Our Lord Jesus Christ King of the Universe

Today, the Church celebrates the Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe. This Sunday is also known as Christ the King Sunday. It is also the last Sunday of the liturgical year. Next week, we begin a new liturgical year with the beginning of Advent. Since this is the last Sunday of the liturgical year, this Sunday’s Gospel reading focuses on the end of the world. As we conclude the liturgical year and Lectionary cycle of St. Matthew’s Gospel, we hear from the Gospel of Matthew the Parable of the Sheep and the Goats about the Last Judgment at Mass today. Jesus said to his disciples: "When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, he will sit upon his glorious throne, and all the nations will be assembled before him. And he will separate them one from another, as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. He will place the sheep on his right

and the goats on his left. Then the king will say to those on his right, 'Come, you who are blessed by my Father. Then he will say to those on his left, 'Depart from me, you accursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels.’” The image that we see is a very beautiful painting entitled the Last Judgment (1520-25) by the Dutch painter Joos van Cleve. In the upper center of the painting, we see Christ the King, wearing resplendent royal red robes, seated on his throne of glory, surrounded by angels. To the Lord’s left and right, in the clouds above, we see the Apostles and saints in heaven. Below the clouds of heaven, we see two angels blowing their trumpets: it is the Day of Judgment. The dead are raised, and, as we hear in today’s Gospel, the nations are assembled before Christ the King, and are separated by angels into two groups. One group is the blessed and righteous, and the other group is the accursed and wicked. The blessed and righteous inherit eternal life and the joys of the Kingdom of Heaven, and the accursed and wicked are cast into fire and eternal punishment. What is very apparent in Joos van Cleve’s painting is the clear separation of people into two distinct groups. The group of the righteous and blessed on Christ’s right (our left) are bathed in bright light, while the group of the accursed and wicked on Christ’s left (our right) are surrounded by darkness, shadow, and flame. In the Gospel we hear how the sheep are on the right hand of Christ, and the goats on the left hand. The right hand is generally considered the place of honor, and the left of lesser honor. In addition, the right side was considered the good side, while the left was considered the bad, evil side. The sheep are called "blessed" and the goats are called "cursed."

The blessing and the curse is due to their own works. Jesus says, “For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, a stranger and you welcomed me, naked and you clothed me, ill and you cared for me, in prison and you visited me.'” In his Catechetical Instructions, St Cyril of Alexandria teaches, “How does the shepherd make the separation? Does he examine out of a book which is a sheep and which a goat? Or does he distinguish by their evident marks? Does not the wool show the sheep, and the hairy and rough skin the goat? In like manner, if you have been just now cleansed from your sins, your deeds shall be henceforth as pure wool; and your robe shall remain unstained. By your vesture shall you be known for a sheep. But if are found to be hairy, like Esau, who was rough with hair, and wicked in mind, who for food lost his birthright and sold his privilege, you shall be one of those on the left hand.” So, the sheep/righteous do these good deeds, whereas the goats/accursed do not do these good deeds. Notice how simple these works are. It is nothing outstanding or too difficult to do. No great talent is needed to do them. No great ability is needed to give food and drink to someone in need. These are things that we can all easily do. Jesus is not setting up some high standard here that we have to meet to be sheep. We don't need to accomplish some great ascetical feats. We do not have to fast until we drop or pray day and night on our knees. Jesus calls us to live the corporal works of mercy in generosity and love for others. Please continue to pray for all the Souls in Purgatory. May the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of Good Help, help us with her maternal care and St. Joseph pray for us. Vivat Jesus! Live Jesus!

Hoy, la Iglesia celebra la solemnidad de Nuestro Señor Jesucristo, Rey del Universo. Este domingo también se conoce como el Domingo de Cristo Rey. También es el último domingo del año litúrgico. La próxima semana, comenzamos un nuevo año litúrgico con el comienzo de Adviento. Dado que este es el último domingo del año litúrgico, la lectura del Evangelio de este domingo se centra en el fin del mundo. Al concluir el año litúrgico y el ciclo Leccionario del Evangelio de San Mateo, escuchamos en el Evangelio de Mateo la Parábola de las Ovejas y los Cabritos acerca del Juicio Final en la Misa de hoy. Jesús dijo a sus discípulos: "Cuando el Hijo del Hombre venga en su gloria, y todos los ángeles con él, se sentará en su trono glorioso, y todas las naciones se congregarán delante de él.

Y él los separará unos de otros. como un pastor separa las ovejas y a los cabritos, coloca las ovejas a su derecha y los cabritos a su izquierda. La imagen que vemos es una pintura muy hermosa titulada El Juicio Final (1520-25) del pintor holandés Joos van Cleve. En el centro superior de la pintura, vemos a Cristo Rey, vestido con ropas rojas reales resplandecientes, sentado en su trono de gloria, rodeado de ángeles. A la izquierda y la derecha del Señor, en las nubes de arriba, vemos a los Apóstoles y santos en el cielo. Debajo de las nubes del cielo, vemos dos ángeles tocando sus trompetas: es el Día del Juicio. Un grupo es el bendito y el justo, y el otro grupo es el de detestable y malvado. Lo que es muy evidente en la pintura de Joos van Cleve es la clara separación de las personas en dos grupos distintos. No es nada excepcional o demasiado difícil de hacer. No se necesita gran talento para hacerlas. No se necesita gran habilidad para dar comida y bebida a alguien que lo necesita. Estas son cosas que todos podemos hacer fácilmente. Jesús no está estableciendo un alto estándar aquí que tenemos que cumplir para ser ovejas. No necesitamos realizar grandes hazañas ascéticas. No tenemos que ayunar hasta que caemos o rezamos día y noche de rodillas. Jesús nos llama a vivir las obras corporales de misericordia en generosidad y amor por los demás. Przypada dzisiaj w Kościele Uroczystość Chrystusa Króla Wszechświata. Jest to ostatnia niedziela obecnego roku liturgicznego. Już za tydzień zacznie się Adwent, a wraz z nim: nowy rok liturgiczny. Tematem dzisiejszego fragmentu z Ewangelii Mateusza jest koniec świata. Chodzi o Przypowieść o owcach i kozłach na Sądzie Ostatecznym. Jezus powiedział do uczniów: „Gdy Syn Człowieczy przyjdzie w swej chwale i wszyscy aniołowie z Nim, wtedy zasiądzie na swoim tronie pełnym chwały. I zgromadzą się przed Nim wszystkie narody, a On oddzieli jednych [ludzi] od drugich, jak pasterz oddziela owce od kozłów. Owce postawi po prawej, a kozły po swojej lewej stronie.

Wtedy odezwie się Król do tych po prawej stronie: Pójdźcie, błogosławieni Ojca mojego, weźcie w posiadanie królestwo, przygotowane wam od założenia świata! (...). Wtedy odezwie się i do tych po lewej stronie: Idźcie precz ode Mnie, przeklęci, w ogień wieczny, przygotowany diabłu i jego aniołom!” Widzicie tu obraz pędzla holenderskiego artysty, Joosa van Cleve'a, pod tytułem: „Sąd Ostateczny” (lata 1520-1525). Pośrodku obrazu, widzimy Chrystusa Króla w przebogatej czerwonej szacie, siedzącego na Swym tronie chwały w otoczeniu zastępów anielskich. W chmurach po obydwu stronach Pana widzimy znajdujące się w Niebie postaci Apostołów i świętych. Poniżej, dwóch aniołów dmie w trąby: nastał Dzień Sądu. Umarli powstali z grobów, a przed Chrystusem zgromadziły się wszystkie narody, które następnie podzielono na dwie grupy. Jedna składa się z dusz błogosławionych i prawych, druga zaś z przeklętych i okrutnych. Pierwsi otrzymują życie wieczne i radość Królestwa Bożego, drudzy są skazani na ogień piekielny i wieczne potępienie. Na obrazie Joosa van Cleve'a wyraźnie widać podział ludzkości na dwie różne grupy. Stojąca po prawej stronie Jezusa grupa błogosławionych skąpana jest w jasnym świetle, podczas gdy grupa potępionych otoczona jest płomieniami i cieniem. Z Ewangelii wiemy, iż owce znalazły się po prawej stronie, a kozły po lewej. Prawa strona generalnie uważana była za miejsce największego honoru, lewa za miejsce mniej zaszczytne. Prawa strona była „dobra”, lewa zaś „zła”. Owce są „błogosławione”, kozły „przeklęte”. To, czy ktoś będzie „błogosławiony”, czy „przeklęty”, zależy wyłącznie od jego własnego postępowania. Jezus powiedział: „Byłem głodny, a daliście Mi jeść; byłem spragniony, a daliście Mi pić; byłem przybyszem, a przyjęliście Mnie; byłem nagi, a przyodzialiście Mnie; byłem chory, a odwiedziliście Mnie; byłem w więzieniu, a przyszliście do Mnie”. W jednym ze swoich dzieł, święty Cyryl Aleksandryjski pisze: „W jaki sposób pasterz dokonuje podziału? Czy posługuje się księgą, w której napisano, jak wygląda owca, a jak koza? Czy może wypatruje on jakichś znamion na ciałach tych zwierząt? Przecież owcę łatwo rozpoznać po wełnie, tak jak kozę po szorstkiej sierści. Podobnie, gdy zostaniesz oczyszczony z grzechu – Twoje uczynki będą odtąd niczym czysta wełna, a szata Twoja pozostanie nieskalana. Dzięki niej Pan pozna, żeś owca. Jeśli jednak będziesz niczym Ezaw wielki i owłosiony, który za miskę soczewicy sprzedał przywilej pierworodnego, wówczas zostaniesz postawiony po lewej stronie”. Tak więc ludzie prawi odznaczają się dobrymi uczynkami, a przeklęci nie. Zwróćcie uwagę na prostotę charakteryzującą te uczynki. Nie ma w nich nic nadzwyczajnego ani zbyt trudnego do wykonania. Nie potrzeba jakichś szczególnych umiejętności do tego, aby nakarmić i napoić potrzebującego. Cel, jaki Jezus przed nami stawia, jest jak najbardziej w naszym zasięgu. Nie musimy wcale pościć, aż zemdlejemy; nie musimy się modlić dzień i noc na kolanach. Pan wzywa nas do codziennych uczynków miłosierdzia względem bliźnich. Pamiętajcie, aby przez cały listopad odmawiać modlitwę różańcową za dusze czyśćcowe. Święta Maryjo, Matko Nieustającej Pomocy, miej nas zawsze w Swojej opiece. Święty Józefie, módl się za nami. Vivat Iesus! Chwała Jezusowi!

We hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving. This week we begin our second trimester after having Parent-Teacher Conferences last week. One of the fun parts of my position is when I have time to walk through our building observing the different learning activities and listening to our children. Leading up to Thanksgiving I was able to learn some things from our children. In our pre-3 classroom they read the story of The Seed and had an opportunity to dig seeds out of a pumpkin and make pumpkin seeds. In a survey most of our preschoolers enjoyed the pumpkin seeds. Mrs. Forst said this year the group ate them all, that she had none to bring home. Our pre-4 read the story of La Tortuga, this is a story of a turtle playing beautiful music for children to dance to – and our four-year-olds can dance. Our pre-4 and Kindergarten also illustrated and wrote about the things they are thankful for – I invite you to visit our school and read their ideas. Our first graders are learning about the parts of a letter and because of this they were able to team up with the National Honor Society at St. Laurence High School to write letters to our soldiers.

Our third grade Book Club read the book by Judy Blune, Freckle Juice, and had the opportunity to try some. While they were skeptical at first, they told me it was good and tasted like strawberry fruit juice.

Finally, I apologize for not posting this prior to Thanksgiving but our second graders have some very interesting recipes for turkeys. The Bon-Bon Turkey has everything included in it from vegetables to pumpkin pie with ice cream. Still I’m not sure the ice cream stays cold in an oven

at 300 degrees for 3 hours. Or how about making your turkey stuffing with some McDonald’s Big Macs and French fires, if you need help I’m sure our second graders would share their culinary secrets. Have a great week! God Bless. Lawrence Manetti, Principal
