As we begin the month that many refer to as “March Madness” I am reminded of what it means to be Italian. We travel from Lodge to Lodge to bear witness and to congratulate the new and continuing Presidents for a job well done and to honor their commitment to their lodges and to their culture and heritage. This, my last message to you as your President, is bittersweet. It has been my honor and privilege to serve as your Lodge President for the past two years. I have made so many friends by serving as your President, both in our own lodge and in filial lodges in surrounding communities. This experience has been educational, inspiring and humbling. I have learned so much about the Order, our culture and our heritage, and have been able to participate and contribute in ways I never imagined. Although my reign as your President has come to an end, I look forward to continuing to work with you all as we support our new President, Brother Pasquale Greco. I am confident in Brother Pat’s commitment to our Lodge and the Order Sons of Italy in America and know that he will do a good job as our President. Being a lodge Officer is often a thankless position requiring an individual’s time and efforts in the most inconvenient of times. I would like to thank all of our outgoing officers for their support and dedication to our lodge and would like to congratulate all of our incoming officers and wish them luck as they take on their new positions. I hope that you all can join us for our installation. Let’s show our support to the New President Pasqual Greco and his slate of officers as they take their oath. Garibaldi-Meucci Museum The Garibaldi-Meucci Museum, owned and operated by
the Order Sons of Italy in America, is a historic house
preserved as a memorial to the lives of Antonio Meucci
and Giuseppe Garibaldi. Antonio Meucci, a native of
Florence, Italy, lived here until his death in 1889. In 1849,
while experimenting with the new phenomenon of
electricity, he discovered that sound could be transmitted
by electric wires.
Alexander Graham Bell was then two years old. Meucci
also extended refuge and sanctuary to the famous
Giuseppe Garibaldi, who had been forced to flee his
homeland while fighting for the unification of Italy.
Garibaldi lived in Meucci's home in the period between
1850-1854. Garibaldi arrived in New York City, in poor
health and grieving the loss of his young wife, Anita, who
had died in the terrible retreat from Rome. Meucci offered
him the hospitality of his home, where Garibaldi worked
with Meucci in his candle factory and enjoyed hunting,
fishing and sailing with his friend until he was able to
resume his trade as a sea captain. In 1854 he returned to
Italy to lead his volunteer legions to the victories that
unified Italy and won him worldwide fame.

the beautifully landscaped lawn in front of the historic
Garibaldi-Meucci Museum. The walkway will be paved
with the commemorative bricks that you donate. You can
personalize your brick to contain your name, special dates,
or a brief message. Your brick can honor a family member,
a friend, or yourself. It will serve as a permanent memory
of someone, or something, special to you. Please sponsor
a piece of the Garibaldi-Meucci Museum Recognition
Walkway and leave a legacy that future visitors will come
to see, while at the same time showing your support of
Italian-American culture. It's a gift, and a memorial that
will last many lifetimes..

FROM OUR PRESIDENT ELECT PASQUALE GRECO: Hello to all my Brothers & Sisters in the Judge Frank A. Gulotta Lodge. I hope you all are keeping warm in this brutal weather. This is the fourth coldest February in history. We had our Decadent Desserts in honor of Valentine’s Day which was a tasty success. We also had Mr. Louis Gallo; Chairman of the State C.S.J. gave us a presentation called History in a Box. It was very entertaining. The incoming council and I will be working on a great many new ideas, along with continuing with old favorites. Our installation will be on March 11, 2015 at the Frank A. Gulotta Building at Greis Park. How proud I am to start my Presidency in a Building named for our Lodge’s namesake. I am honored and looking forward in representing this great lodge. This month is March madness both in the NCAA where they have only one winner and in O.S.I.A. where the lodges are all winners with their installations of new officers. One of our primary fund raisers is this month, the bus trip to the Sands casino on March 21st. This is a great deal and a day of fun. Even if you do not gamble they have an outlet mall attached to the casino. We need your support. The only way the lodge can be successful is with your help. I am proud to represent the Judge Frank A. Gulotta Lodge #2180 as the best lodge in the Order. We may be small but we are mighty. Please think about bringing a friend to one of our meetings. They may enjoy themselves and join. GRAND LODGE SCHOLARSHIP
PROGRAM “Deadline coming close”
Please find the 2015 Scholarship and Grant applications forms on the last (2) pages of this newsletter. A total of 109 district scholarships and 13 statewide undergraduate and graduate awards will be distributed to 61 students on Saturday, June 13th at a special scholarship program. The program will be held at Tappan Zee High School in Orangeburg, NY. Students graduating high school or college with a minimum of 85% are eligible. The application requests evidence of scholarship and service. The same application may be used for graduate or undergraduate scholarship. The applicant must be a New York State resident and of Italian heritage. Application is not limited to OSIA membership. Six Grants (6) will be awarded to 3 students at the same awards program this year. Students must have an Individualized education plan (I.E.P.) to be eligible for a Grant. All steps in #2 must be completed and sent directly to the District Chairperson. If you have a question as to the eligibility, please call Angela DeCosimo at 516-837-8550. The directions for applications are clearly noted on the application form. Applications are also available to students from the Grand Lodge Office, the N.Y.S OSIA web page www.nysosia.org. PLEASE NOTE THE DEADLINE FOR SUBMITTING THE APPLICATION AND CREDENTIALS IS MARCH 31, 2015.
