protected].

honeymoon

Honeymoon perksOne of the best things about being on honeymoon is that people will go out of their way tomake your trip special, says Emma on her website, www.thehoneymoonproject.com Thekey to getting honeymoon perks? Telling everyone that it’s your honeymoon – whetheryou’re booking through a travel agent or doing everything independently, dropping a little“it’s for our honeymoon” into the conversation/email/booking form usually does the trick,”she says.

“On our honeymoon, we received some kind of treat for being honeymooners fromeverywhere we stayed, apart from our two self-catering accommodations. The perksthemselves ranged from a room upgrade to rose petals and chocolates on the bed andchilled champagne on arrival.

“Our favourite was undoubtedly when we were staying at Kosi Forest Lodge near theMozambique border; returning to our “tent” after sundowners overlooking the lake, wefound the bath in our outdoor bathroom had been run for us – surrounded by candles, andwith a rather decadent bottle of liqueur waiting for us, alongside some lovely Swisschocolates.

“Travel agents usually have access to special offers with hotels and resorts, so there aredefinitely perks to booking through a company, but it’s worth knowing that you don’t haveto miss out on the honeymoon treats if you’ve booked it all yourself. Perhaps the hardestperk to get is a flight upgrade – if you’re travelling to a very popular honeymoondestination like the Maldives then chances are your status won’t really mark you outenough as worthy of an upgrade – but it’s always worth mentioning that you’re on yourhoneymoon, either when you book your flights or as you check in, just in case.”

Great escapesThree of Emma’s current favourite honeymoon properties as featured on

her website, the honeymoonproject.com . . .

The Sarojin, Khao Lak, Thailand: Anunabashedly romantic resort, says Emma. “I haveto admit that I’ve been utterly seduced by thephoto, and you really should head over to thewebsite (www.i-escape.com) to check out the rest. With a focus on personalised service, rooms withprivate gardens and/or pools, and a blissful spaon-site, it looks like it’d be worth every penny;from £270 a night.”

Paperbark Camp, Australia: Agorgeous eco-camp, withaccommodation in luxury tents, anacclaimed restaurant and a peacefulsetting among gum trees, PaperbarkCamp is ideally placed for exploringthis beautiful stretch of the New SouthWales coast; from £201 a night.

Hotel Dar Dhiafa, Tunisia: This looks a realtreat, tucked away in a small village on the lovelyTunisian island of Djerba. The traditionalbuildings have been beautifully renovated and stillretain their history and character, with the roomsprettily set around flower-filled courtyards. A realsteal; from £86 a night.

Hottest destinations for 2011We asked Emma to share a few of her favourite choices for honeymoons in 2011: “I’vepurposely tried to stay away from the more traditional destinations (the Maldives,Mauritius, Italy, Thailand, Bali….) and of course this list is by no means exhaustive,” shesays.

Brazil: Encompassing gorgeous beaches and islands, lush countryside and vibrant cities,it’s no surprise that Brazil is one of the hottest destinations right now – and conveniently,it’s the easiest country in South America to reach from the UK. Though there’s plenty tosee here, it’s also great combined with Argentina (think tango in Buenos Aires anddelicious wines in Mendoza) and don’t forget to head up to the undeniably impressiveIguazu Falls.

Vietnam: If you’ve already been to Thailand and are looking for something similar butdecidedly different, then Vietnam makes a great choice. Don’t underestimate its size –you’ll want a good couple of weeks (at least) to explore the whole length of the country, oryou could perhaps combine the history of Hanoi with the dramatic beauty of Halong Bayand atmospheric Hoi An, before heading to the laid-back beaches of Phu Quoc Island in thesouth.

Costa Rica: One of the biggest reasons for visiting this Central American beauty is itsamazing wildlife – the biological diversity of the country is truly outstanding and there arefew places where you can guarantee seeing as much as you can here. In addition, you’vegot an incredible range of landscapes, from volcanoes and cloud forests, to idyllic beachesand national parks. Parts of the country can feel a little like an American playground butwith a bit of research you’ll have no trouble finding somewhere perfect.

Cornwall: Europe is awash with beautiful beaches, and while you could go to the Coted’Azur, the Amalfi Coast or the Greek Islands, you’d be silly to ignore what’s right on ourdoorstep, even if the weather is utterly unpredictable. The eco-hotel The Scarlet goteverybody talking last year and quite rightly too – if its sea-view rooms, log-fired hot tubsand acclaimed restaurant don’t tempt you then I’m not sure what will – and proved thatstaying at home has really never been cooler.
