The Crafters and other women of St. Paul’s have made and sent dozens of Izzy dolls to children in three different countries. Izzy dolls were inspired by and named after Canadian soldier Master Cpl. Mark Isfeld who. While serving in the Middle East, he often came across children with no toys or personal possessions, so his mother, Carol Isfeld, knitted little dolls that he could give away to the kids. Isfeld was killed in Croatia in 1994, and his mother has since died. But the legacy of the Izzy dolls lives on. Millions of dolls have been made. Here at St. Paul’s, Barb Kieffer learned about the dolls and told the Crafters and others about them. Soon, dozens were knitted and sent via family members to Honduras, Haiti, and Puerto Rico. Scott & Jean Lee’s granddaughter, Gretchen Lee, brought several dozen of the Izzy dolls with her on a mission trip to Ponce, Puerto Rico. Gretchen told Scott and Jean that as she was passing out the dolls, she noticed a wheelchair-bound man had taken a liking to the dolls. So, she gave one to him. Overcome with emotion, the disabled man broke down in tears, Gretchen said. So, you could say that Izzy Dolls bring comfort and joy across the globe to children of ALL ages. The congregation of St. Paul’s UMC is invited to join together at
the same time every day to pray one prayer. Every day at 7:24 —
morning, night, or both — stop whatever you are doing and pray
this prayer:
This is a prayer for discernment. Before we take any new action
or begin any new ministry, we believe it is essential to pray for
God’s direction.
As we pray, God promises to respond: "Ask and it will be given to
you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to
you" (Matt. 7:7).
Why the time of 7:24? This time reminds us of another promise,
found in Matthew 7:24,
“Everyone then who hears these words of mine and acts on them
will be like a wise man who built his house on rock.” Mt 7:24,
NRSV.
To assist you in your praying, everyone present in worship will
receive a card printed with the words to the above prayer, and
the time reminder to pray.
Believe in the power of praying together and believe in the Power
of God to answer!

Dear St. Paul’s family,

Last year as Lakeside for Youth was winding down, Marcella asked our kids what they gained from their experience. I think you will agree their words were powerful:
I plan to be more open with my faith.”
“I have opened up to people this week and I don’t do that. I have a better understanding of love.”
“I feel more spiritual. I plan to make an im-pact by thinking of others more.”
“I learned I can really be myself and God loves me. Reading the Bible faithfully can make an impact.”
“My experience through prayer, and the friends I have made, changed me.”
“I was able to open up this week and learn to accept and trust people.”
“I am seeing that there can be joy in the trials, if we have endurance and cling to God.”
This year even more of our kids are attending Lakeside for Youth, which means St. Paul’s is renting two cottages this year instead of one. Cottage rentals are expensive! However, in-stead of thinking of this as another expenditure, I ask you to consider this an investment in our mission of raising up disciples of Jesus Christ. Because, that’s what it really is, right?

In an effort to maximize our food pantry’s capacity to serve those in need, the pantry
announces plans to expand our facilities shelving capacity by approximately 50%.
By increasing our storage/display areas, we can take advantage of many more opportu-
nities from our area food banks in acquiring foodstuffs at little or no additional cost to
us. This redesign and expansion will enable us to “shop smarter” with our food dollar
budget.
Our plans are to “gut” the pantry room and purchase new steel wire shelving to re-
place it. This redesign will resemble a typical grocery store aisle whereby our clients
may shop as in a grocery store setting, pushing newly purchased grocery type carts.
The pantry would like to invite our fellow church members and friends to share in this
project with any monetary contribution you would wish to consider. It is our hope
to raise $4,000 to cover the cost of this project. This new approach will go a long way
in strengthening St. Paul’s commitment to our mission’s program. Donations can go to
Marie, Scott, or in the offering.

Does the Food Pantry Really Make A Difference?
The Answer is YES.
Volunteer Bill Degler Responds
Volunteers at St. Paul’s Food Pantry experience the
gamut of stories from our clients who come through
the doors each week.
Two personal experiences stand out.
One was a boy, four years old. He came up to the
pantry room and was waiting with his mother for their turn. That particular day we
had a delivery of candy bars. I was in the hallway passing them out to the children.
As I handed the little boy his candy bar, tears filled his eyes and he started to hug
me. I’m rather tall and he was short, so the only thing he could hug was my leg. He
held onto me for a long time, saying “Thank you!” over and over. If something like
that doesn’t grab at your heart, you don’t have one!
Another instance involved a young woman who was shopping for her family. Due
to circumstances, she had absolutely nothing in the way of groceries at home. As
we started to fill her box, she started weeping. In my effort to get her to feel bet-
ter and to stop crying, I started placing more and more groceries in her box. But
that did just the opposite. She started crying more and more!
These clients and their stories are the reasons why we, the volunteers — and St.
Paul’s — do what we do.

Did you know that one of our members, Betty Everett, is a writer and has several of
her published books in our church library?
One of these books is, Ira Sankey: First Gospel Singer. Ira was born in 1840 in
Pennsylvania and grew up Methodist becoming a Christian at a revival when he was
16. Singing, playing the piano and organ, teaching Sunday School and becoming the
choir director of his church were all talents that Ira possessed.
In 1861, as the north and south became engaged in war, Ira enlisted in the army. Then
in 1863 Ira and Fanny Edwards became husband and wife. In the late 1800s Ira joined
Dwight Moody, the evangelist, and together they saved many lost souls for Christ.
You can read the entire story of Ira and Fanny Sankey in this book found in your
church library, Room 104. Come check it out! You’ll be glad you did.
The UMW is now collecting supplies to assemble Health Kits, Layettes,
and School Kits, and you can help.
Relief-supply kits help provide care for the most
vulnerable people and make a tangible difference in
their lives.

Historical Timeline On Display in the Library
On Heritage Sunday, May 21, the people of St. Paul’s remembered, gave thanks, and celebrated 190 years on this corner of Wayne and Third.
A big “Thank You” goes to two gifted and talented women, Jane Scott and Betsy Hileman. Jane created a beautiful historical timeline of our years in Defiance from 1827 to today, and Betsy gifted St. Paul’s with a beautiful sketch of a log meeting house, St. Paul’s first house of worship in 1827. Betsy based her drawing on descriptions written down by our early pioneer settlers, as well as photos of other log churches from that era.
