Trees spring to mind when most people think about shade gardens, butthe often neglected north side of a home should not be forgotten. Inany shady zone, you can create plots for conifers, shrubs, perennials, orshade-loving annuals, meaning they can live with about two hours ofsunshine per day.

The denser leaves of trees such as maples and limes create a deepershade than birches, and the lower the branches are, the denser the shadewill be. To cultivate a wider range of plants, prune back low branches toa minimum height of 1.5 metres.

When creating flower beds under older trees, which often have largeroots near the surface, raised beds are best. Be sure to raise them at least20 centimetres from the ground and choose plant species which do notdevelop deep roots. Try to be creative and avoid making a small, sym-metrical flower bed circling the base of the tree. The result is not alwaysaesthetically pleasing, especially if filled with a gaudy mix of annuals. Abetter idea is to create a good-sized flower bed with curving lines thatwill also facilitate grass cutting.

If you love a harmonious but striking visual effect in your garden, plantlarge areas with just one plant species: a green groundcover, such aspachysandra, will create a stunningly elegant effect while a floweringplant, such as lily of the valley, will produce beautiful fragrances in thespring. If you prefer more contrast and colour, then yellow, orange, pink,and white annuals are just the thing. The number of colours should,however, be limited to two or three, and the plants should be positionedin concentric lines.

Proper planting techniques ensure the health of your plants.

Planting flowers is as simple as digging a hole, positioning the plant, and fillingthe hole with soil, right? Unfortunately it’s not that simple, at least not if you wantyour flowers to thrive. Here are a few tips for successful planting.

The right time to plant depends on the type of flowers chosen. Spring-floweringperennials (perennials are plants which live several years and flower on a regularbasis) should be planted at the end of the summer. Summer-flowering plantsshould be planted in the spring. Annuals, which are flowers that only live for onesummer, should be planted as soon as all risk of frost is over.

It is preferable to plant at the end of the afternoon or on a cloudy day so that yourplants are exposed to as little heat as possible. If you cannot put them in theground on the same day as you purchase them, they should be stored in a shadyarea, sheltered from the wind.

Should freshly planted flowers be watered with a fertilizer so they will grow morequickly? Definitely not! New plants must be allowed to start a root system beforethey are fertilized. They have to be able to find their first nutritional elements inthe soil in order to develop properly. Once that has happened, apply a liquid fer-tilizer, such as 15-30-15, once every 15 days. Never apply fertilizer to dry soil.Take the time to water it beforehand so that the fertilizer doesn’t burn your plants.

Hostas are vigorous plants which, once planted,can live for thirty years or more. Contrary toother perennials, which are usually appreciatedfor the beauty of their flowers, hostas are notedfor the richness of their foliage. Their distinctiveleaves are green, variegated, golden, or they mighteven have a touch of blue, bringing vividness andtexture to flower beds and borders.

Hostas are perfect plants for the inexperiencedgardener. They are easy to grow and thrive equal-ly well in shade or sun. They are best suited tosoils rich in compost, so no other fertilizer isnecessary. That is a great advantage, especiallyfor new gardeners! Another undeniable advan-tage: because of their pro-fuse, tightly packed foliage,hostas will never be invadedby weeds, saving hours ofbackbreaking work. Eventhough hostas are droughttolerant, it is preferable tospread mulch around them.This conserves the moist

coolness of the soil, which these oriental plantslove so much.

The main enemy of hostas are slugs, who alsolove cool, moist places. Even though garden cen-tres do stock effective slug bait, some hosta vari-eties are more resistant to slugs than others,including “invincible” and “Bressingham blue”.Garden centre specialists will be able to adviseyou about the other available varieties.

Hostas can thrive through generations of garden-ers, perpetuating the memory of those who firstplanted them and giving them pride of place intheir garden.

Once you’vemastered growing these simpler varieties, youcan add a few more exotic herbs that can beused for specific recipes.

Luckily, herbs do not require a lot of care.Planting them in a sunny spot and not over-watering them is usually enough to gethealthy plants. Because herbs usually havevery distinct fragrances, they are rarelyattacked by insects. They’re even used in veg-etable plots to repel harmful parasites!

Herbs are also great for growing in containerson a deck. The end result will be as good as ifthey’d been grown directly in the ground.Don’t be afraid to pinch back new shoots in

order to encourage growth and density ofleaves. In most cases this also keeps the plantfrom flowering and going to seed, which willmake it taste bitter.

When the time comes to harvest your crop,don’t mix different herbs in the same basketor else their distinctive fragrances will meld.Try to harvest herbs on a dry day, because wetor moist herbs are inclined to rot or takelonger to dry and conserve.

Many gardeners have no idea why some of their flowering plants neverdo very well, as they come out of the earth looking weak and spindlyall summer long. If you were to discuss this problem with any garden-ing expert, however, they would immediately ask if you’ve checkedyour soil pH.

The letters “pH” stand for “potential hydrogen”. These values are usedto measure the level of soil acidity by using a graduated scale from 1 to14. If the pH is lower than 7, the soil is acid. If, on the other hand, thepH is higher than 7, then the soil is alkaline. Soil is neutral when the pHindicates 7.

This means that, before choosing your annuals and new perennials, youshould have your soil analyzed. It’s useless to insist on growing a plantin an alkaline soil if it requires the complete opposite! This is the mostcommon reason for mediocre gardening results. Any good gardeningcentre will be able to analyze a sample of your soil so you to know whattype you’re dealing with.

Most ornamental plants need a neutral soil in order to flourish. Annualflowers that require an acid soil include begonias, fuchsias, impatience,and marigolds. Yarrow, ageratum, alyssum, babysbreath, and lavateraare a few examples of plants which thrive in alkaline soil. If the pH ofyour soil needs to be increased, which is often the case, it is usually suf-ficient to add lime, a product sold in any garden centre.

Get to know your soil pH

Lilies are beautiful as cut flowers but are spectacular in flower beds as well.

Symbols of royalty for some and of purity for others, lilies originate from manyareas of the world. There are almost a hundred different species to choose from,and are the joy of many a gardener.

Lilies are famous for their spectacular flowers, which come in every shape andsize. The early species flower after the peonies and irises, while others bloomwell into September. The flower of the iris consists of six tepals: three petals andthree sepals, which are identical. These tepals are straight and curve towards theback. Some varieties have double flowers.

Colours are varied, ranging from pure white to the darkest of purples, with allshades of pink, yellow, and orange in between. The flowers appear in groups atthe end of strong stems that feature long, slender leaves.

Lilies develop from bulbs made up of a series of overlapping fleshy scales thatlack the protective covering that tulips have. That is why lilies are vulnerableto dehydration and why the bulbs should be purchased in containers. If buyingbulbs that are not potted, you should select large, firm, undamaged specimenswith short stems. The bulb will not develop into a plant that year if any stemsare broken.

Lilies are suitable for growing in perennial flower beds, either alone or in smallgroupings. These elegant flowers with an intoxicating perfume are long-lastingand easy to cultivate, so it’s not surprising that they have been admired acrosscultures for more than 4,000 years!

Lilies for everyone

Felling large trees is a dangerous business.Ideally, it is a job that should be entrusted to aprofessional tree-trimmer. It might cost you a fewhundred dollars but at least you’ll avoid injuringyourself or damaging nearby buildings or otherstructures. If the tree you need to cut down is onthe small side, you could do the job yourself, aslong as you follow some safety guidelines.

First of all, never fell a tree all by yourself. Ahelper is useful for a job like this, but moreimportantly, he or she can go get help if thingsgo wrong. The next thing to do is decide wherethe tree should fall. The factors to take into con-

sideration include the site, wind direction, andthe shape and position of the tree. Clean the areaaround the foot of the tree, removing any brushthat could get in the way.

If you think that space is too limited for the treeto fall safely, cut off the top in two-metre sectionsbefore making the cut at the base. It is also a goodidea to remove larger branches individually inorder to avoid accidents and the crushing of sur-rounding vegetation, hedges, and fences.

Once the tree has been felled the stump can beremoved by digging around it, cutting any large

roots with an axe or a saw. Youcan usually get rid of a stumpcompletely if the tree isn’t veryold. However, if it’s a maturetree stump you’ll probably haveto rent a manual winch or achain hoist. When attached to afixed point such as another tree,this type of simple mechanicaldevice can create powerful trac-tion with the use of a crank. Beprepared to fill in the remaininghole with gravel or soil.

Felling a tree

Felling a tree requires agreat deal of care and cautionin order to avoid injury.

New gardeners may find that their skills andexperience run short when it comes to land-scaping hilly terrain. Sloping land can bedaunting, and the challenge increases with thedegree of the gradient, its dimensions, andwhether it climbs or falls away from the house.The good news is that these problems can beturned into advantages if you take the time toplan your work well.

A descending slope, which often includes anice view, is easier to landscape thanone that climbs away from a home.Working with the natural slope, youcan create a rockery or an artificialstream with a series of waterfalls. Ifyou want to create a path, make sureit winds its way down the slope ratherthan dropping in a straight line, whichwould only accentuate the differencein elevation.

The landscaping challenge is a bittougher when the slope climbs awayfrom the home. An interesting optionin this case is to think about creatingsecret gardens, threaded with windingpaths and lined with shrubs. If reten-tion walls are necessary, choose good-quality, pleasant-looking materials,such as stone or wood. Alternately,carefully chosen shrubs or other plant-ings can conceal retaining walls.

As best you can, avoid planting regular grasson a slope. When the time comes to cut it, youwill have a hard time with the mower, espe-cially if the slope is very steep. If you reallywant to have a carpet of greenery, opt forthyme, which is a great alternative if the spotreceives enough sun.

Although this type of land is a big challengefor gardeners, with a bit of planning, you willbe very proud of the end result.
