BERLIN, N.H. — Reliving the good ol’ days is good

business, from the classic car market to the price of

vintage trading cards to the popularity of throwback

jerseys. Nostalgia has a price, and many consumers

willingly pay it.Carl Patry knows this.

Patry restores BMX bikes and components from

the 1970s and ’80s from his home in Berlin. The typi-

cal late baby boomer/early Generation X customer

comes calling with a fantasy to take a spin down

memory lane with their childhood bike or the one

they never got.

His side business of acquiring vintage BMX bikes

and components has paid off . He said he was sell-

ing two to three bikes a month through his eBay

store, Live Free or Die, and his eBay account, old-

schoolmy85, for prices ranging from $1,500-$3,000.

His business has been on hold since July because of

shoulder surgery. Most of his bikes are built to order,

and he has customers from as far away as Singapore,

London, Australia, and Norway. He also off ers resto-

ration services for components and replicates decals

from the past to serve the passionate crowd of vin-

tage BMXers building their own bikes.

At least that’s how Joe Vadeboncoeur sees

it. Joe V., as his many industry friends call

him, is retired from a long career at Trek,

where among other things, he helped devel-
