JUDGES

Marie Baron (Musical Theatre, Speech Arts, Intermediate Voice)

After training at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto and the University of Toronto’s Opera Department, Ms. Baron began her stage career performing with the Canadian Opera Company. For the next 30 years, she went on to perform in nightclubs, cabarets and theatres across Canada, the United States and in London, England. Ms. Baron has played leading roles in both musicals and plays. Her dramatic roles include Honey in Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf (Grand Theatre, London), Celia in As You Like It (Stratford Festival), and Janet in the original production of Waiting For the Parade (Alberta Theatre Projects).

Some of her favourite musical roles include Sarah in Guys and Dolls (Stratford Festival), Amalia in She Loves Me (Grand Theatre, London), Lady Audley in Lady Audley’s Secret (Shaw Festival) and Jenny in Company (CanStage, Toronto). The successful meeting of Ms. Baron and Gilbert and Sullivan began at the Stratford Festival with leading roles in The Mikado, The Gondoliers and Iolanthe. These productions were filmed and televised on CBC and HBO. She reprised her role as Yum-Yum in The Mikado on tour in Canada, the United States, The Old Vic in London, England and on Broadway. For the past 15 years, Ms. Baron was the Head of the Vocal Discipline in the Music Theatre-Performance Program at Sheridan College. She has also conducted workshops in Music Theatre Performance throughout Canada and continues to work with professional theatre artists in her Toronto studio.

Esther Bing (Intermediate Piano)

Esther Bing is an Off-Campus Piano Instructor for the Conservatory at Mount Royal University (Calgary), and a Piano Examiner with The Royal Conservatory of Music (RCM). She has been teaching piano since she was 14 years old. Her university education includes a Bachelor Degree in Piano Performance from the University of British Columbia (Henri-Paul Sicsic & Jane Coop), and a Master Degree in Piano Performance from The Boston Conservatory (Michael Lewin). Notable accomplishments include: a full scholarship to The Boston Conservatory (TBC) from winning the Open Scholarship Competition; Winner, TBC’s Piano Honours Competition; Runner-up and Finalist at the UBC Concerto Competition, and Richmond Gateway Competition, respectively; First Prize (silver medal) at the Regina Conservatory of Music, and First Prize in the Regina Kiwanis Festival’s Open Scholarship Competition. While in university, Ms. Bing was the Orchestral Pianist for both The Boston Conservatory, and UBC Orchestras. Since settling in Calgary, Ms. Bing has performed concerts with CPO & ESO musicians at the Columbia Valley Chamber Music Festival, the Instrumental Society of Calgary, and other venues. She also served two years as President, and six years as Vice President of the Piano Diploma Association (Calgary). Ms. Bing is a Piano Instructor at the Calgary Arts Summer School, and recently completed a Gary Burton on-line Jazz Improvisation course, through Berklee College of Music. Ms. Bing is fluent in French, likes reading books, enjoys running, and cooking vegetarian foods. She and her husband, Matt, live with a large, white, dog-like cat, named Ziggy.

Christine Bootland (Strings, Guitar)

Calgary native, Christine Bootland began her studies with Fay Johnson and later at the Mount Royal College Academy of Music with John Kadz. She completed a Bachelor of Music Performance degree at the University of British Columbia under the direction of Eric Wilson and later participated in the Masters Program at the University of Toronto under the tutelage of Shauna Rolston. Christine is an active extra performer with the Lethbridge and Red Deer Symphonies as well as the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra. She has toured Europe, Asia, Africa and Australia as a member of the Armadillo String Quartet of Canada and enjoys doing educational outreach performance programs within the community. Christine has adjudicated all over Alberta and BC and her students have won numerous awards at all levels. Her philosophy is to help create future generations of music lovers of all styles whether they be professionals, amateurs or concert goers. Christine has been on the faculty at Medicine Hat College as cello instructor, ensemble coach, Academy Instructor

and conductor and program coordinator for both the Community and Junior Orchestras since 2001. In 2010 she was pleased to be invited to become a cello instructor at the University of Lethbridge Conservatory of Music. Her recent passion is co-ordinating and teaching the Bring Back the Music program at two public schools in Medicine Hat, a strings and guitar program for grades 4-6.

William Gordon (Brass, Woodwind, Percussion)

William Gordon was educated at the Royal College of Music in London, England, where he received the ARCM Diploma in Performance. He was appointed Principal Horn of the Ulster Orchestra, Belfast at the age of 20 and performed extensively with the major orchestras of London. Since coming to Canada he has performed for CBC radio, the CBC Winnipeg Symphony and the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra. He has served as President of the Manitoba Music Educators Association and is well known throughout the province as an adjudicator, clinician, conductor and examiner. William Gordon recently retired from the School of Music at Brandon University after more than forty years of teaching at Brandon University.

Joel Tranquilla (Choral)

Dr. Joel Tranquilla is a conductor and music educator noted for his versatile musicianship and creative programming. As the Director of Choral Activities at Trinity Western University he oversees a program of six choirs and teaches various other courses within the School of the Arts, Media + Culture. In addition to his work at TWU, Joel is the newly appointed Conductor of both the Valley Festival Singers in Abbotsford and the award-winning Coastal Sound Youth Choir in Coquitlam. He is also the Associate Conductor of the Canadian Chamber Choir and has performed extensively with that ensemble since 2007. The CCC’s latest CD, Sacred Reflections of Canada was nominated for a 2016 Juno Award. Before moving to British Columbia, Joel served as Artistic Director of the Windsor Classic Chorale, Chorus Master of the Windsor Symphony Orchestra, and taught as a sessional instructor at the University of Windsor in Windsor, Ontario.

Major works conducted include Mendelssohn’s St. Paul (Sea to Sky Symphony and TWU Choirs), Handel’s Alexander’s Feast, Requiems by Fauré and Duruflé (Windsor Symphony Orchestra and Chorus), Frank Martin’s Mass for Double Choir, and Allan Bevan’s Passion Oratorio Nou Goth Sonne Under Wode (TWU Choirs and Orchestra). Choirs prepared by Tranquilla have appeared under the batons of Robert Franz, Kevin Mallon, John Morris Russell, and Ivars Taurins. In March 2016, the TWU Chamber Choir was invited to take part in a performance at Carnegie Hall under the direction of Dr. Richard Sparks.

In high demand as an adjudicator and clinician across the country, Joel is a past Guest Conductor of the New Brunswick Youth Choir and was the Assistant Conductor of the 2012 National Youth Choir. He was the winner of the 2012 Sir Ernest MacMillan Memorial Foundation Award as well as the recipient of the Emerging Artist Award at the 2013 Ontario Premier’s Awards for Excellence in the Arts. He holds degrees from Mount Allison University, the University of Michigan, and Michigan State University where his doctoral research was in the area of Canadian choral-orchestral works.

Corey Hamm (Senior Piano)

Pianist Corey Hamm is establishing a unique musical profile performing widely in North America and in Asia as both soloist and chamber musician. His CD of Frederic Rzewski’s hour-long solo piano epic The People United Will Never Be Defeated! (Redshift Records) won Spotify's Best Classical Recording 2014, and Best Classical Recording at the 2014 Western Canadian Music Awards. He has performed the work over 80 times and many more performances are to come in 2018, the year of Rzewski’s 80th Birthday. Corey Hamm’s extensive work in the 1990s with the great French composer Henri Dutilleux will come to fruition in his plan to record Dutilleux’s

complete works for piano in the near future. Among his other recording plans is a soon-to-be-released CD of solo works written for him by Keith Hamel, Jocelyn Morlock, Jordan Nobles, Dorothy Chang, and Scott Godin, and he will perform two works on a CD of the music of Jocelyn Morlock on Redshift Records.

Corey Hamm has commissioned, premiered and recorded over two hundred works by composers from all over the world. These commissions have been for solo piano, various chamber music formations as well as concerti.

He has also commissioned over 50 works for The Nu:BC Collective and for Hammerhead Consort (two piano and two percussion). As pianist for The Nu:BC Collective he has released the critically acclaimed CD Beyond Shadows (Redshift TK432). As a founding member of Hammerhead Consort, he received the 1993 Sir Ernest Macmillan Memorial Foundation Chamber Music Award, and was winner of the 1992 National Chamber Music Competition.

In recent years, Corey Hamm has studied, recorded and toured one of the great piano works of the last decades, Frederic Rzewski's monumental hour-long solo piano epic, The People United Will Never Be Defeated! (Redshift TK431). This work, made up of a theme and 36 variations, has been recorded by a small number of pianists including Marc-André Hamelin, Ursula Oppens, and Stephen Drury. Frederic Rzewski received Corey Hamm’s interpretation as one of the finest to date. “Excellent! Bravo! This may be the best recording.”

Corey Hamm was soloist in the World Premiere of Jordan Nobles’ Piano Concerto with Bramwell Tovey and the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra. He gave the World Premiere of Howard Bashaw's Concerto for Two Pianos and Percussion with conductor Grzegorz Nowak and the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra, and has recently performed Ravel’s Piano Concerto for the Left Hand, Faure’s Fantasie, and Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue.

Dr. Hamm is Associate Professor of Piano at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, where he was awarded the prestigious Killam Teaching Award. He is on the Piano Faculty of the Summer Institute for Contemporary Performance Practice (SICPP) at NEC in Boston. His beloved teachers include Lydia Artymiw, Marek Jablonski, Stéphane Lemelin, Ernesto Lejano, and Thelma Johannes O'Neill.

Joanne Kolomyjec (Senior Voice)

Artistry of the highest order and inspired portrayals have secured soprano Joanne Kolomyjec an enviable reputation in the world of opera. In recent years her highly acclaimed performances of Tatiana in Eugene Onegin, the title roles in Tosca and Jenufa, and Marguerite in Faust, Donna Elvira in Don Giovanni and Magda Sorel in The Consul have thrilled audiences and critics alike in Canada, USA and Great Britain. A graduate with distinction of the University of Toronto’s Opera School and of its Bachelor of Music in Performance, Ms. Kolomyjec went on to be a winner of the Metropolitan Opera National Competition (1983). She has been hailed as a stylish and elegant Mozartean, and has portrayed the Countess and Susanna in Le Nozze di Figaro, as well as Donna Elvira and Donna Anna in Don Giovanni, and Fiordiligi in Cosi fan Tutti. Other prominent roles include Violetta in La Traviata, Mimi in La Boheme, Agathe in Der Freischutz, Micaela in Carmen, Madame Lidoine and Blanche in Les Dialogues des Carmelites, Lia in L’Enfant Prodigue, Rosalinda in Die Fledermaus and Anna Glawari in The Merry Widow, Alice Ford in Verdi's masterpiece Falstaff, and her first venture into Wagner with Freia in Das Rheingold. Ms. Kolomyjec has sung with all the major opera companies in Canada, and in the US with Santa Fe Opera, Florentine Opera, Portland Opera, Utah Opera, Arizona Opera. Ms. Kolomyjec has also appeared regularly as a guest artist with major symphony orchestras across Canada and the USA. She made her Carnegie Hall debut in a concert performance of Strauss’ Daphne with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra. Ms. Kolomyjec has also excelled as a recitalist, performing with tenor Richard Margison in a recital tour. Her most recent Canadian tour featuring a program of Russian songs with renowned pianist Janina Fialkowska, also released as a critically acclaimed CD entitled "None But The Lonely Heart". Other recordings include 'Song to the Moon' with Mario Bemardi and the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra and A Night in Vienna' with the Kitchener Waterloo Symphony and RafFi Armenian. An exponent of contemporary music as well, Ms. Kolomyjec has recorded Shostakovich s cycle of chamber songs, Romanzen Suite, and songs by the Canadian composers Oscar Morawetz, Sonnets of the Portuguese, and an orchestral cycle entitled Cantiones Mysticae by Godfrey Ridout. Ms. Kolomyjec was on faculty at Memorial University of Newfoundland and at the University of Ottawa in Ontario. She is presently in her 14th year on the voice faculty at the Schulich School of Music, McGill University in Montreal Quebec, where she was presented with the 2013/2014 Teacher of the Year Award. As well Ms. Kolomyjec has presented many master classes at music faculties across Canada, has been on the voice faculty and audition panel for Opera NUOVA in the summers and been a jurist on panels for a number of competitions, including Jeunesse Musicale, Ontario Arts Council, National Music Competition and the Canadian Music Competition, as well as for the Juno awards and Canada Council grants.

This award of $200 is presented to the runner-up in the Saskatchewan Choral Federation Choral Class. Betty Tydeman had been involved in music festival for most of her life, from her time as a competitor in Rosetown until her work with the Saskatoon Music Festival, where she made significant contributions in all aspects of its organization. Betty also contributed to the community as a member with her Church Choir, the Saskatoon Choral Society, the University Chorus, and served on the Board of the Saskatoon Symphony Orchestra.

#4 Kiwanis Club of Regina Gallagher Memorial Children/Youth Choral Scholarship

Provincial Classes 146, 147, 148, 149, 150, 151, 152, 153, 154, 155, 156, 157, 158, 159, 160, 161, 162, 163: The Gallagher Memorial Scholarship of $500 is presented by the Kiwanis Club of Regina, in tribute to the Gallagher Family, for the finest performance in the Children’s or Youth Choir Class. The late Harold Gallagher served as president of the club in 1977-1978. The award, while recognizing Harold’s service in many capacities during his 37 years of active Kiwanis membership, is intended as well to honour both Harold and the late Mrs. Margaret Gallagher for their gifts of music shared so generously with the community. The magic of music never dies. It has spread far and wide through the Gallaghers. The desire of members of the Kiwanis Club of Regina is that all those who participate in the competition for this special memorial award will continue to carry the magic with them wherever they go.

#5 Goodfellow Memorial Senior Grade A Female Voice Scholarship Provincial Classes 1000, 1001, & 1002: This scholarship of $400 is one of a series of annual Provincial Scholarships, provided by a Memorial Trust Fund. The Saskatchewan Music Festival Association (SMFA) gratefully acknowledges the very generous contribution by the late S. J. Goodfellow of Regina, who established the Trust Fund in honour of his wife, Nancy Goodfellow. During her lifetime, Mrs. Goodfellow had many and varied community interests to which she gave of herself unstintingly. While studying with Madame Alicia Birkett at the Regina Conservatory of Music, she participated in our music festivals for many years.

#6 Goodfellow Memorial Senior Grade A Male Voice Scholarship Provincial Classes 1010, 1011, 1012 & 1013: This scholarship of $400, is in honour of Madame Alicia Birkett. Madame Alicia Birkett, A.R.C.M., L.R.A.M., was an inspirational and successful teacher of her many students from the southern area of this province. In 1927 she came to Canada from Yorkshire, England, where she had fondly been known as the “Nightingale of the North”. She taught at the Regina Conservatory of Music, preparing her students for festival, examination, and concert appearances, until returning to England in the early fifties. Madame Birkett died in England in 1965.

Provincial Classes 1120, 1125: This scholarship of $400 is in memory of Hazel Farnsworth of Regina. Hazel Farnsworth was a well-known singer in southern Saskatchewan. Her teachers included Colin Faunt and Dan Cameron, who prepared her for many award-winning festival and recital performances. She appeared in stage and opera productions with the Regina Amateur Operatic Society and the Regina Conservatory of Music. She performed vocal duets with her husband, the late Stan Farnsworth, and was a choir member of St. Paul’s Cathedral for many years.

Provincial Class 1170: A scholarship of $200, donated by the Yorkton Music Festival, in memory of Heather Laxdal, will be presented to the singer of the winning duo of the lieder class.

A $200 award will also be presented to the pianist of the winning duo. This award honours the contribution of Saskatoon musicians John & Lorna Whelan, pianist and vocalist respectively, who believed that lieder is one of music’s purest moments.

#25 Saskatchewan Registered Music Teachers’ Association Senior Piano Romantic Music Scholarship Provincial Class 2085: The Saskatchewan Registered Music Teachers’ Association (SRMTA) is pleased to provide this scholarship of $400. The SRMTA was formed in 1932 as a provincial organization of music teachers, several years after the formation of smaller branches throughout the province. Today there are over 800 locations on three continents, confirming that they are an international leading quality program for early childhood music education. The MYC Corporate Office provides this scholarship of $400.

and musicals. 2016 Winner – Benton Froc (Melfort Festival)

#50 Regan Grant Memorial Intermediate Musical Theatre Ballad Scholarship Provincial Classes 9001, 9011, 9021, 9031, 9041, 9051: This scholarship of $300 is provided in memory of Regan Grant. Following graduation from MUCC, Regan earned a double Major in Voice and Drama in 1984 from the University of Regina. He spent time at the Banff School of Fine Arts and two summers in B.C. with the Canada Opera Picola. While working at the University Hospital in Saskatoon he performed with the Gateway Players and Persephone Theatre. Regan graduated in June 1988 with a Diploma in Operatic Performance.

Regan was diagnosed in 1986 with HIV infection and battled through a number of illnesses associated with AIDS. He will be remembered for his warmth, humor and love for life and his generosity to friends and co-workers. Regan soldiered on courageously as his health continued to fail. He died peacefully at home on June 28, 1992.

McFarlane-Burton. Joy is currently the President of the Federation of Canadian Music Festivals and was instrumental in bringing Musical Theatre to the National Music Festival stage. Joy has been active as a voice teacher in West Central Saskatchewan for many years and is in demand as an adjudicator throughout Western Canada.

Sandra spent years dedicating her time and energy to her students and the community with her talents. She taught voice for over 40 years and was an inspiration to many. She had a huge role in ensuring the success of the Moose Jaw Music Festival. Sandra still supports the festival through a scholarship and attending every vocal session.

#55 Heather Laxdal Memorial Vocal Award This scholarship of $500 is in memory of Heather Laxdal. Friends set up a scholarship fund when Heather was killed in a car accident on April 21, 1988 at the age of 20. She was completing her second year of Music Performance at the University of Saskatchewan, Saskatoon. Heather competed in the Yorkton Music Festival for twelve years and was recommended to the Provincial Music Festival three years in succession, winning the SMFA Girls’ Vocal Scholarship in 1984.

The Blanche Squires Memorial Awards are provided by a trust and administered by the Order of the Eastern Star. This award of $500 will be presented to the second runner-up to the most outstanding competitor of the Grand Awards Competition.

A memorial award of $750 will be presented to the first runner-up to the most outstanding competitor of the Grand Awards Competition.

2016 Winner – Godwin Friesen (Saskatoon Festival)

#66 Sister Boyle Gold Award of $1000 & Trophy

An award of $1,000, donated by Joanne Messer of Tisdale in memory of Sister Geraldine Boyle, will be presented to the most outstanding competitor of the Grand Awards Competition. The award has been established in recognition of Sister Boyle and her long-standing commitment to music. The late Sister Geraldine Boyle, a Sister of Our Lady of the Missions, received her musical training from Trinity College, London, England and a Bachelor of Arts (music major) from the University of Regina. Sister Boyle taught music in the schools at Wolseley, Regina, Lebret, and Saskatoon. Her teaching was meticulous and she had a never-ending patience and encouragement for her students and colleagues. In addition to her interest in teaching piano, she had a great interest in the promotion of good liturgical and choral music.

2016 Winner – Joanne Peng (Moose Jaw Festival)

Since 1908 the Saskatchewan Music Festival Association has played a major role in the development of a classical competitive music festival system of the highest standard. We appreciate the provincial scholarships bestowed by our many patrons that offer substantial financial sponsorship to our young performers.
