July 5, 2020—Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time
“Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest.
Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am meek and humble of heart;
and you will find rest for yourselves. For my yoke is easy, and my burden light.”
Thanks to the many generous volunteers we are now able to welcome you back for in-person
participation for various Liturgies. Please note that in order to attend any of the services pre-
registration is required. You may do so by going to our website or by calling the parish office at

REPRESENTING GOD, JESUS, AND THE SAINTS
“Representation” -- one’s attempt to describe or depict someone or something else – can be more or less
accurate. Every religious system represents God, gods and other beings, visible or invisible, through artefacts that
are not God or the gods themselves, but depictions of them: human creations; approximations.
Jesus was a first century Palestinian Jew, but as Christianity spread, representations of him were re-shaped
by artists or craftsmen. First century Palestine gradually became history, and images of Jesus took on features of
local cultures and historical eras, often losing the look of a Palestinian first century Jew.
God was a different matter: how do we represent a spiritual or non-human being? The bible speaks of
divine attributes, using similes and metaphors. God is represented as father, judge, warrior, king, even mother
And the incarnate “son of man” is not always depicted as a generic Palestinian Jew but a specific person with vari-
ous roles and statuses (shepherd, companion, brother, miracle-worker, teacher etc.), exhibiting a range of human
traits which could be represented (or re-presented) in myriad forms.
As Christianity spread globally, and the world itself became globalized, people became increasingly aware
of the many different representations of religious beings, persons, and themes, influenced by cultural and historical
factors. The eighth century Iconoclastic Controversy was a century-long dispute in the Greek Church and East-
ern Empire, about the veneration of images (icons). Some called them idols; others claimed they impeded the
spread of Christianity among Jews and Muslims. Polarization and persecution followed. In 787 the Council of
Nicaea approved of icons, appropriately venerated; but a second Controversy erupted, and the final tragic out-
come was the breach between the Western and Eastern Church in the Great Western Schism of 1054.
Today, the challenge of representation is still with us. The movement defending Black Lives or the
LGBTQI movement defend their adherents’ right to speak for themselves and not be represented by other people
or media. Likewise, when in 2019, effigies used during the Synod on the Amazon were thrown into the Tiber
(and later retrieved), some people were scandalized by these “idols,” and others by the “vandalism.” But Pachama-
ma, Earth Mother of Andean people, is widely assimilated into Christian devotion and iconography across South
America, as Mary, mother of all people. Some represent Pachamama as an idol, while others see that as almost sac-
rilegious disrespect for indigenous religion. Pope Francis apologized to the Amazonian people, but Cardinal
Mueller railed against “pagan idols” and a breach of the First Commandment.
Think of indigenous carvings of Jesus; a black African-American, Asian, or Native American Jesus; Gua-
dalupe (la Morenita, the brown lady); the Infant of Prague; or the Baby Jesus. Icons or idols? Worshiped or ven-
erated? It depends how they are represented, and by whom. We have different tastes and traditions but should
respect differences, cultural, ethnic or religious; God made difference, and therefore it is good.
