SANCTUARY CANDLE AND MASS INTENTIONS

The Sanctuary Candle is burning this week to pray for the eternal rest of Gerry Orkus. To reserve a date to burn the Can-dle in memory of someone or for a special intention, please call the church office (522-3186). The Sanctuary Candle offer-ing is $15 for two weeks. The offering for Mass intentions is $5.00 per Mass.

During the Assembly of June 18-22 which was held in Perryville, MO, on the bicentennial celebration of the Vin-centian community in the USA, the confreres promulgated the following:

Vincentian Priests and Brothers Urge Protection for Immigrant Women and Children

“The Western Province of the Congregation of the Mission supports the statements of the United States Con-ference of Catholic Bishops, the Sisters of Charity Federation and other groups that separating immigrant children from their parents at the United States/Mexico border is immoral. We also oppose the recent decision of the U.S. administration that strips asylum protections for women who are victims of domestic violence, and others fleeing violence in their homeland. We urge the U.S. Attorney General, Congress, the courts and policy makers to protect the integrity of fami-lies and respect the dignity of every human person. We stand with our immigrant sisters and brothers in sup-port of their human rights.”

CHARTER FOR THE PROTECTION OF CHILDREN AND YOUNG PEOPLE

In response to the Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People from the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, the Archdiocese of New Orleans continues to make the Hot Line available for anyone who has been hurt or sexually abused by anyone who works for the Church. The Hot Line continues to be avail-able; the number is (504) 522-5019. In continuing our commitment to support and to heal, we invite and encourage individuals who have been hurt or sexually abused recently or in the past by clergy, religious or other employees of the Archdiocese to call our Hot Line and your message will be received confidentially by a mental health professional. Anyone can make a direct call during regular business hours to the Victims’ Assistance Coordinator at (504) 861-6253.

I will boast most gladly of my weaknesses, in order that the power of Christ may dwell with me. — 2 Cor. 12:9

PARISH CALENDAR

July 8 Children’s Liturgy of the Word (10am & 8:30pm)

July 19 St. Joseph Church Social “Movie Night” (6:00 pm)

OBSTACLES The prophet Ezekiel, Saint Paul, and the Lord Jesus share something in common in today’s scripture readings. They all experience obstacles to their ministry. Ezekiel is summoned to prophesy to the Israelites, who are “[h]ard of face and obstinate of heart” (Ezekiel 2:4). Saint Paul recounts how he has been given a “thorn in the flesh” (2 Corinthians 12:7). The Lord Jesus is unable to perform many signs in his native place. The Gospel tells us that “[he] was amazed at their lack of faith” (Mark 6:6). We too sometimes encounter obstacles as we travel along the journey of faith. So often we experience weakness on this journey. Let the words of the Lord to Saint Paul encourage us today: “My grace is sufficient for you, for power is made perfect in weakness” (2 Corinthians 12:9).

TODAY’S READINGS

First Reading — They shall know that a prophet has been among them (Ezekiel 2:2-5). Psalm — Our eyes are fixed on the Lord, pleading for his mercy (Psalm 123). Second Reading — I am content with weaknesses and hardships for the sake of Christ (2 Corinthians 12:7-10). Gospel — The people said: “Where did this man get all this? Is he not the carpenter, the son of Mary?”(Mark 6:1-6).

Pope Francis’ July Intention

That priests, who experience fatigue and loneliness in their pastoral work, may find help and comfort in their intimacy with the Lord and in their friendship with their brother priests, families and people they serve.

Training is available for Ministers of Holy Com-munion who would like to serve in a Hospital, Nursing Home or with those on Hospice. Tuesday, August 7, 2018 6:00 PM – 7:30 PM St. Charles Borromeo Parish Destrehan, LA
