I don’t assume I’m letting any rabbinic shop-talk out of thebag by comparing the normal sunny vacation lull of mostAmerican shuls with Shirat Hayam’s overflowing cornucopiaof summer programs. From socially entertaining Game Day(Mah Jongg, Canasta, etc.) amid the first days of June, upuntil Cantor Wolbransky’s gala installation in the secondweek of September, almost every day offers a special event tosatisfy your every Jewish taste and concern; right here, during our own shul’s “seashore season.” So be sure to pickup the colorful rectangular card entitled SUMMER on theliterature ledge in Shirat Hayam’s lobby directly in front ofKaren’s office window. (One Jewishly significant event, notincluded in this listing, was the “Meet and Greet” receptionre-introducing the Atlantic City Holocaust Memorial to thegeneral public. Our congregation was cordially invited onWednesday, June 26, 6 pm in the Hamer Event Room atStockton University’s new AC Campus.)

Again, let me remind you about the don’t-miss opportunityto hear and dialogue with Rabbi David Saperstein, this year’sKulp Scholar-In-Residence. (Save the date, July 12-13.)Please be assured that his justifiable public reputation as acaptivating, dynamic teacher – named “America’s mostinfluential rabbi” – has no bearing whatsoever on his privatereligious status as a Reform instead of Conservative Jew. Itwould be hardly surprising if, during the usual wide-rangingQ & A following his address, Rabbi Saperstein was asked tocomment about current Israeli headlines. I make thisconfident prediction dressed in my favorite Shuk – purchased‘Jerusalem’ tee shirt, since today is “Yom Yerushalayim”marking the Six-Day War’s momentous victory in 1967which restored Jewish sovereignty over this historical capitolof the collective Jewish soul for the first time in 2000 years.

That monumental victoriousbattle obviously brings to mind oursynagogue’s monthly “Israelmatters” discussion group meetingin various congregant homes.Doubtless, a prime topic will beIsrael’s second round of 2019national elections, an unprecedentedevent necessitated by P.M.Netanyahu’s inability to form aruling coalition of 61 members in the 120 seat Knesset(Parliament). This political dilemma dramatically illustratestheir fateful internal debate concerning the “Jewish” versus“democratic” character of Israel.

On a closing personal note, I have just finished editing thisbulletin message on June 6, the 75th anniversary of D-Day’sNormandy invasion. Its incredible goal was nothing less thansaving Western Civilization. Likewise, this year’s same datefalls into the shadow of our Shavuot festival commemoratingthe salvation of humanity itself. For me, these two peakanniversaries are both embodied in the remarkable personageof Leonard Sandel (of blessed memory). Lenny was a trueicon of the “Greatest Generation” as a multi-decoratedAmerican officer during WWII as well as Mayor of RockvilleCentre, L.I., my very first rabbinic posting. He was also thepatient guide and mentor of myself – as a new young andidealistic novice who had taken the path less traveled: frompsychiatry to the rabbinate – which, in this my quite probablefinal year in the full-time pulpit, has made all the difference.

Faithfully Yours,

Rabbi Gordon Geller

Rabbi’s RuminationsHouse Rules

Snowbirds. Summerfolk. Relatives. Friends.Friends of relatives. Grandkids. Friends ofgrandkids. Another summer in paradise!

Welcoming guests/visitors is an ancientJewish tradition; our biblical patriarchAbraham greeted three apparent travelers to histent in the wilderness. When you get the callasking about a weekend, or a week, try to say“Yes!” even if it’s a qualified “yes.” You may(and should) set limits for the visit, spell out your house rulesand details — towels, parking, meals, beach tags, etc. Plan aday off or away for longer visits. Stock up on sunscreen anddo what you need to do to make the summer as good as it canbe for you and your guests.

It’s busy season for Shirat Hayam, too. While mostsynagogues are on relaxed mode this time of year, we’re justwarming up for a full summer! New leadership is testing thewater or, more accurately, just jumping right in! Programs, events, entertainment, Galeem (religious school) reunion, game days, speakers, and more.

And, of course, we have to include summer services.

Summer services are not very different from therest of the year, though we’re more likely to seeshorts and flip-flops in shul during July than duringJanuary. Not very different, yet it has felt to methat the mood is more relaxed than over the winter.More people attend and participate, and that leadsto greater ruach (spirit) that enhances our prayerexperience.

We are welcoming back our snowbirds andwe’re greeting people who may be new to the

shore or simply hadn’t yet checked us out. We love being“warm and welcoming” and are always happy to see freshfaces.

Help others come to appreciate the value of our Jewishcommunity. When you run across someone new to the shore, someone looking for community, someone who loves to playmah jongg, someone seeking solace in a minyan, someonewho enjoys chanting haftara (could happen), someoneinterested in Jewish doing or learning, don’t just tell themabout Shirat Hayam, BRING THEM!

Garden UpdateThe spring of 2019 marks the 4th year

for the Shirat Hayam community garden. We have already donated 20 lbs. ofproduce to the Community Food Bank ofNJ from our spring harvest. Early in thespring, we harvested kale and turnips, which were planted last fall andsuccessfully survived the winter. Thisspring, we also harvested a bumper cropof radishes. Carrots and beets will beharvested shortly, and tomato, pepper, andcucumber plants are in the ground.

Many thanks to my volunteers: The“oldies” Bruce Kamis, Elliott Kraus,Phil Hollander, and Rhonda Aronovitz, and the “newbies” Joe Singer, RichPachler, Jay Weinberg, and CarenKarp. Please get in touch with me if youwould like to volunteer.

Once again, we appreciate the donationfrom Bob’s Garden Center of tomato, pepper, and cucumber plants for thegarden. Check out their progresswhenever you come by the synagogue.

The TorahCommands us tobuild relationshipswith people withinthe JewishCommunity as wellas those outside theJewish Community. This year, alongwith your otherclergy, I have triedto do just that. I participated in manyinterfaith events throughout the year andhave visited many other institutions andmade our presence known. I attendedprograms in recognition of tragedies thathad occurred over the past year. I visitedchurches, mosques, and other houses ofworship.

There have been numerous services, events, simchas, programs, classes, andother accomplishments over the past 12months. Shabbat Services continue toinspire those who attend. Attendance atKabbalat Shabbat services continues togrow week after week. We had two BatMitzvahs over the past year, and bothHillary and Brynne were exceptional. Astheir teacher, both made me proud. Lastsummer, our Devotion by the Ocean Fridayevening services were highly successful.High Holiday services in the fall were onceagain inspiring and meaningful. My adultBat Mitzvah class, which began last fall, will continue this June as our snowbirdsreturn from Florida.

It is only through the many dedicatedmembers of Shirat Hayam who devote theirtime, energy, and financial support, that wecontinue to be successful and grow. It is withthis dedication and thanks that I have seenanother year of growth, service, and joy.

As another year ends, I pray that hazakhazak v’nihazek; may we all continue togrow stronger and stronger through ourunderstanding of Torah, love for ourcommunity, and the acceptance of diversitywithin the greater community.

Message from our Outgoing President

As I come to the end of my tenure as president of ShiratHayam, I look back with pride at all that our leadership, thecommittee chairs and members, our volunteers, office staff, and maintenance personnel have accomplished. We’vecontinued to build on the vitality of the newly formed ShiratHayam, making strides in merging the congregations into onefamily, putting our finances on a firm footing, reversing thedecline in religious school enrollment, reversing the decline inthe condition of our building, improving our energy efficiencyand our operational efficiency, and the list goes on. We’vemade three wonderful additions to our staff. Bob Barrett, ournew bookkeeper has brought order to our accounting; RobertYoung in maintenance has been steadily making up for yearsof deferred repairs; and Andrea Poetsch, our new religiousschool director, whose reputation alone increased ourenrollment from seven returning students to 19 on the openingday. We closed the year with more than 25 students andtypically 80-90 percent attendance. Nothing is more critical tothe life of a synagogue than its spiritual base. Two years ago,Cantor Wolbransky joined our clergy, leading us in prayerwith ruach and joy that fills the shul and all of us. We are alllooking forward to his installation this September.

While I was honored with the title of president, the realwork was done by our committee chairs and members, thevolunteers, the clergy, and the staff. It has been humbling tosee the dedication, the hours, and often hard physical laborthat people give to the congregation, to all of us that careabout Shirat Hayam. The viability of our congregation restsjust as surely on their efforts as anything else.

Certainly we have had our challenges, and there is stillwork to be done. Perhaps our biggest challenge is thenumber of volunteers. Our volunteer corps is stretchedmighty thin, with most people having more than oneleadership role and volunteering in multiple other functionsand events. I worry that people will eventually burn out, andwe may lose the gains that we have made. There are thingsthat are not accomplished for lack of manpower; things thatshould be done. I have appealed to our congregation to comeand get involved, whether on a committee or for a singleevent. I cannot make that appeal strongly enough. There arealso things that I wasn’t able to accomplish. Chief amongthese was engagement of the young families that have joinedrecently. However, we are now beginning to make progresson this front, as well.

By the time you read this, we will have elected a newpresident, officers, and trustees. I am excited about the slateand look forward to great things in the coming years. Pleasecome out to help our new leadership and to show themsupport. Please come out to learn about our committees andmajor events and see if you would like to become involvedin the vitality of Shirat Hayam. I look forward to seeing youin the future.

Life & Legacy TestimonialFrom Ethel F Levinson

Those of you who know me, know Judaism is veryimportant to me, as is our future. Arnie and I raised ourchildren in an atmosphere of observance and its importance. We have always been involved in our congregation and inthe larger Jewish community. I have taught some of yourchildren in Kulanu (formerly Hebrew High). This is why thesuccess of LIFE & LEGACY is so very important to us. Wefeel very strongly that our legacy gift will be important inmaintaining the quality of Jewish life, one in which wewould like to see our grandchildren, and yours, involved. The beauty of LIFE & LEGACY is that it is an after lifetimegift, and everyone can participate, because our legacy giftsmatter whatever our means while living. We are not askingfor money now; your legacy gift comes after your lifetimeand only if there are funds remaining to fulfill it. It is animportant and necessary commitment. LIFE & LEGACY isfor everyone who lives Jewishly, and who wants to ensurefuture generations will – and can do likewise. If you have notyet completed a Declaration of Intent, please contact me. Ihave blanks in my office at Shirat Hayam. It is very simpleand straightforward, but I am more than willing to explain itto you, so that you can join Arnie and me to make yourcommitment to the future of Judaism and Shirat Hayam.

Thank you Cantor Wolbransky!!As many of you are aware, we are inducting and honoring

Cantor Harvey Wolbransky at a dinner-dance on Sundayevening, September 15, 2019. As part of the celebration andto thank him for his service to Shirat Hayam and thecommunity, we are preparing a special tribute book in hishonor. For as little as $36, you can be part of those sendingtheir best wishes.

We hope you will join in the celebration by attending thedinner. Please consider adding your name or purchasing afull-page, half-page, or quarter-page message to show yourappreciation for Cantor Wolbransky.

HAPPENINGS IN THE KITCHEN

Men are cooking – really – Joe Wolnerman, MitchGordon, and Steve Melnick. They all helped pull offthe Lag B’Omer BBQ with great success, along with thehelp of Eileen Daniels, Barbara Wolnerman, and LoisShohen-Brown. I would be remiss without profuselythanking Elaine Geller who put the menu together andorganized all the prep and cooking.

We’ve made it through Pesach, Lag B’Omer, andShavuot in addition to our normal once a monthpreparation of Kiddush lunch. We extend an invitation toall to come join us in the kitchen the third Friday ofevery month to prepare for Kiddush lunch. We are therefrom 9:30 am until noon. All volunteers are welcome!

Alice Melnick & Elaine GellerCatering Committee

www.shirathayamnj.orgI am happy to report that our synagogue’s website is

up and running once again. We owe a great deal ofappreciation to Logan Levenson and his team atArgyleInteractive for volunteering many hours to designand input the content at shirathayamnj.org.

This was a month-long process spearheaded by theMarketing Committee. The goal of a congregationwebsite is to provide “synagogue seekers” a feeling ofwho we are, what we offer, and what our priorities are.It can help them decide if we are a match with theirdesire to get involved with Jewish life in ourcommunity. Just as important, the website informs ourcongregants of upcoming events, programs, andongoing opportunities at Shirat Hayam to learn andgrow Jewishly. (Check out dates on the Calendar page).

Please be aware that the website will continue todevelop. In the near future, we will add brief histories ofBeth Judah and Emeth Shalom, as well as links to paybills and make donations. We also plan to add additionalcontent. The marketing committee welcomes your inputand thoughts in having a website that truly reflects whowe are.

Again, many thanks to Logan Levenson fromArgyleInteractive and to Bruce Kamis for theirinvolvement on behalf of the marketing committee.
