Notes to the comparison of banks The comparison covers the following countries:

Albania Macedonia Bosnia and Herzegovina Poland Bulgaria Romania Croatia Russia Czech Republic Serbia and Montenegro Estonia Slovakia Hungary Slovenia Latvia Ukraine Lithuania

“CEE total“ refers to the above mentioned 17 countries. “CEE*“ refers to the above mentioned countries excluding Russia and Ukraine.

The data used are based on the total assets as of 31 December 2004, reflecting ownership interests as at 30 June 2005.

The total assets of the entire banking market in the first section of the comparison differ from those in the subsequent sections: The first section uses total assets according to central bank statistics (translated at the average annual exchange rate). The other sections of the comparison use the total assets obtained by adding together the total assets as shown in the banks‘ local financial statements (translated at the year-end exchange rate).

This comparison is based on a variety of different data which are not always complete and which do not always correspond to international accounting standards. Moreover, results will be/were published in individual countries only after this report was prepared. For this reason the data include estimates in some cases. Especially the size of competitor banks' units which are organised as "foreign branches" could partly not be ascertained or only estimated.

The comparison nonetheless gives a picture of the relative sizes and trends in the banking market in CEE.
