The Italian Made Social Club in Sydney is organising a

mini Auto Italia (“Auto Festa”) as a part of the “Italian

Festa on Norton Street” event in Leichardt, “Little Italy”

just south west of the CBD, Sunday 27 October.

Whatif Classics at the Cotter: late October: an “almost a

Pebble Beach-type event” for which fifty “best of the

Well July is one of our coldest months and it is not unusual for us Canberrans to hibernate. This July

is no exception, with only a very few attending our monthly breakfast at Chaps in Manuka. Little other

activity has occurred at this time of writing.

However a "Christmas in July" has been arranged for the end of the month and I believe it promises to

be a good roll up, this is to be combined with a drive thru the country from Hall thru to

Collector/Goulburn [Ed – report below].

Our Calender appears to be filling up during the warmer months and I urge members to try and

become involved in some of these events.

On behalf of all members I would like to pass on our best wishes to Paddy Martin who has just

endured a successful knee operation.

In our new series of “meet the advertisers” we have an introduction to Marko Body Repairs this time

round.

Heard at the committee table – Police Crash Investigation

John Madelly had been suggesting for some time that we get a visit from the police crash investigation

team – skid marks, dents, deconstructing who did what when, ultimately leading to who was at fault.

John’s suggestion had received warm support, to the point that it has a placeholder in the calendar

while we sort the details. Unfortunately, John’s interest in the subject might have been prophetic.

At the committee meeting, John relayed a tale of recent woe. He came home to minor chaos: a visitor

(young, high heels) in a Mini (Cooper, modern) had misjudged a three point turn into their driveway;

the car had “got away” and smacked into Madelly’s Mitsubishi Express parked in their driveway. The

mini must have truly bolted because the not inconsiderable mass of the Mitsubishi Express was

shoved more than a metre forwards, its inertia pushing a big dent into the closed roller door of the

garage. On the other side of the roller door, the forward momentum was taken by John’s parked 124,

which – in turn and despite its handbrake – was pushed forward, jamming the garage stool at front of

the car into the workbench.

So, not only have both ends of both the Express and the 124 been damaged, it was going to be three

weeks before the roller door can be fixed so that John can do anything about the wedged 124! And

while that happens he’s got nowhere to sit. He seemed to be very calm about it all, apparently the

Mini was well insured. John is still progressing the crash investigation night; will we see his particular

case study deconstructed?

Meet Our Advertisers – Marko Body Repairs

Marko Body Repairers have been long-time supporters of the club through advertising in the

magazine. Marko operate out of Mitchell and produce top class results, from simple dent fixes through

to whole of car restorations. Marko’s black and white ad doesn’t describe all they do. Over and above

the usual smash and insurance work, they also do:

Private repairs & Duco for car accidents where the client doesn’t have insurance.

Custom repairs & Duco for modifications on unique cars, where clients want something different for their car. Where parts are not available, Marko can in some cases reconstruct panels etc.

Suspension repairs, specialising in accident suspension damage. They can do all of the components and alignments of other suspension stores, and as well align realign rails & braces.

Paddy Martin (the one and only) had Marko do a complete re-spray of his Fiat 1100/103(Indian Taxi) some ten years ago. “Work was excellent and cost was very competitive”

Feedback from members also indicates that the panel construction part of the business might not

necessarily be available any more (Marko Senior is semi-retired), so it will be best to check with Marko

about your individual requirements.

Annual General meeting

Wednesday 18th September

In accordance with the Constitution of the FIAT Club of the A.C.T. Incorporated, notice is given that

the 2013 Annual General Meeting will be conducted on Wednesday 18 September, at 7.30pm.

The venue will be the Italian Australian Club, Forrest.

Principal business of the AGM will be the election of the Committee and officers of the Club for the

coming 12 months.

Members wishing to dine together beforehand should meet in the Dining Room at 6.00pm.

For those not already a member of the Italian Australian Club, a list for signing in as guests will be

available at the front desk.

Auto Italia 2104 Planning

Auto Italia 2014 has been booked in for Sunday 30th

March 2014.

So far, the featured marque is Maserati. I will rely on you, avid readers and members of others clubs

to see if you have a celebratory model in your club and get back to me when you have chosen one.

The web site will gradually be updated, when we get webmaster handover complete and will be

continually updated to keep you ALL informed about what is going on especially closer to the day.

The AGM for The Italian Cars Association Inc., which runs Auto Italia, will be on Wednesday

October 2013 at 6pm at the Italo Australian Club in Forrest. This year the Fiat Club of the ACT

has to provide a Vice President, Treasurer and a Committee Person. If you think you can handle one

of these roles come along on the 9th October. Besides the executive committee, there are other

positions/responsibilities eg looking after the signs, organizing the concessionaires, booking the loos,

Saturday night dinner etc etc. Is anybody out there up to the challenge in helping organize, what is

already an excellent event? Auto Italia is gaining a reputation for excellence, so come along and be a

part of a great team.

The next Meeting for Auto Italia is on Wednesday 14th August at the Italo Australia Club in Forrest at

6pm sharp. We have the board room booked from 6pm until 7.30pm.

CACTMC Report July 2013

The main topics discussed at this month’s GM were Wheels 2014, the National Trust Canberra Rally,

and CRS registration. It was also announced that Marques in the Parks would go ahead this year.

Wheels 2014, March? 2014

The MB Club’s delegate (and organizing committee member) Richard Jackson advised that he had

talked to the NCA about securing the East/West Lawns only to learn March was booked out and the

earliest available date was 5 April, which he reserved. However, he had found an attractive alternative:

Kings Park, which could handle 1100 to 1200 cars, was well drained, had toilets and power and

enough parking nearby and would not be affected by very wet weather. After brief discussion the

meeting endorsed the MBC’s actions.

Centenary Rally, October

HMS Albatross is confirmed as the starting point; although it is expected perhaps ten cars will start

from Jervis Bay; The convoy will end at Bungendore at lunchtime (note however that the NT Rally

website states the procession will continue after lunch via Fyshwick to Canberra) and re-assemble on

Sunday morning at EPIC (which has been hired for Saturday to accommodate interstate campers);

there will be a dinner on Saturday night in the Budawang Building; after Rally passports are stamped

at EPIC cars will proceed to OPH lawns for the rest of the day. Volunteers are needed, first to help

assemble the showbags and second to be posted on Saturday at various points along the route,

probably in groups of three or four -- preferably from the same club. Clubs can supply names and

email addresses to Nick Arnott (American Car Club), who will pass them on to the NT’s Rally

coordinator.

We have about 5 participants ready to go and invite others to join in this major event contributing to Canberra’s centennial celebrations.

Saturday 19 October sees the big rally from Jervis Bay through Tarago, Bungendore and Queanbeyan to EPIC. Participants can join at those waypoints if they don’t want to run all of the way to the coast. Sunday 20 October has a series of cruises, entertainment, costume competitions, concours d’élégance at OPH and other events.

Cost for entry is $125 before 30 August for participation in all events plus the gala dinner at Epic on Sunday night. $25 late fee after that. No discounts for shorter drives.

CRS Registration

The REGISTRAR, Mark Saunders, advised that so far some 29 clubs (about half the membership)

had renewed their affiliation. Some of these had not filled in the second and third pages of the form

which sought car details. He would be contacting them seeking full renewal by the 30/8 deadline

(strictly speaking it is 31/7, after which if CRS fees are not paid to the Club and the Club hasn’t paid its

affiliation fees, club members’ CRS rego renewal can be refused). He warned that after the AGM in

September delinquent clubs would be” named and shamed”. Mark also reported that he had sought

talks with the Government on several matters, including SIVS (“What are our options?”), the officials’

reluctance to recognize certain (obscure) makes of cars for CRS purposes, and technical problems

(although only a few cars have had difficulty meeting CRS requirements).

The American Car Club had agreed to run it, on 10/11/13, again in John Knight Park. No other details.

Planning for Nationals 2014

The planning committee for the Fiat Nationals in 2014 is making steady progress. Snippets from the

minutes possibly of interest to ACT readers include:

Paul Hickerton [ Ed: VP in exile ] and Dennis Torrealba are representing the ACT club in the Queensland meetings.

The organisers are keen to arrange the classes so as to encourage newer cars to be entered, with an acknowledgement that there are progressively fewer competitive examples of the older cars.

Anyone with photos, videos or other memorabilia from previous events is encouraged to make it available for a developing history of the event, contact [email protected] if you have anything you’d like to contribute.

Nationals Road Trip - Boombox Blues

My small Fiat 128 Sport L coupe was produced as a basic car. It didn’t come with a radio, and I hadn’t

bothered installing one. But, I like music and I like radio so I used an old Sony boombox on the

passenger’s seat to pump it out. This thing was large enough to produce plenty of sound, necessary

given the 128’s lack of sound insulation – “all the better to hear the music of the motor”. It played

tapes, had a radio and had stood up well to decades of hot car interior. With a cassette adapter I

could even play music from an iPod. Not cool, but very functional. And, with 6 rechargeable D cell

batteries, it would go for two weeks between recharges.

Well, nothing lasts for ever and the system started going all single channel on me on the way up to the

Nationals in Ipswich this last January, such that I was missing half of the details in the music (my

Eternally Patient and Mostly Understanding other half might observe that some of the music I listen to

doesn’t have much detail to start with …) The level of satisfaction was like sucking camembert

through a Chux, not good enough with entire days’ worth of driving still to go. So, I decided it was time

to update the 128’s sound system to something modern. Preferably, something that could reuse my

substantial investment in rechargeable D cell batteries – those things are expensive, and I had six of

them.

The old sound system – note clever use of stress cow to orientate the speakers towards the driver’s left ear.

It so happened that half way to Ipswich, John’s Fairlane towing Pyro on a car trailer wasn’t coping with

the hot day and steep hills, and needed radiator attention. I followed as they turned into Armidale to

get it seen to. With the Fairlane ensconced at a radiator shop, John, Tim and I climbed into the 128

(Tim nobly took the small back seat) to find somewhere cool and dark to get out of the heat, get some

lunch and get me a new boombox. Starting with the boombox, we quickly found the cool, air-

conditioned interior of the Armadale Dick Smith store. Lucky for me they had an entire shelf of

boomboxes, and were keen to sell. None using D cells, unfortunately. I settled for a very capable

black unit with lots of apparent gizmos and a squat form factor that suited its place on the passenger’s

seat of the car. Unfortunately Dick Smith doesn’t do lunch so we ventured outside to the best shade

we could find - a café under a tree, me with my boombox in its carton.

After lunch it was back to the radiator shop so I could charge up the new boombox for several hours

and get that music going for the rest of the trip. A scarcity of shade in the industrial setting saw the

128 parked in the hot sun again. The radiator shop guys were happy to offer a 240V outlet in their

electronics workshop; the place was an Aladdin’s cave of miscellaneous electrical parts and bore a

strong resemblance to the man-caves of some of our members.

The new black boombox sat on a sunny shelf and recharged while the radiator work progressed,

giving me the chance to acquaint myself with the 20-page instruction book describing all of the cool

features. Some of these were not quite so cool in the fine print, such as the admonition to “not use the

unit in a hot environment such as a car”, something to do with the lithium ion battery in the boombox

suffering thermal runaway and taking out the boombox in a ball of flame. That would be officially

uncool if it happened with the boombox sitting on the passenger’s seat (made of dark vinyl, in a dark

coloured car, in full sun …)

We still had time to kill for the radiator repair to John’s car and so I got on with on with the boombox

instructions – particularly the configuration settings for the wireless networking one-time peer to peer

session (it was all in the instructions – cool!) and five other ways to get music to the device. The

boombox featured sexy new soft switches, in that you just touch the switch area and it does its thing –

there is no button as such that actually moves, way more cool than the clunky switches of the old

Sony boombox.

The radiator work on John’s Fairlane was eventually finished and I unplugged the recharged

boombox, now warmed through by its location on the sunny shelf, and took it out to the 128 solar

furnace outside. Sitting in its rightful place on the passenger’s seat, the black boombox started adding

value by absorbing even more heat from the baked car interior, making its surroundings just a little

cooler by just being there.

As John and Tim departed for the highway north to Ipswich, I settled into the 128 and pressed the

appropriate soft switch area on the boombox to turn it on and get that peer to peer WIFI network music

thing going. Quick as a flash, nothing happened. I looked closely for the grey on black writing (grr)

indicating the switch area and pressed again, pressed harder, pressed elsewhere, swiped left, swiped

right, swore. It just sat there inert, unresponsive, ignoring its ever-less-cool owner. After a minute of

futile poking in the switch area I re-examined the attractions of the unit: Soft switches? Hopeless.

WIFI? Non-existent. Unit?? Dead. The device’s dwindling aura of cool evaporated out the driver’s

window into the afternoon heat, leaving an artfully crafted box of hot black plastic that didn’t play

music.

John and Tim had disappeared up the hill and were on the way north. For me it was back to the very

air-conditioned Dick Smith store in the centre of town to get another replacement boombox, where I

paused to let the cool soak in a bit. The staff were understanding especially when I pointed out the

warning against using it in cars, part of my description of need earlier in the day. This was as

unexpected to them as it was to me. They were happy to exchange it for a different one and so I

plumped for a simple looking pale metal-clad unit with an old school moving power switch. This silver

unit was more in the long form factor of the original Sony boombox but it didn’t have lots of features,

less than I wanted, and its main way of getting music in was via that other modern wireless network

magic of Bluetooth. I didn’t trust in-car Bluetooth (bad experiences with a Bluetooth phone handsfree

unit), but the helpful girl in the shop showed me where the Bluetooth settings were on the iPod and it

looked fairly straightforward. And, yes, I’d need to recharge it from a power point for six hours, so I

wasn’t going to be able to actually use it until I got to Ipswich. Grrr. With the highway gap to the

rejuvenated Fairlane getting longer as the minutes passed, I had no option but to take it all on trust, so

I sealed the deal and headed out back in to the heat and north to Ipswich without music. I caught up

to the Fairlane in about an hour, and we got to the event motel in Ipswich near on midnight. I had the

good sense to plug the new boombox in to recharge before heading off to sample the delights of

Paddy’s beer bar outside his room.

Early next morning I stepped out into the quiet of the Ipswich motel car park with the boombox in its

carton, wary of a repeat of the techno-frustration of the previous day. I settled into the driver’s seat

and put the boombox onto the passenger’s seat. Back into the carton for the inevitable instruction

manual, but all I could find was something like a beer coaster, with pictures to the effect of “recharge,

turn on, accept Bluetooth connection” – easier than the last one!

Recharge: tick.

Turn on: pressed up the moving on-off switch (none of that soft switch rubbish), a light came on.

Better than the last one. Next there was a deep chord from the boombox, presumably a boot up

welcome message. Reassuring …

Accept Bluetooth connection, the tricky bit: I set the iPod to playing, then into the iPod’s Bluetooth

settings where there was the boombox device with an “Accept connection?” prompt. Pressed the

Accept option on the iPod. Waiting – waiting – not good …

Then BLAM – a sudden blast of Deep Purple out of the boombox as the Bluetooth connection kicked

in at maximum volume. Holy smoke! Gathering my wits back in from the open driver’s window I

dragged the volume down to something that wouldn’t wake the neighbours. At last - modern

technology that not only works, it kicks arse! With the Deep Purple at a muted thump I took the iPod

off to the limits of the car park but the Bluetooth connection didn’t waver. Now that’s real cool.

With nightly recharges the new boombox performed flawlessly for the rest of the trip, and had much

better fidelity than the old Sony boombox to boot.

When I got back home from the Nationals I demonstrated the new toy to my Eternally Patient and

Mostly Understanding other half, who noticed that the new unit would do an absolutely splendid job of

pumping out Verdi from her iPod in the riding arena while she trains the horses. Oh well, I’ll just have

to go and buy another boombox. At least I know what I’m looking for now, and maybe I’ll sneak a

Deep Purple track or two into her playlist as a reminder …

Oh and the original Sony boombox is still in the car – it will probably last as long as the mono AM radio

service it still delivers.

124 and Parts for Sale

I have a 124AC that reluctantly need to sell, I’ve run out of room. How would I go about advertising it through your club? Full bare metal restoration 2008, no rust, bushes done, engine and gearbox rebuilt, diff rebuilt, brake calipers rebuilt, twin 40mm dellortos, and new gear in the wiper motor. What it still needs, the seats recovered, and the radiator cleaned.

Loads of spares including a set of cromodora wheels, gearboxes, engines, wiper and starter motors, suspension arms, brake parts, chrome and some interior parts. Basically I pulled three other rusty cars to bits to build this car and still have most of the usable bits from them.

The price is $9000 negotiable.

Fiat 850 Spyder

I have been importing American cars for many years and on a recent trip to US, I came across a tidy 1973 Fiat 850 Spyder (Roadster).

It is a good solid California car, with a new top. It starts and runs well, has an average paint job but could be used as it is. It has just arrived in Sydney and I would like to sell it, and thought I would start with Fiat Clubs before advertising it.

My price is around $8950, I have all correct documentation for rego L/H Drive anywhere in Australia after meeting roadworthy requirements.
