Last week, the Gospel concluded with the words of Jesus inviting His listeners to come after Him. The last words we heard our Lord say last Sunday were to “deny yourself, take up your cross, and to follow me.” The Gospel story this Sunday begins where we left off last week. After hear Jesus invite others to come follow Him last Sunday, this Sunday, we hear how Jesus and His offer of God’s saving grace is unwanted and not received by a number of people in the Gospel. The invitation of Jesus to follow Him is rejected in today’s Gospel passage. In the first half of today’s reading from the Gospel of Luke, we hear how a whole village in Samaria would not welcome Him. A whole village of people refuse to receive our Lord Jesus! If that’s not sad enough, in the second half of today’s reading from the Gospel of Luke, we hear how Jesus’ call to follow Him is rejected by three more people.

From this week’s Gospel reading, we get the picture that nobody likes Jesus. Nobody. Jesus is all alone. It is not hard to imagine Jesus looking around Him, seeing nobody, but the wild animals, and saying “"foxes have dens and birds of the sky have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to rest his head." The Italian artist Alessandro Brovicino captures the rejection and loneliness of our Lord in his beautiful painting entitled Christ in the Wilderness (1515-20). In this scene, we see a sad Jesus sitting alone and looking at the wild animals around Him. A fox sits a little above Jesus’ right foot and toes and birds of the air are perched around the somber Lord.

Brovicino places the fox near the center of his painting, and, likewise, Jesus refers to the fox in the middle, center of today’s gospel passage. Why did Jesus mention the fox of all the animals? Why didn’t He refer to any other wild animal, such as a lion, bear, or stag? The Church Fathers can help us to understand the meaning of Christ’s words. St. Ambrose, the great Doctor of the Church, writing on this Gospel passage teaches, “He compares foxes to heretics (someone who believes something that goes against accepted or official doctrine or articles of faith) because they are indeed a wily animal, and, ever intent on fraud, commit their robberies by stealth. They let nothing be safe, nothing secure. The fox again, an animal full of craft, makes no hole for itself, yet likes to lie always concealed in a hole. So the heretics, who know not how to construct a house for themselves, circumscribe and deceive others. This animal is never tamed, nor is it of use to man. Hence the Apostle, A heretic after the first and second admonition reject.” The Scriptures this Sunday encourage us to listen to God’s voice in our life, to follow Christ’s call, and to believe in His teachings.

Please pray for peace in our city, our nation, and around the world. I share a quote that I recently reread that you may have seen as well: No God, no peace. Know God, know peace. May our Blessed Mother Mary help us with her maternal care and St. Joseph pray for us. Vivat Jesus! Live Jesus!

Informes Padre Bob

Znasz Boga, znasz pokoju. Niech Matka Najświętsza pomaga nam z jej macierzyńską opieką i Św. Jozef modli się za nami. Vivat Jesus! Zyj Jezus!
