CUMBERLAND — The ball started rolling last May when Phil Maund, principal at Cumberland Junior Secondary, asked band teacher Joanne Hawthorn to arrange something for this year’s Empire Days parade in the small Comox Valley community.

Since that time, the Cumberland Marching Band has become a sizable outfi t that is leaving an indelible mark at each of its performances.

“It’s been so fantastic,” said Hawthorn, whose

group includes musicians from Cumberland, Royston, Vanier Secondary School in Courtenay and Highland Secondary in Comox. “It’s a ton of work but it’s a ton of fun.”

According to Hawthorn, it is the only marching band on Vancouver Island.

She said the group was the “talk of the Valley” following its debut at the Empire Days parade, winning the $1,000 fi rst overall prize.

The band also took part in the Canada Day parade in Courtenay, then performed at the Campbell River

festivities the same day.

At Vancouver Island MusicFest July 8 to 10, the group participated in a workshop with the MarchFourth Marching Band of Portland, Ore.

As of September, when it formed, the group had raised nearly $30,000. It has received upwards of $21,000 in donations from service clubs and businesses in the Comox Valley.

Terry Grant, star of the Mantracker television show, helped raise more than $7,000 at a recent dinner event at the Cumberland Recreation Institute.

The money will be used to purchase new equipment and uniforms.

“That was a huge effort from parents,”

Hawthorn said.Remaining money

will help fund a week-long trip to the 2012 Calgary Stampede.

“There’s 350,000 people that watch

that parade, plus it’s televised. We’re really hoping that it brings attention here.”

After the fi ve-kilometre parade in Calgary, group

members will have an opportunity to watch dozens of top-notch bands at the world marching showband

The last article about Sterling Silver brought in a deluge of questions from readers.

Apparently cupboards were emptied, attics searched and basements upturned as treasure hunters eagerly sought out potentially priceless items.

Just as with the Antiques Roadshow no doubt there were a few who were disappointed to fi nd that their pieces were actually some kind of base-metal doing a fi ne job of imitating Sterling. So, to hopefully help you out as you polish off the years of tarnish on your metalware, here are a few pointers to help sort out the real thing from the ‘wannabes.’

While actual Sterling Silver is used in the plating process it is virtually impossible for a refi nery to recover it from pieces that have been plated. In fact it can take as little as 40 grams of silver to plate a set of twelve knives, forks and spoons.

Picture for a moment, a human hair

lying fl at on a knife blade - not a pretty sight but bear with me.

Now consider this; an average human hair is 45 microns thick and the thickness of silver on plated items can range from as little as three to 30 microns. When an object has such a thin covering of silver one can see why there is such a price differential between ‘plated’ and Sterling objects. Even a ‘heavily-plated’ piece has but a miniscule of silver coating it.

Without getting too technical, or going into the science involved in the plating process, the following are just some of the markings which indicate that a method of putting a few microns of actual silver on to an object made from a base (inferior) metal has been used. Knowledge of these markings should help you distinguish what is not true – Sterling – silver.

Perhaps the most

common mark seen is that of E.P.N.S. which indicates that an item has been electro-

plated with nickel silver. Despite its name, nickel silver contains no silver at all; rather, it is an alloy of nickel, zinc and copper. Other marks indicate a

plating process where a layer of pure silver is deposited electrolytically on on to a base metal such as copper to give an overall silver fi nish. The range of markings used by various makers is vast and the following is but a small example of just a few of the other commonly found markings indicating ‘plated wares’ E.P.B.M. (electro-plated britania metal), E.P. (electro-plate), C.P.N.S. (copper-plated nickel silver), E.P.W.M. (electro-plated white metal), Sheffi eld Plate, Quadruple Plate, Nevada Silver, German Silver, E.P.C. (electro-plated copper) and so on.

Many countries have their own ‘hallmarking’ system

in place to guarantee the quality of their silverware and there are plenty of online resources available for anyone who wants to learn more about their items. Most of the websites do not, or will not, give indications of value for your items as they are there for research and are not appraisers. Two of my favourite websites which have marks from all around the world are: the “Online Encyclopedia of Silver Marks, Hallmarks and Makers Marks” at http://www.925-1000.com/ and the people at “Silver Makers Marks” at http://www.silvermakersmarks.co.uk/ Both sites have a vast amount of information not only for Sterling and its equivalent but also markings which help to identify and date your plated wares.

Over the last few years the market for plated wares has been really low. Even quality pieces have been regarded as being almost worthless and much has been thrown away. However, people have recently begun to realize that silver plated pieces can represent

fantastic value for money. When one considers the price of a new stainless steel knife, fork and spoon compared to a quality antique or vintage plated place setting, one can easily see why ‘plate’ is making a comeback.

I encourage anyone interested in learning more about silver and plated wares to visit the above mentioned sites. Collecting can be lots of fun especially if you know what you are doing and with today’s technology there is a wealth of information readily available to all.

championships. The Cumberland Marching Band consists

of 27 members ranging from 12 to 19 years. Hawthorn would like to see it grow to at least 40 people.

Members need a musical background. For instance, they need to know how to play an instrument profi ciently.

“We’ll take anybody,” she said. “(But) They need to be more than a fi rst-year player.”

The program will essentially start from scratch in September, since the band might have doubled in size by that time.

Campbell Riverite Kirsty Graham has recently completed an undergraduate research project studying tropical conservation in Costa Rica and has written a series of articles on her experience.

Kirsty GrahamSpecial to MidWeek

Part IWhen we picture

“the tropics”, we picture lush jungles teeming with wildlife, where we can’t hear ourselves think over the sound of bird song.

We don’t imagine banana and coffee plantations, ramshackle urban sprawl or clear-cuts. My education thus far has drawn me to wherever the twain shall meet.

Conservation biology explores the limits of ecology when faced with human infringement, and tries to fi nd a balance between nature and development. I am fortunate enough to study at Quest University Canada – an institution that encourages wild experiential learning

projects. For my

undergraduate thesis, I travelled to Costa Rica for two months. I focused on primate research, but was immersed in a diverse range of conservation projects.

It soon became clear that the challenges facing tropical conservation are similar to those here in Canada, including land disputes, ecology versus economy and inadequate environmental education.

Costa Rica provides an interesting case because their economy relies heavily on ecotourism. With so much invested in biodiversity,

the pressure is on to develop quick, cheap and effective management plans.

As in British Columbia’s own rainforests, it remains to be seen how much we are willing to compromise. To avoid the inevitable sense of overwhelm, there are small changes that individuals can make to chip away at the problem.

So next time you visit a tropical country, consider your impact. Although we are encouraged to leave no trace, change will happen when we can take away an appreciation of the awe and splendour of these natural tropical places.

They’ve helped shape our nation, dictating how First Nations and immigrants travelled and settled.

They’re a vital source of the country’s electrical power and water supply.

And they’re home to some of our favourite recreational pursuits. Canada’s rivers, big and small, are an integral part of our lives.

Join the Canadian Wildlife Federation as we celebrate Canadian Rivers Day (June 12) and Rivers to Oceans Week (June 8 to 14) by exploring your Canadian waterway wisdom. Rivers to Oceans Week raises awareness about the importance of Canada’s waters

and reminds us that safeguarding the quality of all water fl owing across our land is crucial to the health of our oceans.

You can fi nd out about activities taking place across the country and how you can get involved supporting CWF’s water

conservation efforts by visiting riverstooceans.ca.

Think you know the country’s waterways inside out?

Here’s your chance to prove just how well. Try navigating these 25 questions. Are you a river rat or landlubber? Take our

ultimate quiz and fi nd out.

1. Nearly half of the total fl ow of the country’s rivers drains north into the Arctic

Ocean, Hudson Bay or

James Bay. True or false?

2. What river in Atlantic Canada famously reverses its fl ow?

3. Plans for a hydroelectric development on a Quebec river in the early 1970s were eventually suspended indefi nitely because of opposition from First Nations and environmentalists. Name the river.

4. Name the river that inspired these lyrics from a famous Canadian song.

Where the wind comes to say

To the river each day
