    OCTOBER 2010

Joining toastmasters has been one of the best decisions I have made in my life off-late. It

has been a truly amazing learning experience and a hugely beneficial networking build-

ups with a very diverse and enriching group of people . Though my journey has just be-

gun and I see a huge potential to enhance my new found skills and reach an entirely dif-ferent level of communication.

In this issue, Club President Malkiat Bindra shares his vision for the club, DTM Ritu Arora shares her expertise

on various means and ways to become DTM . In the Hyde Park section we invited some thoughts on maintain-

ing a good attendance in the meetings. Read about a brand new toastmaster, Sameep Taneja, in the Know ThyToastmaster section.

The month of October saw the division contest for humorous speech and evaluation where the club was well rep-

resented.. We missed out on two meetings due to Gandhi Jayanti and Durga Pooja but something we can rejoice

is that we wont miss the meeting due to Diwali. I will take this opportunity to wish all my fellow members a

    very happy and safe diwali.

Its time to enjoy the festivities. Kudos!!!

3 PRESIDENT SPEAKS October To get something you never had, you have to do something you never did Anonymous.

To begin, I would like to inform you all that our club has achieved its 9th

DCP Goal. Re-cently TM Nitya Ranjan completed her Competent Communication. This makes JPKUTMC the first club in Area C2 to complete 9 goals.

I would like to thank Vanshul Arora, Aneesh Jain, Sangeeta Malik, Deepak Menon and

Nitya Ranjan for achieving the goals they set for themselves. I would also like to thankthose who helped us get the 8 new members. Ritu Arora, for always being there to help andto mentor our members. But the biggest thank you will go to the members who came andsupported everyone and helped members achieve their goals. Thank You.

October was also the month of Division C contest and what a brilliant contest it was. Twoof our club members were supposed to represent Area C2 in the Division contest. One inHumorous Speech Contest and the other one in the Evaluation Contest. Aneesh Jain gave a

good fight but couldnt get a podium finish. Deepak Diwani was the other member whowas supposed to participate in the Evaluation contest, but sadly he could not compete dueto some personal tragedy. I wish those who have won All the Best for the District contest

being held on 27th & 28th November in Mumbai.

In the end I wish you all a Happy Diwali

4 No, Its ImpossibleNo, it cant be done, thats just impossible, mancant fly, said people to the two Wright brothers, and the Wright brothers proved people wrong. Eachtime I board a flight, I remember the above state-ment.

30th November 2006, as I walked into the gates ofNDIIT, not in my wildest dreams had I imagined thata few months later I would be a Distinguished Toast-master. DTM - a dream, a vision, a reality. The enrolment was pretty easy, and I was a mem-ber. As I was given my manuals, I was told that theAnnual district Conference, Ovation 2007, was goingto be held in May, in Delhi. This would showcasesome of the best educational sessions and contests, and one member of our club would be competing. Now, being the hyperactive ball of energy that I am, my first question was, Can I com-pete? No, said the then President, think about it next year, or next to next year. No,

its impossible, the words ran in my head...15 days later I delivered my icebreaker, and who better to evaluate it that the then Divi-sion C Governor, Deepak Menon. After hearing the best evaluation of my life, I heard fromDeepak about Ovation 2007 again, and about the workshops, and the InternationalSpeech Contest. Contest, no, its impossible, you cant compete, Ritu, not this year any-way, the words played in my mind and I lifted my hand to ask a question, Deepak, can Icompete?Sure, if you can complete 6 speeches before the club contest, you just need to go to sev-eral clubs to deliver them, and if you can do that, sure you can compete, Deepak in hisimmense wisdom had spoken. My mentor had been chosen! The wind beneath yourwings- a mentor has to be someone who believes you can fly. Under his able guidance, this was followed a rollercoaster ride- going to various clubs, giving speeches, keeping inmind that the objective of each speech had to be met. In an attempt to complete 6speeches, I realized that I had taken slots in many more clubs, and hence ended up do-ing the first 10 speeches in a period of two months. As many of you will know, some clubsgive speaking slots only on alternate weeks, or once every 3 weeks, that too if you takeup other roles as well. So in short, to do those 10 speeches, I had attended about 60meetings (more than one would do in a year, if a person was to visit only one club), takenup every role in the book and become a Competent Communicator in a period of two

months. What had I gained? It wasnt just the title of a CC. What I had actually gained was leaing beyond compare. I had grown 3 dimensionally, not only as a speaker, and as a leabut also as a person. There had been a complete transformation in my training style, it was all thanks to Toastmasters. I realized that I had found a place where I could aff

to fail, and still not be judged for it. Toastmasters were people who wanted to help megrow, irrespective of the state I came from, the watch I wore, or the shortcomings I haNaturally, I wanted to grow more, so I continued to visit several clubs a week, sometimeven several clubs on the same day. I would, at times end up driving around NCR forhours to get 6 hours of 3 Toastmasters meetings on the same day. For those of you, ware still on the Competent Communication manual, let me tell you a little secret, The begins after the 10thspeech. Taking a leadership role at the Club was the next step, asince then, there has been no looking back. 9 months later, I was a Distinguished Toamaster.

3 lessons that I learnt in this journey:

    1. Capability, perseverance, and passion, will help you realize your dreams.

    2. You need a good mentor, who not only believes in you, is a good sounding board, balso is someone who has the knowledge and capability to help you grow.

    3. Believe in your dreams and dont let anybody else tell you otherwise.

I do agree that after becoming a District, things have changed a little. You need to seras an Area Governor, Division Governor or one of the top 7 District officers for a yearcomplete your Advanced Leader Silver, a requirement for your DTM, but then, its a leing experience, and that is why we are at Toastmasters.I dont know if the Wright brothers had heard the famous lines,Leheron se dar kar nadiya paar nahi hoti Koshish karne waalon ki, kabhie haar nahinhotiWhat I do know is that DTM is achievable, and its fairly easy to become a DTM. The

time someone tells you thats impossible, remember- Impossible is nothing, noth

    is impossible .

    MEETING THEME OF THE MONTH5

    Deepak Menon

I had to scan my brains and run them reversing the direc-tion of events and happenings in my life to precisely cal-culate the first time I heard the words action and reaction. After labouring hard enough, I mined gold. It was in classIX when Newtons laws were taught and I had found the

theme for the meeting on October 9th

, 2010. The themerevolved around Newton's third law of motion which de-crees that for every action, there is an equal and oppo-site reaction. Cause and effect also works on the sameprinciple and that was the chosen theme indeed.

For all that we see around us or experience ourselves, there is a cause. It is impor-

tant to be able to dig down and discover the real cause than what may be the ap-

parent cause. This is an excellent tool to help resolve disputes and arrive at solu-

tions to complex problems by uncovering the real cause. The Toastmasters experi-

ence also causes members to shed their nervousness and become confident and

articulate communicators. This is the most desired effect as this is what most mem-

    bers join to achieve.

So I do hope that all fellow members put in their best efforts and achieve their

    goals in Toastmasters.

Since childhood, I was unable to understand the con-cept of Coffee Houses, the incomprehensibility of sit-ting in Coffee houses for hours. People just sit thereand drink a lot of coffee. Have long discussions from

various topics ranging from Chalk to Cheese.

Maybe it was because I had never been to one ormaybe it was because I did not speak that much. Butwhatever it was, I did not like them. But since I leftschool and joined CA, I have been to a lot of coffeehouses. A Lot! And now I totally understand the con-cept of coffee houses. Not only have I understood; Ilike the concept a lot as well.

Not long back before the meeting, I was sitting with myVP Education, Aneesh Jain, for some important work, just came up that we did not have a Toastmaster formeeting on 23rd October. Since I had missed a lot of

meetings, I owed this much to the Toastmaster in me. Iagreed to take up the role of the Toastmaster without asecond thought.

The big decision after that was about the theme. With Costa Coffee opening i

market recently and teasers for Koffee with Karan being aired on my favorite

drew these as good omens and I decided to take up coffee as theme of the m

October 23, 2010. This was also an exciting task for me as I was unaware of

science terms used by coffee houses. I got my research side in action and now

equipped when I enter a coffee house.

MEETING THEME OF THE MONTH contd..6Bad habits die hard. I love excitement and if life seemsto be coming easy, I tend to make it more adventurous. Not that I take up new challenges and look for pathsless travelled, I actually create excitement by picking-uptasks at the 11th hour. And this what I exactly did, havingtaken-up the role of the TM yesterday, It was only a fewminutes before leaving for the meeting I started to thinkabout the theme of the meeting. Since the closest holi-day happens to be the Halloween, I decided to talkabout ghosts and ways to deal with them.

Ghosts like all Gods and Goddesses, are omnipotentand omni present. You call them imagination of mind orunreal characters, but they keep cropping-up to haunt us in different forms andshapes. Exams, tough assignments, management reviews are some inevitableghosts that you have to willy-nilly encounter every now and then. Some ideas to tacklethese ghosts

i). Face them, challenge them and youll end up as a winner

ii). Cant defeat them... be friends with themiii). If nothing works out, beat the hell out of them (source:Scary Movie series)!!

All the role players exhibited absolute serenity. The prepared speech segment show-cased interesting topics such as Social Networking (Sanchit), Blue Collar Jobs (Samir)and finding the Way Outfrom the enticing advertisement campaigns (Akhil). Commonsense is no longer common our first time Table Topics Master Sameep challengedthe speakers to break the status quo and take a stand against the age old wisdom.Nitya, who came with her father, used the platform to ask for a raise in her pocketmoney perhaps the best utilization of the TT Forum!! The session was a real fun fol-lowed by a flawless evaluation segment by GE - Malkiat and his team. Akhil and San-

    Two roads diverged in a yellowwood,And sorry I could not travel bothAnd be one traveller, long I stoodAnd looked down one as far as IcouldTo where it bent in the undergrowth;Then took the other, as just as fair,And having perhaps the better claim,Because it was grassy and wantedwear;

Though as for that the passing thereHad worn them really about thesame,And both that morning equally layIn leaves no step had trodden black.Oh, I kept the first for another day!Yet knowing how way leads on toway,I doubted if I should ever comeback.I shall be telling this with a sighSomewhere ages and ages hence:Two roads diverged in a wood, and I -

OctobeKNOW THY TOASTMASTER7Sameep Taneja is an Internet marketer and Web Analytics professional. He is currently working in Accenture in the Mar-

keting and Communication team supporting various projects and campaigns for the promotion of its services to the cur-rent and prospective clients worldwide. He is a mechanical engineer who thought about migrating to another planet, but

was rescued by the internet and then there has been no looking back in his world of possibilities and unlimited choices.

Lets get close and personal with him...

Q1: How did you come to know about the train to toastmasters and how is the

journey so far?I have come across Toastmasters club mentioned in various books and blogs. In par-

ticular I remember reading about it on StevePavlina.com, one of the top blogs and alsoa personal favourite in the personal development category and one that I recommendhighly to anyone interested in cultivating their interests and turning it into a full timeoccupation.

I have been looking to improve my speaking skills for professional growth and also to

improve communication and had searched for Toastmasters Delhi on internet earlierwhile looking to join the club..Then one day I met Sangeeta Malik and somehow the

discussion about Toastmasters club came up during our discussion and then she en-couraged me to join this club. Since I was already looking for TM, so this was a timely

recommendation and I am thankful to her for introducing me to this club.

It has been a satisfying journey so far after attending 4 meetings and I am pleased with

the enthusiastic and professional attitude of everyone I have met in this club.

Q2: You have been a part of corporate world for some time, please share some of

the other priorities you have in life ?

I have been working in the field of Online marketing- think banner ads, google..... I amhappy to be part of this field and my professional priorities are to take up challenging

work assignments that stretch me and also provide appreciation and the opportunitiesto grow really fast :) . My personal priorities in my life are my wife, Sonia and 2 Kids,

Aditya and Tanvi and my parents.

Q3: It seems you have an ongoing penchant for online marketing and the internet

bubble, In what way can toastmaster help you achieve your goals here?

The field of Internet Marketing, although very engaging but is also 'virtual' in naturesince one is plugged in to the internet and cut off from the 'real people' and here iswhere TM Club helps me by providing an opportunity to interact with an group of like

minded people who want to grow and live the best life.

Q4: How do you think that the world has changedfrom the time you were in college to the t ime you are

    in Accenture ?

The world has changed in the most interesting ways. Re-minds me of a cartoon that shows a Board 'No Coffee' at

the entrance to a Cybercafe. Can you imagine a cafe with-out coffee in the past?. The changes in the technology, lifestyle and also the business are so drastic that a personwaking up using a time machine from 15 years back

    would call it 'magical'.

Q5: What things will you like to change in toastmasters meeting structure and any other

you have for the fellow members?

The formal structure of the TM meetings is a nice framework. Its nice to see people in formalsing the basic norms of punctuality. The table topics are nice and I would love to see even morecated for it.

OctobeTHE HYDE PARK Improving attendance8The Hyde Parkin London is famous for its Speakers Corner, which allows anyone and everyone to speak on a topic for as long as they can unless the police finds it o

and the Hyde Park police has had a history of being offended very rarely even on sensitive issues. As a salutation to the freedom of expression, we bring Hyde Park

don to our newsletter, and invite everyone to publish their comments on a certain topic, which for this month is: "Improving the attendance in the meetings"

1.) Award for Best Attendance:(Certificate/Trophy/Book or something else)

Member with the maximum attendance/quarter (these dates will be pre - an-nounced to all members) should be given award at the end of each quarter (3

months). This will give motivation to members to get the recognition to attendthe meetings.

Every member could be asked to contribute some money (say Rs. 10/month)

    towards it.

2.) Birthdays of the month Celebrations:

We should fix some time in one meeting (at the end of every month) to cele-

brate birthdays of members of that month. This will help socializing among

members besides regular meeting and will motivate them more meetings (atleast that special meeting)

    3.) Pre - decided Themes:

Rather than deciding over theme of the meetings week on week if we can pre -

plan (atleast one month in advance) the meeting themes with toastmaster/General Evaluators/Table topic masters of those meetings. It will help mem-

bers plan/prepare their speeches according to the meeting themes. Members

will be looking forward to attending/taking part in these pre-decided meetings.

Members could be asked for the meeting themes regarding this.

    Vikas Malik

We should maintain an extra worksheet in the google document where

bers will have to give a reason as to why are they missing a particular m

This can ensure people to avoid missing a series of meetings.

I also feel we start a practice of a 10 minute fellowship break at a con

time in the meeting where the members can socialize. If we have this a

tabletopics section., it can even help the evaluators in offering a concret

    to the speaker.

    Sangeeta Malik

We shall give the members more re-

sponsibility and force the indispensableroles to them. If I am the toastmaster

for the meeting, I will have to be thereat the meeting. So having a role in themeeting will ensure my participation.
