Prestonpans Infant School Newsletter

June 2012

We did it. It’s taken most of 2

years. It’s taken a lot of work from

many people. You’ve all given very

generously. We’ve had a lot of fun

in the process.

But finally, with the last push from

our Marathoners, we have achieved our target of £30 000

and more. The Grand Total is……

The Playground is so much improved and the children have a

great range of places to play and activities to keep them ac-

tive and interested at playtimes. THANK YOU EVERYONE!

On behalf of you all, I want to thank the Parent Council and

it’s fundraising and grounds groups who have worked so hard

to make this all possible. It’s not been easy for them.

They’ve taken a lot of stick at

times but they have kept going

and kept going, determined to

give the children the best they

possibly can give and they have

succeeded. You can see this

from this photo of children

fascinated with the newest

playground installation.

Sports Day was different this year. In line with the Curriculum for Excel-

lence Health and Wellbeing guidance on ‘Co-operation and Competition’, which

says there should be ‘Physical experiences and contexts for learning which

include ...directly/indirectly competitive activities and individual/team

activities’, we introduced a more competitive Sports Day. This had been

agreed with the Parent Council and with staff.

Some children found this quite difficult. Perhaps they weren’t winning at all,

perhaps they are used to winning in the class and it wasn’t happening at

Sports Day. Our aim in introducing more competition in Sports was to cele-

brate those children who achieve highly in sports. It is also to build

‘resilient children who can resist adversity, cope with uncertainty and re-

cover more successfully from traumatic episodes’ (Curriculum for Excellence).

That was certainly the views of the Parent Council who met after Sports

Day. What did you think? Please let us know by replying on the at-

tached slip and sending it back into school. We really need to know every-

one’s views on COMPETITION and on the general format of the day eg

next year, we won’t have the ice cream van. (Sorry, it was too dear and too

complicated!)

It’s really important to come to school on the last

day. Assembly that day will be a bit special so make sure

you are there. We decided a long time ago that the last

day of term would be a DRESS DOWN DAY and it’s free

and just for fun.

It was so very sad that t h e

Gala was yet again a day of solid

rain. On your behalf, I want to

thank the Prestonpans Gala Com-

mittee for their hard work

through the year that led to the

children taking part having a great

time and looking fabulous, despite

the rain. We do appreciate you Gala Committee. Surely next

year, the sun will shine…...

This year, all our nursery children who are going to school,

will have a wee assembly to celebrate their time in nursery

and to say goodbye to the nursery staff. This will be held in

the school gym hall on Wednesday 27 June at 11am. Families

are welcome, so are cameras! Come and be proud of the way

your child has grown and developed in our super nursery.

improved Playground. Time will be around

12 -2pm and we will invite all the people

and groups that contributed to our Playground Improvement Fund.

… for helping me settle i n t o

Prestonpans Infant School so happily.

Everyone told me, ‘it’s a lovely wee

school’ and that’s exactly how I have

found it. But Prestonpans Infants is

so much more than that too. We

are a vibrant, feisty, caring community of people that

want to do the best for the wee ones in our school. I

love the way you parents and carers, support the school in

so many ways. On behalf of the staff, thank you for all

the support you give us and give the children. Have a

safe and happy holiday and we look forward to seeing you

safely back on 15 August. P3 children and families, we

wish you well. You are ready for the great adventure

ahead at Prestonpans Primary School. We look forward to

seeing you grow over the next few years and to welcom-

ing you back as P7 helpers in 4 years’ time!

… on Sports—what did you think?

… P3 parents and carers, do you have any advice for us about

1. How we got your child ready for moving up to P4 in the

Primary School?

2. The Information Evening at the Primary School on 7 June

2012?
