1 Vol. 4, No. 5 July 2019 OPPORTUNITIES MET, OPPORTUNITIES AHEAD a view by J. Eric Elliott, Archivist ince 1753, the Moravian Archives has been documenting our churches, our families, and our communities. There have always been challenges with collecting, preserving, and sharing the records of Moravian endeavors these past 266 years. Some would be found in the maintaining of any set of records for that length of time, some in the nature of sustaining an institution for that length of time, and some unique to circumstances. Our $300,000 annual budget is funded in nearly equal shares by the Southern Province of the Moravian Church, the Salem Congregation of Moravian churches and annual and planned gifts from individual financial contributors like you. The number of our annual giving donors decreased more than 25 percent in 2018, from 165 donors giving $29,122 in 2017 to 117 giving $24,185 in 2018. Gratefully we did not receive a decrease in our apportionment from either the Province or Salem Congregation these past two years. And while individual donations declined, we are equally grateful that there was $7000 in new and increased giving to our Archives. Times change and your Archives Commission is mindful of the challenges and opportunities those changes bring as it explores new funding sources and attracting a new generation of supporters. In gratitude for your generosity, the Commission invites our Friends to its 2019 Annual Supporters Appreciation Night on September 19. Details will be sent to our current donors mailing list, but it will include a brief program outlining our work this last year and the hospitality Moravians value. This newsletter will show that Friends turning challenges into opportunities is already an ongoing Archives tradition. S In This Issue Opportunities Met, Opportunities Ahead Hold This Date! OPPORTUNITIES MET, OPPORTUNITIES AHEAD a view by J. Eric Elliott, Archivist

ince 1753, the Moravian Archives has been documenting our churches, our families, and our communities. There have always been challenges with collecting, preserving, and sharing the records of Moravian endeavors these past 266 years. Some would be found in the

maintaining of any set of records for that length of time, some in the nature of sustaining an institution for that length of time, and some unique to circumstances.

MORE ARCHIVES NEWS

he next volume of Records of the Moravians Among the Cherokees is now at press and set for an early fall release. We are grateful for Richard Starbuck’s healing from surgery and his good work. Volume 9 covers the years 1830-1834 and is subtitled “March to Removal,

Part 4: ‘They Shall Not Be Forsaken.’” This ongoing work is made possible by a grant from the Cherokee Nation.

The Archives Commission welcomed three new members this spring: Christine Ebert (Ardmore), Paul Knouse (Home) and Barry Miller (Konnoak Hills). Our thanks to outgoing members Scott Brent (Friedland), Pat Nelson (Ardmore) and Mike Sloan (New Philadeplphia). John Larson (Home) was elected Chair for 2019. As the governing body, Commission members oversee Archives operations. Other members are: Toni Bigham (New Philadelphia), Peggy Carter (Fries Memorial), Heather Fearnbach (Home), Michael Gwyn (Ardmore), Kirk Sanders (Home), and Rev. Scott Venable (Fairview).

Giving Opportunities: Corporate Matches, Planned Gifts

In January we received a matching corporate gift from the Reynolds American Foundation thanks to the initiative of Betsy Bombick, who knew the Foundation already supported other Moravian agencies with public outreach services. Check with your employer. Our Moravian records give insights to families as well as the greater community, and much of our historical material is open for use by the public.

In July 2018 the Archives received its first distribution from the Christian David and Dorothy Sohn Weber Mission and Ministry Fund. In January 2019 we received a generous contribution from the donor-advised William A. and Eleanor W. Starbuck Charitable Fund. We are most grateful for the assurances these planned gifts make toward our future. Types of planned gifts include bequests, charitable trusts, charitable gift annuities, qualified retirement plans, and donor advised fund grants. Please consider supporting the Moravian Archives through a planned gift. To discuss your options, please call Chris Spaugh at the Moravian Ministries Foundation at 888-722-7923 or visit their Web site at www.mmfa.info.

MORAVIAN STUDIES COLLABORATIVE WELCOMES REYNOLDA CONFERENCE

n November 5, 2018, the Archives hosted a first meeting of local academics, independent researchers, and Moravian record-keepers in

Forsyth County. Meeting monthly, this Moravian Studies Collaborative aims to better share thematic research opportunities and support individual work. The goal is to develop diverse formats for sharing research with one another and various publics, partnering with area cultural and educational institutions to offer public symposia and conferences.

A first fruit of this collaboration was the May announcement by Wake Forest University that a Mellon Foundation-funded Reynolda Conference Grant had been awarded to Professors Grant McAllister (German) and Ulrike Wiethaus (Department for the Study of Religions) for their proposal, “Becoming American: Moravians and their Neighbors, 1772-1822,” to be held April 15-18, 2020. The Archives will work with these Wake professors to plan public and academic portions of this event in the community.
