High cost of high debt got you down? The solution is easier than you may realize!

Getting out of credit card debt is not so hard, but it will require a little bit of discipline and some commitment, at least for several months until you get on a roll. The trick to getting out of debt is to not use credit. How do you do that? Well, simply by keeping spending equal or less than monthly income. It’s really not that hard to do, but you may need to adjust some spending.

The first step is to review your leave and earnings statements and any other household income that you have. Add up your net monthly income so you know what you’re working with, and then add up your monthly expenses. Some of your monthly expenses will be pretty obvious such as car payment, electricity, mortgage payment, or rent; but others will not be so obvious. You may need to think carefully for a few minutes in order to list all the things that you regularly spend money on each month. Sometimes discussing this with a spouse, best friend, or accountability partner is helpful, or reviewing an online checking account.

Once you know your monthly income and monthly expenses, you have the components for a rudimentary plan. Remember, the goal is to not use credit. As long as you can meet your monthly expenses with your monthly income, your debt will collapse by itself. You may need to cut some spending in order to ensure you won’t have to use credit.

After not using credit cards for a few months, usually one of your accounts will be paid to a zero balance. Then, take the money you were paying on that account and add that amount to the amount you pay on the remaining highest interest rate account. This creates what is called a “debt snowball” and normally results in liquidation of consumer debt within 18 to 30 months.

If you need help with this process, please call the Financial Readiness Program Manager at 305.437.2645 or email [email protected].

WHAT’S UP IN MWR?The 8th annual KEYS100 was held the weekend of May 16 and 17, 2015. The race is a point-to-point event beginning in Key Largo--Marathon for the 50 mile race and Big Pine Key for the 50 Km race--and ending in Key West on the Atlantic Ocean at Higgs Beach. The KEYS100 includes four distinct competitions: individual races of 100 miles, 50 miles and 50 kilometers, and the original Florida Keys six runner 100 mile team relay race.

The relay format is a lot of fun, uniquely flexible and easy to organize. Each team is able to design their own race strategy. The team decides how many legs each team member will run and how long each segment will be, subject only to swapping runners at allowable locations. Teams are allowed to make changes to their plan during the race. This race also has an artistic side — coming up with a team name, decorating the team vehicle, even insulting the competition. Another bonus is the unique, Keys-focused awards. Being able to compete in a 100-mile race without running the entire distance alone really makes the KEYS100 a fun and exciting team sport.

This year several teams from SOUTHCOM competed in the KEYS100. Congratulations to all teams for completing the KEYS100.

Joint Warriors: Finished 2nd in the Military Division and 7th overall time of 11:49:50.3. Anthony Perez, Erelio Mesa, Trevor Brinton, Bryan Hammond, David Terpstra, Ramon Martinez.

Supersonic: Finished 4th in the Military division and 13th overall with a time of 12:29:44.7. Stephen Barber, Anthony Stong, Chris Muller, Richard Coble, Troy Lovely, Robert Wiltzius.

Team RWB South Florida: Finished 81st overall with a time of 16:10:44.8. Gigi Huelbes, Alvaro Perez, Murille Dennis, Wendy Mercado, Briceida Casas, Aura Rojas.

The SOUTHCOM Warriors Soccer Team competed in the City of Doral’s Adult Soccer League this season from March - May 2015. The team was

sponsored by the Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation (Family and MWR) Sports Department. The Adult Soccer League provides an opportunity

for community and professional organizations to participate in one of the most popular sports in the world. This is a great opportunity for all teams to

compete, network, and socialize.

The SOUTHCOM Warriors made it to the semi-finals this year.

Way to go Warriors! For more information on soccer or others

sports, please contact Jill Hauser at [email protected]

Career Program Guidance

Network extensively. Attend industry events, reaching out to friends, family, former classmates and colleagues, and check to see what career resources your alma mater offers (many provide extensive help to job seekers free of charge.)

Make the internet your friend. Utilize career-focused social media portals like LinkedIn to connect with former colleagues and bosses, join industry relevant groups, and request recommendations from past supervisors (and don’t forget to make sure your digital presence

is squeaky clean!)

Reach out to companies you’re interested in working for directly to inquire about career opportunities and current openings, in addition to posting your resume on the MSEP Career board and sites like Monster, HotJobs, CareerBuilder

and Craigslist, or http://www.usajobs.gov for federal government employment .

Don’t be afraid to work for free. Volunteering and interning are great ways to get your foot in the door and can be a tremendous learning experience.

Help other job seekers. If you hear of a job that isn’t quite right for you, see if it is a fit for anyone else you know and send it to them. Perhaps someday they’ll return the favor.

Make a great impression in an interview. This means arriving on time, appropriately dressed and having thoroughly researched the company and position to which you are applying.

Keep a polished and up to date resume on hand

at all times.

Have a well-rehearsed elevator speech (short summary of your skills, experience and goals) in the front of your mind should you meet someone unexpectedly.

Stay up to date on trends and industry happenings and do whatever you can to acquire new skills companies are starting to look for in potential hires.

Join a support group. The Department of

Labor support group website, http://www.

servicelocator.org was developed to assist job seekers with locating employment assistance, career resources, workforce information, professional networks, and business contacts. Additionally, information and resources specifically designed for military spouses on employment, education, training, and relocation may be found within this website, or contact the Employment Readiness Program at 305.437.2639 or email [email protected] to set up a one-on-one appointment to learn more about joining a support group.

The Zip Code Groups at USSOUTHCOM are organized by place of residence and offer an opportunity to meet new friends. The groups also provide a channel for spouses to get information about what happens at the command and in the surrounding civilian communities. The Zip Code Groups are a means of social interaction and camaraderie for spouses similar to that provided by the Officers and Enlisted Spouses Groups located on traditional military bases. The Zip Code Groups are organized in Broward and Miami-Dade Counties. ACS DIRECTOR’S CORNER

WHO’S WHO IN MWR

Military OneSource provides some great tips to get organized for a PCS move in their article titled “10 Tips for Getting Organized Ahead of a

Move,” online at http://www.militaryonesource.mil/.

Packing and moving can be especially stressful. A little advance planning will go a long way to help relieve the stress and help make your move as smooth as possible. Follow these tips to get organized:

• Arrange for child care. Packing and moving can upset children and it may be difficult to give them the attention they need when you’re trying to move. • Take pets to a friend’s home or a kennel. They may also need more attention than you will be able to give on moving day. • Be sure at least one person is at home at all times. At least one adult should be available to supervise the movers and check inventory sheets. • Watch the packers and movers carefully. Make sure they understand exactly what items are to be packed. Be sure each container or crate is on the inventory and has a tag from the moving company. Have a marker handy to make extra notes on the boxes. • Check to be sure the condition of your possessions is accurately reflected on the moving inventory. • Keep items you don’t want shipped in a labeled closet, at a friend’s home or in a locked car. This will prevent those items from being packed and shipped. This includes your trash. You might also want to keep a box of cleaning supplies with your no-ship items so you can clean your home after the movers leave. • If van lifts are loaded at your doorstep, supervise the packing of them. These vans will be hoisted by cranes, loaded onto a ship and treated roughly. • Have coffee, cold drinks and snacks available for you and for the packers and movers. • Read all documents before signing. Be sure your copy of the moving company’s inventory is legible. Hand-carry these moving documents to your new duty station. • Check each room and closet to be sure everything is packed. You’ll want to do this before the movers leave.
