Ministry in Action...

PAGE 3 Décimo Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario PROMISES

Today’s liturgy is full of promises. The reading from Genesis promises a final triumph over the power of sin and a return to a new creation. The reading from Second Corinthians promises that all who follow Christ will have to struggle. It also promises, however, that we can perse-vere if we but recognize that Christ is within us, renewing us daily, and giving us the courage and the strength we need to endure. The Gospel promises that doing God’s will makes us “family” with Jesus, who forgives all sin and triumphs over evil. Today might be a good day for us to make some promises as well. We can promise to stop kidding our-selves about our own tendencies to selfishness and sin. We can promise ourselves to believe—really believe—that while we are not sinless, we are forgiven. We can promise ourselves to combat evil and sin by acting as sis-ters and brothers not only to the Lord, but to one another as well.

Question of the Week

First Reading — After Adam and Eve eat of the forbid-den fruit, the LORD God puts enmity between the serpent and the woman (Genesis 3:9-15). Psalm — With the Lord there is mercy, and fullness of redemption (Psalm 130). Second Reading — We have an eternal dwelling from God, not made with hands (2 Corinthians 4:13 — 5:1). Gospel — “Whoever does the will of God is my brother and sister and mother” (Mark 3:20-35). Question for Children: Why do our parents and teachers have rules we need to follow? Why do you think God has rules for us to follow? Question for Adults: We humans are vulnerable to sin. Our sins most often lead to shame, mistrust, and blaming. How can following God’s will free you from these destructive actions?

Monday: Acts 11:21b-26; 13:1-3; Ps 98:1-6; Mt 5:1-12 Tuesday: 1 Kgs 17:7-16; Ps 4:2-5, 7b-8; Mt 5:13-16 Wednesday: 1 Kgs 18:20-39; Ps 16:1b-2ab, 4, 5ab, 8, 11; Mt 5:17-19 Thursday: 1 Kgs 18:41-46; Ps 65:10-13; Mt 5:20-26 Friday: 1 Kgs 19:9a, 11-16; Ps 27:7-9abc, 13-14; Mt 5:27-32 Saturday: 1 Kgs 19:19-21; Ps 16:1b-2a, 5, 7-10; Mt 5:33-37 Sunday: Ez 17:22-24; Ps 92:2-3, 13-16; 2 Cor 5:6-10; Mk 4:26-34

WHITE SPECIAL MASS PRAYER ENVELOPE

The cathedral is a treasure in a diocese and in our tradi-tion. It is not simply a “big church,” as some say; some parish churches are larger. What makes a cathedral is the presence of the chair, called a cathedra (Latin for seat) reserved for the bishop. There are many instances in our country of a local church (diocese) outgrowing a cathedral. In Baltimore and St. Louis, the former cathedrals are historic treasures in the heart of the old city, but new and larger structures now function as the seat of the bishop. When a bishop dies or retires, it is said that “the seat is vacant,” and when the new bishop is installed, the cen-tral ritual is the moment when the decree of the Holy Fa-ther is read and the new bishop is escorted to the cathe-dra. No one but the bishop sits in the cathedra during a ritual, but in Los Angeles the cathedra in the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels is accessible, and no one seems to mind when a visitor tries the cathedra out for the bishop’s point of view.

Safeguard the Children

DID YOU KNOW? Practice fire safety in the home De-veloping a family fire plan for evacuation can save lives. Children should be a part of the planning, and should know which exits to use to get out of the house and where to meet once they are safely outside. Smoke detectors and fire extinguishers should also be part of your plan; chil-dren should know what to do if the smoke detector goes off, and older children should be taught how to use a fire extinguisher. For a copy of the complete VIRTUS® arti-cle “A Reminder about Fire Safety in the Home,” visit http://www.la-archdiocese.org/org/protecting/Pages/VIRTUS-Current-Online-Articles.aspx.

Tenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Jesus longs for us to belong to one family in him, through baptism. Today’s readings look at three blessings pro-vided by membership in God’s family: understanding, permanence, and hospitality. In Genesis, Adam and Eve, filled with shame, hide from God. God finds them, of course, and sees deep into their hearts. Before God dis-cusses their disobedience, God shows understanding and tenderness by banishing the creature most responsible for their sin: the serpent. God always understands and pro-tects the members of God’s family. This protection does not prevent suffering on earth, but, as Saint Paul explains to the Corinthians, guarantees our permanent, glorious happiness in heaven. Today’s Gospel reminds us that God wants to welcome all of us into that glory. Breaking all barriers, Jesus assures us he heartily welcomes all who love and follow him. God’s family welcomes, under-stands, and offers eternal life.
