THE PAST PRESIDENT'S REPORTThis was another busy and productive year, during my sec-

ond term as President (from 19&0-1981). The exhibition sched-ule began with the Annual Watercolor Show, chaired by GeorgeHowell and assisted by Mary Elsey, during the month of October,1980. 171 people entered the show representing some of thebest watercolorists in the .state. In addition to being an art-istic success, the show netted the club $530. A unique recep-tion was held on the opening day of the show where entrantswere served wine and hors d'oeuvres and were present for theawards ceremony. This was followed in November by the 11thAnnual Michigan Photo Exhibition, chaired again by RichardShirk. 173 people entered the show which netted $335.37, mak-ing it one of the most financially successful shows this pro-gram year. Of course, as usual, the exhibition contained someof the best and most innovative work being done by Michiganphotographers.

December saw the Gold Medal Show for the 67th year. Un-fortunately very few, only 41 Scarabs entered, which netted aprofit of only $9.4#. But the show was excellent, and EdgarYaeger, after many years, won the Gold Medal. Obviously, wemust work harder next year to encourage more people to enterthe show.

In February the club again mounted the second revival ofthe Advertising Art Show chaired by Jim Taliana. 135 pieces ofwork by 51 artists were submitted and a beautiful show was se-lected. Net profit was about $750, and it looks like we havere-established this as one of Detroit's major shows.

In March we presented the first Scarab Printmaking exhibi-tion, chaired by member Lee Ann Miller, who is the Chairpersonof Art and Art History at Wayne State University. The show wassmall, as was to be expected for a first effort, but it waschoice, and is eagerly looked forward to by printmakers as anannual event. The show netted a modest profit of $57.76, andbrought 43 printmakers into the club, many for the first time.

April was Silver Medal month. 143 people entered the show, member Lula Nestor won Second Prize in paintingj and the shownetted the largest profit for the year,1 $676.46. Lon Skoglunddid a fine job as chairman, and we are grateful to him for hisefforts. Finally, the All-Member Show, chaired by Rod Jacob, opened in May, and runs thru June 20, for the presentation ofawards and a fabulous garden party. 43 Scarabs entered theirbest work, and the income from the show is projected to beabout 45175.

We can indeed be proud of our exhibition year, and we oweour chairpeople a great show of appreciation. Without them, the public goodwill and club income would have been impossible.

Many thanks to Steve Veresh, Arts Promotion chairman, forplanning and supervising the highly successful "Mini-Shows" inthe lounge. There is no cost to members if they wish to ex-hibit.

Past President's Report, continued.

Our social activities also produced both revenue andnours of good times for our members and guests. In October \vekicked off the year with our second President's Party. 123people enjoyed Greek music arid food and set the tone for a hap-py year to come, and we netted about cp800.

Our Annual Auction in November was a combination socialevent and fund raiser, and thanks to the generosity of aboutseventy Scarabs, netted the club almost exactly $5000.

I extend my "special thanks" to Patricia Eramley, socialchairwoman and Presidential nominee for 19&2, in hosting agreat Christmas Party, which was enhanced by being part of theGold Medal Awards ceremony. 79 people ate and drank to theseason, and we were $202.46 richer when the last "Tom and Jer-ry" was consumed.

Birthday luncheons under the care and feeding of PatriciaBramley and assisted by George Howell were a monthly event ea-gerly awaited by about twenty five birthday people each month. They have proved to be great fun and a wonderful opportunityfor newcomers to meet the tried and true Scarabs.

In March we held an innovative Prospective hew Member par-ty at which people recommended by Board members were invited toa champagne supper to get to know us better, in hopes that theywould like what they saw and want to become part of the club. For a small financial outlay, we were able to attract 10 newScarabs. Heartened by its success, we hope to use this methodas an annual event to attract new people. We will extend aninvitation to all Scarabs over the months to suggest theirfriends and relatives as prospective members and guests of theclub.

Of course the Awards Dinners closing most of the shows weregood social events and exposed a lot of new people to the cluband its members. From these events we were able to attract nev;members.

In March we celebrated our annual St. Patrick's Day lunch-eon, with the traditional "corned beef and cabbage" and greenthings. Some 40 members and guests attended and stayed to singIrish songs 'til closing time.

Membership remains at about the 240 mark. It seems thatfor every new member we get we lose another. Increased member-ship should be a club goal for the coming year. Unfortunatelydeath claimed several long time Scar&bs over the year. HussellIngham, a past President for four terms and a long time member, died in April. Jean Dossin passed away this Spring, and lastFall we lost Thomas Gibson. In addition we lost the spouses ofKen Lockwood and Anna Masters. As I leave office I would liketo give thanks to the two Boards and many chairpeople who help-ed me during the past two years. The board and Officers were:Steve Veresh and Robert VanderKloot, Vice Presidents, EugeneIgnasiak and Caroline Foster, Secretaries, and Richard Vernick,

Treasurer. Board members were Patricia Bramley, FrancineKachman, Margaret Wilson, Ernest Scanes, Joseph Maniscalco,Arthur Parquette, Fred Moorehouse, and Warfield Rock. Chair-people were: Harold Tarnas, George Howell, Mary Elsey, Rich-ard Shirk, Bill Bostick, Francine Kachman, Donald Huegerich,Jim Taliana, Lon Skoglund, Lee Ann Miller, Rod Jacob, MichaelCaudle, Gilbert Treweek, blwood Killer, Dennis Barrie, andLewis Dickens, III. And of course, Fred Moorehouse, who formany years has kept us informed of the Arts and Socials byediting, designing and producing the Scarab "BUZZ" and themembership rosters, etc. Special thanks are due Harold Tarnas,House Committee Chairman, who unselfishly gave so much of histime for the betterment of our building.

Brian Smith, our Managing Director, has assisted me be-yond the call of duty and helped members and others in guidingour club to a more rewarding arid prestigious position — Ithank you.

This year's nominating committee consisting of chairmanGene Ignasiak arid members Francine Kachman, Ted Zberanowsky, worked hard to get highly qualified members to run for office, how the fruits of these labors are about to be known. Goodluck to them as they undertake the greet responsibility ofsteering this club on the proper course for future develop-ment. Perhaps in the next year our acquisition of the prop-erty next door will be able to see completion arid we can be-gin making plans for making the area serviceable arid beauti-ful. This should also be a high priority item for the comingadministration.

Sincerely,

Alex C. Marines, President

Alex has received a bronze plaquebearing the inscription:

RUSSELL T. INGHAM 1919-1981

It is with deep regret that we reportthe passing of Scarab Russ Ingham.

Russ was a member for many years, andhe worked for the club in almost every cap-acity. He was a "Regular" on many committees,he was a hard-working Director, and he heldthe club Presidency for four terms. Russloved the Scarab Club, and he served it well.

He was an Air Corps pilot during WorldWar II. His 63 missions in the EuropeanTheater earned him the Distinguished FlyingCross and promotion to Squadron Leader.

He worked for 37 yeers as sales managerfor the former Avrill Press and as a sales-man for Bland Printing Company.

Russ thoroughly enjoyed Scarab Club pic-nics and parties, and he added his fine humorto the luncheon gatherings. He was a well-respected man, with a gentle, open mannerthat made everyone think of him as a personalfriend.

He is survived by his much-loved wife,Adeline, a son, and three grandchildren.

The Scarab Club was important to Russ, but no more important than he was to the Club. His contribution over the years was truly out-standing, and he will be sorely missed.

Vernon Says "Thanks"As you all know, the benefit dinner for Vernon Holley,

our "Man-about-the-Club", was a wonderful success. RichardVernick presented his Musical-Photo Paintings, and BrianSmith prepared a tasty repast (with maybe a little help frombrother Stewart and Pat Bramley).

Vernon sends the following message to his many friends:

To the members of the Scarab Club:

I would like to thank all of you for your generous con-tribution to me after my home was burglarized on New Year'sEve.

The bandits not only robbed me of many cherished belong-ings, but severely damaged my spirit as well. Having livedthrough such a frightening experience makes me all the moregrateful for your concern.

Your contribution has been of tremendous help to me inrestoring necessities that were stolen. Your concern hashelped to restore my faith in humanity.

Sincerely,Vernon Holley
