FIFTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST July 5, 2020, 10:30 am

Lutheran Church of the Cross, Nisswa, Minnesota Rev. Drew Bakken

GOOD MORNING & WELCOME TO LUTHERAN CHURCH OF THE CROSS! Welcome to worship as we come together in praise and thanksgiving to our living Savior!

Holy Spirit, blow through our church with power. Open our hearts to follow your call.

INTRODUCTION The mystery of God’s ways is sometimes hidden from the wise and intelligent. Jesus associates with those often excluded from the religious community. Like Paul, we struggle with our own selfish desires and seek God’s mercy and forgiveness. We gather to be refreshed by Christ’s invitation: “Come to me, all you that are weary.” Gathered around word, water, and meal, we find rest for our souls.

PRELUDE “Here I Am to Worship”

1. Light of the world, You stepped down into darkness, opened my eyes, let me see. Beauty that made this heart adore You, hope of a life spent with You.

Chorus So, here I am to worship, here I am to bow down, here I am to say that You’re my God And

You’re altogether lovely, altogether worthy, altogether wonderful to me.

2. King of all days, oh so highly exalted, glorious in heaven above. Humbly You came to the earth You created, all for love’s sake became poor.

To Chorus

Bridge And I’ll never know how much it cost to see my sin upon that cross. (repeat) To Chorus

Chorus Bless the Lord, O my soul; Worship His holy name. Sing like never before, O my soul; I’ll worship Your Holy name.

1. The sun comes up, it’s a new day dawning, it’s time to sing Your song again. Whatever may pass, and whatever lies before me, let me be singing when the evening comes.

2. You’re rich in love and You’re slow to anger. You name is great and Your heart is kind. For all Your goodness, I will keep on singing; ten thousand reasons for my heart to find.

3. And on that day, when my strength is failing, the end draws near, and my time has come; Still, my soul will sing Your praise unending, ten thousand years, and then forevermore!

CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS In the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hid: Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you and worthily magnify your holy name, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. But if we confess our sins, God who is faithful and just will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

Most merciful God, We confess that we are in bondage to sin and cannot free ourselves. We have sinned against you in thought, word and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. For the sake of your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew, and lead us, so that we may delight in your will and walk in your ways to the glory of your holy name. Amen.

Almighty God, in his mercy, has given his Son to die for us and, for his sake, forgives us all our sins. As a called and ordained minister of the Church of Christ, and by his authority, I therefore declare to you the entire forgiveness of all your sins, in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

GREETING

The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the refining fire of the Holy Spirit, and the peace of God, which surpasses understanding, be with you all. And also with you.

HYMN OF PRAISE “You Are Holy” HYMN #525

You are holy, You are whole, You are always ever more Than we ever understand. You are always at hand. Blessed are you coming near. Blessed are you coming here To your church in wine and bread, raised from soil, raised from dead.

You are holy, you are wholeness, You are present. Let the cosmos praise you, Lord! Sing hosanna in the highest! Sing hosanna! Sing hosanna to our God!

PRAYER OF THE DAY You are great, O God, and greatly to be praised. You have made us for yourself, and our hearts are restless until they rest in you. Grant that we may believe in you, call upon you, know you, and serve you, through your Son, Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen. (please be seated)

FIRST READING Zechariah 9:9-12 The coming messianic king will inaugurate an era of disarmament and prosperity. Because of God’s covenant with Israel, the people are designated as “prisoners of hope.”

Rejoice greatly, O daughter Zion! Shout aloud, O daughter Jerusalem! Lo, your king comes to you; triumphant and victorious is he, humble and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey. He will cut off the chariot from Ephraim and the war-horse from Jerusalem; and the battle bow shall be cut off, and he shall command peace to the nations; his dominion shall be from sea to sea, and from the River to the ends of the earth. As for you also, because of the blood of my covenant with you, I will set your prisoners free from the waterless pit. Return to your stronghold, O prisoners of hope; today I declare that I will restore to you double.

Word of God, Word of Life. Thanks be to God.

SECOND READING Romans 7:15-25a Life captive to sin is a catch-22 existence in which we know good but do not do it and do things we know to be wrong. Through Jesus Christ, God has set us free from such a futile existence.

I do not understand my own actions. For I do not do what I want, but I do the very thing I hate. Now if I do what I do not want, I agree that the law is good. But in fact it is no longer I that do it, but sin that dwells within me. For I know that nothing good dwells within me, that is, in my flesh. I can will what is right, but I cannot do it. For I do not do the good I want, but the evil I do not want is what I do. Now if I do what I do not want, it is no longer I that do it, but sin that dwells within me. So I find it to be a law that when I want to do what is good, evil lies close at hand. For I delight in the law of God in my inmost self, but I see in my members another law at war with the law of my

mind, making me captive to the law of sin that dwells in my members. Wretched man that I am! Who will rescue me from this body of death? Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord!

Word of God, Word of Life. Thanks be to God.

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION “Alleluia” (please stand, as you are able)

Alleluia, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life, Alleluia. Alleluia!

GOSPEL Matthew 11:16-19, 25-30 Jesus chides people who find fault with both his ministry and that of John the Baptist. He thanks God that wisdom and intelligence are not needed to receive what God has to offer.

The holy gospel according to Matthew. Glory to you, O Lord.

[Jesus spoke to the crowd saying:] “To what will I compare this generation? It is like children sitting in the marketplaces and calling to one another, ‘We played the flute for you, and you did not dance; we wailed, and you did not mourn.’ For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, ‘He has a demon’; the Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, ‘Look, a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!’ Yet wisdom is vindicated by her deeds.” At that time Jesus said, “I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and the intelligent and have revealed them to infants; yes, Father, for such was your gracious will. All things have been handed over to me by my Father; and no one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and anyone to whom the Son chooses to reveal him. “Come to me, all you that are weary and are carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me; for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”

The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. (please be seated)

SERMON “Rest” Pastor Drew Bakken

HYMN OF THE DAY “I Heard the Voice of Jesus Say” (please stand as you are able during the last verse)

1. I heard the voice of Jesus say, “Come unto me and rest; Lay down, O weary one, lay down your head upon my breast.” I came to Jesus as I was, so weary, worn, and sad; I found in him a resting place, and he has made me glad.

Page 6: July 5, 2020 Fifth Sunday after Pentecost Online Worship › uploads › 9 › 4 › 3 › 0 › 94300933 › july_5_2020.pdf · 2 FIFTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTEOST July 5, 2020, 10:30

2. I heard the voice of Jesus say, “Behold, I freely give The living water, thirsty one; stoop down and drink and live.” I came to Jesus, and I drank of that life giving stream; My thirst was quenched, my soul revived, and now I live in him.

3. I heard the voice of Jesus say, “I am this dark world’s light; Look unto me, your morn shall rise, and all your day be bright.” I looked to Jesus, and I found in him my star, my sun; And in that light of life I’ll walk till trav’ling days are done.

“The Spirit Intercedes For Us” HYMN #180

The Spirit intercedes for us with sighs too deep for words to express oh, oh, oh. Larry Olson©1989, Augsburg Fortress; Dakota Road Music; OneLicense A-704268

PRAYERS OF INTERCESSION Called into unity with one another and the whole creation, let us pray for our shared world.

We pray for the church. Sustain us as we share your word. Embrace us as we struggle to find our common ground. Lift up leaders with powerful and prophetic voices. Free us from stagnant faith. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

We pray for all in need. For all who are tired, feeling despair, sick, or oppressed. Take their yoke upon you and ease their burdens. Give your consolation and free us from all that keeps us bound. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

We give thanks for those who have died in faith (especially). Welcome them into your eternal rest and comfort us in our grief until we are joined with them in new life. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

God, our peace and our strength, we pray for our nation and the world as we face new uncertainties around coronavirus. Protect the most vulnerable among us, especially all who are currently sick or in isolation. Grant wisdom, patience, and clarity to health care workers,

especially as their work caring for others puts them at great risk. Guide us as we consider how best to prepare and respond in our families, congregations, workplaces, and communities. Give us courage to face these days not with fear but with compassion, concern, and acts of service, trusting that you abide with us always. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

Receive these prayers, O God, and those too deep for words; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

THE LORD’S PRAYER Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen. (please be seated)

BENEDICTION Neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor rulers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus. God, the creator, + Jesus, the Christ, and the Holy Spirit, the comforter, bless you and keep you in eternal love. Amen.

SENDING SONG “Mine Eyes Have Seen the Glory”

1. Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord; He is trampling out the vintage where the grapes of wrath are stored; He has loosed the fateful lightning of his terrible swift sword: His truth is marching on.

Refrain Glory, glory! Hallelujah! Glory, glory! Hallelujah! Glory, glory! Hallelujah! His truth is marching on.

2. He has sounded forth the trumpet that shall never call retreat; He is sifting out the hearts of men before his judgment seat. Oh, be swift, my soul, to answer him; be jubilant, my feet! Our God is marching on.

3. In the beauty of the lilies Christ was born across the sea, With a glory in his bosom that transfigures you and me. As he died to make men holy, let us live to make men free, While God is marching on.

Creation Care Green Tip The journal Science reported in April that about 1/4 of the world's terrestrial insects have perished in the past three decades, with even larger declines in the Midwest, which loses 4% of its bug population annually. Playing a major role in this decline is chemical-intensive, monocultural agriculture that not only destroys the biodiversity of habitat that insects need, but also relies on insecticides that indiscriminately kill the good bugs along with the bad. According to science writer Brooke Jarvis, entomologists have found that for every one species of pest, there are 1,700 species of insects we can't live without. In studies that compared conventional industrial farms with regenerative farms (no insecticides, using multi-species cover cropping, no-till, and integration of livestock via rotational grazing), the journal Peer J - the Journal of Life and Environmental Sciences reported that regenerative farms had many more quantities and varieties of beneficial insects, which keep harmful insects under control. Regenerative farms are also more profitable, because they didn't pay for insecticides and expensive genetically engineered "stacked" seed varieties. They also had more fertile soils requiring less purchased fertilizer. BE AN ADVOCATE of changes to our farm programs that will support regenerative agriculture.
