Six PBA titles are in contention, with over $635,000 in prize money slated for distribution. PBA World Series of Bowling Coming to Las Vegasfive title matches will be taped for ESPN, along with the USA v. The World TV match (top 6 US v. top 6 Int’l. bowlers). Each animal pattern winner will earn $15,000 and a PBA Tour title.

The combined pinfall for those 60 qualifying games will determine the standings for the PBA World Championship (the first live PBA broadcast of the 2010-11 season). Top 8 ad-vance to a three-day telecast fi-nale. The winner earns $50,000 and a PBA major title.

South Point Hotel & Casino is offering promo hotel rates to

Joey Harris Hits 300 In Las Vegas Na-tional Deaf Mixed Tournament

HENDERSON — This writer did not get complete results of the 10th National Deaf Mixed Bowling Association Tournament held last June 22-24 at Strike Zone Bowling Center in Sunset Sta-tion Hotel and Casino. But thanks to Carl Malucci who reported that the only honor score bowled there was a 300 by Las Vegas’ Joey Harris. Malucci wrote that Joey rolled the Mixed Doubles event high game of 290 on the day before and in the next day’s Galaxy event’s semi-finals, without benefit of warming up or shadow bowling started off with 12 consecutive strikes in his first game for his 4th career 300. However, at the end of the Galaxy event Harris finished in 4th place. As proof of his latest 300, Harris did not have a copy of the recap but insted took a photo of the telescore on his Iphone and transmit-ted to this writer’s computer. This writer hopes to get the complete result as to who won this event as well as other NDMBA events and also more importantly the scores and numbers of entries.

Malucci Rolls His 47th 300, Talamantes 299 At Red Rock Bowl

LAS VEGAS — Carl Malucci reported that the two deaf teams in the Red Rock’s Tuesday (29th) Rocks II League had an exciting night with Abel Talamantes hitting a 299 in his 2nd game and finished with a 668 series. Then later a few lanes away Malucci himself, after games of 237-256, rolled a 300 in his third game for a 793 series. Joey Harris took a photo of the team’s scores on his Iphone and sent it to this writer as proof of the team scored 931 with the 300. The perfecto is Malucci’ career 47th, the most ever by deaf and/of hearing-impaired bowler and his 6th 300 of this 2009-10 season. That was the most Malucci has ever done in one season and tying what this writer was told earlier that DJ Powell, Indianapolis had already accomplished six perfectos this season.

Deaf Bowler Weldon Westmoreland Passed Away At 82

GLENDALE — Sad news was received that long time deaf bowler Weldon Westmoreland passed away last June 27 in his home three months short of his 83rd birthday. Weldon, a Texas na-tive who moved to California, got married and settled in Glendale, was an avid bowler. He bowled in deaf bowling leagues like So. Calif. Deaf Traveling, Golden State Deaf, and Intercity Deaf until his back ailment made him stop 12 or 15 years ago. Memorial service was held July 6 in GLAD auditorium. Wel-don’s wife Jenny preceded him in death. Our condolences go to his surviving two daughters and son, nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

National Deaf Bowling Hall Of Fame Nancy Buckmaster Passes Last June 23 SOUTH DAKOTA — Another sad news was received from Deaf Senior Bowlers of America secretary-treasurer Carol Moers, Denver that Nancy Buckmaster, one of the founders and secretary-treasurer of National Deaf Women’s Bowling Association, passed away last June 23. The cause of her death was not known but she had not been well for a long time. More will be written about her later when this writer finds more details.

LAS VEGAS — What an exciting week of megabuck bowl-ing at The Orleans in Las Vegas, NV! Our 2010 TAT Amateur Champion is Curt Guinn from Greenwood, SC for $20,000. 2nd Place was Brent Bowers for $10,000, 3rd was Tony Knuth for $7,500, 4th was Paul Carter our 189 & Under Handicap bowl-er for $6,000 and finishing 5th was our 205 & Under bowler Chris Martin for $5,000. All TAT competitors received at least 1 Brunswick High Performance Ball free with their entry with the first 300 entrants receiving a second Brunswick ball paid for by the TAT. All of the Brunswick High Performance balls that were given out are brand new balls that will not be released until July 12th!

This year’s 2010 TAT Amateur Classic had over 2000 entries with almost 400 bowlers. The Brunswick staff was on hand for the week and gave out 750 Brunswick bowling balls to TAT com-petitors in just 5 days! Although the entries were slightly below last year, the TAT still paid out all of its prize funds but was un-able to raise any prize funds like we usually do.

The thrilling Brunswick Challenge was held on Saturday and had 91 competitors which paid down 15 cash spots. 3 out of the Top 4 qualified for the $5,000 first prize and bowled a sudden death 1 ball roll-off to decide the winner. In the end Joe Lopez was the only one who could come up with a strike to take the trophy. Debbie Ayers from Cajhon, CA, Eric Acon from Plano, TX, and Brent Bowers from Mulvane, KS all received $1,000 for making The Brunswick Challenge Top 4.

Our two free Chance Tournaments each paid out $6,000 in Cash & Prizes and TAT competitors got up to 4 free squads just for entering along with up to 3 Brunswick Balls for free. Our First Chance winner was Kenny Calkins who bowled a 300 with the brand new Brunswick Revolver. Our Second Chance winner was Chris Klerk with a 290 and they both received $500 for their terrific efforts. We also gave out 16 KR Strikeforce Double Tote Bags and 8 KR Strikeforce Triple Ball Rollers and 14 of those were given to non-cashers by random drawings. All together the Brunswick staff gave out almost 100 KR Strikeforce bags all paid for by the TAT.

We would like to thank all of our amazing sponsors, Bruns-wick, The Orleans, KR Strikeforce, and OnTheBallBowling.com for making the TAT Amateur bowling events possible. Our TAT bowlers were thrilled with the help and expertise that were given by the Brunswick staff and even PBA Hall of Famer Johnny Pe-traglia and PBA Champion Tom Smallwood were on hand help-ing out our megabuck bowlers on the Brunswick Practice Range! On behalf of the entire TAT staff, I would like to thank all our bowlers and supporters for making this the greatest Amateur bowling tournament in the world! For results on The 2010 TAT Amateur Classic please visit our newly updated website www.tatbowl.com. For questions about this event or our next event in February call our toll free number 1-888-828-2695 or e-mail us at [email protected].

never thought it would happen at a tournament like this. I’ve had the front 10 before, but that’s it. I just really wanted it, and I’ve been waiting a long time for this moment.”

After watching her team-mate, Dana Blake of Haw-thorne, Calif., strike on her first nine shots Wednesday during their team event, Howard did her best to compose herself on each shot in the 10th frame.

She struck soundly on her first two deliveries, but experi-enced some added suspense on the final ball as the 7 pin was the last to fall.

“I was nervous as heck,” said Howard, who bowls league at AMF Midtown Lanes in Los Angeles. “I just wanted to keep the ball on line and not totally screw it up. I had been leaving a lot of 7 pins through-out the tournament, so the last shot was a little scary.”

Howard returned to the lanes in January after taking nearly a year off as she wel-comed her daughter, Kaylyn, into the world. After working herself back into the sport, she also prepared some new equip-ment for the event.

With her new equipment working well and a chance at the top spot possible, adding her name to the leaderboard was the least of Howard’s concerns going into the final game. Her main goal was to bowl a 700 series.

“I just wanted to get to 700,” Howard said. “I’ve started off strong like that be-fore, but tend to finish with a weak game, so I didn’t want to screw it up. I didn’t even think about taking the lead at all. But I’ll be on BOWL.com checking every day.”

Howard won’t have to spend too much time at the computer, however. The 2010 Women’s Championships is scheduled to conclude its 100-day run on July 4.

“I’m happy, very, very happy,” Howard said. “I came out here to have fun with my family and friends. I never ex-pected any of this. I can now say I have one major bowling accomplishment and that it’s a pretty big one. We’ll wait and see what happens over the next few days.”

For the Miami Herald, Evans wrote about all high school sports, college football, boxing, bowling, golf, tennis, water ski-ing, wrestling, horse/dog/harness races, jai-alai and also spent 14 months serving as interim religious editor.

He once organized and ran a Dade County High school base-ball tournament that featured North Miami High’s Steve Carlton (a Hall of Famer) and Fred Norman, a future star with the Chi-cago Cubs, in a taut pitchers duel at Miami Stadium before 3,000 spectators. During the Baltimore Orioles spring training season in Miami he organized a practice session with the O’s for all of Dade County’s high school baseball prospects.

His most successful promotion came when he teamed with Joe Tanenbaum of Gulfstream Race Track, drawing 56,000 en-tries from South Floridians to pick the best horse ever to run at Gulfstream. But his forte was bowling, a sport that he started covering for The Miami Herald in 1957.

Evans retired from The Miami Herald Dec. 31, 1989. How-ever, the native Miamian continued to cover the bowling beat for The Herald until he decided to end his Miami Herald career 20 years later.

Two of his brothers, the late Luther Evans and Lee Evans, founder of the Tournament of the Americas, also wrote sports stories for The Miami Herald. Thus stories under the byline of an Evans brother appeared in The Miami Herald from 1937 until 2009 except for two years during World War II (1943-44).

Evans was hired by the Professional Bowlers Association in 1990 as its media director for the PBA Senior tour. He worked 77 tournaments over the next seven years before stepping down.

In 1999, The Daytona Beach News-Journal asked Evans to write local bowling stories - one of these stories won the fea-ture story division in The Bowling Magazine’s national writing contest.

He continued to write tennis and bowling articles and stories for the Daytona Beach News-Journal until his death. His bowl-ing stories have appeared in every national bowling magazine published plus many local bowling publications. His stories have appeared on www.Bowlingdigitial.com for more than a decade which resulted in email comments from readers in Europe, Israel, Canada and Asia.

Dick Evans is survived by his wife Joan Gano Evans, son, Richard V. Evans, an attorney in Louisville, Ky. and three grand-children - Peyton, Carter and Walker.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be sent to the University of Miami, where Dick Evans attended on a schol-arship while working full time at The Miami Herald. Funeral ar-rangements are pending.

Men & Women’s Bowling Alliance

Tournament CancelledNORWALK—Since 1986

our dedicated group of volun-teers have continued to provide you with a wholesome and organized Annual Champion-ship Tournament. This year, in anticipation of our 25th An-niversary, we were once again well prepared and looking for-ward to our Celebration.

Unfortunately, with our en-tire country in a crisis of finan-cial burden, it is apparent that many of our bowlers have been impacted with having to reas-sess their financial priorities, and have been unable to partici-pate in this year’s tournament. Since the entries received were so few, we are unable to offer a substantial Prize Fund. There-fore, it is with the deepest regret that we advise you, we have CANCELLED the tournament scheduled for July 17,18,24,25, 2010. All Entry Fees received will be refunded to the respec-tive Team Captains.

In keeping with our plans for the future, we will be exam-ining some new ideas brought to our attention; i.e. “Would the Month of August be better for your team?” We invite your input either by mail, phone, Fax or Website.

We urge you to keep us on your list of “Things to Do” for 2011.

STUDIO CITY — THE TRUTH BE BOWLED! A motto couldn’t be truer than this and it can be heard echoing down the lanes as the summer heats up! Keep this in mind when figuring out what to do during your staycation or finding a way to spend some quality time with the kids while school is out for summer! Be it time with the kids, a night out with friends or your significant other, PINZ is the answer — THE TRUTH BE BOWLED!

ADULTS The summer leagues have started and are heating up! Mr. Nice even commented on how much fun the leagues are having and what a pleasure it is to see some new faces joining the fun! We would like to remind those who have started, that the good scores come from practice, practice, practice! This can be done at anytime and inquire on the times for a special league rate we offer our leagues! And someday maybe you can throw a score like these: Tavern Guild: David Quam 288/738, Tony Annibale 235/627, Darrell Tucci 223/616, Curt Zellers 236. Twilighters: Dan Coffelt 247/646, Allan Hammond 246/612, Dane Price 603, Radi Cohanim 244/603, Robert Lerman 227. Kings and Queens: Will Pisnieski 276/700, Tom Wigmore 225/632. Funseekers: Zoran Jacimovic 279/770, Keane Murakami 257/679, Ed Dusseau 237/635, Chuck Alexander 231/621, Bob Emery 619, Mark Mason 235. S.C.B.L.: Keane Murakami 259/689, Doc McCoy 225/638, Chris Bland 610, Dave Yamamoto 227/610, Bob Thomas 235, Michael Gehrke 225.

JUNIORS As the State Tournament for our juniors quickly approaches, we at Pinz couldn’t be more proud as we are now! To see these kids work hard, bowl well and show amazing sportsmanship it’s a testa-ment to our juniors as well as Pinz’s Junior League Coordinator: Barbara Lee! No one is more dedicated or caring as she.

SENIORS I overheard Bob Blumkin (Rose Blumkin’s husband) state the other day, “Man those seniors can bowl and look at them drop those pins! How Do they do it?” Well Bob, it isn’t just from sitting but for doing! Coming in every week, not to mention many years of practice! And there you go, the answer to Blumkin’s question and if you doubt me check out this past week’s scores: Happy Timers: Russ Romo 199/472, Ruth Swick 154/447, Sam Marion 419, Vicky Minceff 113/302, Joel Margolis 197. Coffee and Donuts: Donna Hickox 190/530, Christine Stark 178/510, Elayne Klein 179/496, Joan Karchem 174/479, Annie Block 477, Charlene Gaffney 188. Senior Social: Charlene Gaffney 214/469, Art Michener 443, Arthur Harris 173/429, Joel Margolis 160/423, Russ Romo 181/420, Teri Bonato 157. Breakfast Club Singles: Charlene Gaffney 167/468, Christine Stark 163/419, Donna Klein 158/379, Pam Vaughan 122/356, Doris Lazner 150/351. Joslyn Seniors: Russ Romo 226/532, Betty Duskhin 427, Joyce Rabinowitz 167/418, Gary Olsen 199/528, Lillian Klein-man 153. Bowler of the Week: The quam before the store is over because David Quam shot a 288 and a 738 series during Tavern Guild. What a great week for a great league president. Keep it up, the 300 is right around the corner. Sweetness Quote of the Week: “Sell cheap and tell the truth.” — Rose Blumkin
