Chaplain’s cornerChaplain’s cornerChaplain’s cornerChaplain’s cornerChaplain’s cornerby the Rev. Noble Don Kerr, Chaplain
Thinking about the 4th of Julyyou might like to study a nice
crisp dollar bill. Don’t ever con-sider the number 13 as bad luck.Just look at all the 13’s on the backof a $1.00 bill, where you will seesome significant insignia that canremind us of what IndependenceDay can mean.
Look at the “Great Seal” on theleft and you see some Latin writ-ing from the poet, Virgil. It tells usa new order has begun, as a newnation emerges from a revolution. The other quotation, around thetop of the pyramid says, “He (God)has favored our undertaking.” Thepyramid suggests something Egyp-tian, referring perhaps to a timewhen people were emancipatedfrom slavery. At the top of the pyra-mid is a “seeing eye”—maybe Ma-sonic—a symbol of God’s watch overa new land of freedom. If you countthe blocks of the pyramid, you findthirteen of them, corresponding tothe thirteen colonies.
On the right side is a floralmedallion on top of the eagle.Within the medallion are again
thirteen stars and below the eagleis a replica of the American flag, which displays a vertical row ofthirteen stripes, emblematic of thethirteen original colonies.
The eagle, once considered thesymbol of America, holds in one ofits talons an olive branch, symbol-izing peace. The other talon holdseither a group of arrows or sheavesof wheat, symbols of military pre-paredness or growing industry.
Around the head of the eagleare the words, “E Pluribus Unum,”the characteristic motto of theU.S.A.—out of many, one nationunited. At the center are the com-manding words, “In God We Trust.”Words not written by chance. OnJuly 14, 1776 there was very littleone could trust. Times were un-settled with internal conflicts andpeople were anxious. It soundsfamiliar.
So, on our Day of Independence, let us celebrate with pride andhonor the grandeur of being a pa-triot and salute the flag of theUnited States of America.
I just got back from attending theMay Unit/Club Head Meeting
as I sit down to figure out what towrite here. The over-riding themeof the meeting was “we have a lackof communications!” It remindedme of a note I added to an articlepublished in the May 2001 Re-porter.
Editor’s Note: When I createdthe SunCoast Florida FreemasonryWebsite towards the end of 1995, Iplaced this phrase on the homepage, “This home page is dedicatedto the concept: If Freemasonry isto grow again, the outside worldmust know about us, as they did inthe first half of 20th Century. It’snot that we need to change who weare or what we do, it’s that we’vegot to let people know who we areand what we do. First, we need to
tell it to our own members!” At thesame time I placed a quote fromIll. C. Fred Kleinknecht, 33°, Sov-ereign Grand Commander, Scot-tish Rite – Southern Jurisdiction,“We can’t grow, if they don’t know!,”on that same home page and at thebottom of odd-numbered pages inthe Reporter! So this editor hasbeen heralding this concept nowfor almost five years (make that 10years)—the more things change, the more they stay the same! Bythe way, the even-numbered pagesin the Reporter have, “Change isinevitable. Growth is optional!”The world is, of course, changing, are we growing?
It seems that we are still notpaying attention to communica-tions, this is a two-way streetBrothers! Members and leaders!
We can’t grow, if they don’t know!

Potentate’sNotes
Nobles,
It is my honor to offer to you Noble Dorwin Pulford as Shriner of the Year. This is an honor for our Sahib Shrine. He is a humanitarian and a greatasset to Sahib. He is always willing to do what is necessary to help ourgreat fraternity.
I have been asked by our Bingo crew to ask all of our Shrine ladies to comeon Tuesday to play Bingo at Sahib. It is a lot of fun and you will enjoyyourselves. This is another way to help our Shrine.
We just got back from our cruise and what a cruise it was. If you didn’t go,you missed out on a lot of Shrine fun. The weather was wonderful; the seasnever got higher than 4 feet. Scotland and Ireland are two great country-sides; the ship had excellent food at all meals. I had the chance to seeNormandy shores and the Memorial. If you ever have the chance to see it,please go. You will never regret the opportunity. The Memorial is fantasticthe cliffs were huge; I don’t know how the rangers were able to climb upand do what they had to do. It truly was a great moment for us.
In London, we were given a tour of St Paul’s Cathedral, this is wherePrincess Diana was married, a very beautiful church. We were very fortu-nate to meet our friends Kaye and Ron Gibley who showed us London andspecial places of interest. They helped us to tour the Grand Lodge of En-gland, which was amazing. They send their love and greetings to all theirfriends at Sahib. Everything on this trip was of a special time in our lives.Lady Carol and I are very blessed to have had the opportunity of a trip ofthis magnitude.
Nobles, let us not forget our Ceremonial the first week in June and that weare all members of the Membership Committee.
God bless you all and let us not forget our Blue Lodges; this is where it allbegan.
Yours in the Faith,
Don Vos, Potentate

There are some quiet days coming this month; sothey tell me. May was again filled with many
events. We started with the Miami Potentate’s Ball.Ray Perez and his Lady Cindy and Jim Jensen and hisLady Eileen travelled with us and we all enjoyed ourfun-filled weekend. We hope other nobles will thinkabout travelling with us to future balls. We were backfor a day or two and then we were off again to Ocalafor the Florida Shrine Association convention wherewe were able to renew acquaintances with manyShriner friends.
The Divan travelled to watch our units in compe-tition. The Model-T’s looked very sharp in their‘salmon’ shirts—at least that’s the color Ron and Fred
told me they were! Our Clown Unit looked great asusual and I’m sure they took their share of prizes;then we went to watch the Oriental Band in action. They blew away their competition; in fact, they wereso good that four other temples were trying to getthem to transfer!
Max and I were privileged to ride on the OrientalBand float for the downtown Ocala Parade. The crowdcheered and danced to the beat of the band. I wouldlike to encourage other units to perform at FSA—itwould be wonderful to see them next year at WestPalm. Until later, remember, “To have a friend, be afriend.”
If you did not go to the Tribute to Patsy Cline showApril 30, you missed a great show. We had some
local talent in the show who demonstrated theirdancing skills on stage.
The Do-Si-Do Twins, Ron LeVene and Ill. Sir DaleLaBell regaled the audience with their spinningmoves, while two clowns (not in face) Noble FredPhillips and Ill. Sir Oscar Cloutier danced and spundirected by “Patsy Cline”. It was a sight to behold anda very entertaining show. We are looking forward toattending the “Legendary Ladies” show in the fall.
With the Florida Shrine Association meeting nowhistory, we look forward to Imperial Session inToronto. But first we have a Ceremonial this month
to create new Nobles of the Mystic Shrine. Our Cer-emonial Masters Ed Jordan and Rocky Kearney havebeen working hard to make this a very successfulceremonial. The ritual casts have also been workinghard to present their portions of the program. All thishappens because everyone is working as a team atSahib.
Membership and money continue to be of greatconcern. We continue to welcome new associates andaffiliates, but the Grim Reaper takes as many or morethan we get. There are many Master Masons in ourarea who are not yet members of our Shrine. Some-times all it takes is to ask, and ask and ask again.
Sahib Recorder John Cooney, III, is currently hav-ing medical problems, and is unable to write his
article for the month.Potentate Don Vos has asked me to fill in for John
until a medical evaluation has been made as to hisprognosis. We will keep you informed as to his condi-tion, as we learn of it.
Early in June, Sahib will have a Ceremonial towelcome new nobles into our Shrine. This is always aspecial time for us, and if possible, plan on attendingthe ceremony. The Building of the Arch presentationis well worth seeing.
Many of our snowbird nobles have once more flownnorth. We truly miss them at our Thursday luncheonsand at our other events. These northern visitors playa big part in the success of our Shrine. We hope theyhave a pleasant summer, and return to our part of theworld soon.
As you know, there is no Reporter issued in themonth of July. Your Divan and other nobles will beattending the Imperial Session in Toronto early inthe month. This promises to be an interesting meet-ing, and we will no doubt see one or two new Shrinesfrom other countries accepted into the Shrine. Theremay be another one or two who will apply for dispen-sation at this session. It is good to see the number ofour Shrines expand in other parts of the world. Morewill be reported on this after the session.
In order to keep our restaurant and lounge operat-ing in the summer months, we need your attendanceand support. Past history indicates that we operateour Shrine at a loss for the months of June, July,August and September. Your help in assisting us tokeep our losses at a minimum this summer will beappreciated.

It’s summertime, and the Florida weather and heatreminds me of each of our past travels in crossing
the Hot Sands. While those days of initiation have changed, it is
still extremely relevant that we all strive to attractnew members into our Blue Lodges and Shrine!
Many of our seasonal Shriners have traveled backnorth, and many of us are traveling our annual vaca-tions.
But, I encourage all of you; go visit your BlueLodge, or a local Masonic Lodge. The work and fellow-ship are second to none.
I want to thank each and every club officer, andour membership, as well as their dedicated ladies,
friends and family for a great year in fellowship andfun.
Gulf Shrine Club would never be as successful aswe are, without the generous time and efforts do-nated by our group. What a great testament to serv-ing mankind.
I wish each and everyone a very peaceful summer, travel and excitedly await your return to our meetings.
Our next luncheon will be Tuesday, September 14.Come out, join us and enjoy some of the best fellow-ship any Shrine Club and unit can have.
I am extremely proud to stand beside, walk withand work the many events that we do every year withthese outstanding men. God bless.
We can’t grow, if they don’t know!

Be safe and stay well.
I seem to recall that not too long ago; I heard a lot ofcomplaining about the weather and wishing for the
return of the summer warmth. Well folks, I guess yougot your wish, and literally over night if you recall.
The warm weather is nice, except if you are ex-pected to parade and perform other functions astridea very hot motorcycle. So, if you have seen a lot lessof the big Motor Corps stallions parked out on theslab; that is more than likely the reason. Unless ofcourse, if it was between May 10 and 24, then most ofus were probably up in the mountains surroundingMurphy, North Carolina, enjoying the much coolerriding weather.
Now in all honesty, I can only speculate on that, because, as of this writing only a few of the Corpshave actually departed for the north. Some of thelucky ones are Wally (Red Dog) and Connie (Cooter)Lacey, Jay (The Badge) and Connie Spenla and Gary(Stumpy) Nickols. They are also preparing the wayand prepping Gary’s lovely River’s Edge RV Park forthe arrival of the rest of us for the long weekend ofThursday, May 20 through Sunday May 23. I willventure to say that if we have a tenth of the fun wehave had in past years, no one will go away disap-pointed. Now, that’s Gary’s promise, so don’t go hold-ing me liable for not having a good time should y’all
have decided to travel up for the festivities. And, as areminder, the weekend has always been open to allShriners and their friends.
The Corps members just use this time as an excusefor riding the great roads of the mountains during theday and then discussing the ride at night while relax-ing around the huge fire pit near the pavilion. Ofcourse, adult beverages are always welcome, as longas you are willing to share. Next month I will give youa follow-up report on all of the fun and sordid eventswhich took place—if I hear about them, that is.
Since my last article announcing the encroach-ment of Thursday’s Biker Billy Burger nights, servedby Beautiful Biker Betty Babes, I have noticed a lot offolks running around the Sahib lounge salivating. The lovely ladies tending our bar have also reporteda significant increase in the use of bar napkins bypeople just walking around in a daze wiping theirchins mumbling “burgers now, burgers now” or some-thing to that effect. Hmmm, maybe I should have heldoff announcing the dates for these events that starton July 15 through August 26. Oops, there I go again.Sorry. Hang in there, folks! It is just around thecorner and try wearing bibs the next time you are inthe lounge so that napkins do not become a major

And as we go to press, no one has correctly identi-fied our May ‘Quotable Notable’ as Dave Barry whowrote, “It’s very common for people reaching middleage to turn into Republicans. It can happen over-night. You go to bed as your regular old T-shirt-wearing self, and you wake up in the morning withRalph Lauren clothing and friends named Muffy.”
So here’s our June quiz—concerning the newlyelected President of Brazil, who observed, “WhatLula wants for Brazil is what we used to call theAmerican dream. We in the U.S., by contrast, wherethe richest 1% now owns more financial wealth thanthe bottom 95% combined, are living in a society thatis fast becoming more like Brazil.” The first reader tosend the correct answer to the above e-mail addresswins a free Tuesday morning breakfast for two withthe North Port Shrine Club.

Last month we complained about the unseason-ably cold weather. Now, early May, it’s beautiful!
This is the Florida weather we’ve come to know andlove!
The Black Camel seems to call more frequentlythese months. It’s inevitable with our advancingmembership age. The Venice Shrine Club lost a veryvalued and active member in April with the passingof Richard Bragdon. An orthopedic surgeon by profes-sion, he very enthusiastically solicited donationsduring Shriners Hospital Days. Always a “regular” atour monthly lunches, he handled the sales of clubshirts and caps until a few years ago when, due to
deteriorating health, he handed those duties off to hisson in law, Noble Evan Lebson. Venice Shrine Club’sChaplain, Louis Ortt, PP, 33°, fittingly conductedMasonic Funeral Services in Dr. Bragdon’s remem-brance.
The Venice Shrine Club meets for lunch at 11:00a.m. on the 3rd Tuesday of each month (except Julyand August) at the Venice/Nokomis Elks Club, 1021Discovery Way, Nokomis, Florida. All Shriners areinvited to join us. Please give President Bill Long acall a day or two in advance, if possible, at 408-7950.We look forward to greeting you.
While Nobles J.D. Copher, Jack Watson, and Bob Nadeau preparedthe beautiful deep fried turkeys for “Thanksgiving in April,”
Clint Van Tassell and Jim MacDonal looked on with approval.
Noble Ed Cornell and Lady June showed their guests through the buffetduring the April outing at Dallas White Park in North Port.
The May mixer was also a celebration of President SamCohen and Lady Marsha’s 50th wedding anniversary.

Shriners International Awareness Week is June 6-12, 2010, and nobles around the world are encouraged to participate in this exciting opportunity to celebrate the fraternity and recognize the day the Imperial Council was founded – June 6, 1876. The Imperial Council is the governing body of Shriners International.
June 6-12, Shriners everywhere are asked to wear their fez, if appropriate, or a hat, shirt, lapel pin or other item with the fraternal logo to help recognize fellow nobles and increase awareness about Shriners International. Many Shriners are also organizing special events at their temples and in their communities.
“Shriners International Awareness Week is the perfect opportunity for nobles to tell the world about our feztastic fraternity,” said Imperial Membership Committee Chairman George Mitchell. “It is also a time to join together as an organization and celebrate our many impressive accomplishments over the years. We have a lot to be proud of, and I think it’s important for us to recognize that and host events and activities that get people excited about us.”
Here are a few ways nobles can participate in Shriners International Awareness Week:
• Wear their fez on Shriners International Awareness Week when appropriate (during an official Shriners function).
• Show pride in Shriners International
OSQ210JTTC
This pocket-sized guide emphasizes the lighter side of the fraternity with an entertaining tone. It is an information-packed but easy-to-understand booklet about Shriners International and Shriners Hospitals for Children®, perfect to give to people who may not know much about the organization.
Celebrate Shriners International Awareness Week
by wearing a hat, shirt, lapel pin or other item with the fraternal logo.
• Organize an event at their temple or in their local community. Invite the public to participate in the event to increase awareness about the temple and Shriners International.
• Contact the Temple Recorder or Public Relations Chairman to order copies of the Shriner Primer. Hand out copies to neighbors, friends, family members and others who may be interested in learning more about Shriners International and Shriners Hospitals for Children®.
• Contact one of the Shriners Hospitals for Children® to schedule a tour. Organize a group tour for interested community members.
• Include information about Shriners International Awareness Week on the temple Web site and in the temple calendar, publications and electronic communications. Announce the date at temple and club meetings.
• Be sure that each and every noble knows about Shriners International Awareness Week and encourage them to participate.
This international week of recognition is an opportunity for Shriners to share information about the fraternity, its history and the benefits of becoming part of an organization dedicated to fun, fellowship and philanthropic support.

The band did a great job for the April Ladies’Luncheon concert with some very challenging
music. Our snowbirds are all gone, and we have a skel-
eton band of locals continuing to rehearse throughthe summer with Ill. Sir Jarrett Miller at the helm.Probably we’ll go into a German band format if wehave the proper instrumentation, as we did last sum-mer. There is a tentative German band gig on thehorizon for next season.
The concert band has decided to pursue gigs atlocal mobile home parks and the like to enhance ourtreasury for next season. Efforts must be made tosupplement the declining revenues from the Big Banddances. Hopefully we’ll be successful. We’d appreci-ate any help or suggestions from the nobility.
The Noblemen are dark until next October. Direc-tor Armand Olivera has returned north to a busyschedule in the New York area throughout the sum-mer. We pray that all our seasonal musicians have ahealthy and rewarding summer and return to usready to perform in the fall.
Finally, sadly, the Black Camel has come for awonderful Noble, Ill. Sir Ken Gerrard, PP 2001, whoI had known since the 1980’s and 1990’s while I wasa member of the Manatee Shrine Club. Ken was alsoa percussionist in the band and an all around greatguy. He will be missed by all who were privileged toknow him.

Next meeting is 7:00 p.m. on June 2 after thecandidate cocktail party at 6:00 p.m. The SpringCeremonial follows on June 4 and 5. We have just passed Memorial Day, a fine time forall Americans to contemplate the cost of their free-dom. It is a sacred day to all veterans. The freedomswe enjoy were paid for with the lives of others thatfew of us actual knew. They came from all walks of life
and region of the country, but they all had one thingin common: a love of country and a loyalty to theirfellowman. As America’s older war veterans are fastdisappearing from society’s landscape, there are fewerand fewer standard-bearers left to carry the torch ofhonor and remembrance. Let us carry our flag withhonor and remember the more than 5,400 who haddied thus far in Afghanistan and Iraq and all thosewho paid the ultimate price for our freedom.
Membership is still a key word with both theShrine and Legion of Honor. We are still open for afew good men.
Have a great summer and plan to meet September1 in the upper room (CRA). Our ladies meet at thesame time in the Sahara Room. It is not the cost ofmembership; it was the cost of eligibility that makesthe Legion of Honor so special.

Walk a Little Slower Daddy“Walk a Little Slower, Daddy,” said a little child so small. I’m following in your footsteps and I don’t want to fall.Sometimes your steps are very fast; sometimes they’re hard to see, So walk a little slower Daddy, for you are leading me.Someday when I’m all grown up, you’re what I want to be. Then I will have a little child who’ll want to follow me.And I would want to lead just right, and know that I was true; So, walk a little slower, Daddy, for I must follow you!

The modern version of Father’s Day celebrationoriginated in the United States of America and
thereafter the tradition spread in countries aroundthe world. The world owes thanks to Ms. SonoraLouise Smart Dodd a loving daughter from Spokane,Washington, as it is because of her struggle thatFather’s Day saw the light of the day. The idea ofFather’s Day celebration originated in Sonora’s mindwhen she listened to a Mother’s Day sermon in 1909.Fairly mature at the age of 27, Sonora pondered ifthere is a day to honor mother then why not forfather? Sonora felt strongly for fathers because of theaffection she received from her own father William
Jackson Smart, a Civil War veteran. Sonora’s motherdied in childbirth when Sonora was just 16. Mr.Smart raised the newborn and five other childrenwith love and care.
Inspired by Ms. Anna Jarvis’s struggle to promoteMother’s Day, Ms. Dodd began a rigorous campaign tocelebrate Father’s Day in the U.S. The Spokane Min-isterial Association and the local Young Men’s Chris-tian Association (YMCA) supported Sonora’s cause. As a result, Spokane celebrated its first Father’s Dayon June 19, 1910. Though there was initial, hesita-tion the idea gained gradual popularity all over theU.S. and Father’s Day came to be celebrated in citiesacross the country.
Happy Anniversary in June to Leonard andMarlene McLelland on the 2nd, Charles and MaryJane Hamilton on the 12th and Russell and JaniceSexton on the 27th.

The month of May started with a bang. After a two-year hiatus for the Florida Oriental Band Asso-
ciation, we are again joining all other Shrine units forthat long awaited “Fantasy.” The great Sahib Orien-tal Band surely will not disappoint anyone with theplanned program. Fifteen of our bandsmen traveledto Ocala; this was also the first time that we wore ournew headgear, sash and accessories. Thanks to LadyTrudy and Lady Laurie for a great job.
On May 11, the Sahib Oriental band sponsored theBirthday/Anniversary Dinner Dance. We realize thatmany of our northern friends had already left forhome; but we sincerely thank all that attended andmade it a success.
On April 17, eleven of our bandsmen attended theCeremonial at Araba Shrine in Ft. Myers. It is theinteraction among our Florida Shrine, which keepsthat spirit alive. As always, our Director, Noble Floyd“whipped” everyone in shape for a stellar perfor-mance.
Also in April, two of our ex-bandsmen were calledhome by the Black Camel, Ill. Sir Ken Gerrard, Sr.,PP and Noble Ken Wiegman. We express our sinceresympathy to their families.

This late winter and early spring has been one ofthe busiest I can remember. We have had the
Circus, Spring Baseball, County Fair and abbrevi-ated start and finish ( April 8 and April 9 ) to thesummer baseball games to be played by the PiratesClass A farm team, the Marauders.
The Divan and other nobles continued the work ofthe temple, meetings and Bingo durPing all theseworkdays. Many of us had foregone doctor’s appoint-ments and service calls to our homes. Now comes thecatch-up and various Shrine trips to other temples, clubs and units, Potentate’s cruise, FSA and vaca-tions to renew our commitments.
Our Recorder, John Cooney, had a physical setback during April and we all hope that by the June
Reporter that this trial will be behind John and isback on the road to recovery.
Money Mania is over; however, other projects arelooming large, such as Sahibs commemoration ofVeterans Day and Sahib’s Christmas Party for theShriners Hospital for Children patients, along withour second Ceremonial of this year.
Lady Stacey Lee and I hope everyone has a relax-ing summer with friends, family and returns to Sahibready for new adventures. The Zurlo’s will visit theirson and family in August, after journeying to SouthCarolina with the Model T’s at the SESA. See you allin the fall. Stay safe.

Then therewere some in which they steered you away from, forvarious reasons, mostly unknown to us as children. As we experienced the teenage years and continuedgrowth into adulthood, knowingly or unknowingly,we continued to evaluate our peers using the stan-dards by which we were molded by our parents.

Let’s take a look at something we take for grantedeach & every week. That is—our Thursday Men’s
Luncheon. We start off by saying welcome to the largest
weekly luncheon in all Shrinedom. We mention thisbecause we are proud of it. Many temples have triedand many have failed because they can only getapprox. 10-30 nobles together for lunch. We are fortu-nate to have this big weekly social event. Many of youare here in your seat by 10:30 a.m. to enjoy thecamaraderie and excitement. Ask Bill Mathis, who ishere early, if he enjoys being here! Rev. Bill Carterfrom our Chaplain Corps, driven here every Thurs-day from his living facility, ask him if he enjoys beinghere! I can know many more nobles who look forwardto being here on Thursday and others who wish theycould attend, but for many reasons are unable toenjoy the camaraderie.
The weekly luncheon program—only here at Sahib:(100+ nobles)
1) We start off by honoring our brother nobles, with a prayer and taps, who have recently beenvisited by the black camel.
2) A member of our Legion of Honor leads us inthe Shriners Pledge of Allegiance.
3) We sing God Bless America - led by PastPotentate Jarrett Miller.
4) We have the invocation given by a member ofour Chaplain Corps.
Think about it nobles, where can you take part in aweekly ceremony like this, with a 100+ nobles—yourfriends—brothers. When you take a moment to thinkabout it, it will give you a great feeling. There aremany who are not as fortunate to be here. I enjoygoing around before lunch and greeting as many ofyou as I can, because I know you also enjoy being apart of this special weekly event.
Another point: We start at noon and at approx.12:10 p.m., the waitresses start coming out of thekitchen with your lunch, that the kitchen has beenpreparing for the past 2½ hours, they will beginserving, the meal of your choice for lunch. Then ashort time later they will be back to pick up yourempty plates and silverware. They will return again, usually with a selection of cake, pie or sherbet fordessert. In the meantime, you have been enjoyingunlimited iced tea and coffee.
At approx. 12:40 to 12:45 p.m. (no matter howmany for lunch) the head waitress will alert theDivan (emcee) on stage that they are exiting the mainhall and we can begin our after lunch program. Theyhave served 100+ nobles and have cleared the tablesin roughly ½ hour.

That’s quite an accomplishment and it happensevery Thursday.
No other temple in the State of Florida and through-out most of the Shrine of North America, have whatwe have right here at Sahib. Many have tried andfailed to duplicate, what we take for granted everyweek.
To continue to enjoy this weekly event, we needevery one’s support; we appreciate your patience andunderstanding. It takes a lot of work to prepare andserve this many different meals in such a short timespan. If we error occasionally and didn’t live up toyour expectations for that particular day, I can onlyassure you it wasn’t intentional, everyone is doingtheir best to satisfy.
Why have we been successful with this weeklyevent? It’s because of our attitude, we are proud to bea Sahib Shriner. We are winners!!!!! Let’s continue toappreciate what we have. Thanks for listening.

Touching on areas that have beentraditionally problematic and informationaimed at helping each of us in our role as aDivan Member. Shrine Law covered indetail items from Articles of Incorporationto General Order #1. Read and becomefamiliar, as most questions can be an-swered with Shrine Law.
Imperial Leadership PowershopThis was an eight-hour concentrated pre-sentation of Dr. John C. Maxwell’s 21 Irre-futable Laws of Leadership. Each law wasreviewed with the intention of improvingyour leadership ability. We were activelyencouraged to approach each day with en-thusiasm and the commitment to become a“Shrine Leader” not just a “Shrine Of-ficer.”

No one knows with certainty how or when theMasonic Fraternity was formed. A widely ac-
cepted theory among Masonic scholars is that it arosefrom the stonemasons’ guilds during the Middle Ages. The language and symbols used in the fraternity’srituals come from this era. The oldest document thatmakes reference to Masons is the Regius Poem, printedaround 1390, which was a copy of an earlier work. In1717, four lodges in London formed the first GrandLodge of England, and records from that point on aremore complete.
Within 30 years, the fraternity had spread through-out Europe and the American Colonies. Freemasonrybecame very popular in Colonial America. GeorgeWashington was a Mason, Benjamin Franklin served
as the head of the fraternity in Pennsylvania, as didPaul Revere and Joseph Warren in Massachusetts.Other well-known Masons involved with the found-ing of America included John Hancock, John Sullivan,Lafayette, Baron Fredrick von Stuben, NathanaelGreene, and John Paul Jones. Another Mason, ChiefJustice John Marshall, shaped the Supreme Courtinto its present form.
Over the centuries, Freemasonry has developedinto a world-wide fraternity emphasizing personalstudy, self-improvement, and social betterment viaindividual involvement and philanthropy. During thelate 1700s, it was one of the organizations mostresponsible for spreading the ideals of the Enlighten-ment: the dignity of man and the liberty of the indi-

Sarasota Scottish Rite Clubby Stephen F. Weatherly, KCCH, Vice President, [email protected]
From the earliest time of Christianity, it was thecustom of all trades to have a patron saint, (e.g.
St. Clement for the hatters, St. Crispin of the shoe-makers.) The original patron saint for speculativeMasonry was St. John the Baptist, whose birthday wecelebrate on June 24. He was an itinerant preacherand a major religious figure that lived until 36 A. D.when he was martyred. He followed the example ofprevious Hebrew prophets, living austerely, chal-lenging sinful rulers, calling for repentance and prom-ising God’s justice. His baptism was a purificationrite for repentant sinners and was performed in liv-ing water (a running river) in accordance with Jewishcustom. The custom of baptism was also found in theearly Masonic constitutions and candidates weresprinkled with water after they were raised. This actof baptism was used by operative masons long beforespeculative Masonry came to be.
As the years passed, and after many arguments, the custom of baptizing after raising was stoppedbecause many, not knowing its origins, believed it tobe a Christian ceremony. If they had known or real-
ized the origin of the ceremony of purification bywater, they would have realized it was in existencelong before John the Baptist. It was common practicein all religions in ancient times to be purified bywater before undertaking any great or importanttask. To ancient man it was a glorified way of prepar-ing to pray to his creator. Man was cleansing himselfof all worldly sin, after which he considered himself anew man entering a new world.
John the Baptist knew this and used this methodof purification in his teachings. After purification, one became a follower of God.
Purification by water is still used as part of the14th degree in Scottish Rite. Come witness how manyother Masonic customs can be found in the ScottishRite.
The Tampa Scottish Rite will meet throughout thesummer on the second Monday at 7:30 p.m. A dinneris served at 6:00 p.m., for which reservations arerecommended.
Hope to see you there.
Things have gotten kind of quiet now that theSpring Reunion is behind us. It was great to see

vidual, the right of all persons to worship as theychoose, the formation of democratic governments, and the importance of public education. Freemasonssupported the first public schools in both Europe andAmerica.
During the 1800s and early 1900s, Freemasonrygrew dramatically. At that time, the government hadprovided no social "safety net.” The Masonic traditionof founding orphanages, homes for widows and homesfor the aged provided the only security many peopleknew.
Today’s Freemasons are widely involved in a rangeof charity and community service activities. In fact, the Masonic Fraternity gives almost $1.5 millioneach day to both Masonic and non-Masonic charitieslocally, nationally and internationally. The causesthey support range from operating children’s hospi-tals, providing treatment for childhood language dis-orders, treating eye diseases, funding medicalresearch, contributing to local community service, and providing care to Freemasons and their familiesat Masonic Homes.

The only complaint we ever hear about living inFlorida is that when the snowbirds head home,
some off our mobile home parks and condo areas seemdeserted. We feel really alone. This is a good time tocall a fellow Shriner. There are homebound Shrinersand other interested Brothers, who would love to hearfrom you. Your Ambassadors’ Committee urges you totake the first step and call our Ambassadors or ourtelephone squad. It could be that someone else hasthe same problem as you and the two of you could helpeach other. A neighbor could be as close as yourtelephone.

First thing, I would like to thank, Ill. Sir Don Vos,the Divan and Sahib Nobility for allowing my atten-
dance at the Imperial Oriental Guide Seminar on March10-14. Although only four days in length; classes startearly and end late into the day. The seminars are mostinformative and networking with Imperial officers andinternational counterparts priceless. Even though eachDivan member attended this school, this seminar com-prised the most current thinking of Imperial; a briefsynopsis of topics will follow. In depth, conversation oftopics can be expanded, as desired. This seminar wasattended by 187 nobles and 125 ladies, the largestschool ever held by Imperial. A great deal of emphasiswas placed on the importance of your lady and herparticipation in Shrine events. Ladies had daily semi-nars outlining their responsibilities while a Divan Ladyand beyond. If the Shrine is going to grow, it must caterto younger candidates, placing emphasis on ladies andfamily. Imperial plans on going after the dot.com agegroup with programs introduced to all nobles.
Opening remarks were given by Imperial Sir JackJones, who attended many of the seminars, placingemphasis on the instructor’s material content. ImperialDeputy George Mitchell, along with Imperial Sirs AlanMadsen and Jeff Sowder mingled daily with OrientalGuides in seminars, breaks and evening networking. One evening was devoted to Florida Oriental Guides, who were given the space to further network.
Colorado and Iowa FundraisingTransparency and further transparency. All trans-actions should be open and available for review, fromthe Potentate to the newest noble. When events arescheduled to take place at the temple, the Potentateshould approve or not; the Divan should have a copy ofthe approved event request, anticipated profit and lossstatement (P&L) prior to the event and a final P&Lafter the event. By keeping the Divan informed of theevents in writing, they are aware of key nobles for theevent and additional pertinent information. Histori-cally, you have a trail of such an event to assist in futureplanning to repeat, build on or cancel such an event.
Temple Governance was a major topic early intothe seminar. What are your responsibilities as Poten-tate, Chief Rabban, Assistant Rabban, High Priest &Prophet and Oriental Guide? This was further extendedto include board of governors or trustees, current orpotential appointed Divan members, club and unitheads. All leaders must have the same goal of Hope,Growth, Purpose and insure all nobles Have Fun &Fellowship with Philanthropy. At local temples, a re-cruiting notebook for all future leaders should be devel-oped; stating duties and responsibilities of each position,so that nobles are aware of what is expected of themnow, and if they choose to progress, in the future. Byextending this type of recruiting at employee, club/unitofficers and Divan levels will ensure a more harmoni-ous leadership capable of accomplishing their particu-lar job duties.
In addition, strong language was paid, to GeneralOrder #1, early and often in the seminar. Additionaltopics included, Legal Department Notification, TempleGovernance, Shrine Circuses, Tours and Cruises,Fundraising Activities, Special Purpose Funds, ShrineHospital Patient Transportation Fund, CharitableFundraising-Approval-Reporting, Hospital Van Reso-lution.
Budget and FinanceThe importance of this topic is obvious and non-ending for every noble. Major topics covered included; Objectives, The Financial Team, Shrine Law, Regula-tions and other Resources, Budgeting, FinancialPlanning, Internal Control System, Investing TempleResources, Financial Reporting and Secured or LongTerm Obligations. Manuals for these topics can befound at www.shrinershq.org and click on BATSManual (Budget, Accounting, Taxes, Systems). Thenewest site, www.shrinersvillage.com was beingrolled out as the seminar took place. Check fre-quently, as it is being expanded and more toolsadded. All temple Divan members have been regis-tered by Imperial and can enter the site.
Emphasis was placed on understanding each budgetline item and every contract that is in effect while youare on the Divan.
Membership-Now is the TimeMembership must be the number one priority of allShrine officers and leaders. Officers need an under-standing of Member Recruitment, Retention and Resto-ration as well as current tools available. An excitingnew membership tool is beashrinernow.com. This sitecan be used by future Masons and Shriner’s alike. Aperson with fraternity interest can enter the site, com-plete the data page and will be directed to either how tobe a Mason or Shriner. Upon completion, letters aregenerated by Imperial for the inquiry, notification ofappropriate location temple, membership chairs andvirtual mentors who will stay in contact to bring thisperson into the fraternity. All Divan and membershipleaders should register as a virtual mentor (a contact)in order to build membership! Emphasis on this newsite should be prominent through out the temple, ontemple generated publications and temple web sites.
So You’re Going to Be a PotentateThis book should be used when recruiting potentialDivan candidates in conjunction with the previouslydescribed notebook, duties and responsibilities of eachofficer. Be up front and eliminate surprises! There isprotocol to be followed, so that each potential Divanofficer knows what is expected of him now and in thefuture. Avoid embarrassment! To the noble, the temple, and the Chief Rabban who appoints a new line noble, who is unaware of his expectations now and in thefuture. This book is eye opening and inclusive; with the

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) on PULL TABS
1. Why not collect the whole can? Collecting complete canswould require a great deal more storage space. You shouldgo ahead and recycle the rest of the can in the normal way,in the dumpster behind Sahib.
2. How many tabs in a pound? 1,267.3. How many tabs will a gallon milk jug hold? About 5 pounds
worth.4. How does it work and where does the money go? The tabs
are delivered to the Sahib office (or almost any Sahib club/unit location) and then taken to the recycling center. Themoney netted from recycling goes directly into the “WheelChair Repair Fund” at the Tampa Shriners Hospital forChildren.
Help us collect TABS! It’s easy and it’s fun! Put out a milk jug at every picnic or party!
Hospital Transportation FundCollection Boxes

What are the boxes for?To help collect donations, money for ourHospital Transportation Fund to helprelieve the pressure from the HospitalDays Fund Drive.
