*Prayer of Confession

We give thanks, merciful God, that in Christ you seek to unite all things in heaven and on earth, and to reconcile all people to one another and to you. Yet, we confess that the new creation is not yet complete in us. We feel everywhere the barriers that separate humankind. We even contribute to building them. Forgive us, we pray, and fill us with your Spirit of oneness, that we may help tear down the walls between your people; through Christ we pray.

(time for silent confession) And let God’s people say: Amen.

*Affirmation of Faith (from a portion of A Declaration of Faith)

The Holy Spirit unifies the Christian church. The Spirit gives us a unity we cannot create or destroy. The Spirit moves among us not to end diversity or compel uniformity, but to overcome divisiveness and bitterness. The Spirit leads us to struggle against the lines of race and class, the ambitions of competing parties, and the loyalties to individuals and traditions that divide us. The Spirit impels us to make the unity of Christians visible to a divided world, and assures us that we shall be one.

Call to Prayer (hymn 466)

(first time, choir; second time, all) Come and fill our hearts with your peace. You, O Lord, are holy. Come and fill our hearts with your peace. Alleluia!

Prayers of the People - with The Lord’s Prayer (ecumenical version) Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and forever. Amen.

WORSHIP NOTES

Today is the fourth installment of this month’s

sermon series entitled, “Five Essential Questions

in Life.” The series is inspired by James Ryan’s

commencement address to the 2016 graduating

class from Harvard’s Graduate School of

Education.

Our introit today comes from the rich and varied

worship resources created for use in the Iona

Community, an ecumenical Christian commu-

nity of men and women from different walks of

life and different traditions in the Christian

church. It was founded in 1938 by George

MacLeod, and has a strong commitment

to ecumenism and to peace and justice issues.

JIM ALLEN’S CD AVAILABLE

Copies of a CD of Jim Allen’s music will be

available in the fellowship hall following worship.

The tracks on the CD are recordings of Jim’s

playing, recorded in the MIDI system in the

sanctuary organ. Suggested donation per CD is

$20. Checks should be made out to FPC, with

“organ CD” on the memo line. Contributions will

go to the organ maintenance fund.

The music will be toe-tapping and heart-stirring!
