Oremus pro invicem “Let us pray for each other”
Father Edward C. Hathaway, Rector
THE BASILICA IN PHASE THREE Phase Three of Virginia’s reopening plan began on Wednesday, July 1, with further
easing of public health restrictions associated with the slowing spread of COVID-
19. Current procedures will remain the same for Mass here at the Basilica with
every other row of pews taped off and social distancing of six feet between house-
holds. Parishioners 10 years old and older are expected to wear face coverings in the
church. As always, our concern is to protect the health of all Basilica parishioners,
visitors and staff.
Bishop Burbidge is continuing the dispensation from the obligation to attend Mass
on Sundays and Holy Days of Obligation until further notice. Those who are 65
years old or older, and anyone with underlying health conditions, are encouraged
to stay at home and to avoid gatherings of the general public and attending public
liturgies. Our Masses will continue to be live streamed via our website each day so
you may “attend” from the safety of your own home.
You can keep up-to-date on parish procedures via our website and by signing up to
receive our regular e-newsletter at https://stmaryoldtown.org/email-sign-up/.
REMEMBERING THE MARTYRS OF THE CHURCH The Church liturgical calendar is filled with feast days honoring individuals who
were killed because of their religious beliefs or because they refused to renounce
Christ or His Church. “Martyrdom is the supreme witness given to the truth of
the faith: it means bearing witness even unto death.“ Catechism of the Catholic
Church 2473
This week is a good example. July 6 we celebrate the feast day of
Saint Maria Goretti, who died at the age of 11 when she refused the
physical advances of a young man who shared her family’s home.
After he stabbed her 14 times, Maria was taken to the hospital where
she died forgiving him. July 9 is the feast of the
Martyr Saints of China, Augustine Zhoa Rong and
his 119 companions. These Chinese and Western
missionaries died between 1648 and 1930 because
of their ministry to the people of China and, in some
cases, for refusing to renounce their faith.
Martyrdom was an early part of Christian identity. Saint Stephen is considered the
first martyr, stoned to death in Jerusalem in 34 A.D. Eleven of the Twelve Apostles
traditionally are believed to have died as martyrs with only John dying a natural
death at an old age. Saint Peter was crucified in 64 A.D.; Saint Paul was beheaded
in 67 A.D. Stories of the bravery and devotion of the early Christians prompted
many conversions as people were attracted to a new religion for which so many
people would willingly die.
Few of us – if any – will ever actually die for our Catholic faith. But we can seek
to embody the courage of the martyrs by defending the Church and its beliefs,
including those things we profess in the Creed at Mass and Church teaching on the
issues such as the sanctity of life, marriage between a man and a woman, and gen-
der identity. In fact, Scripture tells us we should not “be ashamed of testifying to
our Lord” (2 Timothy 1:8). We also experience small acts of martyrdom in facing
the trials and tribulations of our daily lives, in sacrificing our own comfort, wants
and needs for others.
Holy Martyrs of the Church, pray for us!

July 6 Saint Maria Goretti, Martyr. Died in 1902 at the
age of 11. she was stabbed to death, preferring to die rather
than being raped by a 22-year-old neighbor. With her moth-

1950 before the largest crowd ever assembled at that time in
Rome. She is the patroness of teenage girls.
July 9 Saint Augustine Zhao Rong and Companions,
Martyrs. 120 mar tyrs who died between 1648 and 1930.
Most (87) were born in China; the group included four Chi-
nese priests. The 33 foreign-born martyrs were mostly
priests and women religious. They were martyred because
of their Christian ministry to the people and, in some cases,
because they refused to deny their Catholic faith.

TOMB OF THE UNKNOWN SOLDIER OF THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION As we celebrate the Fourth of July this weekend, we can look in our own backyard – literally – for a reminder of those who
fought during the American Revolutionary War (1775–1783).
In the early 19th century, laborers digging the foundation of the new Saint Mary Church inadvertently encroached upon the
churchyard of the Old Presbyterian Meeting House next door at 323 South Fairfax Street. In an act of true neighborliness and
ecumenism, the Presbyterians gave that small strip of land to the Catholic parish. “As our Catholic brethren have more use for
that little piece of ground than we have, it is not proposed to make any objections.” (From The Old Presbyterian Meeting House
at Alexandria, Virginia 1774-1874)
As they dug, the construction workers were surprised to find a coffin containing the remains of a man dressed in a Revolution-
ary War uniform. A new grave was immediately prepared a few feet away and the body re-interred in the Meeting House burial
ground. Conflicting dates are found for the discovery, but 1826 is noted in the Meeting House records.
We don’t know the name of the soldier originally buried in land that is now beneath the rear wall of the Basilica of Saint Mary
Basilica, but his legacy remains. William Gregory (1789-1875), a young man from Scotland, settled in Alexandria and became
an active member of the Meeting House congregation, serving as one of its elders for many years. One Sunday after services
there, while walking through the gardens, he told his young daughter Mary about the unknown soldier. Touched by the story,
she placed a flower on the grave, beginning a ritual in which she often was joined by her Sunday school classmates.
In 1926, Mary, by then an elderly lady, remembered the unknown soldier in discussing the
restoration of her church. She said she hoped his grave could be marked. Volunteers from the
local Post of the American Legion, who were there clearing the yard, immediately prepared a
temporary wooden marker. A permanent memorial was created by the National Society of the
Children of the American Revolution and dedicated on Lexington-Concord Day, April 19,
1929, with music provided by the U.S. Army Band and reportedly led by John Philip Sousa.
The epitaph on the monument at the tomb reads: Here lies a soldier of the Revolution whose
identity is known but to God. His was an idealism that recognized a Supreme Being, that
planted religious liberty on our shores, that overthrew despotism, that established a people’s
government, that wrote a Constitution setting metes and bounds of delegated authority, that
fixed a standard of value upon men above gold and lifted high the torch of civil liberty along
the pathway of mankind. In ourselves, his soul exists as part of ours, his memory’s mansion.
As we celebrate the Fourth of July, we might spend a few minutes in prayer at the final resting place of this unknown soldier
of the conflict that led to our nation’s independence.

From Your Saint Vincent de Paul Society
HELP URGENTLY NEEDED! An unprecedented number of our neigh-bors face yet another crisis: eviction. Without jobs, income or savings, those previously living paycheck-to-paycheck have seen their rent bills pile up for the past three months. With the moratorium on evictions ending last week, and the
number of eviction writs so large, our district court is expected to hold hearings in large batches daily. During the month of May, the crisis was food. In June, we shifted our Saint Vincent de Paul Society focus to rent, with 80 percent of our assistance going to help keep families in their homes. Lisa, a single mom with two boys, ages 8 and 10, lost her job and was only able to find part-time employment at a gro-cery. She used her funds to feed and clothe her boys and keep her home clean and safe. As her rent ar-rears grew, she got some help from us and others, but not enough. Her fears are profound, although she masks them in front of her boys. Please help us help families like Lisa’s stay in their homes until they can return to full-time employment. We welcome new volunteers and hope you will con-sider joining us. You also can contribute to our work via Faith Direct or writing a check to SVdP, dropping it in the Poor Box or mailing it to the Parish Office at 313 Duke Street, Alexandria, VA 22314.
Contact Jim Larocco at [email protected] for more information.
