Senior Transition Day a Success Once Again On May 22, the Senior class participated in the Seventh Annual Senior Transition Day, a day devoted to planning and preparing seniors for the upcoming transition into the world of work. Students rotate through a variety of seminars from presenters in the community. The topics ranged from Basic Auto Care and Money Talk: “What can I do Today?” to The Real College “Experience” and Healthy Relationships 101. After spending time in the morning sessions, the seniors attended a panel discussion with WCHS Alumni who shared their wisdom as older young adults. The day is capped off by a fitness community activity. This year the seniors picked SkyZone as their venue.

The ultimate goal is to provide enough fun and meaningful seminars so that everyone leaves with a greater understanding of the world and themselves.

As a District, we want students to be prepared to live, learn, work, and grow once they leave high school. Senior Transition Day is just one of the many ways that we are making connections with the community and building relationships with local colleges, businesses, and families. Congratulations to Mr. Glass who had the yearbook dedicated to him, which is traditionally announced on this day. Ms. Goodfellow does an awesome job organizing this event, and we appreciate her efforts.

Tom Elliott Earns Trip to Louisville

Wheatland-Chili sophomore, Tommy Elliott, was selected to attend the TRAnsportation and Civil Engineering (TRAC) Program Bridge

Building Competition in Louisville, KY, from May 27-29. The TRAC Program was formed through collaboration between WEMOCO and the Department of Transportation (DOT). WEMOCO’s School-to-Work Liaison, Jeanine Gallina, was instrumental in the curriculum development and forming of the partnership with the DOT. In this joint venture, DOT has provided funding, teacher training, curriculum, and materials for use in the Math and Technology portions of the program. Tommy and his three-student team, The Bridgemasters, entered this competition through their WEMOCO

program. The goal was to develop a Cantilever through Truss Bridge that was tested for strength-to-weight ratio. This WEMOCO team competed against other TRAC student teams from across the country and was the only team to be selected for their design from all of New York State. They presented their design at the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) Spring Meeting in Louisville, KY. Although they did not win the competition, The Bridgemasters team was thrilled to be the NYS representatives. Tommy and one of his teammates hope to continue with the program and enter again next year.

Student-Crafted Railings Unveiled at Monroe 2-Orleans BOCES

Students from Monroe 2-Orleans BOCES unveiled two custom-made, handcrafted steel railings at the entrance to the WEMOCO Career and Technical Education building in Spencerport. The railings were created and installed by welding students in the BOCES 2 Engineering and Metal Fabrication program.

The steel railings feature large, round, precision-cut medallions representing logos from each of the twelve high schools within BOCES 2. The students spent the entire year working on the project, from initial concept design through plasma cutting, to making the final welds, to installation and unveiling. In addition to the permanent railings installed this week, each District was presented with a framed replica medallion created by BOCES 2 Carpentry students. BOCES 2 WEMOCO students joined teachers, administrators, and school board members at the unveiling.

WEMOCO Carpentry teacher, Pete Sharpe, presents the framed Wheatland-Chili medallion to Superintendent Deborah Leh.

Third Graders Learn About Butterflies

For the past 15 years, John MacRoy has been bringing his beautiful butterfly collection from around the world to share with the third-grade class. He covers the areas of natural science, geography, social sciences, and the humanities. He puts an emphasis on the fact that we are interdependent global communities. Mr. MacRoy takes the students on an adventure around the globe to compare their lifestyle to others. The third graders are then given an opportunity to view and examine a natural display, which is not open to the general population. He sets up exotic butterflies and creepy crawlies from all over the earth for the students to look at. He also encourages the students to appreciate their own natural understanding and look around to see what creatures they can find right in their backyard.

Fourth Graders Take a Trip Back in Time

On May 28, the fourth-grade students were delighted to take a field trip to the Genesee Country Museum and Village in Mumford. The students had a chance to tour the village, play some common games from colonial times,

and visit with four different experts in order to learn about historic trades. The students visited a tinsmith, quilter, weaver, and a spinner. After a picnic lunch, each group had a chance to try walking on stilts, rolling a hoop, playing skittles, and many other games from the 18th century. Thanks to a generous grant from Target, everyone was able to spend a wonderful day "back in time."
