LINDA & MICHAEL BARRETTLinda and Michael Barrett started out in New York City, but moved to Worcester, Massachusetts because of Mike’s career with the Melville Corporation where he was Director of Human Resources. While raising their three sons in New England, Linda began her career teaching in and administering education programs for disadvantaged adults. After 23 years there, they relocated to Houston, Texas – their introduction to southern living. Th eir move to VL several months ago was a breeze in comparison. “We’d adjusted to the heat and humidity of Houston, so Florida didn’t faze us at all. Everyone in Valencia Lakes is very friendly and welcoming. Knowing how to play mah-jongg didn’t hurt either!” says Linda. “Our two grandchildren, who live nearby, are the icing on our cake.” Mike enjoys golf, fi shing, and poker. “I call VL our day camp for adults. We love it here and know we made the right choice.” Linda is also a published novelist and runs occasional workshops for VL residents in “Writing Family Stories.”

CLUB SPOTLIGHT

TRAVEL CLUB HEADS TO THE TRACK By Arlene Donnelon

On April 13, a bus packed with 55 members of the Valencia Lakes Travel Club sprang out of the

gate and raced north on a clear track to Tampa Bay Downs, the only thoroughbred racetrack on

Florida’s West Coast. Th ere, the group separated, some going to the grandstand and others going to

one of three restaurants overlooking the racing oval. Th e entire afternoon was fi lled with good food,

invigorating drink, the exhilaration of the race, laughter, and camaraderie. Everyone noisily cheered

on their chosen favorites, leaping and squealing with delight at each win and groaning at each loss.

After the 11th race all reassembled for their return home, agreeing that whether they’d won, lost

or broken even, the outing was unique, exciting and thoroughly pleasurable. Everyone agreed they

would look forward to returning to Tampa Bay Downs next year.

PING PONG TOURNAMENTFlaunting absolutely amazing athleticism, the truly awe-inspiring geezers defeated an

admirably scrappy team of staff ers 4-1 in the fi rst International Valencia Lakes Ping-Pong

Tournament May 18. More than 25 ferocious fans showed up to laugh, clap, and stomp their

feet as the score regularly see-sawed and crowd-pleasing hard slams sailed errantly beyond

the table top.

Th e resident team was comprised of Doug Campbell, Herman Corckrell,

Pete Sachmann, Alan Deamer, and Byron Freso; Austin Copeland, Kyle

Harter, Cassandra Leopold, Brittany Wood, and Steve Saltzberg were the

staff opponents.

Donut holes on Popsicle sticks looking like Ping-Pong paddles, delicious

cookies, and muffi ns were supplied by Vincent Genovese and Marsha

Sellars; soft drinks were donated by the LifeStyle offi ce.

At last count, the Ping-Pong Club has more than 50 members. All residents

are encouraged to sign up and join the fun.

VL WEST WOMEN’S CLUB FASHION SHOWBy Patty Hibsher

fashion show fundraiser ever. All proceeds from this event are earmarked for next

year’s scholarship awards. Th anks to all of you who organized and attended this

delightful and successful activity.

VL WOMEN’S CLUB SCHOLARSHIP PRESENTATION By Patty Hibsher & Addie Unterlack

Hillsborough County, awarded the scholarships to the honored students.

Th is year’s worthy recipients are Julian Couture (Duke University); Andrew
