~In the School of Mary~ PAPAL DOCUMENTS
Condensed by Deacon Bill Wagner (Document of Vat II: Constitution on the Sacred
Liturgy: Promulgated by Pope Paul VI, December 4, 1963)
SACROSANCTUM CONCILIUM
Chapter I GENERAL PRINCIPLES FOR THE RESTORATION
AND PROMOTION OF THE SACRED LITURGY 3. The Reform of the Sacred Liturgy (C) Norms Based upon the Didactic and Pastoral Nature of the Liturgy In the revision of the liturgy, the following general norms should be observed: The rites should be distinguished by a noble simplicity; short, clear and unencumbered by useless repetition and, within the people’s comprehension, requiring little explanation. That the intimate connection between words and rites may be apparent: 1) There is to be more reading from holy Scripture. 2) The sermon is part of the liturgical service. The ministry of preaching is to be fulfilled with exactitude and fidelity. Its content should be drawn mainly from scriptural and liturgical sources. 3) Instruction, more explicitly liturgical, should also be given in a variety of ways. 4) Bible services should be encouraged, particularly to be commended in places where no priest is available. Particular law remaining in force, the use of the Latin language is to be preserved in the Latin rites. But since the use of the mother tongue may be of great advantage to the people, the limits of its employment may be extended. These norms being observed, it is for the competent authority to decide whether and to what extent the vernacular language is to be used. They are to be confirmed by the Apostolic See. Translations from the Latin text must be approved by the competent territorial ecclesiastical authority. D) Norms for Adapting the Liturgy to the Culture and Traditions of Peoples Even in the liturgy, the Church has no wish to impose a rigid uniformity but respects the genius of the various races and peoples. Anything in their way of life, not indissolubly bound up with superstition and error, the Church studies and, if possible, preserves intact. Provisions shall also be made when revising the liturgical books for adaptations to different groups and peoples, especially in mission lands, provided that the substantial unity of the Roman rite is preserved. Within the limits set by the typical editions of the liturgical books, it shall be for the competent territorial ecclesiastical authority to specify adaptations, especially in the case of the sacraments, the sacramentals, processions, liturgical language, sacred music and the arts, but according to the fundamental norms laid down in this Constitution.

JULY 12, 2020 15 S W ? J S . C T !
As we return to celebrating the sacraments, we need more volunteers to help with sign-ins, ushering, and sanitizing for special liturgies – weddings, funerals, baptisms, etc. – as well as regularly-scheduled Masses. Liturgies take place at varying times on weekends and weekdays, and in a parish this size, there are events to meet anyone’s schedule.
Whether you’re available once a month or five times a week, we want your help!
Volunteers can choose which specific events they will help with by signing up through Flocknote, and training will be provided. To join the team, go here https://st-bart.org/liturgical-ministries.We look forward to working with you!
