Lake Country Calendar GESS 2012 Graduation - Wednesday June 20, 2012 S3
Welcome George Elliot Secondary class of 2012, family, friends, staff , and any other randoms there are out there! We would like to ask you to take a moment to look around at whom you’re sitting with.
A moment. Most moments pass without notice; most are gone before we
have even recognized they came, but within our moments of greatness, or the times we didn’t feel so great, within the moments that are forever burnt into our memory, it’s never what happened, it’s never what somebody said, it’s how it made us feel. It is each and every unsurpassed moment that began to shape and defi ne the person that we have become.
From the past fi ve years we aren’t going to remember the times sitting there in class more preoccupied about our lunch sitting in our locker than what the teacher was saying, we remember the people sitting beside us at those times, thinking the same exact thing.
A moment can change your life. This one right now we will remember it and hold on to it for as long as you can ;never forget where you came from because no matter where you go in life, no matter the people you meet, no one will know you in quite the same way as the people around you do now, be that classmate, teacher, or parent.
We grew up together, making moments, and we’re standing on the stage as a group tonight because of those moments. Every Terry Fox run, where no one ACTUALLY ran, the days that were made even better because cherry tomato ammo was provided, and World War 3 broke out among the benches, causing everyone to slip for the rest of the day. Every foods class that provided us with a “Teachable moment!” As cliché as it is to say we’ve grown into a family because no matter the faults we had with each other we were always there together; we had no choice! Regardless of how crazy life got there was always a feeling of belonging within these halls. From the gym, to the art room, the smoke pit or the math room and even the principal’s offi ce, we had our close friends, but we’re always a part of something bigger than cliques, or hangout places. We gained some people along the way, taking them in as one of our own, because that’s who we are, but along the way we also lost a good friend, though we will never lose her in our hearts. She proved to us our resilience, character, and the strength that each of us possessed, magnifi ed as we came together to get through something none of us ever imagined.
And now it’s time to look past this moment and into whatever the heck we’re going to do to keep ourselves busy, a summer full of potential as we head into the world as little wide-eyed innocents full of hope and possibilities. Not actually, let’s face it, none of us are innocent; we’re teenagers! But even so whatever this next year brings, jobs, school, the start of relationships, or the end, diff erent cities, countries, or maybe even continents, make sure that we embark to these places with confi dence. Not the type of confi dence that leads to alienation, but the kind that is willing to take criticism and learn from mistakes. It’s time to make those mistakes and make them again, fi nd happiness, and when you do never let it go.
There’s a thing people do called fl ea training, I don’t know anyone personally who does it, but there are people out there.
The trainers do so by putting fl eas in a cardboard box and closing it up. The fl ea will jump and jump continuously, always hitting the lid, but as you watch you see something curious. The fl ea will stop jumping high enough to hit the top; the headache just isn’t worth it. The most extraordinary thing though is that even when they take the lid off , the fl ea will continue to jump just a tad lower than the lid used to be; once they conditioned themselves to that height that’s all they can do! Humans do this too; they are told certain things about themselves by other people, and train themselves to live within the parameters that other people set.
We restrict ourselves and never reach our full potential. We put a cap on the moments we let ourselves experience, sometimes saying we aren’t good enough, or aren’t ready, and with those
words, the moments pass. Marianne Williamson once said “our deepest fear is not that we’re inadequate, our deepest fear is that we’re powerful beyond measure, it is our light not our darkness that most frightens us, but playing small doesn’t serve the world, there is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people wont feel insecure around you, we’re all meant to shine, its not just in some of us, its in everyone and as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same.” We’re all sitting here today, because either you or somebody else told you that you could take that lid
off and jump higher than you ever thought you could. But the thing about a moment is that it can’t be measured.
Although the defi nition of a moment is“An indefi nitely short period of time” its exact timing is
impossible to pinpoint. How many moments make up an hour? A day? A year? How quickly are they slipping through our fi ngers, and turning into new experiences with new people? If there’s one thing this year has taught me is to take a moment (if you will) to actually experience a moment. To really look around at the people you’re going through it with, and to make it better than it will be and better than is already is.
We’re really at the beginning of the rest of our lives, with youth and not much experience to guide us, yet it’s that drive for new knowledge, new people, new places that will dictate our future. It is a temper of will, a quality of the imagination, and vigor of emotions. It’s our time to show the world how great we are. It’s not the time to know exactly what we’re supposed to do or exactly who we want to be, because in all honesty, most of us don’t even know. When we walked through these doors in grade eight they seemed pretty big, and walking out of them now, they still seem just as big. But walk through with courage and belief. So that as we head out into the world that has much bigger issues than tests, social standings, and daily car pranks, remember to keep your roots a foundation for the bigger things life has for you. Remember to work for a cause, not for applause. Live life to express not to impress. Don’t strive to make your presence noticed, just try to make your absence felt.
Congratulations to the class of 2012, and to everyone who got us here, thanks for 5 great years. See you in 10 years? Let’s make a date now so we can all agree and book work off .
It’s not good bye it’s see ya later. Thank you.
