“We are a Catholic faith community devoted to becoming a dynamic center of worship. We
challenge ourselves to lead lives patterned after Jesus. With gratitude we share our faith, tal-
ents, gifts and resources so that more people experience God’s love.”
June 22, 2014 2 Welcome to St. Gerald Parish
Today is the Solemnity of the Body and Blood of Christ: This feast combined two feasts that were
celebrated several decades ago. One was for the Body of Christ and one was for the Blood of Christ.
In our parish we use a Eucharistic Procession to witness to our Faith in the real presence of Jesus
Christ in the Holy Eucharist. Another way is for us to pray in front of the Blessed Sacrament whether in the Tabernacle or
Exposed in the Monstrance. Another way is for you to genuflect when you come into church. Many people so casually do
this reverent act or don’t do it at all, that it leads one to conclude—we can all do a better job. When I am setting up for mass
I have to pass by the tabernacle several times. I try to genuflect when I first do and then when I am finished. And I often
call to mind who dwells in our tabernacle and make a personal act of faith. To believe in the real presence of Jesus is a very
Pro-life statement for to believe in His presence in the host is to realize the dignity of each person who was created in the
Image of the God we worship.
Announcement: This was sent last week to our parents, faculty and staff: It is with the greatest regret that I have accepted
the resignation of Michala Jacobson as our School Principal. A position at Daniel J. Gross High School opened up and was
offered to her. She will become the Admissions Director and Head Softball Coach. I am saddened to lose her and I know
this will send ripples through the strong foundation of faith we have in our school. She did such a great job here for us in
her one year as Principal. I do not want to lose one iota of energy that is in our school to be and become one of the best ele-
mentary schools in the Archdiocese. I plan on filling the position as soon as possible and I will keep you informed all along
the way. Michala is still in the position as our Principal and will work to fill the various faculty positions that are presently
open and make the various assignments and decisions that need to be made at this point in preparations for a new school
year. She has promised to work with the new principal in the transition. I believe our school is more than any one person,
more than me, or a teacher or a principal. We have to remember this—we have a great culture that Michala has helped form
since her presence in our school began back in 1995. The Body of Christ that makes up this school will look at itself and
make the adjustments needed so it can continue the journey to excellence on all levels. I pray that Michala will make Gross
HS stronger with her gifts that will be shared there and that will benefit many of our present and future school families who
will send their children there. Forward! In Christ, Fr. Korte
Daily Mass Changes for the Week of July 7-11: The 12:15 mass will be moved to Lakeview Chapel for this week. Totus
Tuus has a daily mass and instead of multiplying masses I have decided to move this mass to Lakeview. I am hoping this
will not be a problem for our daily mass folks; I pray you will be flexible. On the positive side, you will be joining with the
children from the Totus Tuus program and praying with them and for the children and families of our parish. Start putting
this on your calendar so you will remember.
!o Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament the First Friday of July: Because it’s July 4. We will resume Exposition of the
Blessed Sacrament during the morning hours on Aug. 1 and the 8:15 am mass will be transferred to 96th and Q. June was
taken up with preparations for our Corpus Christi Procession. And we honored the Blessed Sacrament formally in this way
during June. During the School Days we have Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament during the school day on First Friday’s.
There are very few adults who take advantage of this; there certainly could be more. All you have to do is come through the
school office in order to gain access to the Church.
Religious Persecution Assaults Sanctity of All Human Life--Putting Value Judgments on People
By Denise Hunnell, MD WASHINGTON, D.C., June 12, 2014 Zenit.org - As I write this, Meriam Yahya Ibrahim sits in a Sudanese jail sentenced to death for
refusing to renounce her Christian faith. Her father was Muslim, and although he was never a part of her life, the Sudanese government
declares that having a Muslim father makes Meriam a Muslim too. Under sharia law, her embrace of Christianity makes her guilty of
apostasy, an offense punishable by death.
In Iran, Pastor Saeed Abedini has been jailed for nearly two years because of his Christian faith. Prison guards beat him to the
point that he loses consciousness. He has required hospitalizations due to both illness and injuries suffered while imprisoned. This past
month he was forcibly removed from the hospital by prison guards, again beaten to the point of unconsciousness, and returned to prison.
The only justification offered by the Iranian authorities for Pastor Saeed’s imprisonment is that he is a Christian and supports the Chris-
tian community in Iran.
In northern Nigeria, the radical Islamists of Boko Haram routinely terrorize and murder Christians as well as others, including Muslims.
In 2012 a spokesman for Boko Haram warned the group would target Christians, declaring, “We will create so much effort to end the
Christian presence in our push to have a proper Islamic state that the Christians won't be able to stay." Since that time they have killed
hundreds of people and burned over fifty churches. In April of this year they kidnapped 300 young girls, most of whom are Christian,
from a school in Chibok. The girls have not been found and the terrorists are threatening to sell the girls into slave-like Islamic marriag-
es.

Aug 10 St Columbkille 1:30- 4:30pm Aug 12: St Leo 7-10pm Aug 18: St Vincent de Paul 7- 10pm Mandation:
Sept 4: St Cecilia Cathedral 7pm. Names must be submitted by July 30, 2014 to the business office.
These are but a few of the countless examples around world of atrocities due to
religious intolerance. Religiously motivated persecution fuels a deplorable disregard for
the sanctity of human life. Those who profess a minority viewpoint are deemed of lesser
value and their lives are considered expendable.
Unfortunately, much of the most violent religious persecution goes seemingly unnoticed
by the West. The case of Meriam Ibrahim, however, has rightly drawn universal condem-
nation from multiple government officials as well as the United Nations. The UN Office
of the High Commissioner for Human Rights issued a statement declaring, “We urge the
Sudanese Government to meet its obligations under international law to protect the right
to freedom of religion, which is enshrined in Article 18 of the International Covenant on
Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR), which Sudan has ratified.” There is a tinge of irony
to the United Nations’ forceful statement in support of religious liberty. It comes on the
heels of the United Nations Committee Against Torture meeting in Geneva where the
United States representative, Felice Gaer, suggested that the Vatican was guilty of psy-
chological torture against women because the Catholic Church opposes abortion. In the
realm of United Nations logic, diplomats like Ms. Gaer see the execution of Meriam Ib-
rahim as a human rights violation while the execution of an unborn child based on the
whims of her mother as justice for women. It is not just the United Nations that fails to
grasp that true respect for human rights must protect all human life along the entire con-
tinuum from conception to natural death. Many of the same celebrities and political fig-
ures who joined the #BringBackOurGirls campaign on Twitter to raise awareness of the
kidnapped Nigerian girls would have whole-heartedly supported the killing of these same
girls in utero. In their worldview, desiring an education does not diminish the value of
the girls’ lives but being an inconvenience to their mothers makes them disposable.
It takes a great deal of arrogance to believe that anyone is capable of making a
value judgment of another person’s life. Yet it is exactly this sort of arrogance that is the
underpinning of religious persecution, abortion, euthanasia and a host of other assaults
on the dignity of human life: You do not believe as I do therefore you are unfit to live.
Your birth will compromise my lifestyle choices so I will abort you. Your need for care
is too expensive, too emotionally burdensome, or too time consuming so I will euthanize
you. In my judgment, you serve no useful purpose so your life has no value.
As abortion, assisted suicide, euthanasia and the rationing of medical care be-
come more mainstream around the world there is desensitization to the utilitarian philo-
sophical roots that drive these policies. I have no doubts that the supporters of abortion
and euthanasia would recoil in horror to be compared with Boko Haram or the radical
Islamic regimes of Iran or Sudan. Yet their value judgments on the lives of the unborn or
the lives of those who are infirm and disabled are really not that different from the value
judgments based on extremist religious ideology. Both deny the intrinsic dignity of hu-
man life and ascribe the worth of a human person based on some arbitrary external as-
sessment.
While it is essential to express outrage over religious persecution, our objections
must not stop with confronting the disregard for religious liberty. We must also protest
the underlying assumption that there can be any basis for devaluing human life.
It is time to remind those who think the violence of Boko Haram is intrinsically
different than the violence of abortion that any attempt to establish a gradation of values
for human life, whether it is based on ideology, socioeconomic status, age, health or
physiological development, undermines all human dignity. To allow that some people
are more valuable than others subjects the weak and vulnerable to the tyrannical control
of the strong and powerful.
Missionary Coop: This year we welcome Fr. Willem Christiaans, OSFS to our parish to preach about the missions. He is a member of the Oblates of St. Francis de Sales. Fr. Christiaans will be preaching the weekend of June 28-29 and will share with you the work they do in South Africa, Na-mibia, Benin, Brazil, Uruguay, Mexico, India, Ecuador, Colombia, Haiti, Ukraine, Philippines, and the US Virgin Islands. Father is the National Director of Propagation of the Faith for all of South Africa.
