DEEPER CONNECTIONS Dear Colleagues in the shared ministry of Jesus Christ: Comings and Goings . Farewells have been shared with colleagues who are leaving the North East District for new appointments in other districts or new seasons of life (such as retirement!). Now we welcome those with whom we serve side-by-side in our shared connectional ministry. Below in this newsletter is a list of those we welcome to the North East District. Rev. Dr. Stephen R. Herbert, VP-Exec. Director

This month featuring…Bowden UMC!

Your District’s New Church Development’s best kept secret!!!......

Something many people don’t know about New Church Development is what I call the “Alpha & Omega” ministry. That is, we are responsible to start new churches…and we are responsible for churches once they are closed! The Holy Spirit continues to amaze as He opens doors “making disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world.” As the old saying goes, “When the Lord closes a door, somewhere He opens a window.” So it is in the unfortunate circumstance when a local congregation must close their current church. In this position of Director of New Church Development, I’ve definitely had my eyes opened as to how the Lord uses closed churches for His Kingdom’s sake. It may be the end of one particular United Methodist church, but it’s often an open door for an up-and-coming Christian group desperately seeking a place of worship. Bowden United Methodist Church, 2025 Pullman Avenue, Jacksonville, is our district’s most recent example. This closed church became literally an answer to prayer for an African-American Christian group that has been blessed in consistent growth and sorely needed a bigger, and nicer, place for ministry in this specific area! The North East District was able to provide our closed Bowden UMC to this group of Christian brothers-and-sisters to worship in. They had their initial worship service on the July 4

th weekend. Since the move for them is an exciting surge of

independence and freedom from previous restraints to ministry, it was very meaningful to them to have their first Sunday in their new facility on Independence Day weekend. It’s exciting to witness how the Holy Spirit uses even closed churches to advance the Kingdom of God!

Monthly District UMVIM News…

The recent Tropical Storm got our attention! We read about disasters elsewhere, and are just that - "elsewhere". Now it's home, it's us. As soon as the waters are down and conditions are safe, United Methodists will be called into action. I will need individuals who are willing to help with clean up as we move into a time of short term recovery. Pastors - PLEASE DO NOT let teams go out to work without my knowledge. There will be a system after assessments are done of sending teams out into our district.

If your church is willing to send a UMVIM team into our district for short term recovery, please send me the team leaders name and contact information ( [email protected]). If you have any questions, please call me at 904 468 0529.

Does your Church have a plan for protecting people and property? Hurricane Season is barely a month old and already we've had four named storms! In fact, as you read this, some of you may still be "enjoying" the much needed rain from Tropical Storm Debby or maybe you're in the midst of cleaning up the aftermath. One thing's for sure, Debby's slow movement across the state shows us there's no such thing as "just a tropical storm..." and even the mildest of such storms can cause flooding, high winds and tornadoes. So - is Debby your wake up call? Does your church have a plan for protecting people and property? Do you know how you'll minister in your community after disaster? If your community isn't affected by the disaster, do you know how to help the communities that are? We have a long season ahead and the best disaster response is to have a plan. Need help? Visit www.flumc.org/DisasterRecovery and you'll find a local church planning guide, a hurricane preparation checklist and links to other web sites offering helpful information. You'll also find contact information for your District Disaster Coordinator who's there to answer questions and provide assistance. Would your church be interested in learning more about disaster ministry? We're always looking for churches to host disaster ministry training. Right now we're scheduling for late summer and fall. Give us a call at (800) 282-8011 Ext. 148 or email [email protected] or [email protected]. We're here to serve you! Here are some reminders . . . CLAIM REPORTING NUMBER: 800-282-8011 X 137 800-282-8011 X 199 (alternate number) DAMAGE MITIGATION / TEMPORARY REPAIRS: Please take all necessary measures to mitigate further damage to your facility. Please note that you do not have to wait for the field adjuster to arrive at your location to begin to dry out your facility or make temporary repairs. Keep all receipts for any temporary repairs completed and photograph or video all damage. ADJUSTERS: Damage claims will be handled by a professional adjusting company that specializes in catastrophe claims. Claims will be prioritized by the catastrophe response unit based upon the extent of damage and an adjuster will be dispatched to your location as soon as possible. The Race to Reach Out Seminar

A One-Day Seminar by Dr. Doug Anderson Wednesday, August 29 from 8:30 am to 5:00 pm at Ocala West United Methodist Church

Cost is $49 per person (including lunch). $15 cancellation fee after August 25, 2012 Bishop Rueben Job Center for Leadership Development

This seminar designed and led by Doug Anderson, will help pastors and lay teams understand the unique and important ministry of hospitality and assimilation of newcomers to help them experience a life transforming encounter with Jesus Christ. As Lyle Schaller shared, "Systems produce what they are designed to produce" So learn how to design an assimilation system that produces disciples, and not inactive members. The insights from this seminar help participants to develop an effective process of assimilation and discipling by focusing on helping newcomers to belong to the church and to Christ - not primarily on membership as the goal. Using the analogy of a relay race to describe this exciting ministry, the goal is assimilation - and membership is the "victory lap"! The seminar guides participants in developing a consistent and effective assimilation process of newcomers that starts with attracting newcomers; moves to hospitality when they arrive; identifying them as newcomers for follow up; responding to them quickly; making a listening visit to hear their needs, interests, talents and gifts; inviting them to a place to participate and belong, based on the listening; and then inviting to membership after they are assimilated and discipled. Participants will learn practical skills, strategies, and models to be equipped for this essential ministry of connecting people to the church and to Christ in the race to reach out! And bring a team of several persons because this ministry takes a dedicated, motivated team to do it well. The Race to Reach Out by Douglas Anderson and Michael Coyner has won OUTREACH Magazine's 2004 Best Outreach Resource in the area of Church Connection as "an Effective resource for church follow-up, Connection and assimilation of guests or unbelievers toward biblical community with a local church". LEADER: Dr. Doug Anderson is executive director of the Bishop Rueben Job Center for Leadership Development at Dakota Wesleyan University. He is also Associate Director for Congregational Development with the Indiana Annual Conference. He was a district superintendent and pastor of several growing churches of different sizes in the United Methodist Church. He has led a variety of practical church seminars and consultations for over 20 years. He is a member of the Academy for Spiritual Formation of the Upper Room. And best of all, his seminars are energetic, effective and fun. Registration will be available soon.
