This year, for his 20th anniversary with CarmelFest, he’s reprising that role, taking over for former CarmelF- est chairman Gary Frey. “Gary set up an excellent organization, so my job this year was to come in and not break anything,” Wor- rell said. “We have a great team. They all are experts at what they do. So my job has been to facilitate and make sure we’re all marching down the same road. But the experts in each area continue to do their job, and do it very well.” The job is a year-round endeavor, culminating in the CarmelFest celebration over Tuesday and Wednesday that has seen as many as 50,000 participants in years past, according to estimates by the Carmel Police Dept. The festival employs 38 police officers during the parade, six at all times on site, two teams of roving paramedics and numerous firefighters who always are on site. And the festival’s budget has grown to $200,000, which needs to be raised each year. “That’s a big nut to crack,” Worrell said. “It takes ev- erything from major sponsor like St.Vincent Health and Firestone to selling somewhere around 5,000 Spark Buttons.” Spark Buttons, now an iconic part of CarmelFest, be- gan as an idea Worrell borrowed from his hometown in 1994 to serve as a supplementary fundraising source. “Part of the reason I got involved [in CarmelFest] was that my dad was heavily involved in our Fourth of July celebration when I was growing up,” Worrell said. “And Spark Buttons came from that. “I think the first year I might have sold 50 buttons if I was lucky. No one knew what they were,” Worrell said. “But they’ve really grown and taken off. Now when I’m working a farmers market, it’s really cool to hear people say they’ve bought one every year since 1995 or whatever.” Worrell said he sometimes hears criticism about how difficult it is to fund a $200,000 event with $3 Spark But- tons (light-up Spark Buttons are also available for the first time this year at $6), but sees them as an integral part of the celebration. “I believe it’s important for the community to not rely on the St.Vincents of the world, but to pitch in and help support the celebration,” he said. “A lot of kids Chairman Jeff Worrell celebrates his 20th year with CarmelFest CarmelFest Chairman Jeff Worrell stands in front of the City Communication Tower -- the red light at the top of which will be the signal that you can see the 4th of July fireworks. In 1992, then-eight-year Carmel resident Jeff Wor-rell joined the CarmelFest committee as a way to get involved with the community. In 1994, he served as the chairman.

This year, for his 20th anniversary with CarmelFest, he’s reprising that role, taking over for former CarmelF-est chairman Gary Frey.

“Gary set up an excellent organization, so my job this year was to come in and not break anything,” Wor-rell said. “We have a great team. They all are experts at what they do. So my job has been to facilitate and make sure we’re all marching down the same road. But the experts in each area continue to do their job, and do it very well.”

The job is a year-round endeavor, culminating in the CarmelFest celebration over Tuesday and Wednesday that has seen as many as 50,000 participants in years past, according to estimates by the Carmel Police Dept. The festival employs 38 police officers during the parade, six at all times on site, two teams of roving paramedics and numerous firefighters who always are on site. And the festival’s budget has grown to $200,000, which needs to be raised each year.

“That’s a big nut to crack,” Worrell said. “It takes ev-erything from major sponsor like St.Vincent Health and Firestone to selling somewhere around 5,000 Spark Buttons.”

Spark Buttons, now an iconic part of CarmelFest, be-gan as an idea Worrell borrowed from his hometown in 1994 to serve as a supplementary fundraising source.

Now when I’m working a farmers market, it’s really cool to hear people say they’ve bought one every year since 1995 or whatever.”

Worrell said he sometimes hears criticism about how difficult it is to fund a $200,000 event with $3 Spark But-tons (light-up Spark Buttons are also available for the first time this year at $6), but sees them as an integral part of the celebration.

“I believe it’s important for the community to not rely on the St.Vincents of the world, but to pitch in and help support the celebration,” he said. “A lot of kids

will come up and buy one and I’ll say, ‘Now you’re an owner in CarmelFest,’ and I think that’s really important.”

That sense of community, Worrell added, is what he finds so special about the festi-val.

“We’ve got four stages, but it still has that hometown, small-town flair,” he said. “For our parade, the night before, people will put out their tents, put out their blankets and lawn chairs, and in the morning they will still be there, you’ll still have your reserved spot. No one will have bothered them. That’s kind of that small-town flair.”

During his 20 years with CarmelFest, Wor-rell said he has plenty of stand-out memo-ries. In particular, he remembered the years when the festival invited Richard Jewell to serve as the parade grand marshal.

Jewell was a security guard at Piedmont College in 1996 when he discovered a pipe bomb in Centennial Olympic Park during the Olympic Games, being held in Atlanta at the time. He alerted the police and helped to evacuate civilians. He was initially considered as a suspect in the bombing at-tempt, leading to a media frenzy around his personal life. He was eventually completely exonerated, and was honored in 2006 by Georgia Gov. Sonnny Perdue for his service.

“I will never forget the standing ovation our crowd gave to Richard Jewell as he came through,” Worrell said.

For this year’s celebration, Worrell said new regulations in light of last year’s Indi-ana State Fair stage collapse have proved

to be one of the biggest challenges. To address them, the committee produced a 29-page emergency preparedness docu-ment.

“We used to deal with police and fire and say, ‘OK, this is what we’re going to do if it rains,’” Worrell said. “Now we have shelters that are manned and emergency routes; it’s a lot more complicated.”

Finally, Worrell said he wanted to address a concern he’d heard from many due to burn bans implemented by many cities in the wake of this summer’s hot, dry condi-tions.

“There will be fireworks, no matter what,” Worrell said. “Our fire department is all on top of this. We’ll have a pumper truck. We’ll have several fire trucks as well as ATV vehicles that can get into grassy areas. But the biggest advantage is our shoot area is mostly gravel.”

It’s especially important to Worrell, he added, because he always looks forward to the fireworks in particular.

“We’ve bumped it up a little bit on the fireworks, so it’s a bigger show this year,” he said. “My107.9 FM has done a production at the beginning of the fireworks that we’ve never done this year. But the fireworks, syn-chronized to music, that’s probably always my favorite part.”

Commentary by Jeff Worrell

Welcome to the 24th edition of the “Greatest Festival in Indiana,” CarmelF-est. I anticipate you will enjoy the fruits of a year’s worth of planning by our dedicated team of volunteers. The CarmelFest Committee, 60 members strong, and the Rotary Club of Carmel are proud to present to you what surely will be the biggest and best CarmelFest ever. The committee members should be congratulated for doing their work usually behind the scenes and some-times, in very uncomfortable conditions. I am humbled by their talent.

I would also like to direct your atten-tion towards our wonderful corporate sponsors. This group of loyal, local com-panies goes above and beyond giving their financial support to insure we bring you quality entertainment and spec-tacular fireworks in a safe and beautiful environment. Special thanks to our pre-senting sponsors St. Vincent Health and Firestone. I trust you will always consider ALL CarmelFest sponsors when choos-ing where to spend your money.

Thank you to the thousands of Carm-el citizens who took personal pride and ownership in CarmelFest by purchas-ing a Spark Button. We still have many more to sell, but I am overwhelmed by the individual generosity of people who live in Carmel. I ask you to proudly wear

your Spark Button as a public symbol of your love and appreciation for this great community and our mighty coun-try. Personal sponsorship is alive and well in Carmel!

As you enjoy the many activities oc-curring over our two-day love affair with America, please note the hundreds of police officers, fire fighters and street de-partment employees working on what is a holiday for you and me. I am continu-ously awed and inspired by the dedi-cation and professionalism we receive from this special group of hard working people. Thank you is not enough, but I am sure, greatly appreciated.

It might be easy to look at Carmelf-est as just a great big party and only as another reason for a day off. But I challenge you to spread the word and set an example for the generations of Americans yet to come. CarmelFest is about our nation’s founding. It is about those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom. It is about our beloved Unites States of America and how lucky we are to call ourselves Americans.

I hope you will join us at Carmel Civic Square on July 3 & 4 to not only remember patriots who have come before us to set this grand nation on a path of greatness, but also to help us preserve for the next generation a great small town, American tradition.

Mayor Jim Brainard will be the grand marshal leading the 2012 “St.Vincent Health Fourth of July Pa-rade” at CarmelFest. This year’s parade theme is “Carmel - Celebrating 175 Years,” in honor of the city’s 175th anniversary.

According to Parade Chairperson Peggy Powell, “Once this year’s theme was chosen, we knew the best choice for grand marshal would be Mayor Brainard. His lead-ership has guided our community and helped us grow.”

Brainard is Carmel’s first five-term mayor. Under his tenure, the population of Carmel has grown from 25,000 to nearly 80,000; park land, green space and trails have increased from 40 acres to more than 800, includ-ing the Monon Trail and Central Park; and the city has seen the creation of City Center, Carmel’s new downtown and the Arts & Design District.

“I am honored to be the grand mar-shal in this year’s CarmelFest Parade,”

said Brainard. “There is no better time for the community to come together to celebrate our nation’s freedom and Carmel’s 175th anniversary than Car-

melFest. This event has been the city of Carmel’s annual Fourth of July tra-dition since 1987, and we are proud of the popular-ity and success that it’s gained each and every year and welcome the opportunity it provides to showcase our com-munity.” This year’s parade steps off July 4 at 10:30 a.m. starting at AAA Way and Carmel Drive, and ends at Carmel High School. More than 100 entries are

expected to take part in the parade, including marching bands, clowns, a salute to the military, dancers, color guards and entertaining floats. There are also plans in the works for F-16 Fighter Jets to fly over Carmel, signaling the start of the parade.

For more information about CarmelF-est and the parade, please look for Current in Carmel’s special CarmelFest section at the end of this month.

Performing the music by these clas-sic artists, and also bringing along a few tunes from their own repertoire are Gordon Bonham, Doug Henthorn, Paul Holdman and Benito DiBartoli. These

men will epitomize the word “talent” as they teach us all a lesson on rock 'n roll’s greatest instrument.

“Guitar-mel Fest” is the brainchild of the show’s very own Benito DiBartoli. Benito had a yearning to perform a show that would be an honorable trib-ute to the instrument that has brought himself and countless others such au-dible delight. Benito and all of the guys hope that you and your family will en-joy this unique performance that is sure to be a Carmel Fest “instant classic!”

As the 4th of July, quickly approach-es, the CarmelFest committee wants to remind residents and inform visitors of the fireworks rules in Carmel and ask that appropriate safety precau-tions are followed so that everyone can have an enjoyable and safe holiday.

Carmel City Ordinance requires that – Fireworks can only be used between 5 p.m. and midnight on June 29 & 30, July 1 – 3, and July 5 – 9. Hours are extended on July 4th so that fireworks can be used between 10 a.m. and midnight on that date only.

There is an increased danger of vegetation fires due to the lack of rain this year, so extra precautions need to be taken to ensure that grass or vegetation fires do not break out from sparks, cigarettes, cookouts or fireworks.

Fireworks will be displayed on Independence Day as the finale to the two-day CarmelFest celebration taking place on July 3rd and 4th, or-ganized by the Rotary Club of Carmel. Extra precaution will be taken due to the dry conditions to ensure that the fireworks display is safely executed.

The fireworks will be staged just north of City Center in a gravel lot. Festival patrons are encouraged to

get comfortable and watch the fabu-lous display planned this year.  If you are wondering where to best view the fireworks, if you can see the blinking red light on the antennae near the Water Tower in Old Town, you should be able to see the fireworks.

Event organizers have gone to great lengths to locate the fireworks display in a location that best suits our need for viewing, safety, and mitigation of traffic control.  By locating the display in a gravel lot, we can keep main roads open and affect very few busi-nesses. This location is also easier to block off and keep pedestrians from coming too close to danger.

As in years past, the Carmel Fire De-partment will have fire trucks strategi-cally placed during the display so fire-fighters can react quickly in the event of an emergency.  We also have firefighters placed on roof tops and all around the immediate area to watch for any firework debris that might not extinguish before coming back down.  The area of the Monon Greenway has the only vegetation in the immediate area, and due to the narrow design, it is relatively east to control if debris would land there.  There is a specially equipped all-terrain vehicle on hand to quickly respond to any emergency along the Monon Greenway.

RE-THINK CHURCH

Sermon Series on Ephesians

There are a lot of new editions to CarmelFest this year, and the KidZone is home to many of them.

This area – located on the south side of Carmel City Hall – will be decked out in red & white striped tents, provid-ing the nostalgic feel of carnivals from days-gone-by. The variety of rides and games offered will appeal to the “kid” in everyone. Long-time favorites will be back including pony rides, Euro Bungee and whacky inflatables. New additions will include an expanded petting zoo (featuring the world’s smallest buffalo), gigantic inflatable castles, a variety of games, boats and more.

“The CarmelFest KidZone grows every year with expansions in the types of rides, an array of fantastic games and

family-friendly entertainment on the Kid-Zone Stage,” said festival co-chair Peter Primason.

Primason said he is especially pleased to have magician CR Ryan acting as the stage MC (as well as performing his own blend of magic in shows throughout the day).

KidZone Stage performances are free. (See page 12 for a complete schedule of entertainment.) Rides and games have a nominal charge. Tickets cost 50 cents each, with ride and game prices ranging from 3-14 tickets. Net proceeds from the KidZone benefit local charities. The KidZone will also have performers and characters walking through the festival area to entertain and delight festival-goers.

KidZone offers free family fun

By Cindy Roberts-GreinerMore than 90 talented soloists au-

ditioned for the 2012 CarmelFest Has Talent vocal competition. Performers, ranging in age from 5-79 years old, sang their hearts out during round-one of the contest. According to CarmelFest Has Talent Chairperson, Marnie Glanner, “The musical talent was remarkable and the variety of musical genres performed was notable with hip-hop, jazz, opera, scat, country, show tunes and pop favorites.” Some vocalists decked out in suits or se-quined gowns - while other performed in relaxed jeans. But, they all had one thing in common … They just love to sing.

The panel of judges and CarmelFest committee members were extremely impressed with the level of talent, profes-sionalism and courage demonstrated by all of the contestants. It was not easy, but the judges did select the 30 Semi-Finalists (10 from each age category) to go to the next round of competition.

Plan to enjoy the amazing talent of these phenomenal performers and to cheer on your favorites at the CarmelF-est celebration on July 3rd & 4th. Semi-Finals are will be held on Tuesday – July 3rd from 3:30 – 6:45 pm on the “Franklin University of Ohio Gazebo Main Stage” at CarmelFest. Finals will take place on July 4th at 3:00 pm.

This year’s judges included: Chris Lewis - Director of the Michael Feinstein Great American Songbook Vocal Academy &
