Our Savior’s Shared Journey

“I Am God’s Dwelling Place;

The Heart of The Apostle Paul for Today”

By the time you read this Sunday Morning Worship at Our Savior’s will

have already explored a couple weeks of “I Am God’s Dwelling Place; The

Heart of The Apostle Paul for Today.”

In so many ways, today’s world resonates with the same challenges

that faced the first followers of Jesus. The Holy Spirit is present and active

but God’s people are easily distracted from Jesus’ instructions about what

that Spirit is designed to be accomplishing in and through God’s people.

At the very start of the Church, Jesus called out Saul of Tarsus to be a per-

sistent worker and advocate for sharing the knowledge of the presence of

God in the hearts of all people, all nations; everyone. Last summer we ex-

plored a good portion of the story of Saul—now mostly known by his Greek

name, the Apostle Paul.

We will spend time this summer exploring The Apostle Paul’s life and

teaching, especially as it connects with the need for God’s people, the

followers of Jesus, to live fully as the presence of God in today’s world. The

church needs to be re-rooted in the basic understanding of who Jesus

can be in any culture and time. The Apostle Paul took the message of Je-

sus deep into a world that had little understanding of love and grace,

deep misunderstandings about God and the divine, coarse misappropria-

tions of so-called religious practice. Our world is plagued by many of the

same struggles and too much of Christianity has lost its way to the peace

Jesus constantly delivers.

Franciscan writer and teacher Richard Rohr proposed, in a series of de-

votional writings this spring, several ways that The Apostle Paul’s message

can encourage and empower the followers of Jesus—us—to be the pres-

ence of Jesus in this world. Those suggestions form the inspiration for this

summer’s series that will be explored by Pastor Karen, Soon-to-be Pastor

Christina and myself, along with a deep draw on the Biblical record of the

Apostle Paul’s writings.

There is powerful encouragement awaiting us each Sunday in this journey

with the presence of Jesus, and I am on that journey with you.

A limited number of our yellow God’s Work Our Hands T-shirts are also still available for $8 each. If interested in a T-shirt, contact the office. If we have enough interest, we may place an order for additional shirts but would need to do so by July 15

th. Wearing the shirt helps to let the wider community know we are Lutherans who support our community.

Thank you to everyone who returned their yellow caution card. After comparing mailing costs, it has been deter-

mined that we would not save any costs by cutting down our mailing list below 200. So it has been decided to

keep mailing out the Messenger to everyone, unless you chose emailed or picked up. You can find copies on the

Welcome table in the Narthex. We have heard from many who are now getting their Messenger emailed!!

Thank you!

Mission Appeal

REJOICE! RENEW! REACH! Here it is! Your update on our upcoming mission appeal. No doubt you have heard discussions

throughout the past months regarding our capital campaign. As a group of believers, our mission, “to

know Christ and to have others know Him, “reflects the driving purpose behind our existence as a con-

gregation. It speaks clearly to our mission. Remaining true to that mission and as we move forward to-

gether, this fund raising drive will from now on be referred to as our “Mission Appeal”, rather than capi-

tal campaign.

REJOICE, RENEW, REACH! This feels like a wonderful summary of what we hope to accomplish.

Together, we REJOICE in God’s abundant blessings in our community of faith, and His eternal promises..

Therefore, we are empowered to RENEW our individual and collective commitment of faith and trust in

Him. And that is why and how we are able to REACH outside our walls and into our community and our

world.

Your Mission Appeal Leadership Team (fondly referred to as “M.A.L.T.”) has had our first meeting, and is

excited to begin working to support and expand our ministry. Mark your calendars for Sunday, Septem-

ber 17 as we will gather for worship and kick off our Mission Appeal. This is your opportunity to meet

and hear from Pastor Nancy Amacher, who will lead us through the entire process. The Mission Appeal

Consecration is planned for Sunday, October 29. On this day Lutherans around the globe celebrate

the 500th anniversary of the Reformation. Here at Our Savior’s, we not only celebrate our history, but

also our future as pledges will be received and consecrated.

Stay tuned for more information, feel free to bring your questions to any of the MALT members, and

most of all, please prayerfully consider your part in our mission, pray also, for your leaders, for your

church, and the entire community of believers.

Together, and by His might we do rejoice, we will renew, and we can reach out!

Haiti Mission – Ministry in Medical Missions Update While I was in Haiti last February, I had the pleasure of

working with Dr. Manno and his staff to get a small autoclave

set up so they could properly sterilize the few instruments they

have in the clinic. The clinic has only a few items that use

electricity – a microscope, a small centrifuge, a small suction

machine, a small refrigerator and now the autoclave. The

autoclave cannot function well however due to the inconsis-

tent supply of electricity. Consequently we are currently rais-

ing funds to help provide a generator for the clinic.

In addition, the Ministry in Medical Mission (MMM)

group has a fund to help offset the cost of diabetic supplies for

the many very poor diabetic patients that Dr. Manno provides

care for free of charge. If you would be interested in support-

ing either of these efforts, contributions may be given to

OSLC with a memo line item designating it to the Haiti mis-

sion or MMM.

Seminary support for Christina

Some have asked how to financially support Christina in

her studies at the seminary. The church has a designated ac-

with a note on the memo line or on the envelope requesting

that it go to Christina’s seminary expenses. Your support

will be greatly appreciated.

Jesus was this summer.

Church Properties (Marty Rye) Spring Clean Up: was very successful. We had more church members and Cub Scout members and families show up this year than in

years past. I would like to thank folks very much for their hard work and willingness to share their time and energies to remain good

stewards of the facilities.

Boiler: We had some maintenance performed on the boiler and the thermostats. This should help improve the performance and protect

our investment.

Parking Lot Patch: Thank you to Gene Wiersma for facilitating the parking lot patches. It was very helpful and will allow another couple

of years of service.

Mowing: Thank you to Don Unulock for mowing this year. It is a lot of work and is much appreciated. Looks great. We could use some

additional help trimming this year as well (talk to Marty if interested) The past two years Bruce Larson and Jon Herbert have done the

trimming. Bruce plans to continue this year and he will contact Jon to see if he is willing to do it also.

Water Heater: Apparently an issue with the water heater in New Horizons and replacement is needed. This should be accomplished very

soon.

Non-new Sign: One of the next projects we will look at is brightening up our sign out front – perhaps with some LED lights.

Lights (non-sanctuary): We are looking at possibly replacing some florescent bulbs with LED lights in the halls (to start) to increase the

illumination and decrease the cost.

28th. Liz Sinisalo and Brad will alternate playing every other week. The new monitor is up in the back of the church. Lindsey is inter-

ested in doing sign language to music one Sunday a month for the summer. Brad suggested Lindsey try it the 3rd Sunday of the month

as that is when the Praise Team is singing.

WELCA (no report)

NHCP (Lindsey Weiers)

There is no new business to report. We had a successful school year with high enrollment. The NHCP Board will meet later this week.

Old Business: 1. Capital campaign update

2. This team met along with members of CAT and the Stewardship team to get to know each other and lay the ground work over the

summer for a fall Mission and Capital appeal. Dates selected were to have the Kick Off on the weekend of September 16/17th and

the Consecration Sunday on October 29th. Team members are: Pastor- Pastor Chris; General Chair- Mary Krohn, Communications-

Cindy Haglin; Spiritual Emphasis - Peggy DeCaigny; Hospitality - Irene Rudnicki; Advance Personal Contacts - Jerry and Katie

Nisula; Follow-up - Rick Raun; The role of leader for Children and Youth involvement is still open.

Words can be important! “Capital Campaign” vs. “Ministry Appeal” etc. We discussed and the group felt they preferred the “Ministry

Appeal” language for the fall fund raising campaign. Each of the Ministry Appeal team leaders will be working on building a team. Rich

recommended that this Ministry Appeal leadership team be empowered to set goals and priorities for the use of the funds raised.

3. Chili Cook Off Fundraiser results: Chili cook-off netted $1324.54 and the silent auction made $1003 for a total of $2327.54!

3. Team Member Recruitment update and identification of ongoing needs.

New Business: 1. Semi-Annual Meeting Format – a motion was made by Jan and seconded by Mary that on the Sundays of the congregational meetings

in January and April we have only one service at 9:30. Motion passed.

2. School District Rental Agreement Update- a new 2 year contract will the school district will start August 1st and they will pay the

church approximately $900/month for 24 months.

3. “Outward” vs “Inward” in our works. Pastor Chris encouraged all teams and activities whenever possible to have an outward compo-

nent. For example a percentage of the bake sale funds would go out to the community.

4. Next PPC meeting June 20, 2017

Treasurer’s Report: (Bruce Larson)

April was our best month since last fall. Revenues were $700 over budget and expenses were $1600 under budget. YTD we are 3,000 in

the red but the pendulum has swung in our favor now. Bruce is looking into the possibility of a wireless credit card kiosk for the narthex.

The meeting was adjourned at 8:52 pm with The Lord’s Prayer.

Respectfully submitted,

Jan Larson acting secretary

SIMPLY GIVING

For those of you who use Simply Giving for your offering, there are pink cards available in the pews for you to use. How it works: To show your support of using Simply Giving, place the card in the offering plate. It’s that easy. This gives other members a visual and reminder of the Simply Giving program. If you are not enrolled in Simply Giving, and would like to be, there are forms in the office, in the Narthex, and on our Church website. www.oursaviorscloquet.org

OUR SAVIORS CUPS FOR SALE Cups with the new Our Saviors logo are available for sale for $10 in the Fair Trade Store. Some have told us

that $10 is a bit expensive; however, the cups cost almost $6 to make, and this is a fundraiser.

Thank you to all who purchase cups! The Evangelism Team
