Why Hillbillies Make Good MarinesDear Ma & Pa, Am well. Hope you are. Tell brother Walt & brother Elmer the Marine Corps beats working for old man Minch by a mile. Tell them to join up quick before maybe all of the places are filled. I was restless at first because you got to stay in bed till nearly 6 a.m., but am getting so I like to sleep late. Tell Walt & Elmer all you do before breakfast is smooth your cot and shine some things. No hogs to slop, feed to pitch, mash to mix, wood to split, fire to lay. Practically nothing. Men got to shave but it is not so bad, they git warm water. Breakfast is strong on trimmings. Like fruit juice, cereal, eggs, bacon, etc..., but kind of weak on chops, potatoes, ham, steak, fried eggplant, pie, and other regular food. But tell Walt & Elmer you can always sit between two city boys that live on coffee. Their food plus yours holds you till noon, when you get fed again. Its no wonder these city boys cant walk much. We go on route marches, which the Platoon Sergeant says are long walks to harden us. If he thinks so, it is not my place to tell him different. A route march is about as far as to our mailbox at home. Then the city guys gets sore feet and we all ride back in trucks. The country is nice, but awful flat. The Sergeant is like a schoolteacher. He nags some. The Capt. is like the school board. Majors & Colonels just ride around & frown. They dont bother you none. This next will kill Walt & Elmer with laughing. I keep getting medals for shooting. I dont know why. The bulls-eye is near as big as a chipmunk and dont move. And it aint shooting at you, like the Higgett boys at home. All you got to do is lie there all comfortable and hit it. You dont even load your own cartridges. They come in boxes. Be sure to tell Walt & Elmer to hurry & join before other fellers get into this setup & come stampeding in.

    Your loving daughter, Gail

Wheat markets pushed higher, led by the Chicago soft red winter wheat market due mostly to harvest delays. Persistent rains on mature wheat across much of the Midwest growing region are causing concerns of lost yields and definitely declining quality. Harvest has progressed quickly across the central plains hard red winter wheat region, preventing the Kansas City market from keeping up with the Chicago market. Minneapolis spring wheat futures were also not as strong as Chicago as good rains fell across much of North Dakota. The market is also acknowledging, however, the deteriorating conditions across the western Canadian prairies, where freezes, and then hot and dry weather, are already taking a toll on the spring crops. Corn and soybeans were also higher, with beans leading the way. The same rains that are stalling the soft red winter wheat harvest are also preventing the last of the soybean acres to get planted, forcing the trade to re-assess the final planted acres and also to lower yield estimates as those late planted acres will likely yield less as well. Corn found support from the rains as widespread flooding in key growing areas has the market concerned about lost acres, replanting requirements and potential yields losses. A record ethanol production week last week and then a drop in stocks also lent strength to the corn market as demand for the alternative energy looks to be improving. The cattle complex was quiet with both live cattle and feeders little changed. Cash fed markets were about $1/cwt lower despite beef values improving over the last couple of weeks. Feeders continue to find support from very active auctions around the country, particularly for grass calves, as the much improved pasture conditions in the southern and central plains have ranchers optimistic and looking for grazing stock. Energy markets were slightly lower as they continue to pace in a general sideways pattern. The weekly crude oil stocks estimate came in lower than expected but the market couldnt find much buying in response. The strong dollar lent just a bit of bearishness to the overall trade. The dollar rose on the weaker euro as Greece once again looks headed for a default, prompting traders to pitch the euro and look to the dollar as a source of security. Louise Gartner

DAVE SAYS: Who Is Dave Ramsey? Dave Ramsey is a personal money management expert, popular national radio personality and the author of three New York Times bestsellers The Total Money Makeover, Financial Peace Revisited and More Than Enough. In them, Ramsey exemplifies his lifes work of teaching others how to be financially responsible, so they can acquire enough wealth to take care of loved ones, live prosperously into old age, and give generously to others.

    * Dave Ramsey is Americas trusted voice on money and business. He has authored five New York Times best-selling books: Financial Peace, More Than Enough, The Total Money Makeover, EntreLeadership and Smart Money Smart Kids. His newest best-seller, Smart Money Smart Kids, was written with his daughter Rachel Cruze, and recently debuted at #1. The Dave Ramsey Show is heard by more than 8 million listeners each week on more than 500 radio stations. Follow Dave on Twitter at @DaveRamsey and on the web at daveramsey.com.

DEAR DAVE, Ive been in my current job for five years. Ive also had a second job for three of those years, but now Id like to make a change. Do you have any advice on how to convince a potential employer that Im a good hire, even though I had a couple of jobs in the past that I quit after a month or two? ~BillDear Bill, Quitting a job after a month or so isnt normally some kind of sin that automatically disqualifies you from being hired. It might be with some corporate goober whos looking at things through some silly, one-size-fits-all hiring paradigm, but that alone wouldnt be the kiss of death around my office. Now, would we look at something like that and want to know what happened and what your explanation was? Absolutely! But if it made sense, there wouldnt be a problem. However, if it made you sound flighty or disgruntled with things in general, wed probably pass. My guess is that the fields youre interested in are like most theres a lot of importance put on who you know. And I dont mean this in a negative way. Work and try to develop good relationships with people in your field and those associated with it. If thats in place, they can honestly give out positive references. Knowing someone within the field or at the company, or being connected to someone with a positive reputation, can help you avoid the rsum slush pile. It can help cut through the mess and achieve clarity! ~Dave

DEAR DAVE, My wife cosigned a loan on a 2007 car for her sister. Now, its being repossessed, and $23,000 is still owed on it at 20 percent. What can we do in this situation? ~PabloDear Pablo, Tell the bank or dealer where the car is, and tell them to come pick it up. Theres no way to get out of the rest, my friend. You and your wife are going to be liable for whatever the car doesnt bring in afterward. Lets say it sells for $4,000. That would be subtracted from what is owed, and it will still be up to you guys to pay the rest. You could always try to negotiate to settle it for pennies on the dollar. Based on what youve told me, thats a best-case scenario. The other thing I would do is demand a full audit on the account from day-one to present, because a 20 percent interest rate doesnt explain why a car didnt pay off especially a $23,000 car. If this was a $5,000 car from a tote-the-note car lot, and they were ripping her off charging only interest and thats all anyone was paying, and she gave up and punted thats fine. Youre just looking for a little understanding of the situation. But $23,000 cars dont generally have 20 percent interest. Thats a pretty freaky deal, and Id want to know where the money went. From a banks perspective, I dont see how anyone would think something like this would work out. The car was going down in value the entire time, so it just doesnt make sense to me. Of course, if you have the cash lying around and it wouldnt damage your finances, you could just take care of things and call it Stupid Tax. Cosigning on a loan, especially with family, is never a good idea. ~Dave
