Brothers and Sisters in Our Lord Jesus, From Fr. Tom Stehlik, CM

Thank you all for the love and support shown to me as I prepared for and had my surgery. I am most grateful for the prayers and concern. My surgery went well and I feel a bit stronger everyday as I recover.

The gospel last week tells us of the rich young man who was unwilling to part with his many earthly possessions in order to inherit eternal life. This should serve as a reminder to us all that we should give ourselves away in service to our Lord. Jesus invites us daily to be disciples of the Good News . What is it that we are holding on to that won’t allow us to be good stewards of our time, talent or treasure? What is keeping us from reaching out to those who are most in need among us? Whatever it is, surely isn’t worth forsaking a place in the Kingdom.

In this period of illness, I have learned that health is wealth. Health and vitality are gifts from God and the best way to honor that gift is to preserve it and use that gift to be the hands and feet of Jesus. It is my prayer to have a re-turn to good health and that I may continue to serve the Lord and all those He calls on me to serve. I ask for your con-tinued prayers for healing, and know that I will be lifting up your needs to the Lord as well.

PARISH CALENDAR

28 Oct. Sunday, Children’s Liturgy 10 am & 8:30 pm SJC

TOO MUCH INFORMATION! There is a common expression: “Too much information!” We usually use it when people tell us details about their lives that we don’t want or need to know. Today, when James and John ask Jesus a simple question, making their request for places of honor in the kingdom, a simple answer might have been in order. Instead, as he often does, Jesus answers a ques-tion with a question; today it’s about drinking the cup of suffer-ing. Then, once the others are indignant over James and John’s outrageous request, he proceeds to give them what may have been “too much information” for followers who were simply interested in the pursuit of glory. But this though it can some-times seem “too much” for us, is essential for our lives as disci-ples. In all readings today, we learn this information. It is in suffering, in weakness, in self-giving service to others, that we come to understand the kingdom. It is the information we need to find our place and come to be honored in the reign of God.

TODAY’S READINGS

TODAY’S READINGS First Reading — My servant shall justify many, and their guilt he shall bear (Isaiah 53:10-11). Psalm — Lord, let your mercy be on us, as we place our trust in you (Psalm 33). Second Reading — Let us confidently approach the throne of grace to receive mercy and to find grace for timely help (Hebrews 4:14-16). Gospel — Whoever wishes to be first among you will be the slave of all (Mark 10:35-45 [42-45]).

Pope Francis’ October Intention

That consecrated religious men and women may bestir themselves, and be present among the poor, the marginal-ized, and those who have no voice.

Congratulations:

to the Recently Baptized:

Dylan Lennox Bowmam
