From the Editor

Greetings,

We have seen the Lord!

As we enjoy the beautiful summer weather and all it brings, we are mindful of those who have suffered great tragedies in parts of Canada, and our thoughts and prayers are with them. As usual, League members have forgotten their own needs and extended a helping hand. One example is shown in the item from St. Peter’s Parish Council in Calgary (page 8).

Others were moved to help the suffering in Haiti through the recycling of milk bags (page 4).

National President Betty Anne Brown Davidson has been travelling the country attending diocesan and provincial conventions. At the same time, other members of the national executive have represented her at various conventions. (Read Judy Lewis’ account of her attendance at the New Brunswick provincial convention, page 6.)

Check out the world’s longest banner for organ and tissue donation story (page 9) and the story of members who have seen the Lord in women in shelters; their story is told in pink bags (page 5).

Speaking of conventions, the diocesan and provincial conventions have all taken place and the planning team in Regina, Saskatchewan, is ready to welcome roughly 900 delegates to the national convention. Congratulations are extended to the six newly-elected provincial presidents: Dorothy Johansen (Alberta-MacKenzie); Monica Brechka (Manitoba); Rita Janes (Newfoundland and Labrador); Betty Colaneri (Ontario); Suzanne Wiseman (Quebec); and Marge Szabo (Saskatchewan).

Next month, stories from councils in Newfoundland and Labrador will be highlighted, but stories from across Canada are also welcomed. The deadline for entries is July 31st, and the next issue of Be League will be online on August 15.

I am looking forward to a wonderful convention in Regina!

God bless,

Cecile Miller National Chairperson of Communications

BA’s Bonne Aventure

And more miles went by…

I journeyed to St. Basil parish in Ottawa to speak about my trip to Rome for Pope Francis’ inauguration with the official Canadian delegation. Also attending were representatives from four other parish councils, including the new Ottawa diocesan president.

Before the big floods came, the campus of St. Mary’s University College in Calgary was the site of the Alberta Mackenzie provincial convention. Behold, a treasure! They are in possession of the Saint John’s Bible which Dr. Gerry Turcotte spoke to us about on gathering day. Other speakers informed us about the successful female graduates of Newman Theological College and the Catholic Psychotherapy Association of Canada.

The celebrations have begun as St. Louis Parish Council in Waterloo, Ontario, has entered its 90th year. They know how to throw a party! We enjoyed sipping tea from china cups and saucers provided by the council’s very first

members back in 1924. Dedicated, long-serving members were honoured and council history papered the walls with photos, headlines and certificates. The organizers rose above equipment failures with smiles and aplomb. Congratulations to this healthy “seedbed” of League activity in the Hamilton diocese.

And finally, the national resolutions committee deliberated for two days at an airport hotel in Toronto over 11 resolutions submitted from provincial councils across Canada. It was an intense time of prayer, research, word-smithing, discussion and planning in preparation for the national convention next month in Regina.

July brings the Ontario provincial convention in Thunder Bay before we catch a few of the lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer. I am looking forward to seeing many of you very soon; may God bless us all!

Congratulations to our winning Catch the Fire! councils!

These councils have won the grand prize: the waiving of national per capita fees for all members of

their parish council.

These councils had the highest participation to membership ratio in their province.

We thank all facilitators for their dedication to offering Catch the Fire! With their enthusiasm and devotion, Catch the Fire! was presented to 3,510 members in 463 parish councils across Canada. We look forward to even more participation next year!

Spotlight on New Brunswick Our Lady of Loretto Parish Council, Dieppe President Gisèle Westfield reports council members have been participating in the “Recycle Milk Bags for Haiti” project by collecting colourful plastic milk bags to transform into mattresses, blankets, curtains, doors and handbags. The members have taken the project to various seniors’ homes where residents link “loops” (plastic previously cut by other volunteers) together and roll them into skeins of “plarn” (plastic yarn). The plarn is then crocheted by residents and members into mattresses or small square seats for children to use at school. The mattresses help protect people from direct contact with the soil, leading to a reduction in the spread of hookworm, small worm-like parasites that enter the human body through the skin. Gisèle says members meet one hour per week and anxiously look forward to each session.

Immaculate Conception Parish Council, Rexton Joyce Leblanc, provincial chairperson of resolutions, reports parish council members have been filling pink bags with toiletries and other items for the past eight years and donating them to Serenity House, a safe haven for women and children fleeing domestic violence. Joyce says the initiative was started by Isabelle Vautour, a member for over 50 years, who made the bags herself. After Isabelle passed away six years ago, members continued the tradition. Every November, the pink bags are delivered to Serenity House where workers divide the items so women will have daily necessities. Joyce says Serenity House is grateful for the donations. The pink bags, filled with toiletries and other items,

are often overfilled.

St. Michael Parish Council, Moncton Eileen Caissie, past chairperson of spiritual development, reports St. Michael has a very active spiritual program the council is quite proud of. 20-30 minutes at the beginning of every parish council meeting is devoted to spiritual development. Eileen says some of the topics and activities covered over the past three years include the history of the rosary (members recite the rosary but not many know where it began); the gifts of the Holy Spirit (to encourage members to recognize and use their unique gifts); and being women of peace and hope, and how members can pass that on to others. Various sessions were done on the seasons in the liturgical year, such as Advent, Lent and Pentecost. These sessions focussed on topics such as forgiveness, helping others, patience while waiting for God, love, new life or beginnings, giving thanks, and recognizing the miracles that occur every day.

“Through spiritual development we can learn from each other, support each other and, most importantly,

go out and support those in our communities who may need us but

just don’t know how to ask.” –Eileen Caissie, St. Michael Parish Council

St. Augustine Parish Council, Moncton

President Linda Cormier and Chairperson of Communications Patsy Murray report the parish council year-end potluck dinner was very well attended with 35 members. Also in attendance were Parish Council Spiritual Advisor Fr. Laurence Quin-Morris, and four new members who will officially join this fall.

St. Bernard Parish Council, Moncton

Member Angela Kinden reports council members were concerned about the accessibility of the parish for many years so members embraced financial campaigns for the installation of an elevator. The council has two major fundraisers annually: the Holly Tea in November and the Shamrock Card Party in March. Proceeds from these two fundraisers were donated to the elevator fund. Members also helped the Knights of Columbus and St. Bernard’s Building Committee with their fundraisers, which included church suppers and raffles. Angela says the council was able to raise $20,000 for the parish capital campaign since 2007 and the elevator, costing over $1-million, was installed debt free.

National Secretary- Treasurer Judy Lewis writes, “I had the honour and privilege of attending the New Brunswick provincial convention in Bathurst June 7-9. The national president was unable to attend due

to previous commitments in Calgary, and I agreed to represent her by bringing her greetings at the opening mass and presenting a workshop on our theme We Have Seen the Lord.” Judy carries the

Canadian flag at the opening mass in the photo, above.

Council News St. Peter Parish Council, Calgary, Alberta Member Sheila Harrison provides an example of how plans sometimes change for the greater good. Sheila says the council’s Trunk Treasures Sale, which would have helped raise funds for a new parish kitchen, was much anticipated until the recent flooding in Alberta cancelled the event. Although the cancellation was a disappointment, the resourceful ladies pooled resources with the parish volunteer appreciation event and delivered loads of food to the drop-in shelter for the homeless. “We have seen the Lord in the faces of all those in need,” Sheila says.

Star of the Sea Parish Council, Surrey, British Columbia

Life Member Ann Dobie submitted this photo which shows the results of council member Ann Thibault’s enthusiastic coupon clipping. Ann, with the help of council members, manages to provide several organizations and charities with much needed household items, sometimes for free. Through family and friends, Ann discovered extreme couponing online where several sites send daily reminders and tips via e-mail to help save money. The items in the photo were donated to Our Lady of Good Counsel Society Domestic Abuse Services.

Church of the Ascension Parish Council, Qualicum Beach, British Columbia Chairperson of Communications Sandi Digras reports a successful bridge luncheon was held April 19th where over 100 players enjoyed a delicious lunch and over $1,200 was raised for the many charities the council contributes to throughout the year.

A birthday party was held at Arrowsmith Lodge in Parksville on April 16th. The party honoured eleven people celebrating a birthday in April. Musicians played the piano and the accordion, and lemon layer cake was served. The council reports it was delightful to see the birthday honourees’ faces light up!

Finally, a beautiful stained glass window (left) was purchased for the parish council’s 75th anniversary. The design was created by Nina Passarello, a member of St. Peter Parish Council in Nanaimo.

Our Lady of Peace Parish Council, Peace River, Alberta Member Maria Stranaghan has been an advocate for organ and tissue donation awareness since her daughter died many years ago. Two years ago, Maria started handing out metre long pieces of material for people to decorate in memory of loved ones who passed away or in honor of a charity. The result is 536 banner segments and documented participation from five provinces. You can read more about the world’s longest banner for organ and tissue donation at www.worldslongestbanner.blogspot.com.
